Please... Where to purchase T5 smaller blubs and base.? Thank you
Great video, very straightforward! Might be doing this to my 09 Versys soon!
Lucky me I HAD a 2005.5 Jetta with a "maintenance free" automatic. It started slipping at 120K miles.....
note for myself that you show the location of the Clutch Bleed. Thanks
Hello. I have a Cabriolet 91. Could you please indicate what is the brand and part number of the air vacuum check valve you installed? Great videos. Thanks.
@@FernandoMunozMartinez-t5j part number and a link in description.
You should really show how to put on the other plastic bracket and what direction it goes. You Just kind of threw it on there real quick.
Easier to do if you remove spark plugs.
Same motor, almost same everything else for the diesel version- HOWEVER, IT IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE. Yes, it's a VW. Yes, the same pulleys and belts are used but diesel pistons ride above the deck and have very small tolerances. When you change your belt on a diesel version of this, be sure to rotate clockwise only and by hand only/ slowly. If it's stops or gets"tough" to rotate then STOP. It may be touching a valve which is fine but you will cause damage if you force it. Back it up counter clockwise and recheck your belt marks, it may have shifted. Cheers 🍻
where is that kneebar video at?
nevermind i just did it myself and i can see why you didn’t film it. those bolts were a bitch to get to
process is also the same for all manual/stick VW cars till today ...
The slag of the chain 25-35mm should be measured with the bike on the side stand only - it is written on the label on the swingarm near the axel nut. If the rear wheel is like in the film in the air, the chain will be pretty too tight. I've got the same bike - 2011 Versys 650. Apart this issue great video.
Is it necessary to use blue Loc-Tite on the threads of the shoulderless studs going into the cylinder head?
Oli what is your recommendation for an automatic 6spd DSG trans?
Funny, I just did a trans flush on my 020 yesterday :D Of course watched the video.
A word to the wise: Just in case its not been said before, use a floor brush or similar to pull out axle stands. Don't reach under with your arm to pull them out
Awesome, you covered my questions upfront! TY!
1993 VW Cabriolet, Digi, 174K. I have replaced both sensors with the 1.8 bar 1 Pin & the 2 prong Bosch Oil Pressure Switch; 0.5 to 0.3 Bar; When I start the car she is fine until it heats up. When the car drops below 2,000 rpm it flashes. I have driven this car 6k so far, so thinking it's not the oil pump. I use an OE Mann oil filter and 20W -50 castrol oil with zinc. Thoughts?
@@richardseidman8801 get a mechanical gauge and test the pressure. Your local auto parts will loan you one
@@OlisGarage TY for the fast response, your videos rock! What should the bar be at all idles? I assume if just below 1 bar at low idle, best to replace with a new oil pump? I see you have another video on that process. Is there a recommended pump to use/upgrade?
@@richardseidman8801 at least 30 psi at 2000rpm is what the book says.
Thas right you can fit new filter in cap first becuse it has so caled mahle pin on it that slides it self in hole on filter housing
I got everything lined up perfect the only problem now is I went to pull the tensioner out to replace it with the new one and it can’t slide out cause the motor mount doesn’t give it enough clearance .
@@sniperpaintcorrection remove the motor mount. Just support the engine under the oil pan with a jack. If you have Allen or internal hex bolts, replace them with normal bolts for future repairs.
@@OlisGarage I believe it’s the motor mount support with rubber bushing inside :: do I remove the three 10mm looking nuts? And it looks like the arm part above the intermediate sprocket has a 6mm hex bolt and maybe another one in the hole underneath. Are those what I’m suppose to remove?
@@sniperpaintcorrection upload a video to your channel and I’ll watch and comment there
@@OlisGarage I believe I posted a short video
Does this work on a 1985 Scirocco?
@@hagale1 yes
@@OlisGarage Thanks. I've also noticed that the valve cover nuts may have been overtightened in the past. The metal of the valve cover flange is dimpled at the holes on each end (from the torque spacers). What can I do to straighten those deformities in the mating surface?
Hey Oli, I did as instructed but now when I connect a 9v battery, the wire glows! Is this normal??
@@marcusf9530 not normal at all. There is a short circuit somewhere
Do you recommend attaching a jumper battery pack to the under hood + & - terminals to power the inside courtesy and overhead lights, retain memory to computers modules radio presets etc?
