I've had quite a few requests to test "box dye" since my shop up video, so here you go!
And no, the thumbnail is NOT click bait...I was SHOCKED.
The video is packed with -
We take a tour around the packaging...
Are the instructions simple to understand?
How easy is the @clairolna @ClairolUKI Natural Instincts to use?
Then there are the results...plus my thoughts as a hair stylist on how to get the BEST from it at home, with application tips.
And of course, how does it compare, being a box dye, to professional hair color I use on the daily?!
Not forgetting what might well be SHOCKING to you...?!
If you've used the line yourself I'd love to get your insight in the comments and if you'd like this to become a series, which hair colour would you like me to test NEXT?

Thanks for watching…and for all your wonderfully kind comments. What’s YOUR favourite home use hair colour? 👨🏻📦🙌🏻
The conditioners that come with box dyes are phenomenal. I wish they came in full size bottles
They are…but you know, not dissimilar from what you can buy off the shelf - look for ingredients like dimethicone. I talk about it in my other “box dye” videos. Thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Yes. They are beyond incredible!
I’ve called them up before and requested that they sell it individually. I know people who sell them on eBay.
@@sunflowerbaby1853 Many off the shelf conditioners have very similar formulations.
Me too they are amazing
@@theworldofcraigplease make a video for the
Conditioner that are similar to the conditioner used in these hair boxes. They are great
LOVE the product list 🤯.
So many hairdressers tell you how awful ‘box dye’ is. And how bad it is for your hair. And here is the proof that it isn’t.
Many of my clients use home hair colour, I even give them advise on that to used or where they misses a bit etc.
Excellent video 👏🏻
It is a great visual eh?!
They do…and it’s (clearly) uncalled for. Thank you for watching and I bet your clients feel FAB!
👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Your videos are so informative and your accent makes them even more fun to watch! 🤩
Awww, thank you for watching and for your kind words. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
I was always guilty of shaking like there’s no tomorrow as was afraid it’s not gonna be even! 🤣
You’re not alone there, the formulations are so clever they mix without a lot of vigorous shaking, ha. Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙌🏻📦
I recommend this to my clients when they travel and/or need to touch up on their own. It's amazing! I never poopoo drugstore products, I actually recommend them often.
I was very impressed…and the formula, as I expected (I had no idea before checking) isn’t a million miles away from a pro product.
Thanks for watching and GO YOU! 👨🏻📦✨
@theworldofcraig Thank you to you for spreading the good information on your platform and in an entertaining way. I love watching! ❤️
Thank you for this, I have not left the house for 5 years and even before that could not afford the hair salon. I cut and dye my own hair, and I ensured to educate myself so believe you can have great hair doing it yourself. Id love a salon visit, but its just not possible.
You’re most welcome, really glad it helped.
Thanks for watching…and go you!
Also to add to my comment. I love your videos. They’re so unbiased, informative and educational. Which is really helpful. I do my own hair at home and recently switched from drugstore to professional products. I found the exact same thing… they do the job. With semipermanent I found professional products to be stronger. But what amazed me is that professional products are less runny hence more difficult to apply evenly. That’s defo the case with Loreal (a brand I’m weirdly and obsessively loyal to).
Video idea: colouring your hair extensions. When I was wearing them, they’d always go a lot more ash even when using products with a golden undertone… like 5.3… and required extra toning.
You’re so kind and I’m chuffed you’re enjoying my content. Folks like you are the reason I’m here and I’m grateful for your support.
I do think home products are a little more viscus but I guess that’s to make them easier to apply..?
Thanks for sharing your insight…I’ve added your idea to the list - I’ve worked on wigs and extensions a lot, so that’s a great idea. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Late night in hotel rooms with Craig… sounds fun lol 😂
Lots of skincare and an early night, ha.
I'd love to see a series, where you examine different home hair colour 😊
Noted, thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Omg yesss. This is needed!
@@oheyitskayyyyyyGreat! Thanks for watching.
