  • So is this new lawsuit against Hills Pet Nutrition legitimate? is it a marketing ploy? is there any evidence? as a former Hills rep who lived through the DCM scare, what did I see and hear?

It never ceases to amaze me that people don’t appear to realize that one diet doesn’t necessarily work for every dog……my dog is 12 years old and has been fed Acana grain free for 9 years and his blood tests (last one done a month ago) are PERFECT in fact my vet says she wishes all the dogs in her clinic, even the younger ones had such good labs! He has perfect body composition too! I have a friend who has a 13 year old Golden that has always been fed Kibbles and Bits…..she’s in great health and has perfect body weight. Yes diet plays a big role; yet there are other factors to consider! I have only used Hill’s prescription diet once, with a foster that was so obese on coming into rescue that she couldn’t walk. Hills was amazing for her; after two bags and building up her exercise routine I transitioned her to regular kibble and when she was adopted she was an absolutely perfect weight. I will say one thing I respect about Hill’s is that they do more for shelter pets than any other dog food manufacturer and I appreciate that!

Too much wheat and barley in the Hills stuff, both react to these two ingredients, either severe ear itching, biting of legs or the shits and stomach noises for days with a ton of gas.
Truth be told too much grain free in Australia, every new food is adding pulses, it’s getting really old.

I think Hill’s Science Duet should counter sue this individual/company with a defamation lawsuit. I took a moment to look up who this individual is that owns that company and what is the company name.
Thank you again, The Pet Food Puzzle Guy, for all of your hard work. I am sharing your videos with my friends ands coworkers who have fur babies, to give them solid information and peace of mind. Yesterday I received boxes of new wet cat food (age appropriate) for both my American Classic Shorthair(ish) Silver Tabby and my Sphynx cat. I also received the new dry kibble for my American Classic who is 12 years old. I am awaiting the new kibble for my Sphynx cat who is who is two years old. All of it is Hill’s Science Diet. @@PetFoodPuzzleGuyI was looking to see if you have a video/thoughts on Nutro Wholesome Essenetials Salmon & Rice adult formula kibble? I am switching Gracie, my 12 year old, slowly over to her new Hill’s Science Diet 11 year plus kibbble. I am still awaiting my two year old Sphynx’s new kibble, Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Sensitive Skin Chicken and Rice recipe. I still have about 7 pounds of the Nutro. Should I continue to work through the remaining Nutro and switch Moses over near the end of the bag or make the switch now?
By the way, I was feeding them both Orijen wet cat food. Moses started breaking out with a lot of welts and was scratching a lot. I think it was one particular flavor combo, but after hearing about the too high levels in a number of categories ands Moses braking out in an allergic reaction over numerous areas across his body, they will no longer be getting that ever again. I just did an edit on my comment to add that Moses is already talking allergy medicine twice a day. So him breaking out like that with that wet food is alarming. I have been using an OTC spray for hot spots and wounds. Changing his wet food and using that spray is working very well indeed. He is clearing up nicely. It is not another flare-up after feeding that particular wet food since the switch to the Hill’s Science diet wet cat food.
Another thing to take into account with Moses, is that he has a hear murmur. It was heard from three separate vets. I took him to a heart specialist to be examined and also to get an echocardiogram in order to see what was going on with his heart and also to be cleared to see if it was safe for him to be neutered. This was when he was about five months old. Anyways, the heart specialist told me that Moses has an extra passageway where the blood flow from one side of his heart across to the other side and that it was safe for him to be neutered. At his last vet visit, his regular vet did not hear the murmur. Praise the Lord! That sweet little guy came to me with a lot of issues…round worm, worn down teeth and also ear mites. I want to do the best for both of them.