I hope replacing my speedo cable gear, is enough to fix my speedo. I did buy the cable just in case, but I hope I don't have to tear into the dash :D
Hi how u doing have problem wit my vw mark golf the oil. Light keep come. On when u Rev it just about 3rpm I did the test u show in ur video can I send u video so u can see what going wit my golf

Dude that's a game changer, I feel bad waking everyone up whenever I open the door lol
@@TinCupOutdoors unfortunately the locking of the door still is loud. That I’m not sure how to quiet down. But the door slides so much better and quieter now!! It was worth it.
Would be nice to know how it performed with the rear sprocket change from stock 46T to 44T?
My honest opinion, I would not spend the money doing it unless if you already had to change the chains and a sprocket. It’s maybe 200rpm lower on the highway compared to before. Really no significant difference there. And 1st gear is slightly taller now which really doesn’t impact me that much. That’s my honest opinion haha
@OlisGarage thanks Olis. I've noticed there is a linear Speedometer error which will likely be corrected by increasing the front sprocket by 1 tooth. But I've read in some Versys forums that it does not leave much clearance in that area and would be concerned if things got too tight there.
I will ship my car to you for this rebuild, interested $$$
clutch cables make my car to vibrate..what's wrong with it*

Hi Oli,great video 😀,can you put on a to do list to make some video about replacing a Clutch in Golf mk2,020 Gearbox. Thanks🙋
@@Nemanja_Ljeskovac it’s on the list!! I even already have the parts haha
I've had my Rabbit for 30 years, and the axles have always been one of those mysteries that I've never tackled. This is a great tutorial that takes the mystery right out! Thanks, Oli!
Great video! Do you need to use the rear break also to torque the engine sprocket?
The clutch pedal spring seem to have broken off, how do I fix that?
My car won’t start , I tested spark all the way back to the rotor not spinning , checked the belt , spins for a sec than stops . Noticed it’s missing teeth and doesn’t have a part of the belt to grip on to so it can turn the pulley .. would this belt be the reason ? I was worried it was actually the crank shaft
@@sniperpaintcorrection that definitely is at least contributing heavily
@@OlisGarageI’m trying to remove the pulleys at the bottom 6 mm hex . But the belts just turn with it and spin so I can’t crack them loose .. also when I turn the crank shaft the timing belt and sprocket doesn’t turn for me to line up top dead center. Is this cause of some missing teeth? Also the distributor rotor doesn’t turn… my car is a 95 mk3 cabrio 5 speed manual Should I put a new belt and tensioner on and then turn the crank to rotate the engine to tdc?
Love the video, as my CV has been giving me issues as well, I replaced both cv axle's (full arm replaced) I was worried they did not come with grease on the inside as there was a grease bag provided. I opened up the boot and there was grease inside already, But after seeing this video im wondering if the pregrease was enough. You placed a very generous amount. On top of this it seems that when Im turning LEFT ONLY (& only in motion) The transfercase area makes a single loud pop/clunk, It also happens when the steering wheel returns to center. Any ideas would be greatly appreciate it.
@@juulin2567 thank you! I always start with the easy stuff first. Check to make sure the bolts are right. Jack the car up on jack stands, start it, put it in gear, and now turn the steering wheel. Can you replicate it that way? Maybe something else is loose? How do you know where the pop is coming from? If you think it’s the axle, do you have the old one to put back on? When did the noise first start? Some thoughts and questions above that could help you narrow it down
Phew! That CV ball-bearing race was FUBAR! Folks - that is why it's important to check your CV boots periodically. When that boot is torn then foreign material contaminates the grease and your CV bearings unwittingly become a gravel crusher. Not good! Remember; preventative maintenance is cheaper than replacement maintenance! That said, I'd normally just order an entire new axle shaft. Typically VW has an extensive back catalog of mk1 Golf components, so they're inexpensive enough to offset the work and mess of rebuilding the CV axles. But, and I mean BUT, considering the terrible quality of aftermarket parts now (especially how the market has been flooded with cheap 'Chineseium' components), the idea of rebuilding them with quality name-brand subcomponents seems more appropriate now. It'll save you work time and money in the long run. Just don't wear your Sunday-Bests and wear gloves when doing them; LOL what a MESS! Thanks for the great video Oli, that'll definitely be booked marked for when I inevitably need to service my Mk1 Jetta's CV Axles. Cheers!
I think this was already an aftermarket axle. Unfortunately not the original VW stuff. But, I figured oh well I’ll rebuild it. It’s not that hard and it’ll make it last longer.
