My Apology & Love Letter to Bloodborne - Bloodborne 2023 Review

  • In this Bloodborne 2023 review I admit how many wrong assumptions I made about Bloodborne. Having now played almost the whole of Bloodborne and The Old Hunters DLC in 2021 - I wanted to outline the assumptions I made incorrectly about Bloodborne when it was first released in 2015. I made some snap judgements about the game and never looked back - until now.
This review is aimed at (hopefully) convincing anyone who is still on the fence about Bloodborne. I aim to answer the question "is Bloodborne worth it in 2023" for anyone who, like me, may have previously missed the game.
This Bloodborne review is based on my blind lets play over on my other channel. If you would like to take a look at that there is a link to the other channel below.

Yep, this is me, I picked this up a couple years ago and got absolutely slapped by Father Gascoigne my first go around and swore off this game forever. After getting good at some other action games like GoW and Nioh I recently came back to Bloodborne to challenge Gascoigne and actually bested him on my first try. After that I was hooked and finished the game, and now I'm working on the platinum. So good!

the combat and atmosphere and level design are amazing no matter what, but i was disappointed to feel like there was no real reason to switch armors or weapons from the default ones. it takes a deeper understanding of the game to make more unique builds, but that part of the game is finally satisfied after at least 1 full playthrough. also farming blood vials and bullets kinda sucks especially with no direct lantern to lantern warping. if they patch lantern travel, 60fps, and port it to PC, I give it a 10/10

Because it wouldn't make it any better! The only thing that would make it better is quicker loading times and I am sorry but no Pc is faster than Ps5! I know this because I have watched someone play Resi Evil 8 on a 3090 so I am guessing he has top quality SSD, now I have beaten RE8 in Ps5 with not 1 loading screen! Whilst watching this Pc gamer playing it on a Pc that 99.99% of Pc gamers haven't got! And it had loading screens all through it! Now don't get me wrong, they were like a couple of seconds long, but for a Pc that cost 3 to 5 grand? That is BS! I payed £450 for a platform with the best games that Pc nerds beg for! So then, the best experience is on the £450 hardware! By the way I own 4 Pc's and they are great for what I use them for, but gaming, it can't be beat when it comes to consoles! Gaming is about playing games not fps! Ps4 had games that look better than anything on Pc! That's 1.4Tflops of power and u talk about it being a
" waste "😂 If it wasn't for console and console gamers u Pc nerds would only have home made and indies to play! But because of these " wasted platforms " u get to beg for the best games in the industry, and u get to enjoy the multi-plats that only exists because of consoles and console gamers! I bet u own some old trash Pc that isn't much more powerful than the vanilla Ps4 anyways! But i have noticed all Pc nerds talk like they all own top notch Pc's when we know this isn't true and only about 1% of Pc gamers have top notch monitors and Pc's! Just enjoy your platform and pack in being a Pc fanboy who thinks waiting and hoping the best games in the industry come to your platform is what gaming is about. I've been avoiding any type of souls-like game from the moment i heard about their steep difficulty and learning curve but Bloodborne was the first FromSoft title that i've wanted to play the moment i saw gameplay footage of it. The aesthetic and overall structrual design of the world is extremely charming to me. That's why i was eyeing this title for so long yet i couldn't bring myself to actually play it but after 6 years i finally decided to give it a chance and finished through both the DLC and the main game. It was an incredible experience so i decided to start a ng+ right after finishing the game. Now i currently have atleast 60 to 50 hours of playtime on Bloodborne and i also finished Dark Souls 3 just recently as well. I advice other people to not get intimidated by the games difficulty and give these games a chance, i promise you won't regret it.

There's a reason I have the Hunters Mark tattooed on my body, no matter how long I stay away from bloodborne, I always end up returning and loving every minute of this game, its by far my favourite game hands down.
The atmosphere, the soundtrack, the fast paced combat that encourages an aggressive brutal playing style, the general look of the areas, from the Victorian style of Central Yharnam to the harrowing and sickly look and feel of the Fishing Hamlet.
The bosses, Gascoigne, Vicar Amelia, Ludwig, Martyr Logarius the list goes on, each one a mixture of dark, disturbing and fear inducing excitement.
I've put over 1000 hours into Bloodborne and is one of the only games I have a platinum trophy for and I'm just glad you're enjoying the game dude, hopefully you continue to enjoy Bloodborne for many years to come like so many of us here.

