- Applies to VW's from 1975-1998 (and some VW's from the early 2000's). Very simple repair!
Tools/Parts Required:
- Seat slider kit 171881213B
Note about the link below. These are not as high quality as the original form VW. I personally would recommend the original from VW, but they are more expensive.

Great video. Thanks! I have a Mk3.5 (golf) Cabrio in the US. I will be fixing the manual seat height adjustment, which didn't work well when I got the 2001 5 years ago and now does nothing. Recently the seat adjustment stopped locking easily in place for the front-back direction actuated by the level on the front of the seat, too, so I finally have to do something!

It’s on my list of things to film! There’s a pretty cool upgrade kit out there that I want to buy and install. It would still cover replacing the bushings, but also upgrading them. Google missing linkz. The website looks like it’s from the 90s

Great video. My plastic covers were not held on the same way yours are. They have a little metal clip that slides over the lower portion of the track

i used velcro to hold on those seat rail cover trim, works amazing.
Ooh interesting thought. You just placed it between the top of the metal seat rail and the plastic cover I assume?
@@OlisGarage yis sir. I am running mk2 covers so they dont have the pin. (dont think so at-least) Its been velcroed on for 4 years now, no problems.

Great job Oli, as usual. Done this many times on my mk1, mk22, mk3, polo a corrado. I don't know how you guys have in the US, but in Europe, you can buy cheap chinese knockoffs, which make your seat wobbly right out of the bat. Going OEM for these sliders and the front rubbery piece is the way to go, in my experince.
That’s a really good point. I actually went with the Chinese knock offs because I couldn’t find any of the actual ones in stock. The seats still work much better than they did before, but I have a feeling that they won’t last as long and that they would be even better with the OEM ones.
@@OlisGarage will see 🙂 they are hard to find sometimes, I always go straight to the stealers for them. Both complete sets are about 30-40 bucks. And OEM ones are made from a different, softer material then the cheapo ones.

Any trick to keeping the rubber bushing in place on the front of the seat track when reinstalling the seat? Mine constantly fell out and I cracked both rear plastic seat guides.
Had the same issue with it falling out. Put a little silicone adhesive on the bottom where it contacts the vehicle.
I actually did this like two days ago on my Mk2 Golf. Seat is still very wobbly I'm guessing the railings are just bent
Another person commented that the cheap Chinese mounts (basically the stuff I purchased on Amazon) might cause that. I’m going to buy some quality mounts and then see if it gets better. My seat wobbles a bit if I force it to, but not when I’m driving. So I’m still happy.
When I buy some that are not the Chinese ones from Amazon I’ll make a video again.

Does anyone know how to repair the backrest knob? Mine just spins round and doesn't work.
My 1987 Mk2 had a philips head screw instead of the push pin on the rail cover. There's also a plastic cap on the outside rail that needs to be removed. (another screw)

Is there a way to modify the seat rails so the seat will extend as back as far as it can? Basically touching the back seat. I was looking for a seat rail extender video.
Not easily. That involves extending the rails (welding) and also modifying the seat (more welding)
I ended up deleting the plastic guides. The Chinese ones would not let me reinstall the seats or they would crack (surprise surprise). The seats slide a tiny bit better. This is a frustrating project.
I’ve heard some people have bad luck with the Chinese ones. Apparently the ones from the vw dealer are not Chinese and are better. I’ve had luck with the Chinese ones, so that’s what I’ve been using.
@@OlisGarage TY. Going to drive to the dealership. The Chinese ones are ever so slightly bigger than original. Might help shave em down a hair.
Tried this on my 91 and it turned into a total nightmare lol. The guides snap into place easily but on opposite sides (lipped one on the inside so it doesn't slide into the rail). The center rail and lever are in the correct orientation with the lever on the inside. These seats also have the bolster lever to move the seat forward (to get into the back) on the inside rather than the outside. Did I just get a hacked up set of seats?? I'm stumped!
Oh wow, that is weird. Maybe someone did some parts swapping?
I will admit I had a bit of difficulty getting the seats to slide in. But when they are in the right spot they slide in no problem with that little tab facing the rail.
@@OlisGarage @ShredzMC I had the same issue exactly just now. I guess it depends on where you get the replacement clips from. I matched them up to OEM and the ones with guides do not line up. Also the plastic is very brittle. There is a reason why you get 10 sets. You will break 4 of them before you come to your senses and spring for the OEM ones. One hack is to not use the one with the guide tab and use another one without the tab. I'm going in search of OEM but the ones on eBay have very expensive shipping. One other note I bet the rails on the car get a little bent up from seats wobbling over time. This was a very helpful video though. Thank you.

