Tuning an 0411 Swapped 454 Big Block GMT400

  • Last time I showed you guys the wiring process of converting this 1999 K2500 Big Block Truck from the black box PCM to the more powerful 0411 LS1 style ECM. This will have many benefits in the long term, from optional 3 bar speed density, a higher RPM limit, and a whole lot more. This process starts with a 2002 Chevy Express operating system and L31 calibration, which has to be tweaked a little to work with the 454 L29. I use HP Tuners software to do this, but the beauty of the 0411 swap is you can also use EFI Live as well.

      I wonder if this will work on a LS with a 8L90 or 10L90.
      Gen 6 and Gen 7 BBC were LS like.
      Im not sure if yours is a Gen 5 with peanut ports.

      You can use the gear wizard to edit the ppm on hp tuners. Just need to know the tire sizes and gear ratio. they also have a tire size calculator in the tools tab. Keep up the great work man!

    I know its been a while, but one other option for copying data from one file to another in a compare (besides licensing both and segment swapping) is to go to the red and blue differences view which shows you the value of the difference where identical values are zero. It doesn't work for all tables but for most you can just select all and set the value to zero which only changes the value in the original file to match the compare. Just found the channel and looking at some of the interesting older videos, great job...

    Just an FYI the fail safe for no coolant temp should be -40 degrees F. This failsafe allows the engine to be properly fueled when the air density would be worst case scenario (ie -40) and therefore would never run the engine lean

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      because it was getting full voltage rather than none, the ECM thought the temp was maxed out, and it will add a little fuel at hot temps to cool things off also...

    @LawrenceTolman One thing you missed in this video related to the alternator is to disable the L and F terminals under System/General/System Options. Disabling the codes doesn't disable the idle control routines that rely on alternator control and feedback. Not disabling those options or connecting those wires WILL adversely affect idle stability.
    I did this swap on my 98 P30 L31 a few years ago using TunerPro RT and PCM Hammer. I also have HP Tuners. TunerPro is better for setting up an OS to start with, changing VIN, etc to avoid buying extra credits from the greedy bastards at HP Tuners. HPT is better for logging and tuning. If you haven't looked at TunerPro, It's definitely worth checking out.
    I had one small issue with my swap. My post-cat O2 sensors were mixed up after the swap. I'm not sure if the spreadsheet was wrong or if the P30 harness was made incorrectly. It didn't cause any noticeable drivability issues or MIL, but I could see the effect when graphing the O2 sensors using Torque. One sensor would stay high most of the time and the other would stay low most of the time. It seems that the PCM tries to command one bank at a time slightly rich to check sensor response and catalyst efficiency. With the sensors swapped, the test would hang until the other bank went a little rich. Unplugging one of the sensors confirmed that they were wired to the wrong bank. I repined the sensors to the correct bank and the problem went away.

    Great work. Really liked the explanation on all of the HP Tuners tweaks. There is so much in there. I’ve only ventured in to the trans portion on mine. Tweaking shift points, tcc setting etc... As far as the PNRDL setting, I had a hell of a time when it was set to none. I wired the stock sensor up for PN only to give the PCM a ground signal in park and neutral and it seems to be a lot happier. Low speed part throttle was really wonky until I made the change. If the shift shaft on your trans long enough to put a PN switch from a 60e or 80e?

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, the trans already has a range switch on it actually, I just wanted to avoid running four more wires if I could avoid it simply by changing one parameter in the tune. once I Did the re-learn, it seemed to run just like it did before

    Great vid! Did you have any issues with the new ECU not talking to the Transfer Case Control Module? I did a similar swap and my 4x4 is all jacked up, that's the only thing I can pinpoint.

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      no I didn't, but because I switched to a NP241 the transfer case control module is disabled. However, from when I did the conversion on the transfer case, I was pretty sure the TCCM is a standalone system and only sends a signal to the ECM to let it know its in 4wd or in low range. The one thing I havent tried yet is driving in low range, and because the express van tune is from a 2wd vehicle, not sure it will be paying attention to the low range input.

    Oh man.. this is great! Cant wait to see how you tune for the modifications you make. I'm looking to 0411 swap an L31 engine to be able to handle increased compression, better heads, cam & intake. Looking forward to your next video, as always!
    Edit: To tune w/HP Tuners, assuming a compatible laptop/computer, what do you need to be able to pull tunes, view & edit, and load new tunes to the PCM? Do you need to pay per vehicle or per tune? Aka: once the PCM is 'yours' are you free to modify it unlimitedly or? Thank you!

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks! you'll need a windows based laptop to run HP Tuners on, and you are free to "read" as many vehicles as you like, so you can save the tune files to reference later on. For modifying the file and flashing the ECM, you need to license both the file, and the computer. If you read a tune from your truck, modify it, and flash it back in, one license covers both the ECM and the file. If you do like I did and find a new file to flash on your computer, you need to license the tune file and the ECM separately (two licenses, total of four credits for my project)

      You can (sort of) but many of the tables have different axis labels and different scaling, so it won’t be a direct copy and paste. But some of the data is close enough to to get a good comparison from

      buy them before you start the project, and they are stored in the interface. you only get charged once, and once you license the file you can make as many changes as you want.
