  • Smock, chemise, shift, camicia, whatever you call historical underwear- it's always better with yards and yards of hand embroidery, insertion seams, and lots and lots of floof.

    I really appreciate the paper mockup, it makes it much easier to understand the process.

    I'm so glad to have found your channel and genuinely baffled that it doesn't have 100x the subscribers. Amazing quality, research and well-produced garments (and videos too)! Thanks for the inspiration 💛

      @@anotherdreamgonewest seriously! Technology is both incredibly helpful and absolutely baffling at times.... but I'm glad you're here and very appreciative of this thorough video! I made my husband a VERY amateur version of this garment way back in like 2008 when we were first dating/in college (we called it his "poet shirt" lol). I'd love to make him a more historically accurate, better-fitting and better-finished version soon and this is such a helpful guide :)

    I made this smock a few years ago and that is exactly how I did the insertion stitch too. Now I want to do another, it's such a fun project.

    The 17th century ois the most underrepresented period in fashion, IMHO. I'd love to see more of it.

      I agree! I think it’s maybe the furthest from our modern way of dressing and hasn’t been as heavily romanticized on screen- but it’s so interesting so I’m happy to oblige 😄

    Unbelievably beautiful work. I’ve just gotten my hands on the same Patterns Of Fashion, really happy to see someone’s (incredible) work based on the same book. Thank you so much for sharing and explaining your process so well! I’ll have to watch your other videos now to see how Stede turned out hehe :))

      Thank you! It was a lot of fun- patterns of fashion is an excellent reference. I learned a lot throughout the process, and I’m kind of itching to try some of the techniques again!

    really inspiring! so much that i change my plan of sewing a really normal/boring white shirt, and instead started to embroider my fabric with custom design (a mix of the design from the book you shared, and a costum that i really like from bretagne in france). I've nearly finished it and i'm really happy about my modern shirt with embroidered cuff and collar. Thank you again for the idea!

    I know the seams that join the insertion parts as faggoting. I wouldn't of thought to use that to join in a gusset.

    Lovely job!!! Well done tackling all of those new techniques. I’ve been working on my own pink embroidered 16th c smock this week, so this is perfect timing for some inspo! 💖

    holy molly this is STUNNING. And the embroidery... exquisite. You should try this on with the Italian renaissance gown you made earlier (though it would be completely anachronistic of course)

    • @anotherdreamgonewest
      @anotherdreamgonewest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! That is a good idea- I will absolutely be trying this on with some other gowns- it took too long to only wear with one, ha.

    When I was learhing patchwork and quilting, our teacher pointed out the mistakes made in really complex pieces and said that the sewers would say ' only God is perfect', and that there should always be errors, either accidental or deliberate, in your handwork.

    • @anotherdreamgonewest
      @anotherdreamgonewest  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s interesting- I took a quilting class (like, 10+ years ago) and the instructor said she always told anyone she gave a quilt to “there are five mistakes in the quilt” even if there weren’t just so the recipient would understand perfection wasn’t the point.

    I've just come across your channel, and I'm really enjoying it. As a 17thC re-enactor it's great to find a historical costuber who is not stuck in the 18th or 19th century. I've made my own version of this smock and I'm glad to see you came to some of the same solutions (and used the same lace). Good luck with your future sewing adventures.

    Tiny Aughra! I love her! Also great video. Thank you for tackling that smock. I want to attemt it too, but I was baffled by the side seams. Your video is a great help. Interesting fact - if you make the shoulder gussets too small - it will still leave the collar wonky. I learned this the hard way haha.

    • @anotherdreamgonewest
      @anotherdreamgonewest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! Yes I’m not so sure I got there 100% in the end- I think next time I’ll try a combo of the two insertion techniques (or something else altogether) it’s all a journey!
