      Just wonderful, been searching for "what color should your eyebrows be with gray hair?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Aanabriel Bewildering Ascendancy - (do a search on google ) ? It is a smashing exclusive product for discovering how to get rid of gray hair quickly without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got cool results with it.

    From my personal experience, you can do the professional hair color at home without using box dye. Just do your research and buy the right products. I used to use box dye on my hair and the results varied. Then I had a coworker recommend buying a volume and a color dye tube. Similar to what he showed and mix and dye my hair with that instead. And the results were so much better. I agree box dye isn't the best, but you don't need to go to a salon either.

    I’m a hairstylist and whenever I do my family’s hair I gladly use box dye as it’s easy to travel with and much cheaper for me to buy. Obviously I buy powder bleach in bulk professionally but hair color is way overpriced. I also love the liquid consistency so I can apply way easier than majirel. The thing is that we as professionals are fooled box dye was a completely different product. If you apply it correctly there isn’t more damage than with professional products

    Every time a hairdresser answers this question they always say NO to box dye and their reasoning is that “you can’t get the same results as salon” or that “salon job is personalized to you” like yeah DUH obviously we are not here thinking we will get the same result paying 10$ as paying 350$... we’re not dumb to expect that, the question is IS BOX DYE SAFE FOR HAIR? Will it damage hair SIGNIFICANTLY more than salons dye or are they relatively the same?? I’ve had dyes done at salons manyyy times and they have left my hair way more dry and fried than box dye has. Looking for a straightforward, scientific answer to this question but sadly doesn’t seem like I will ever get it

    • @MikeDeCanter
      @MikeDeCanter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      hey xxxilva simple scientific answer is that box dyes contain higher ammounts of ammonia which will damage and dry out your hair as well as the technology is completely different. the strength of the oxidant is aslo unknown . sorry if it wasnt clear enough for you x

      I am not a professional and I can give you an answer based on personal experience, since I dye my hair at home. I have used both, and what he says is true. I normally used igora royal from Schwarz kopf, which looks just like my natural colour. Once I used box dye and it basically fried my hair. It was very hard to manage it afterwards, and didn't turn out the right colour.

    • @xpndnglmts

      They aren't different. Higher Ammonia is what transforms the hair to the color in the tube. The "professional" version may have more conditioners It. That the only difference. That why you can't even get a straight answer from this triggered stylist. And yes Loreal makes the store brand as well they are the exact same company, catered to different demographics. I am a natural level 5 with 30-40% grey. I want to be a level 8 without any warm tones, ultra ash. I used box dye 7.11 and you are right it destroyed my hair and it became copper. I waited a couple of months and many repairing treatments. I then stripped all colour and used Majirel COOL COVER 7.11 with a blue additive. I loved the colour it’s it cool, to warn at all, a little darker than what I wanted.
    Now the question, when my roots grow (cool level 5 with 40% grey) what would be better? a Majirel Cool cover 8.11 or a Majirel high lift 8.1.? The cool cover says it can lighten up to 3 shades with 30v. I know you will tell me to go,to a hairdresser but sometimes they themselves are not sure, just gives me your opinion please.

    I’ve been using Casting Creme Gloss color 1021 for years now. For who doesn’t know, Casting Creme Gloss is ammonia free unlike Excellence. My hair is very long and healthy but that’s to keep in mind that my natural hair is already blonde, an “ashy” kind of dark blonde and that it’s not brown. With the grey undertones in my hair, it lightens up easily without much effort which is a great advantage for me. And also to mention that I did first get my whole hair blonde at the salon before starting to use box dye on my roots…so, it highly depends on your current hair color, the state of your hair and a lot of other aspects. I do take great care of my hair, use professional hair masks, hair oils and leave in conditioners…So do keep in mind that whatever you’re doing to your hair, whether you’re getting it done at the salon or at home, you have to take care of it and commit to being careful, gentle and nourish your hair in order for it to be beautiful!

