This reminds me of Charlie Chaplin's speech, form The Great Dictator, where he says that ,,...More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. I love that Derek is excited coming back to give her the £10 she won on a scratchcard and he couldn't wait to give her the good news. But then once he finds out that she died, the first thing he does is put the £10 in her purse, without a second thought of keeping the money himself. It shows Derek's pure intent and his good soul. Derek was a show that was absolutely marvelous. Ricky Gervais handled a very difficult subject brilliantly, supported by some brilliant actors. A real work of art.
When this came to Netflix last week in the US, I'd heard that he'd taken some flack for the character in the UK as being insensitive and playing on stereotypes, but I saw nothing negative or mean-spirited in the character or his portrayal. In fact, I'd go so far as to call several of the episodes downright beautiful with moments like the ones in the clip here showing what pure kindness and openness looks like.
His family were carers for elderly & disabled, its just a lot of us Brits can't see him as anything more than a comedian and that's a shame because he is also one of our best actors too
He shows many common tics/mannerisms of people who are differently abled- autistic or otherwise. He needs support from others, but they rely on him and his strengths a great deal. He cares for the vulnerable because he knows what it’s like to be vulnerable.
I don't cry at TV shows or films very often. I didn't cry during schindlers list for example, but Derek! I must have cried, proper blubbering crying, at least 4 times during the 2 series. When Kev talks about how Derek is the best thing to happen to him and talks honestly about himself and his pain... cried. When Derek ran back and hugged his Dad..... cried. When Joan's husband was interviewed and talked about his beautiful and happy life.... cried and then when the dog was put down and Derek cried I seriously broke down when watching that. Derek was a beautiful TV and it wasn't making fun of people with any sort of illness or mental health issues it was an honest insight into kindness, loneliness, loss and love. Ricky Gervais is a genius if you ask me and Afterlife is a another beautiful show. Tell me of anyone who has ever made anything like the office, Derek and afterlife. I think you will struggle
I remember noticing Ricky Gervais's acting skills in The Office when he said "Please don't make me redundant" I remember thinking this guys something special. Seeing this has just confirmed it. What a programme this will be!
It is a beautiful show. If you ever told me as well that Ricky Gervais would make me cry and not from laughter I would not believe you!! He is indeed a genius!!
On another note. It truly is better to be kind. Cleverness is inherited from books, art, shared knowledge and literature, it's a thing of the mind. Looks are inherited from our parents or paid for. However kindness is a kindred thing imbued into our soul. The former can die but the latter lives on forever.
The man is an absolute genius - both as a writer and an actor. To put tears alongside laughs in such a short length of time and act it with that kind of heartbreaking conviction is incredible. There are very few people that I can watch Derek with because in scenes like this, I’m just a howling mess.
Wow. This is such a powerful scene. This is a touching and quite respectful show on how life affects people in care. Quite a sad scene to watch though.
About two years ago, I had set up a crosstrainer in my apartment, facing a wall where I placed a small tv. I was trying to pick something to watch as I was starting my at the time new exercise routine, and I just wanted something fun, with maximum 30 minute episodes. I found 'Derek' on Netflix and figured I'd give it a go. When I got to this point, sweating and wheezing on that crosstrainer, I had to stop and climb off of it, because it was impossible to work out while crying my eyes out!
As someone who loves to play Nuvole Bianche on piano myself, the moment it started playing I cried like a baby. I wasn't expecting songs from Ludovico in this show! But it suits it so damn well! I love Ricky so much, he can make me both laugh and cry like anybody else.
Just bought my first piano a week ago, and Nuvole Bianche was one of the main drivers to push that decision. Been a bit obsessed with it ever since I first heard it on Derek. I just learned 'Happy Birthday' 😇 Hoping in a year or two I can play this most beautiful of pieces. So thank you Ricky, and of course, Thank you Ludovico. ❤