Any idea where to locate the seat rail cover clips with the little pin. Just did the job and seem to have misplaced the plastic clip. I didn't loose the pin, but that's not too useful without the larger clip it goes in. Oops
Thank you @OlisGarage for a great video. I just put these into my cabriolet and the seats now slide much much better however they do still wobble side to side a bit in the tracks. Have you been able to solve this issue at all? I've also noticed that the back rest portion itself wobbles too. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to reduce that as well.
Apparently higher quality sliders can help reduce that wobble even more. However, I am not 100% sure. I think there will always be just a little. The back rest I unfortunately don’t know off hand how to fix. I need to take one apart sometime (and I have one that I need to fix the cable in, so it will be happening at some point!)

Yes, I bought it from aliexpress. A 6 six piece set. I don't know why, but I found the old rubber slider pieces too, when I was replacing them.
I found out that the vw mk 3 seats are bit different from the mk 2 seats you showed in the video, unfortunetly I found the 357881279-80 bushings to be broken and the 357881195 little clips to be missing. That could be the problem?
Any plans on a motor mounts video for the 8 valve? One of the things I'm not very confident in doing myself on my Golf
Absolutely in the plans! Not a difficult job. A bit tedious though. I’d recommend buying a bearing press. A cheap Chinese one works just fine for the hobbyist.

Unfortunately I do not have a carbureted mk1 or mk2. In the USA they almost only had fuel injected VWs when they switched to water cooled.

@@OlisGarage Okay. Thank you. Your videos have helped me to understand my vehicle better. I have a South African VW Caddy, which is a van/bakkie (or as an American would say "a pickup") based on a golf mk2. They were very popular here in the passed.
@@azharparuk5983 oh interesting! Never knew they made one based on a mk2. We had the VW caddy in the USA, but it was based on the mk1 platform. Definitely a cool vehicle.
Somehow the USA got all the fuel injected vehicles. And quite a few came with AC which is also nice.. haha.
I’m a big fan of smaller pickup trucks. They are so convenient and still fuel efficient.
Hey Oli, just wanted to provide some personal experience here. I ordered the exact slide clips listed in your description from Amazon, and I'm not sure if they are different now or if something is different on my car, but the seats still wobble on my 1990 Cab. Curious if anyone else has still had the wobble issue, or if the same kit has solved it for them.
Someone else also mentioned that they had a similar experience. Apparently the more expensive guides from VW, VW Heritage, mk1engineering are of better quality and a bit tighter overall.
I personally haven’t noticed any rocking of my seats sitting in them. If I pull on the backrest, then I can get them to wobble a tad.
Not trying to lead anyone astray here. I might have to buy a more expensive set to try out and then update the link.

Well I’ve actually only ever removed one, not replaced. From what I remember, no nothing too bad. You’ll need to make sure you have some padding on the floor (like how it is stock) as otherwise it won’t fit well.
There are some clips high up on the firewall that suck to get to. But that’s about it. Might have to remove the kneebar to get to those clips well.

Real question is where to buy new and good plastic guides? I bought China shit ones, and they are even thinner than the original ones that were used for 30 years... So I throw them to junk.
I need to look. Apparently the dealership sells some (someone commented that I think). Mk1 engineering also sells some, but I’m not 100% sure of the quality.