    • @anya9212
      @anya9212 ปีที่แล้ว

      Box dye especially blonde box dye usually has high amounts of ammonia and a high developer, such as 40 volume. I highly recommend choosing another option, Excellence came out with an ammonia free version and there’s also Casting Creme Gloss which is a semi-permanent hair dye but I promise that it works wonders on your hair and it gives your hair so much shine and softness. If you tried box dye before and that color worked for you then keep using it. There’s different hair types with different needs and care.

    Home Box Dyes are made to be safe and easy to use by non-professionals. Because of the way they are formulated, they tend to be somewhat more limited in what they can do. The reason most people get poor results is NOT BECAUSE THE PRODUCTS ARE BAD but, because people MISUSE the product. Trying to get their hair lighter than box dye can make it or dying over the same hair repeatedly to change the shade. It is not the dyes fault when you bleach, dye, bleach, dye, bleach, dye, bleach, dye, again and again. Professionals will often blame box dye for poor technique on their part or wrong selection of product or lack of skill / knowledge when a salon dye job goes wrong.

The haircolor formulas as a whole may not be tested, but the dyes used MUST BE.

    Even though it is true that professional is better than boxed (especially since I will always prefer someone else dying my hair for me) I still cannot tolerate the stench of ammonia from the professional one. The strong ammonia smell from the professionals always makes my eyes water! Which makes me wonder how safe in fact it is for my hair. Being that they still have to do all the deep conditioning to get my hair from drying and breaking. With the boxed I get a softer more pleasant smell and leaves my hair soft and shiny. Maybe it depends what brand you use.

    @hermles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The colour depicted on the box of Excellence or in the colour chart of Majirel results ONLY if applied on white or bleached hair. For that reason the results vary depending on the base colour of your hair. A colorist knows how to obtain the colour you want. Box dye is not bad but the developer is fixed to 20 volume peroxide. A colorist can use a developer of volumes from 10 to 40 volumes. Depending on the sophistication of the coloring you want you need a professional colorist to do it or not. I have been having my hair colored at a salon and during the confinement applied the same colour, (7.11) Excellence and could see no difference. The reason is 7 is only one level above my natural colour (box dye can rise your colour level 2 tones with no trouble). Excellence and Majirel are both from L'Oréal and both have amonia. Excellence is "one size fits all" but it is good if you want to keep your original colour or a subtle change. Majirel is the professional line and it gives the colorist (if he knows about hair colouring) the opportunity to create a personalized colour to meet the taste of the customer and obtain sophisticated results using the appropiate technique in every case.

    You would be Amazed at how many people have come into my salon with hair that looks and feels OK but after a chealating treatment and clairifying shampoo to remove all the coatings on it from the products they use and the hair is a TOTAL WRECK, not from my treatments, but because it is wrecked from all the chemical processes and heated appliances used and the products just covered it up like putting on make-up - It doesn’t FIX the problem, it just covers it up and then, when they go just one chemical treatment too far, their hair just collapses from all the abuse and they blame the last chemical treatment because all those cover-ups made it look and feel good and they thought their hair was healthier than it really was.

    Mike, I have a question for you. I used to work with home hair colours and noticed that level 4 is dark brown, 5 medium brown, 6 light brown, 7 dark blonde, 8 blonde and so on. But in the hair salons and in France Spain for example, 4 is medium brown, 5 is light brown, 6 is dark blonde, 7 is medium blonde and so on. Could you explain the discrepancy please. Thanks.

      John that is very bizarre to me! 1 - 10 depth numbering system is international! never came across it being different. All brands have the same depth numbering system

    • @jimbearone
      @jimbearone 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The standard level system should be: LEVEL 1 = BLACK, 2 = DARKEST BROWN / BROWNISH BLACK, 3 = DARK BROWN, 4 = MEDIUM BROWN, 5 = LIGHT BROWN, 6 = LIGHTEST BROWN, 7 = DARK BLONDE, 8 = MEDIUM BLONDE, 9 = LIGHT BLONDE, 10 = LIGHTEST BLONDE, 11= PASTEL BLONDE, 12 = WHITE / PLATINUM. Some companies condense or omit certain shade levels for their own reasons.

