    I literally just finished making my own elizabethan shirt, and this video makes me want to start all over again and do all the things even though the project was such a pain 😅. Though this does seem to make the gussets a bit less of a pain. Going to have to keep this video in mind when i inevitably forget how much i suck at handstitching and decide to try making a shirt again.

    This looks amazing! It's funny how with modern expectations, I didn't expect to see decorative stitching on things like underarm gussets since we tend to want to hide those kinds of details. It really does look great though... It's Cohesive haha.

    One of the very first internet rabbit holes I ever went down was Blackwork (and when I say that was a long time ago, the year began with the digits 1 and 9). Only made a couple of napkins...way back when...Inspired to revisit.
    BTW: it's more precisely a buttonhole bar stitch...the long stitches are the bar stitch and can be left as is. It's used a lot in cutwork embroidery.

    Absolutely incredible work! The time and effort it took to do this...Gold. Freaking. Star. ⭐
    Took a class on blackwork last year. Was totally overwhelmed--not by the embroidery itself, but how to know your order to keep it identical on the front/back. The teacher couldn't explain it other than "you'll figure it out " which made my head explode. I'd like to give it another go...but I think I need to find someone left-handed, because I suspect that's part of what tripped me up 🤔

      That's... remarkably unhelpful. I will say that most period embroidery is NOT neat on the back, even blackwork. But someone else asked about reversible holbein stitch upthread so I might do a little tiktok tutorial or something.

    That shirt is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for showing the tied buttonhole/blanket stitch. Shame the embroidery close ups were lost (flippin technology). I love looking at Blackwork. Its not something I would have the patience for. That and me and counted work certainly do not go together. Give me a drawn/printed design to paint with thread.
    You are the 2nd person I've seen doing fingerloop cord. The other is Morgan Donner.
    Right back to tracing around some of my A0 sewing patterns in my paint program to create clear cutting lines and directions before sending to my printers. Something I should of been doing at the beginning of the week. The heat arrived in the uk and my brain refused to do anything complicated

    Wow! Beautiful work! Your partner is a lucky fellow. I recently discovered some table cloths and napkins embroidered in a similar style to blackwork done by my grandmother. They are counted patterns with the more "primitive" motifs found in eastern Europe with black outlines and colourful filling stitches. I would do a discreet knot at the end of a running stitch (either a stand alone knot like a french knot or tied to the last stitch) and then weave the end in back and forth under the last stitches. I'll do something short form, like a tiktok, on how I would do it!

  • @cherylstraub5970

    On the edge of the cuffs in the painting you showed, there is a black stitch that doesn't seem to be blackwork, Rather it seems to be part of the stitching that makes up the hem of the cuff. Do you know how it is worked? If so I would much appreciate a video of how it is done. If you have one already made, I would very much appreciate you directing me to it. please?

    I'm mostly curious if you know what the weighted cushion is weighted *with*? About how heavy is it? The cover looks like a wool? Is there also an underlayer of fabric that keeps the stuffing in, or is the outer fabric tightly woven enough to keep the inner material contained? (I don't need a pattern so much as a few more details... :) )

  • @MissyS1614
    @MissyS1614 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Just curious, how does the insertion stiching/hemming style hold up to wear and tear? I know you said it was a shirt that wouldnt have been worn as much, but is this a weaker form of piece joining and hemming than others? Genuinely just curious, since Im so used to tucking away my thread away from where it can get snagged or worn away as much as possible with later historical techniques