As a big fan of Bloodborne I would say that the reviews you mentioned in the customization point weren't really wrong, not exactly anyway. Compared to even Demon's Souls, which has an extremely stripped down weapons list compared to Dark Souls or Dark Souls II, Bloodborne has an incredibly small weapons list. 15 main hand weapons, 11 offhand weapons (a few of which are garbage and one of which is a bad shield), and then 11 new main hand weapons and 5 new offhand weapons (one of which is a shield, this time a pretty good one) in the DLC. Armor-wise the base game of Bloodborne is full of cool armor sets but weapon-wise it's definitely a step down from the previous games, at least in terms of sheer variety.
The reason that nothing I wrote above really matters is that the style of Bloodborne's weapons are so much more memorable than many weapons in Demon's Souls, Dark Souls or Dark Souls II. Because Bloodborne has such a small list of weapons, each with such a distinctive visual design and play style, it makes each weapon feel distinct and unique from the others and they quickly become memorable. Meanwhile, the other Soulsborne games I listed have many times more weapons than Bloodborne even when you compare their base games with Bloodborne and its DLC, but many of their weapons have the exact same move set and have very similar artistic designs. For most weapons in the weapon categories in Demon's/Dark Souls I/II, the only thing that really changes between them is their damage numbers and stat scaling. In practice this means that while many of those weapons will be powerful and viable, none of them will be as memorable because you will have lots of options to choose from, most of which having very similar designs and aesthetics.
In short, Bloodborne proves the idea that sometimes less is more. The amount of weapon variety is objectively and undeniably less than in previous games, but the care and attention to detail that went into each one of Bloodborne's weapons is such that when you attempt to compare them to the weapons in the games that came before, for the overwhelming majority of those weapons there simply is no comparison. This is the point that those reviews missed, even though from a purely logistical perspective they were not incorrect.

    • @Farengast
      @Farengast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Agreed and I consider this to Bloodborne's strength. I loved the Demon/Dark Souls games for sure. But always found the weapon, spell, archery, faith, magic, etc. etc. etc. options to be bloated and laborious. And allowed too many options for cheesing bosses just by hitting them with the one thing they were weak to such that they became trivial. Bloodborne didn't dumb down Dark Souls imo, it stripped away the bloat and fat leaving behind a lean and focused game. Exploiting boss weakness only got you so far so you had to get gud to prevail. The limited weapons gave you a chance to explore each one and feel the timing and the poise break and the hyper armor intrinsically in your bones. It removed character development options and forced you to master melee attacks and dodges while DS let you hide behind shields and spam ranged attacks, throw bombs. I think Bloodborne's leaner gameplay is 100% a feature not a bug.

I'm not lying when I say I've beaten the final boss to Sekiro with 1 hand.
BB and DS can't be played that way, but Sekiro definitely can, the style of gameplay focuses mostly on deflecting and attacking, if you can learn to switch hand positions to shift focus from attacking to moving very quickly, the entire game is playable very smoothly.
Will it be harder? Yes. Can you do it and feel like the most powerful person ever? Yes.

The thing about this game that makes it stand out above Dark Souls isn’t just the atmosphere and story, but how addicting and fun this game can be. Where in Dark Souls you can just create a heavy build, this game is all about offensive. There’s no real defensive maneuvers you can take considering the only shield you can get can be overcome by just one attack. It’s very immersive, which makes the atmosphere that much more potent. Plus: I love Lovecraft, been a fan of his work for many years and have gone to write short stories for my own personal enjoyment with his aesthetic, and to have a game that properly explores his style is beyond amazing. We finally got a proper Lovecraft game

Dark souls is a masterpiece of level design... until the game reach the second part, unfortunatly. It's more linear, but not that bad. Good levels for most, just lack of the nice "oooh, from there i can go there" from the first half.

I've never played Bloodborne but always wanted to or was curious about it, the idea of playing the game always crept in the back of my mind but never made the leap because I was intimidated tbh. Just started playing nioh and it's challenging but after a while you sorta get used to things and it is challenging but in a weird way it's like a stress reliever. As a gamer we should want a challenge from time to time, I feel it helps to go into these kinds of games with a mindset of "hey I'm going to get my ass kicked from time to time and that's okay".