I have been using natural instincts for years and I love it and am never disappointed in the tones it gives. Thank you for doing a vid on it. I do tend to shake the bottle too much and my next go around I am going to be more gentle and see if there is any difference.
That’s great, glad to hear it’s given you the results you’re enjoying…I loved it. Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Testing box colors is awesome! I use different ones each month to see which ones cover my grays best. Please keep doing these videos - awesome!
It was a really fun video to make and I genuinely was shocked…but pleasantly surprised.
That’s a great idea! Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
I'd love to see a series, thank you, you are awesome!
Marvellous, noted….thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Thanks bunches for this one!
You are so very welcome. Thanks for watching and for all your fab support. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Thank you for clarifying that! It's useful and impressive. I was retrenched and cannot afford to go to a salon but I have to be interview ready so your advice is so valuable.
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching, glad I can help.
Good luck! 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
I'd love to see more at-home colouring products and techniques. Thank you for your informative and enjoyable content!
Ok, noted. Thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Here for all the primo tips!!
Thank you! 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Thank you for this review! I have been using this product for several months, I have a lot of gray and love the way it colors my hair!
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching.
Glad you’re enjoying it. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
I love your videos!! 😍 So easy to follow, informative and they always give me a massive dose of optimism about my hair rather than it being a never ending stress about what I should do next. My holy grail search is for a colour which coats my approx 50% grey hair so that the result is dark but translucent. Whenever I have gone to hairdressers they just look at me in confusion and either offer to COVER or NOT COVER. Looking at your swatches the end colour looked translucent and so I am going to give it a go... 🙏
Awww, that’s great, thanks for letting me know…and for watching.
In my opinion NI gives exactly that result.
And yes, lots of hair folks aren’t keen on “blending”, for whatever reason…? Let me know how you get on… 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Bless you! LOL. Fascinating stuff and love the comparison of the ingredient charts. Way too many stylists spout anti-drugstore hair color vitriol when there is nothing wrong with it (most of them). I used drugstore color when I first used to do my hair; no problems. Now I use professional color/bleach, but I don't notice huge differences to be honest. I just like having the control of different developers and specific color bases. Thanks again!
And thank you for watching and for your kindness.
Agreed on all points and I’m glad you’ve found what works best for you. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
I just want to say i think you're hilarious. Your jokes are great and I've yet to see another youtuber who has your sense of humor which is similar to mine lol. And you are an angel for sharing all of your insights. You have definitely helped me more than anybody probably ever could, coming from a diy colorist who had to learn to dye my moms hair during covid and i still continue to. I recently dyed my virgin hair with demi perm because i wanted to blend my first grays.
Oh and yes on the series. I didn't see that part of the video before I commented lol
Well I’m glad I make you lol…and that we share that sense of humour.
But most of all I’m happy I can help with your hair! Thanks for watching…and for your kindness. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Interesting and informative. I stopped home hair colouring as it always went a brassy red instead if ash brown, i might give it another go now.
Thank you and thanks for watching, really appreciate your kind feedback.
Let me know how you get on if you do… 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
OMG! I've been coloring my own hair for years with "boxed dye" and as I am 80% grey, I was using a L'Oreal Excellence Permanent. I don't have my stylist do this, as I would be there every 2 weeks, as soon as those white roots start to appear. Then,I discovered Wella Color Charm at the local beauty shop and I fell in love with that product. I went quite dark - a level 5, and over time, I had a lot of build up and I hated the demarcation line I get with the permanent, so I began looking around for a demi. I am unable to purchase the Shades eq here in Canada, but I am able to purchase the Wella Color Touch, so I ordered a few colors to try, along with the emulsion and I absoultely LOVE how it leaves my hair. I went quite light and now I am trying to find that "perfect" shade that suits me best. Since watching your investigation into the ingredients, I admit - I'm shocked! And pleased! I wonder if the the developer is the same as the emulsion? Absolutely LOVE your channel Craig!
