    *It's been a while since I did a video game topic, hasn't it...?* Well, if there's love for it, I'll keep making more of them. Next week's video and the following week are voted by Patrons over here www.patreon.com/ryanhollinger - some pretty interesting choices coming through!

    Bloodborne lore buff and someone who still replays it here. Your analysis is great and is unique to your experiences. I myself believe the game teaches about perception, seeing between the lines. The accepted world being layered with truths that are horrible (beast plague) but ultimately reveal the root cause (the Hunters destroying the Fishing Hamlet) of many of the terrors experienced on the surface, if you dive deep enough. On the concept of layers the world itself is layered with the different nightmares, especially the DLC which is more literal.

      @ThatDamnScottishGuy Yep. More or less, the Massacre at the Hamlet (and by extension the Hunter's Nightmare) is a symptom of a deeper problem, just like the Plague of Beasts is a symptom of that same problem.
      That problem being the insatiable pursuit of knowledge and advancement, or rather the lengths to which men will forego their own morals and throw caution to the wind in the name of progress.
      The Church believed in the enlightenment of humanity, and to that end they discarded their ethics and the wisdom of their predecessors at Byrgenwerth. And they paid for it.

    You got the theme of the doll losing it's strings fairly accurate. in the lore Beasts are made when people consume too much blood and lose themselves to their beastial natures, and when people lose themselves to their insight they either go mad, or turn into something half man half something more as seen with the alien monsters(the little blue men in the woods and the Orphanage). In the true ending, the player balances the two out, consuming enough blood echoes to physically grow past your human body without losing to their inner beast, while gaining enough insight to see the truth of the cosmos but not be driven mad by it. Thus becoming the first man to ever successfully ascend from a tiny human, into a true proper infant great one.
    You shed your humanity and your human body, cutting your strings, and grow into something greater than human, but only by not getting drunk off the blood of the hunt, or going mad from the cosmic horror you come to realize.
    This spirals down into a very very interesting rabbit hole. Go read "the Paleblood Hunt" by "RedGrave. He made a 107 page book detailing all the actual lore of the game and DLC that can be found, and how he thinks it all fits together. It gave me the eyes that I had lacked before.

      I could go on for hours on how much I love this game. I played the souls games first and they quickly climbed to be part of my personal pantheon of favorite games. But when I bought bloodborne on sale in 2016 it even surpassed the souls games to be my number one most loved game. Bloodborne, sequelless to this day is more of a mystery than souls is. Souls had 3 titles to explain itself (even if 2 doesn’t do much for the overarching story). But not only is bloodborne my favorite game but the old hunters is the best piece of dlc I’ve played ever and worth every cent I payed for it.

      Emotion doesn't get you far, and usually feelings are an extension of an intellectual process. The fear he explains in this video is due to the existential quality of being exposed in a world composed of horrific creatures, an emotion derived from human fears of malice beyond your control. Emotion is evolutionary biology, intellect is our way of analyzing and understanding reality. I'd rather be a cold sociopath than a subjective person who believes that decisions should be acted out due to your feelings. To quote the ancient philosopher Shapiro, facts don't care about your feelings.

    • @DemonLordSparda
      @DemonLordSparda 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@Whaylie I guess you missed the part where I talked about balance. Emotion and logic are both parts of being human. Ignoring one facet of yourself and only focusing on the other is a recipe for disaster.
      Logic in the extreme leads to people leaving sterile emotionless lives. Emotion in the extreme leads to no thought. Finding the balance is what is important. Intelect doesn't trump emotion, and emotion doesn't matter more than intellect.
      Unfortunately too many people believe that one thing has to win out. However, balance in all things is almost always the best course for everyone.

    • @loonar7960
      @loonar7960 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Amazing vid! Honestly i really like your take on the fear that thte game manifests. And in truth i think bloodborne really can be open to interpretation like that. Like there's lore, facts on a page but that shouldn't take away from the visceral reaction someone has when playing it for the first time.You put into words something i've had trouble with about how bloodborne can depower you like most other horror games, but it can also lift you up, cause i think we all came to a point where we were ready and even excited to face the challenges, we were ready to fight back and "win" and i love that angle.

    The fear of the Unknown, I think personally is the true art of what is horror to me. I'm so inlove with bloodborne and its lore. I always wanted something like this with games. Not many horror games understand the idea of good horror, like not helping you at all and letting you bring your true knowledge to the game and when the game says something to you that's actually meaningful as well and Bloodborne gets that cosmic fear right. I think it's a true love letter to HP Lovecraft's works. Anyway enjoyed your video, nice work Ryan.

    Going into this game mostly blind was one of the most engaging gaming experiences I've ever had.
    The gradual transition from Gothic to Lovecraftian is just totally mind blowing and terrifying.

    Your analysis also plays into another one of the themes of the game. You state that part of the game is pushing past fear. At the same time, the aggression you ease into as the game goes on make you less and less human. You devolve more and more into a beast, less and less human as you succumb to the blood you have been using the whole time.

    That's what drug me so heavily into Bloodborne from the start, the idea that YOU are the nightmare for everything you encounter. I started to pick this up when the Yharnam NPCs would scream and tell you to get away, flipping the expected response from other Soulsborne games that you are the one that's being hunted. I like how you mention that when you don't fear death the game becomes much more liberating, because that's one of the important parts of the ingame lore; once the Hunters use the Old Blood they become gradually more and more violent and bloodthirsty, being drawn to the Hunt without any regard for their own safety, eventually becoming beasts themselves.
    Some characters even mention that "were it not for fear, death would go unlamented", and "without fear in our hearts, we're little different from the beasts themselves". Fear is a constant presence in Yharnam, and it was the lack of fear of the Unknown that eventually doomed the town.

    I can't even explain the feeling but I remember one part of the game the old abandoned workshop.
    The old abandoned workshop gave me that feeling you get when you're in a nightmare and you think youve woke up but you havent

    I think what makes this such an excellently creepy game is simply the unknowns. You never know quite what's going on, or even where you are. In a dream? A nightmare? An alternate universe? In the mind of a Great One? Our world? All of the above? It invites your brain til fill in the blanks, like two kids sharing ghost stories and becoming increasingly scared in a tent sleepover.
    It has this unique feeling of something always being slightly *off*, or not quite right. The insane crying and laughter behind the closed doors in Yarnham. The realization that the Amygdala have been observing you from the towering buildings all that time, with no real understandable motive. The design of the city which seems alive, and... architecturrally not quite possible to live in at the same time. The guard at the door who's been dead for a long time when you finally enter. The fact that Gherman in his sleep mutters that the endless cycle of dreams is driving him to desperation, begging to be let out.
    I think the quote from Micolash sums it up best (I may be paraphrasing): "the nightmare swirls and churns unending"
    The game stays with you. Life-changing in some ways, at least to some personality types.