I nearly quit Bloodborne when I could not get past the group gathered around the fire in Central Yharnam. It was my first From Software game, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The only thing that kept me going was how satisfying the combat was. Every time I died, I knew what I had done wrong. The whole game felt like a cycle between frustration and growth. It wasn't my character leveling up, it was myself getting more competent. Now, I consider Bloodborne to be a masterpiece and probably my favorite game of all time.

  • @sopranophantomista
    @sopranophantomista 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm really glad you're enjoying it! I, too, was late to the party, only buying a PS4 in 2019. After telling a group of friends about my purchase, I found myself with one of them urging for me to try Bloodborne. Now, I'm not a person who enjoys a steep learning curve. I stress very easily, and it's not a fun time for me. However, with gentle encouragement, and even with him popping into the early game to help me out on the first boss (Cleric Beast), he left me to it with Papa G. It took me several hours of banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to beat him, but when I did, man was it ever a rush. I popped on excitedly to Discord, and the first thing out of his mouth was, "I think she likes it.'
Look, even if the game *isn't* your thing, you should grab it on sale, as it's relatively cheap when it is. Not be too into the Bloodborne cult, but playing through the game has made me a better player, recognizing patterns sooner and adapting quickly to them. Ultimately, each boss is a dance, and once you learn the rhythm and the steps, it can be a joyous time. The game encourages aggression above all else, and learning when to take pot shots (or swipes) at each boss is highly important. Take the game at your own pace, and if that means you start up a few new characters with different starting weapons, then do that! Play how you want, even if you never play it at all. Just know that if you do decide to get the game, you'll be in for a wild ride when and if it finally clicks for you.

All I’m saying is that bloodborne was my first soulslike and I recently played it and man I loved it. It was difficult since it was my first but I was addicted to exploring and beating more of it. I’m kinda more used to linear games so I was really confused when it came to lore and things. But I never finished the dlc because I got elden ring lol… idk if I’ll be able to go back. The first dlc boss, Ludwig was truly the biggest challenge I’ve faced in either game so far- took hours of constant attempts and eventually I choreographed nearly all his moves to slowly cut him down 😭 it was painful

I bought Bloodborne at launch not knowing it was a From game and quit after the BSB (I had no idea where to go). It took Dark Souls 3 to get me into Bloodborne. The lower learning curve of DS3 for a Souls game introduced me to the mechanics of a From Souls game. Everything from the obtuse character quests, constructing builds, items and importance of their descriptions, hot swapping between weapons, invasions, etc., all the stuff I failed to pick up from barely trying the previous games. Beating DS3's main game and all the optional content, I dove back into Bloodborne. To date it's the only game I've 100%ed. As much as I love every aspect of the game, from the level design to the enemy types to the boss fights to the insane amount of optional content, it's really the sound design that I love the most. Bloodborne has to be one of the greatest games ever made for sound and score alone.
I adore the lore of Bloodborne. It's my favorite in the entire series but it's very difficult to access it without some work and without some context on the game development as well. The sound however.. is less inaccessible. If you experience Bloodborne for nothing else.. play it in the dark with headphones. I also think it's worth playing a proper Dark Souls game FIRST before playing Bloodborne. Bloodborne is a departure from the Demon Souls/Dark Souls combat formula. There's a ton of player subversion baked into Bloodborne by the Devs and having the prior DS experience adds yet another dimension to the experience. Souls games in general are incredibly rewarding experiences when you get over the hump, but for me Bloodborne stands apart in that the combat is so enjoyable that the struggle itself is actually pretty damn rewarding as well. I think I spent 10-12 hours trying to beat the Cursed, Defiled Amy in my original playthrough. No regrets.

My experience with Bloodborne is actually quite similar to yours. I first heard of the game when it released, but it didn't look too interesting to me, and when I heard it was by the same people that made dark souls, I was turned off but the news that it was an extremely difficult game.
However early 2020, my brother convinced me to play it, and after several months, I finally finished it and was blown away, and I platinumed it within a month of beating the game for the first time. Absolutely adored it and it's probably my second favorite game of all time. Such a great game, and I know it's not for everyone, and that's alright. It's just what I wanted out of it, so if someone else doesn't like it, that's alright.

