    I'm writing this on July 18th, 2017, one year after posting this video and the exact 30th anniversary of the opening day of Yume Kojo! In one year this video has had over 13,000 views, over 500 likes, has brought in 1600 subscribers and has been featured on Nintendo Life, Den of Geek, Polygon and Kotaku as well as other sites that don't publish in English! Its great to see so many people have learned the true story behind Yume Kojo and now have an all new anecdote for whenever someone pulls out Super Mario Bros. 2!

      I absolutely love that you were able to cobble together so much research on the Expo on top of it's ties to the game. In my opinion, you left no stone unturned. So i'm wondering, could you do the same for All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.?

    Wow this is amazing! Mario 2 has been my favorite game since I got it when it came out. For YEARS people loved to throw "you know it's not a real mario game" snark at me. and I have to sigh and say "YEAH DOKI DOKI PANIC I GET IT," but no one ever seems to know more than the cursory story from your intro. This is so much more than that. It's beautiful. And it makes me happy it became a Mario game so that the spirit of such a positive event getting a whole country excited about creativity, the arts and technology, could endure beyond it's original span. Thank you!

      Tom, thanks so much! It’s guys like you that I made this video for. But I always had the curiosity of what the event was. Especially when everyone talk about that but no one knew anything! I’m going to be Malta follow up video next year about how Fuji TV and Nintendo became partners before this game and it’s all interesting history. It’s also not the only switcharoo game video I’ve done. So take the knowledge of Yume Kojo and really really impress everyone with what you know. Thanks so much for watching!

      Honestly if the game didn’t get reskinned into Mario 2 the game would have been forgotten. Seems like Nintendo had a love for this game and didn’t want to see it die.

  • @kino_punkt44
    @kino_punkt44 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Ah!!!! So satisfying! Also, with your info about the Italian inspiration for the mask designs in the festival I am certain I can add one more piece to the Doki Doki Panic puzzle: The likely inspiration for the beak-like mask, that some have likened to a plague doctor mask, on the bouncing birdlike enemy "tweeter." That mask is a dead ringer for the mask for "Zanni," a character type from the tradition of early Italian theater called "Commedia dell'arte"!
    Thanks for making this thorough and well produced video!

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Disrupt the Imaginary hey thanks! I had a friend raised in Italy tell me the same thing. Of course after the video when I can’t change it!. The masks sold at Yume Kojo were imported directly from Italy and had Italian and German text on them. They were wrapped in a paper that said Yume Kojo. And without that paper, you wouldn’t know they were sold there. So I assume that they just imported a ton of them and sold them that way. Glad you liked it! Be sure to spread the word as this video only had 16000 views, yet every other “story of super Mario 2” that doesn’t tell us anything has a million or more

    • @kino_punkt44
      @kino_punkt44 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, I almost didn't write my comment because i can understand the reaction: "Dangit, I wish I had included that in the video!" but luckily you already had that frustration! All the same, I'm glad to have my theory confirmed by a genuine Italian raised person! It's very interesting to think a lot of those masks must still be floating around with most people not knowing their original inception, they are pretty cool looking!

      Thanks I’m glad you liked it. This one is getting old now but it all come from every other channel and website out there constantly repeating the same line about Doki Doki Panic being tied to Yume Kojo but no one having any information at all beyond one sentence. So I did the research and found every piece of info! It wasn’t hard. It taught me two things. One the answer is always out there if you try and two all the supposed “experts” and “historians” just read wikis and repeat each other! 😂 Anyway that lead to this years video when people who were at Yume Kojo offered home movies and recordings to help give even more to the story. 🍒

    Well...that's what an economic bubble with seemingly unlimited resources will do for ya'. I'm so happy your research yielded so much info and pictures because it seems Japan is always bent on keeping these fascinating secrets all to themselves in these tiny little time bubbles riddled with, but all connecting to, multiple facets of their popular culture at the time. What a bizarre event with so much money behind it considering Japan's usual nationalistic approach. Not to diminish the positive message of such a fantastic event, but how strange in contrast. No surprise romance language nations are at the heart of it all, but I strangely see a lack of gaijin around...
    Either way, absolutely amazing presentation bringing light to such a nagging oddity tied closer to our gaming hearts than we know, and thank you again Gaijillionaire (two years later!)

      Thanks! I understand you’re frustrations! The whole reason for making this video is because of mainstream game journalists never actually doing the work to search what this was all about and just recycle the same stuff forever. I never thought much of what Yume Kojo was but I kept hearing about promoting a “fall TV lineup” and after being in Japan so long, I knew it wasn’t true because TV shows aren’t run on the schedule here. Videos of this depth, even for bigger TH-camrs, seem to be a slow-burn. Instead of being a viral hit, you could say they're the TH-cam equivalent of what becomes a "cult classic" in movies. Chasing clicks on the current hot topics might get the views, but not the sustained audience.

  • @RabbitEarsCh

    This was extremely thorough, very well constructed, and it finally makes all the pieces come together. I've read a bunch of stuff more recent than when this video came out about how Miyamoto and Tezuka were experimenting with "verticality" for their next major project, and it turns the standard American view on the subject upside-down: The original "All-New Mario Sequel" was this game all along, and it ended up being built around Yume Kojo to fit the all-consuming mass media event.
    Thank you so much for such a carefully researched story. This and the extremely thoughtful look at Club Nintendo have blown me away in surprised. Well done!