Hi Maureen, thanks for watching and sharing your insight, love that you’re getting great results from Color Touch - I also use it in salon when I need more blending and it’s fab.
I would assume (I’d need to check) that the developers are almost the same - as the gentle developer in CT.
Fab video Craig..i use olia 8 ,i like it as it has no ammonia.never used Clairol before, maybe ill have a go at this make..I promise i won't vigorously shake the bottle, like i have been 😅
Thanks Marion…and thanks for watching.
So Olia is ammonia free but it still has active ingredients very much like ammonia…as does Natural Instincts.
Ammonia isn’t harmful at all.
Haha, good for you. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Great video Craig. I would love to see you test the L'oreal Magic Retouch Permanent - from my experience, I have found it to be less damaging on hair and the colour last significantly longer than e.g. the Clairol root touch up - its also got a built in brush applicator that i feel helps the dye properly penetrate grey at the side and roots. I love a saloon colour - esp for highlights, but do you home hair colour in between visits, dependent on budget
Thanks Jo, ok I shall start a “testing” list! Glad you get good results from it.
Thanks for watching and sharing your insight. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Craig! I’ve been so excited for this video, especially since this is the colour I use 🙊. I haven’t even watched the entire video yet, but I had to comment my thanks! Happily surprised Wella is behind Clairol, since I’ve used and loved Wella (especially their paints) for so long!
After watching your wonderful video my question to you is: how damaging would you say this colour is to hair?
I don’t have gray to cover, but love to deepen my natural hair tone and use this because it is the most gentle I have found. I don’t want to damage my natural hair, as I do enjoy going back to my True Tone from time to time. I’ve tried many glosses but most don’t “adhere” much to my natural hair. I love love the Kristin Ess glosses but can’t find them since I moved to the UK, so I thought semi/demi permanent would be the next best thing.
Once again, many thanks! You’re the only hair professional I watch and trust on TH-cam and I’m so glad I found you and took your advice on many products I’ve grown to love!
Awww, that’s great! Thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Thanks again for your kind words.
It isn’t “damaging” in my opinion - the reaction is very minimal…it is more opaque than a gloss type product.
As you see in the video, it did make the swatches very shiny.
@@theworldofcraig thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate it ! It does indeed do the same to my hair, I just wasn’t sure if that was just due to some of the chemicals. So good to have your professional opinion. Looking forward to your next video. 🫶🏼
Please do a video on cool brown formulas and tones thanks
In home hair colour? Thanks for watching.
Thanks!
OMG! This is so kind and thoughtful, thank you. 👨🏻🙏🏻❤️
Awesome informative video Craig, just wondering if we can ascertain the volume of the peroxide as I'm tremendously prone to brassiness and that information would be a great guide on whether a demi would turn out true to colour for me?
Thank you and thanks for watching.
I would think (I’m generalising) it’s around 6vol - similar to the gentle developer of Color Touch.
It’s a zero lift formula if used following the brands guidelines.
@@theworldofcraig Thanks heaps Craig, that sounds pretty safe from my orange mop😆
I rally enjoy ur youtube content i uaed to be an hairdresser but i use olia 80/90 mixed together for the colour i want works for me x
Thank you, so glad you’re enjoying the channel, thanks for watching.
Glad you’ve found what works for you. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I loved this product until I got more greys. They were quite difficult to colour. You've inspired me to have another go.
It might not be the best formula for you if you want complete coverage - it’s a demi permanent, so will blend grey but not necessarily cover…it does of course depend a lot on hair type.
That said, I really loved it.
Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
❤ THANKS CRAIG…can I ask would this be ok to colour grey on bleached hair. .I’ve often wanted to touch up my roots but darent myself. Thank you for a great informative video 🙂
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching.
Hmmm, I’d need a little more info…my gut is immediately telling me that would be tricky to not overlap and a demi would grab on the bleach.