Great tutorial Oli, greetings from England
@@stephenhargreaves381 thank you! And greetings from USA 😀
Excellent how-to! I would like to mention that the CV joint grease is moly-based and is the nastiest grease you'll ever work with! I notice you are working with gloves. Smart move. This grease will NOT come out of clothing or off your hands/face etc. And for those of you following along in your Bentley please note it is not correct in how to orient teh inner and outer CV parts. It's skinny part opposite the wide part just as Oli mentions!
Thank you Oran! I have pinned your comment to the top. You highlighted the important things I didn't cover!
Guess I need to cross out the CV Axles shaft rebuilding section of my Bentley manual! Lets hope the Haynes and Chilton manuals are more accurate! Thanks for the info!
What is the VAG part # for that block of wood?
Haha!!! That one is NLA (no longer available), so you’re going to have to consult your own scrap wood collection.
Great - Accurate, informative and concise. This is the same arrangement as the early Corrado seat fixings - REALLY helped me Thanks
Happy it hear!! I try to keep them super to the point. I can’t stand rambling and clickbait.
Dang, i did this job about 7 years ago and it was hot mess without an Oli's Garage vid. Repairs on my 87 Cabriolet have gone much smoother since Oli.
Happy to hear that the repairs are going better with my videos! I have many more repairs that I need to do, and even more that I want to film!
@@OlisGarage Yeah, I did the drum brakes and bearings, ignition timing, coolant flange, alternator replace, power steering pump, among others all with your help. Doing the timing belt next. Thanks for the videos man!
@@jaweecudal heck yeah, I’m glad they’re helping!! I have a BUNCH of parts that I just need to film installing. Front suspension, bearings, control arms, etc. So more are coming!!
Oh nice. Yeah patiently awaiting the suspension vid. That's on my list!
Thanks!
For mk2s, the axle bolts are 33 ft lbs and the axle nut is 195 ft lbs. The ball joint is the same 37 ft lbs. If you have vented rotors, my friend taught me a trick for loosening the axle when the car is already jacked up. Remove the wheel, then put a few of the lug bolts back in to the hub so they secure the rotor to the hub. Put a flathead screwdriver in one of the vented openings of the rotor. I'd also remove the rotor screws that hold the rotor to the hub so you make sure you don't break them. Then you can break the axle nut loose real easy with a breaker bar. I do the same for torquing my axle nut.
This video was incredibly helpful, as i got both CV,s done recently. After having them installed (with wheel bearings+hubs) there is a strange popping noise coming from the transfercase area only while turning left at sub 20mph. Now im wondering if it was just because the bolts were not on tight enough/came undone.
For me, the popping/clicking/metallic claning noise was my CV joints failing. The previous owner didn't grease the inner CV joint, so it failed. In my other mk2, my boot was shot and I didn't realize until the joint was already popping.
They’re super easy to check, so I would definitely check the bolts
Just in time. I want to replace my axle next week. Love your Videos 👍🏻
@@Kopfkissen21 I’ll have a video on regreasing the CVs and replacing the boots coming up soon. If they don’t look damaged, I’d just degrease, reboot, and move on. The new drive axles just aren’t the same quality as the original stuff.
💯% on the retorquing the axle shaft bolts. I swapped out the clutch on my Mk1 Jetta last year, and torqued the axles bolts to factory specs. 4 of them loosened to the point of almost falling out only after a few hundred kilometres of weekend drives. RECHECK THE BOLTS, FOLKS! I took no further chances; pulled all of them and applied blue Locktite. I knew it would be a bear to loosen them in the future, but since this is a weekend car, I figured the clutch should last another 40 years no problem (bearing any unforeseen complications...which, sadly, is discussed below). BTW - speaking of axle shafts; my driver side axle flange seal has since started to leak. Sigh...now the fun starts. Ollie - have you ever replaced axle flange seals with the trans in the car? I am not looking forward to doing that. I built a puller/press tool as per VW forums, but the project still seems daunting. It's a slow leak...maybe I'll do it next year! 😆
@@miketeeveedub5779 comment pinned to top!! I also learned the hard way..haha. Funny you ask. I need to do that in the white car. Honestly it’s not hard. Just takes a little bit of time. Brokevw is a website with a lot of good info that covers that repair
@@OlisGarage - LOL way ahead of you! BrokeVW's website "020 Flange Removal" section was where I got the inspiration to build my flange puller/press. It is indeed a great website for VW knowledge! Looking forward to the seal replacement video! ;)
