  • This video takes a look at performing a simple ILS approach. Starting at entering the information into the MCDU, a brief look at approach charts, published approaches and vectoring yourself in for an ILS approach, explaining the procedures along the way. We also take a look at the correct speeds and differences between the kinds of ILS approaches we can make.

    Great video, explaining more than others. However, I am yet to find a video that explains the bare minimum - so imagine you have not done ILS before.
    Maybe a video for the future, where you skip the charts entirely and focus on the simple things and what buttons to push : 1) To capture the ILS you need to do this: a,b,c etc 2) Sequence for FLAPS, etc. The goal is to give the simplest checklist to follow.
    This video does explain that, but for newcomers there is a great deal of other detail, which is not critical :)

    Be aware of ILS configurations with an off-set to the runway - it's mentioned on the charts, but you have to look for it, always check for anomalities to avoid sudden suprises! Top tutorial, thanks!

    for me, your tutorials are the best ones out there. much more info to learn and implement. sadly i always mess up on the final landing phase as soon as i take off auto pilot. still learning though, learnt cat 3 landings but RNAV landings are just too tough for me still. i use thrustmaster TCA sidestick airbus edition controller, what a gem of a product.

    Really nice video again Gav. I noticed a couple of things.
    On the Rad nav page we put in the three letter code for a Nav aid. Like LAM, or MID or HON etc. We don’t need to put the frequency in for VORs as it recognises the freqency automatically from the three letter code. Not sure if MSFS models this yet?
    It may have been a Freudian slip but the MDA is not a “last minute config point”. As you said it’s the lowest altitude you’re allowed to fly to before you have to see the runway or lights and continue the landing. If you’re still not visual at MDA, you bin it and go around. For info you have to be in landing config by 1000’ RA (or 1000’ above TDZE).
    The profile we usually fly is flaps 1 within about 15nm & 220knts. Flap 2 by G/S intercept as you say. We fly about 180knts to 8nm and 160knts to 4nm. That’s pretty standard for an ILS. Gear gets chucked out by about 5 miles.
    Spoilers get armed once you put the gear down. We also put the nose taxi turn off lights on and the nose taxi light on and run through the landing check list.
    NCL is cat 3 now I think. At least our charts have minimums for a Cat3 auto land. The chart you had may have been out of date. 👍

    • @Easyjetsimpilot
      @Easyjetsimpilot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the clarification. Not sure if MSFS allows you to pop in the VOR designator just yet. Will have to check!
      Yeah I'd left the landing lights on as I'd not retracted them for the circuit around the airfield.
      The chart I brought up was a free one so everyone would have access to it. Not sure how up to date it is. (Least the freq's were still correct - though they don't change very often thankfully!)
      Thank you again 👍🙏

    • @VmcgHD
      @VmcgHD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Easyjetsimpilot No worries. I wasn’t sure if they had modelled the Rad Nav page correctly but thought I’d mention it as it’s often easier just popping the three letter code in. Landing lights can stay on below 10,000’ as it’s helps with visibility.
      The chart is the U.K. AIP produced one. There should be a date on it somewhere. Lido looks different still but you get used to the charts you use. I quite like Jepp charts as they were quite easy to extract all of the data you needed. Especially some of the more obscure data you didn’t look at every day.

    • @Easyjetsimpilot
      @Easyjetsimpilot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VmcgHD I'm much more familiar with the Jepp charts as they're the ones used by Navigraph. Any others & I find myself struggling to find the info - even though they should be the same.

    • @VmcgHD
      @VmcgHD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Easyjetsimpilot it always takes a few weeks to “relearn” what ever chart package the airline uses. I’m more or less happy with Lido nowadays. Some charts are really useful as they depict MSAs really well and the STARs are often only on one chart. So it’s easy to see what one you’ll do if the OFP says something daft. Some info and en-route stuff is buried but you find it eventually if you’re on a long flight down to Cyprus! 😂

    • @Easyjetsimpilot

    Nice tutorial. If this is going to be a simple ILS tutorial, please eliminate the extraneous discussions. This subject is difficult for us noobs and the extra, off topics that are not directly related to what we are doing only adds to the weight of this already weighty topic. Good video, just keep it bare bones basic.

    This is a fantastic tutorial thats helped me a lot. One question I have is, if you miss the G/S intecept because I'm too high, say at 3,500 ft at EGNT, how do I initiate the Go Around ? Do I need to manually descend to below the Thrust Reduction height and then go through the missed approach Eg. TOGA, increase Flaps by 1 and follow the chart procedure ? Or do I clean up the aircraft straight away and vector myself back in for another go ? Would I need to clear out the flight plan and re-enter it ?
    Thanks

      Sometimes, the sim doesn't do this and you have to put the freq in manually.

    Is it a MSFS behavior that a VIA stays in the route in MCDU despite one select NO VIA? Or is that in real Airbus too? That’s always a problem if I get the runway from ATC and enter that approach. I would guess more people had that problem. Best regards Alex P.S. Good tutorial.