I'm guilty of vigorously shaking my hair dye so thank you for that tip, I will be more careful in future
Nothing to be guilty of, just want you to get the best from it…and not have it cover your ceiling when you snap the cap off! Ha.
Thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
I’ve been using Clairol Natural Instincts for a while but recently changed to Casting Natural Gloss after watching YOUR video in which you recommended it!😂Which one should I use now?😂😂 I need a video on Casting now!😂👋
Awww, how have you been getting on with the Casting?
They are both very good products. Thanks for watching 👨🏻📦✨
@@theworldofcraig I’ve only tried it once so far. I liked the colour but my scalp felt a bit ‘dirty’ afterwards. Like it deposited a lot of dye onto my scalp that didn’t come off even after a very thorough rinse. It took a bit longer for it not to stain my towel after washing my hair too. I’m giving it another go to make sure.
Love your videos. Thank you for always responding to comments!👍👋
@@AgnaeviThat’s great insight, thanks for sharing…and for your kind words. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Love the video, lots of helpful info! I think you're great! So, I've always heard you're supposed to "fill" blonde with red/ gold tones before coloring dark to prevent muddy green tones, but you didn't do that on the blonde swatch and the results were still great. I'm a yellowy/brassy level 9 blonde and want to try this color but I'm nervous about it looking "muddy". Any suggestions? Thanks!
Awww, that’s great! Thanks for watching and for your kind words. There’s an entire (recent) video dedicated to just that here on my channel, from about a month ago.
@theworldofcraig thanks for replying! I just watched that video. Another great one btw! But it seems more geared to professional colors, not box ones, so should I mix the Clairol Natural Instincts 5 Medium Brown, which is neutral, with a 5 golden/ warm brown? Thanks again. So glad I found your channel! 🤩
@@candacemalaspino4097 As I mention in the first video you watched, there isn’t really anything in it, the principles are exactly the same.
I can’t give you a specific formula for your hair as there is way more to it than that - in principle I’d go warmer than cooler.
@theworldofcraig that's good advice, I'll give it a try. Thanks again 🙂
do you have the kristin ess hair gloss line over there in the UK? i used it and it came out nice.
Not sure, we don’t have a lot of it over here, I’ll have to check. Thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Only thing id worry about is what vol is that developer 🧐? It doesnt say. honestly i would just use my own 10 vol in case they try to sneak in a 20
The developer is 6% - most drug store demi-permanents use it, as the “energy” needed is minimal. I wouldn’t recommend ever mixing anything other than what’s in the box.
Thanks for watching.
Problem is with browns they always turn orange warm how do you maintain an ashy brown?
As you’re depositing only with Natural Instincts they shouldn’t fade to be too warm.
If you’re using a permanent hair colour at its fading warm I would suggest a blue coloured shampoo - but keep in mind it will make your hair look deeper/darker as it cools it down.
I’m curious. Why do most of these home box dyes say it will last 6 to 8 weeks. I’m lucky if I could get 3 to 3 1/2 weeks before the gray hairs are showing everywhere along my roots. And I do not wash my hair other than like once a week so they cannot blame it on frequent washing.
Just curious why it doesn’t last longer. And I use L’Oréal Preferance.
Also would love a video on how to glaze your hair at home and which products are the best.😊
They use 6 to 8 weeks as a guide but everyone’s hair grows at different rates - also, the product in this video is demi permanent, meaning it doesn’t cover grey as such but blend it, so there isn’t a harsh grow out line (generally, every head is different)
I’ve recently posted a video on the new Redken Acidic Color Gloss line, that has a clear gloss that can be done at home.
Thanks for watching.
@@theworldofcraig Thank you 😊
Hi Craig, I'm allergic to a couple of the preservatives in the conditioner that goes with this particular hair dye. Can I use a generic conditioner or do I have to use a special one for colour-treated hair? I've never dyed my hair myself before, so your videos are really helpful. Thank you!
Hi Lauren, you sure can, it only gives a “cosmetic” feel to the hair.