Working for Hills for so many years you would of course you side with the company that supported your salary for almost a lifetime. According to you Hills can do no wrong. How much do you suppose you earned over the years? Probably about 3 Million. But, of course, you are completely unbiased and you can't admit that Hills can be advertisement offensive. What I see in their marketing is that they always seem to have their logo and product right up front in your face when you search dog foods online. This occurs even when you specifically search another company's food. I'm beginning to see the light here. Not to say that they are not the only major corp doing this. I wonder what dog food would cost if they didn't spend so much on advertising. Someone has to pay for that expense, Oh wait, it just gets passed onto the consumer, nothing to see here.

Oh, they do lots wrong. The 2019 Vit D tragedy is inexcusable for a company like Hills. True, they’ve been making lots of diets for 75 years and this is their first major screw up, but still shouldn’t have happened. They screwed up only starting to really advertise the last few years. Their budget is a drop in the bucket compared to the others, but I bet their costs doing research and funding research is way higher than any other food company. How much did I earn? Well I started in 1988 making 30k a year. That was a lot of money for a guy who’s last real job was an airborne medic! Oh I am totally biased by my three decades plus of learning all I did. Kind of hard to not be. Every one of us is biased, just can’t let it blind us. Btw, I look at lots of websites and I noticed other food companies or Chewy show up ahead of the one I want. Hill’s have board certified veterinary nutritionists working full time to formulate diets, do feeding trials, and clinical studies on their prescriptions diets, are always involved in research. They are going above and beyond compared to the vast majority of other companies who don’t bother with any research or a basic AAFCO feeding trial. You’re paying for research mostly. But if you buy a holistic kibble or raw/fresh diet which the companies that produce them are not nearly deeply rooted in science as Hill’s is, what do you think you’re paying for other than purely marketing and advertising?

Great video! The whole DCM issue is very complex. I think it’s important to understand that some breeds (husky/malamute/Akita) are intolerant to starch but this does not necessarily mean grain free. Many grain free diets are high in starch and this is where the marketing takes a horrible turn.

Thanks for this video. I followed the DCM information and Facebook for quite a while, but it did not affect what I was doing with and feeding my multiple dogs, all rescues, so I backed off for a while. I did see what this lawyer said about his line of products, and I did feel kind of sorry for him. His line of foods was marketed as high protein at an affordable price because so much of the protein was from peas. The reports about DCM suggested pulses -- which peas are -- might be a problem. So if so, his entire line of products could be a problem. Goodbye to his investment in the ever-growing pet care supply market. Anyway, I trust the bigger companies more, for reasons you discuss. Having rescue dogs, many of which were in poor health, I was leery of new companies and new diets. And I was too busy to home cook for multiple dogs. And I wanted to feed them something their future adopters could find easily. Anyway, I did appreciate most of what you say, except I am sorry for whatever makes you believe all lawyers are leeches. I worked in the legal and judicial system for a long time, and I disagree with you about that. Anyway (again), I really suspect this lawsuit will not succeed. This guy probably should have either stayed in the field he was trained in or gotten into some business other than what he did in the way he did. Pet nutrition seems too complicated. Hi Glenn, I would like your opinion/suggestion on the following matter that "puzzles" me: As you know, I have been a big follower of yours since I found your TH-cam channel and I have really learned a lot from you. So since then, I have switched my dog and cat to Science Diet because of their well-balanced nutrient levels and all.
However, I am now confused as to know which food to give my dog. He is a 7.5 year-old Cocker Spaniel and he has been on SD Adult Perfect Digestion, Salmon, Old Oats and Brown Rice Recipe for the last year. Now, I was considering switching him to the Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Whole Oats & Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food .
Here is the thing: the difference in the nutrient levels really confuse me as to know which food is best for him. Here is what I mean:
The SD Adult Perfect Digestion, Salmon, Old Oats and Brown Rice Recipe:
    Protein     25 %
    Fat   15.5 %
    Carbohydrate / NFE      51.1 %
    Crude Fiber 2.5 %
    Calcium     0.88 %
    Phosphorus  0.73 %
The SD Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Whole Oats & Brown Rice Recipe:
    Protein     21 %
    Fat   13 %
    Carbohydrate / NFE      57.9 %
    Crude Fiber 2.2 %
    Calcium     0.92 %
    Phosphorus  0.65 %
The Adult 7+ has higher Calcium levels than the Adult line. So, shouldn't it be the opposite that is: the older the pet gets, the lower the Calcium level should be???