An arcane build is amazing. I have trouble playing any other way because it's so fun. It has a reverse difficulty curve. Early game with an arcane build can be hard. You have to focus your leveling almost exclusively to arcane to get it over 50 (maybe clear to 99 eventually) arcane to get the most bang for your echoes. Then as you progress arcane becomes so over powered the difficulty drops significantly. And doing the chalice dungeons is a must for doing arcane as that's where the most powerful arcane gems reside. Arcane can be rough to start, but is very satisfying.
If you do an arcane build I suggest you consider streaming it, or recording it for YT. You don't have to, but hardly any let's players do it. It would just be nice to see someone give it a go.
Great review of a great game.

Bloodborne has a massive care into fashion funnily enough, as the armors offer little real defense to most attacks. So for new players, wear what you want because it looks good, not because its’ stats are high.

I still learn new things about the bloodborne lore even recently and I’ve been playing since it first came out

I loved the game’s atmosphere and world but that’s about it..played it once, finished it and threw it away. I hated the lack of equipment variety “weapons especially” and the messy map design along with the story and characters.

I'm with you, i had to push further for the platinum, it was hell, i was so done with it the moment i got the platinum and deleted it right away. So many ass boss designs, only two of them were actually hard, i died mostly because i was clueless, the game tells you nothing, it's so not fun. Definitely one of the most overrated games in my opinion.

Late to the party too! Only picked it up because it was free with my PS+ subscription last month. Was looking for something to tide me over until Elden Ring, and boy, how I fell into this game! Absolutely love it. My first FromSoft game was Sekiro, so I was looking forward to trying another one of their titles. I'm super glad that I did. Wishing now that I would've picked this up years ago.

My favourite of all time. I'm 41 out of interest. Been gaming since the Sinclair Spectrum! I remember physically shaking from adrenaline after a lot of the bosses.
And yes, the magical 2nd playthrough is the boy.

Amazing game. I'm glad you gave it the chance it deserves.
I would add that those reviews citing the lack of customization were written A) before the DLC which nearly doubled the weapon count, and B) in aome reference to the much more vast list of options in the Souls games. Of course, the weapons had much more depth in general. The DLC definitely alleviated many issues folks had with the weapon option list

Took me 5 attempts to make the conversion from dark souls to bloodborne. When it clicked and i adjusted to the combat system it was the best gaming experience i ever had. Mind you that i finished the whole game plus dlc without parrying once.

Been playing since launch and the only enemy i can successfully parry is the fat dudes with bricks

@@fartdonkey8290 But its very doable without parry so people shouldnt be afraid.

I tried playing Bloodborne a few years ago and upon getting my ass handed to me by Father G, I gave up. About a year later, I returned, finally beat him, and quit again after I reached Blood Soaked Beast. Recently I returned once more and have truly realized why it’s on every Top Ten PS4 Gsmes list. It’s phenomenal and I’m actually getting really good at it.

We have all been there :D its a really really hard first boss (not optional) in the game so many give up there, sadly. But after beating him it get a bit easier for a while.

Bloodborne is my comfort game. I've played it so many times I can finish a playthrough in 9 hours and have done a run with almost every weapon.

I first played Bloodborne in 2019. It was my first foray into the Souls genre. At first frustration was the overwhelming feeling, but as I perservered, I started to love the game, it's mysterious way of environmental story telling and it's lore by the end (with a little help from Lore Hunters).
After Bloodborne I dived straight into Sekiro the moment it came out and after that Dark Souls 1,2 and 3. This year I finally got to play Demon's Souls.
I beat all of them, even platinuming Bloodborne and Sekiro and it has become my favorite gaming genre and FromSoft one of my fav devs. All thanks to Bloodborne opening that path.
May the good blood guide your way!

Bloodborne is everything I thought/hoped The Order 1886 was supposed to be and more. It's one of my all time favorite games and I actually got the platinum trophy for it. Still play and recommend it to this day.

Arcane build is the hardest to start with(behind bloodtinge) and kind of depends on chalice diving but once you get the hang of it, it’s very rewarding. BroccoliGang where ya at??