    Wellp...Imma bite. This was a truly informative video. Also makes you think that there is a real possibility that someone, somewhere, Working at Atlus, Capcom, Square Enix, or any other game company today, was once a kid who attended this event long ago in 1987 with their family. I think that that's probably the most amazing part about Yume Kojo '87.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! Yea I think about that too! The new head of Nintendo is like what 44? I’m sure he at least played DDP or Mario USA and it’s funny to think the influence it had yet nobody really knew about it. At least in English

    • @suzunakuraki3747

      Aside from DDP, the Current chief of Nintendo could've been inspired by the Gaming Exhibit at Yume Kojo '87. Same with anybody involved with the creation of Nintendo Switch.

    awesome video. I learned so much that I didn't know before - I've known for years that SMB2 was Doki Doki Panic in Japan, but that was it. Just the music alone takes me back to being a kid, stuck in a hospital bed playing Super Mario Bros 2 on a donated NES in the pediatrics wing of my local hospital, helping me feel happy in a time of sickness.

      You're welcome. I just put up about 20 pictures of some of the souvenirs on twitter. I found a whole bunch and are pretty neat. As for the event, I don't think anyone in the English world ever reported on it. There's a few old Japanese homepages that have some info but not much. But Fuji Tv all along had the chronicle in print. If I ever get to America sometime soon I'll make sure the book is given to the right people

    I just watched this video a couple of days ago, and I'm shocked to learn that one of my favorite video games on the NES as a child was repurposed from a late '80s Japanese summer festival tie-in video game. Whoa… This explains a lot for me. For a start, this explains what the heck that blimp was in Doki Doki Panic's title screen. I can't believe I've known of Doki Doki Panic for so long (since 2008-ish, when I was in Year 5) without knowing this much of its backstory…nor can I believe I was misled into thinking that Lina was Imagin's sister, rather than his girlfriend, for this long. Mind = blown. (And this event was back in 1987. Sheesh… Life must've been really simple back then, back when events and conventions like those weren't about paranoia of receiving more StreetPass data than you can handle all at once. But then again, I wasn't even born until December 1998, so…I wouldn't know.)

      +Ben Roberts thanks for commenting! That was a big surprise to me too about Rina/Lina (it's actually not spelled in English) one scene that got cut was a special coin set you could buy with your name on it. One had Rina on the face and said in English "I love Imajin" ! Then the masks, the bands, it's amazing how much Nintendo related stuff people know but this was just hiding.

      @@GTV-Japan oh yes I saw the book in the video - it seems like it was very well published. So many colorful (and unique nowadays) photos! Looks like you discovered the source which hasn't been available before because of the border of Japaneese langauge. The things you do is close to what I do here because many people in Russia won't read English sources so I make an adaptation for them in simple and fun form (as you did in the video). Subscribed on you for the further interesting material!

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MyNostalgias
      @MyNostalgias 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GTV-Japan You did amazing job restoring the lost (and important) piece of puzzle. Even I back in that era was wondering why SMB-2 so doesn't look like the 1st and the 3rd ones and what was the deal with all those masks? Only yesterday I was watching another review for this game where the author was explaining it like: "the developpers wanted it to be something new not repeating the previous version but still keeping many familiar stuff". And I believe that's how they would explain it for ever if you wouldn't find the book. I think it would be interesting for everyone who's interested in Japaneese pop-culture history because the topic you started is way wider than just one videogame. That impressive 40-days exhibition so worthed the entire video by itself!

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me what got me interested in finding out the truth is that so many websites said Yume Kojo was to promote Fuji TVs fall schedule. But this doesn’t make sense because it’s not done that way in Japan and so I know supposed journalists (ahem nes works) were full of it

      I had a friend who was here in the 80s tell me when it was bonus season, the time of year where salary man gets about $10000 extra in a monthly pay, you could pick up almost new stereos, TVs, etc off the street corner. because everyone just bought a new one every year and threw the old ones out! So I guess even poor people had nice stuff. It also kind of explains why for so long there was new hardware not just for games coming out year after year

    This was super interesting. The other aspect of the Doki Doki Panic videos that seems neglected is the step by step design process and how much input Shigaru really had in developing it. Could you research this for a sequel documentary?

      Thanks I’m glad you liked it. I have no more information beyond that list but later I made a “prequel” of sorts that explains how Fuji TV and Nintendo got together in the first place. So look for my video on all night Nippon Super Mario for that. I have an idea for one more Mario 2 video but it’s on the drawing board I may or may not make it because I don’t want to repeat the same info so it all depends on what I find. Thanks for watching 🍒

      @@GTV-Japan Just a suggestion but maybe you can look into the rumor/myth that the prototype that predated Doki Doki Panic, was a Mario game, when it was only described as a "Mario-like platforming game". It seems like there's a lot of disinformation out there from people who are trying to say that Mario 2 USA was the true Mario 2.

    I cant believe I havent found this video sooner! Super Mario Bros. 2 is one of my favorite games and Shy Guys are my favorite characters, so after learning about how SMB2 came to be I was curious what everything kept referring to about some kind of event Doki Doki Panic was based on. This video finally explained things to me years later!
    And I agree with the last part - Ive never looked at Shy Guys, Snifits, Bob-Ombs and Pokeys the same since learning where SMB2 came from. Especially Shy Guys since theyre my favorite characters! It's so impossible to imagine the Mario universe without them, and hard to believe one of my favorite games and characters would never have been if it wasnt for the japanese SMB2 overdoing it with the difficulty and the rest of the world wanting a much funner, better experience for a Mario sequel!