I read reviews before I started watching this show and someone said it(the show) has a tendency to make them "laugh and cry at the same time." I didn't take it to be so literal, but it literally had me laughing and tearing up at the same time. Amazing pilot.
Fuck me, this is powerful. Especially for a character like Derek. Gervais is one of the most underrated actors of all time just on this show alone in my opinion.
Ricky is an acting genius. He can make you laugh your head off one day and rip your heart out another. The way he acted the crying scenes in this clip is impeccable. That must be very very hard to pull off. Hats off to him 👏
This was a really beautiful scene. It showed the true goodness and child like nature of Derek when he leaves the money because in his mind that is the right thing to do. It is Joan's money and she should get it, he doesn't know what else he could or should do. It's a wonderfully tragic moment. I never liked The Office or Extras but I loved Derek and I am loving After Life. These last two are where Gervais really demonstrates his humanity and intellect.
Just beyond words. Ricky Gervais is probably the best person in Britain or maybe even the world! A decent, generous talented man. Ps he likes cats, I give him a 10/10 immediately!
Been in his shoes irl. My maternal grandmother died in her sleep, aged 97 (born 1917), whilst my parents were away on holiday 4 years ago. Alzheimers took her slowly over decades, but she had a long happy life. Theres nothing that really prepares you for seeing a close relative in person who has died only minutes before. You dont know where to look, what to say or really what to do at all, not at first. You have to stand tall, go by the book and work out the grief later. As for me, I closed her eyes (left open as her day carers werent allowed to touch the body at all without permission), gave her a hug, a kiss on the forehead and thanked her for how good she had been to me growing up (before Alzheimers took her away). The worst part was calling my mum to tell her, especially when she was on a very rare holiday, rare as she'd been my grandmothers carer for 25 years and I knew my grandmother wouldn't have wanted her holiday spoiled, although I didnt really have a choice but to make the call. Thats just how the older generation were, never wanting any fuss. This is a comedy show, but actually its pretty spot on for showing how it feels to suffer the loss of a senior person. Just yesterday we buried my grandmothers lifelong friend, aged 99, a wonderful person. She was the last one of their friendship group which spanned more than 100 years. It's hard to even comprehend that fact, let alone what they had collectively experienced.
I lost my grandmother this year, she was the greatest person in my life. This scene really represents everything that I've felt since I lost her. I miss all the small things she did for me, made me feel validated. Ricky gervais is a genius. One of my favorite shows.
This character breaks my FREAKING heart because of his sweeeeet innocence. Ricky really put all of his emotions into this role and it is just.... brilliant. And moving.
There isnt a Hollywood A lister alive or dead who made me feel the way this show does jesus christ when that dog he loved died I cried like a child a grown man reduced to a heap ...Ricky Gervais is the best actor we will ever know.
The brilliance of Gervais... Thank you for making me laugh so hard that it hurts. Bless you for making me cry so hard that it hurts. You’re the reason I became a PCA in Aged Care. Thank you Derek Thank you Hannah Thank you Doug Thank you Kev Thank you all the residents The most inspirational show this decade. You guided me to where I need to be.
THE FEELS ALL THE WAY THROUGH.. and then at the funeral; "did you have something to eat" Derek: "Pringles.. I had alot though".. Right back into laughing again goddamnit this show is amazing.
This scene is so beautifully acted by Ricky. This one and the one in the second series when the dog has to be put down just absolutely wreck me. So much of Ricky's comedy - especially his stand-up - has a cynical edge, but there's a distinct lack of cynicism in Derek. It's unashamedly packed full of heart, and I don't know about anyone else, but, I think it's the best thing he's ever come up with. I think he's a genius.
I remember the first time I saw this pilot, wept like a baby at this scene, then Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi kicks in, you weep even more, then Karl's character comes in and you see the restored painting, and the dam bursts.
Yep, the one that earlier in the episode he says it's 'pointless' to mend it or something like that, this scene doesn't do that bit justice obviously but in the episode it's a pretty powerful moment.

This show is getting waaay too much flack. It may not be the funniest ever but it is so god damn heartfelt.
I never thought Gervais could make me shed manly tears. Laughter and tears at the same time. Never felt that before. Kudos to you Ricky.
Amazing writer and catching true emotion
"I'm not clever or good looking, but I am kind" - excuse me while I weep in the corner
I cried at this :( I honestly love this show so much
This breaks my heart and makes me think of my grandmother who passed on.
I lost my grandmother this year, she was the greatest person in my life. This scene really represents everything that I've felt since I lost her. I miss all the small things she did for me, made me feel validated. Ricky gervais is a genius. One of my favorite shows.
1 year
People sometimes forget what an amazing actor Ricky Gervais is . .
Ricky Gervais has made me cry with laughter countless times, but I never thought he'd be able to make me just cry.
I find this character showed a real different side to Ricky's talent
This show moved me a lot...many times!
ricky just plays this character to a tee, hes captured everything just right
This character breaks my FREAKING heart because of his sweeeeet innocence. Ricky really put all of his emotions into this role and it is just.... brilliant. And moving.
I almost never cry from movies/tv shows no matter how sad, but this scene made me shed a few tears.
I would never thought a series with Ricky Gervais in it would be so emotional. Great job :) Can't wait.

The most inspirational show this decade.
You guided me to where I need to be.
THE FEELS ALL THE WAY THROUGH.. and then at the funeral; "did you have something to eat" Derek: "Pringles.. I had alot though".. Right back into laughing again goddamnit this show is amazing.
Kindness is magic.nuff said.
Comedian and comedy actors are my favorite for dramatic/ emotional scenes, they’re so good.
This whole series is SO beautiful, very subtle and poignant. This Scene of course was very touching, and I cried my eyes out at the time.
'kindness is magic". This was a beautiful show.
Powerful stuff....just seen a clip...I am going to watch everything now
The look of sorrow and loss in Ricky's eyes at 1:05 is fucking heart-wrenching. What a damn good actor he is.
Ricky Gervais always creates scenes that make me cry
Such much passion in this, such a brilliant fucking actor managing to show this during a scene.
Literally said goodbye to one of my favorite residents as a CNA today. Cried in the bathtub and here I am.
ricky gervai and this entire cast are magic
"I'm not clever or good looking, but I'm kind" Powerful words...
Ricky is so good at acting
outstanding work yet again from ricky
This scene is so beautifully acted by Ricky. This one and the one in the second series when the dog has to be put down just absolutely wreck me.
So much of Ricky's comedy - especially his stand-up - has a cynical edge, but there's a distinct lack of cynicism in Derek. It's unashamedly packed full of heart, and I don't know about anyone else, but, I think it's the best thing he's ever come up with. I think he's a genius.
Omg I'm in tears right now 😭
I remember the first time I saw this pilot, wept like a baby at this scene, then Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi kicks in, you weep even more, then Karl's character comes in and you see the restored painting, and the dam bursts.
Yep, the one that earlier in the episode he says it's 'pointless' to mend it or something like that, this scene doesn't do that bit justice obviously but in the episode it's a pretty powerful moment.
Derek is perfect. Heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. Should have been more than 2 series
Incredibly well done and well thought out. Life and death are magical, death not so much.😪