    My curly hair has been bright copper for over 20 years and I never bleached it just used box dye. I always get the same color as the box and never damaged my hair, you just have to learn how to apply box dye. Most people don’t buy enough boxes that’s why it doesn’t come out right. I figure there is more of a gamble choosing a hairstylist than there is choosing a box dye that has been formulated by people a lot smarter than your average person.

    I have a question. You put in 15 mils of Majirel and added 22.5 mils of developer - but stopped adding the developer when the scale got to 23. Shouldn't you have kept going until the scale read 37.5? The mixing bowl wasn't empty when you said you were adding 22.5 mils of developer, so it should have been added to the 15 mils of Majirel already in the bowl. Or am I confused by what you said in the video?

When adding the contents of Majirel and developer, you said you put in 15 mils of Majirel and when you added the developer, you said you were putting in 22.5 mils of developer. If you look at the scale, the total mils at that point was 23 mils. If you add 15 mils of Majirel + 22.5 mils of developer, the total mils should be around 37 or 38 mils - not 23 mils. I don't think you added enough developer. You only added enough for the total mils to be 23 - but 15 of those were from the Majirel.

    I do agree...only black box dye is fine, everything else nope...because most have high developer in it, and that is what damage the hair the most. I do not need stronger than 20 volume (6%) for my natural hair, unless I want to be level 10. I do like to be from level 6-8, no more. My natural is level 6-7.
    The only way one color will work with every textured and color, is that that color has developer 30-40.

I only left it on for 15 mins and my hair has taken colour very well, so they must be very strong! My hair is almost black and dyed it black. Glad I did not leave it on for the 30 mins required. I think it might also depend on your type of hair. For example, I've been using the ammonia free box dye for years and i have thin fine hair! I just recently realised how much i've ruined it, not colour wise but quality hair wise. The hair dresser told me (and honestly the one I went to lives in a different country so it wasn't really in her interest to tell me this as she knew she won't see me again) that my hair is very damanged and I could see it too because I started to loose a lot of hair so she used a "gentle" hair dye. She used a different product for the roots and a different one for the length and I saw a different even in the washing after when I lost less than when I dye the hair myself.

    A few years ago I used l'oreal paris casting creme gloss on my mam's hair. It lifted my mam's light brown hair to light blonde and covered her greys. The developer must have been super strong which is very scary because it was supposed to be demi permanent. I used it on my hair thinking it was less harsh. I've changed to professional colour from Sally Beauty now.

      In fact it has 7.5% oxygen in it (higher than 20 volume) Demi permanent can cover gray to some extent so using higher developer than 20 probably let the dye penetrate her gray hair deeper when a color is being used with something higher than 10 volume don’t use it to tone and expect it to lighten and cover gray

    I’ve coloured my hair for almost 40 years 😱. I’ve had it professionally done as well as coloured it with box dye - I usually colour it at home, I only use L’Oréal Excellence Creme, I have tried other products with poor results for my hair. I have healthy thick hair and use high end salon products that protect it re shampoo, conditioner and styling products. I get very good results with the Excellence creme - I have stubborn greys and am over 50 percent grey - I also leave the colour on for 45 minutes in total, only colour my roots, with the occasional comb through to refresh the colour in the last 10 minutes. You do need to somewhat know what you’re doing when colouring at home - something I didn’t start doing until having had salon colour for quite a few years. I’m fortunate in having a hair dresser who will work with me in giving really helpful input. I stopped salon colour due to needing to touch up my roots every three weeks due to how fast my hair grows. I get a lot of compliments on my hair and everyone who compliments me is surprised to hear I colour my hair. The greys don’t grab the colour as well as the non greys and so they look like natural highlights. Hope this is helpful to anyone thinking of colouring at home.