I am very puzzled because as I have browsed the Hill's website many times, I have found that quite a few of their mature/senior pet food have higher nutrient Calcium levels than their adult food.
So, what would you suggest I do??? Should I keep him on the Adult Perfect Digestion Salmon food or switch him anyway to the Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken food although the Calcium levels are higher???
This matter is important to me in order to give the best to my dog. I must say that my own vet, whom I have been with for 25 years, does not really care when I bring this up to her, so this is why I am turning to you.
I hope you can help me figure this out! 🐶🐾

Do you know if Hill's makes an equivelent to Royal Canin's "Ultamino"? We are just looking ahead in case the z/d doesn't square away our dog's allergic itching. Thank you, sir.

If the ZD doesn’t work in min 8 weeks, I would try RC’s HP. The molecular weight is larger than the Ultamino but has a healthier nutrient profile. Ultamino would be last choice, but still an effective one.

I’m wondering what you would do if you opened a new bag of your dogs food and they were reluctant to eat it, and/or ate it and developed vomiting with or without diarrhea? I’m not insinuating there is anything wrong with any of the brands being named as having something wrong with them. I have not taken my cats off Purina, but I’m aware of the stories. Some stories are very long shot but some are too uncanny to dismiss so I’m just being aware and alert. As a fellow person who isn’t getting all bent out of shape, I was just wondering how you would handle it? I think dogs are less picky than cats

Well, I can’t say I’ve had any long term vomiting but I’d skip a meal or two and offer small amounts. Both my dogs will get stressed and get temporary colitis but it clears up naturally in a few days sometimes with metronidazole if needed. I have never thought it was the food. I guess if prolonged I’d make sure I had a sample of the food. Hard question! Hope it never comes up!

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy I mean specifically in the mist of people questioning whether there might be a suspect ingredient from a common supplier in some of these pet foods currently, particularly in one manufacturer (but it “could” be more if it’s happens to be valid) I remain skeptical, but some of the stories to sound eerily like it could’ve been the food as opposed to a brewing illness that coincided with a new pack of food. I know a lot of recalls are done by companies way before people get sick or at most when a couple people get sick. But our pets can’t tell us how they feel. In the history of past recalls of pet foods. It’s taken mini pets to be symptomatic for a common denominator to be found, followed by a recall. So there’s always been a beginning that starts with sick pets. As our guardians, what should we do if we purchase a pack of their normal food and they go from there normal happy self to vomiting and diarrhea? That’s why I ask what you would do.
I know your address this very issue on another video. But this thought occurred to me while watching this video of yours.

Wendy, I of course would be concerned. I obsess over my girls with every little thing,. what is so weird about the stories is it is so widespread, even over countries, but so few animals vs the number fed. A common ingredient, being distributed to all those countries, seems very unlikely. And even if so, 1,000 pets vs the millions being fed Purina? and of course the people shouting the loudest have included almost every major brand. These are the same people making fraudulent claims about pet food processing, pet food ingredients, etc....meaning they have little credibility except from their almost cult like followers. Too much makes no sense.

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy yes. You are right about the numbers. I did the math based on what they have reported as far as deaths middle of January and it is .000228% of all dogs and cats owned as pets in the United States. But still, recall start somewhere, so it’s probably wise for us to always be alert to what we’re feeding and our animals responses. I agree that many of those seem like growing illnesses.

I’m not sure what’s going on with the comments. Others have stuff the same thing. I know other channels have had comments like that. Can’t imagine pet food comments get screened by TH-cam. Please try again.