If you’ve not used Natural Instincts before please be sure to do a patch test following the guidelines.
Awww, thanks for your kindness and for watching! 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
@@theworldofcraig Thank you! I really appreciate your reply. You're great!
Video suggestion: Taking level 2 to 3 hair to level 10 blonde. Specifically highlights. I ask because last summer I bleached my hair (more than once) to get to a level 10 using BlondeMe and my hair is not in the best shape at this point. I have quite a bit of grow out now and I would like to let my hair grow out and be healthier but have it be nice and bright and light around my face. Any suggestions would be great. I am fairly comfortable doing my own hair I just cannot settle on a foiling pattern/plan. And, I would like to leave as much as possible untouched for now.
Hi there, thanks for watching.
So my advice would be not to attempt that many levels of lightening yourself, it’s just too much for the hair to take…I know that’s not an ideal answer.
I talk about exactly this in my “level 10 blonde” video from a couple of weeks ago.
@@theworldofcraig I know… and I agree. So, here is question 2. (And, thank you so much for responding.) If I just bleach around my face once and get it to like a 7, maybe 8 but that’s optimistic. What is the best way to get it to blend in with the lengths. I have long hair, mid back, back and I don’t really want to lose the ultra blonde lengths yet, but, I also really am over all the bleaching lol (Tell me to buy a wig….. lol)
@@LaineyW1983 That’s another rather HUGE question…and I’m afraid it’s so nuanced it’s impossible to give you an answer remotely…I also don’t want to be responsible if you don’t get a great result.
It would be best toned with a demi…if it’s an 8 I’d perhaps drop down a level to tone…depending on what result you want.
Good luck!
Have you ever used the L’Oréal Casting Crème Gloss Demi Permanent colour? I find that these are very opaque and last a long time. I just wondered what your take was and wether you found them good and recommended them or wether you found another brand that was better quality. I like to have a darker iced cool tone (ashy) brunette colour….. I just wanted to add also that im around 40% Silver now @40 maybe alittle more than 40% 😂
I have - I mention them in the other “box dye” videos here on my channel…they are in a playlist.
Casting is great - very similar to their pro offering. Thanks for watching.
@@theworldofcraig I’ve had a look through all your videos to try find any that mention casting crème gloss but couldn’t find any sorry that’s why I asked. I wasn’t sure wether to stick with them or swap :)
Hi Craig! Is it possible to get my hair done with you? I don’t have Instagram only TH-cam but happy to send an email through. Thank you!!
Hi there!
You can send me an email through the form on my website - theworldofcraig.com
I can give you any info you require by reply.
@@theworldofcraig thank you! But I checked on the page and don’t see anywhere where I can email!!
You have to click on terms and conditions then you’ll see the email - afraid I can’t give my email out on here as “robots” might pick it up and I’d be spammed. Thanks.
The thing about it is just not one uses several that's when you get the buildup of color because people do not know how to apply color and how to do a retouch or a virgin retouch and then the other issue is it takes a half a bottle of shampoo and conditioner to ever really show how bad it can do your hair in!!!
Application does play a part for sure…but the products are really good. Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻📦
Its the only fault with these kits. You cant do a patch test with the colour because you have to throw it after a short time and a patch test takes 24 hours. Should have a small sample like size of a mcdonalds salt sachet with each box.
You could very carefully measure out 1gram of each (or use a 1/4 of a teaspoon measure) to do a patch test, then seal up tightly. If you’re then planning on doing the colour 24-48 hours later that would be fine.
So good love your vids would love you to test 9 a + 9n or the 8 sometimes I find them more ashier than salons which makes me a weee annoyed 😮 the conditioners in the boxes are BRILLIANT we need these too ! ❤thanks love your work x Rae from ozziland 🐋🦘🕷️
Thanks for watching Rae and for your kind words.
I’ll keep that in mind for sure. You can find very similar conditioners on the shelves of the drug store…there’s nothing unusual about the ones that come in the box. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
