This was Metallica's first music video. The clips you see in the music video are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun". It's about a young man that goes to war in WW1, gets hit by a mortar shell which blows off his arms, legs and part of his face. He loses his sight, his speech and hearing (all in the lyrics)

I know this is a song about a military wounded warrior but it also fits medical trauma. My emergency surgery that gave me My stoma went wrong. Was supposed to take 3 hrs. I spent over 9 hrs on that hard plastic slab they actually operate on. My back sucks I've blown it out more times than I can count, pinched nerves pulled muscles ect. So there I was in literal gut wrenching pain as they had to take out over half my large intestine ,that pain made my back clench more which was already in pain from that long on a plastic slab making my guts tense more. Back and forth one pain building and causing more of the other till I spent 24 hrs screaming until I couldn't scream anymore. It wasn't until I asked a nurse to let me die that they finally took my pain seriously. Thus was born my ptsd and I relive that in my flashbacks and nightmares.

This is why bands like Metallica will always be my favorite, the passion that is visible off you before the first chorus kicks in is what makes music like this so great. • @JosiahMayfield_1
    @JosiahMayfield_1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +95

You should probably pull up lyrics on the side... It would help you understand the message of the song... Try genius... You get the lyrics and a brief breakdown... This is a deep song about the horrors of war. The video incorporates clips from a movie Johnny Got His Gun, which is an anti war movie about a roung man who goes to war and gets injured by a mortar and loses all his limbs as well as his sight, hearing, and sight... He's basically trapped in his own mind cut off from the world. He's going insane and wishes for death... Anyways I hope that helps you add context to the song. In addition Metallica has a whole album where they perform some of there biggest hits with the SanFransico Orchestra... Pretty amazing blend of sounds.. check it out. Enjoyed your reaction.

But as I listened to it more, along with paying attention to the lyrics, watching the music video and my mom talking about how when she first heard this, it was in concert and she was so taken aback by the subject matter that I just fell in love with it. I can't give her too much grief. I have a different reaction to it now then I did when I was 8-10. (when I first heard it) Being 40 now the hair stands up on my arms. She's right that the song has a beauty or prettiness to it. Like Fade to black, Orion etc. There is a dark beauty to the song and also a haunting, horrific aspect. Him suffering in silence and nobody can hear him. Trapped in his mind in a living hell. It's terrifying. What a nightmare.

Great reaction! Metallica was my first experience with metal, and I've listened to a lot of it since then, but surprisingly the best metal I've heard comes from a Japanese band called Babymetal. They came up with the idea of fusing j-pop and metal, and their stuff is just unbelieveable. I'd recommend checking out their song Headbanger live at Legend 1997. Cheers!

"the video is low keyed freaking me out" . That is actually the point. This is from the story 'Johnny get your gun. The point is that this guy after being blown up from a land mine. Lost his arms, legs, eyes, mouth, hearing, etc. so not being able to communicate with anyone, he is in his own hell. His only way out was to nod his head in morse code to hopefully reach some one. And his message was please kill me. Was a classic book as well as a movie. It's kind of one of those things that if you had not read the book, or have seen the movie, some times don't get what this is about. Still though. I liked your take on this song.

Once upon a time, there was a young soldier named.....lets call him ME. Me and his friends were all young soldiers that liked watching MTV in the barracks. MTV was music television, they played music videos. There were good times {headbangers ball}, and bad times {yo mtv raps}. Anyhow, many young soldiers could be found listening to many genres of music, singing along to their favorite songs whether other people wanted to hear them or not. But a strange thing happened when 'One' by Metallica played.....
No matter the skin color, favorite genre, or rank....
    Every mouth closed...
    Every ear listened...
and Every eye was glued to the screen.
You see, these young soldiers had chosen to serve their country. Maybe they thought about that a lot, maybe not. But, when this incredible song played, these young men took a few minutes to imagine themselves as the soldier in the video. Such 'pretty' music describing a nasty fact of life.
After the video was over, some talked about it a little bit, but most pondered their mortality, drank some beer, and lined up their shot on the pool table. Remember, soldiers or otherwise, they were still young men.
To this day, when I hear this song, I think about the friends and memories i made so long ago. Perhaps this song (or another) takes you back....somewhere. Enjoy the music, relive the memories, and live your life.
    THE END (?)

Video clips were taken from a movie which was based on a book called "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo (if memory serves). I chose to read the book in 7th grade english class because of this video. Thank you "Head Bangers Ball", (back when MTV actually played music for all you youngsters out there). It's about a man who has his arms and legs and face blown off in a land mine in WWI. "Like a piece of meat that keeps on living..." Truly sheds light on the horrors of war. My Great GF was a Marine in WWI and was exposed to mustard gas in the trenches, can only imagine what that must have been like.

It's about a soldier who is crippled by a landmine. He loses his sight, loses his hearing, loses his speech, his arms, his legs, and is basically left a vegetable; a prisoner inside his own body. It's an anti-war song, and speaks to the horrors that many veterans suffer. Metallica are a very deep band in addition to being excellent musicians.

Those video clips that creeped you out was from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun", the song is partially based on the movie & book by the same name. In the movie and song, a soldier is trapped in his on mind and war injuries caused the loss of arms/legs/hearing/mouth, essentially any form of communication.... So he resorts to taking his head in Morse code

    • @daveemerson6549

Metallica have said a bunch of times over the years that the song wasn't inspired by Johnny Got His Gun, the band only bought the rights and everything when it came time to make the video.
