I hadn’t yet watched this video to conclusion before I commented to thank you for solving my issue. I want to add a congratulations on the new arrival in your family! She is beautiful!
Welcome to the world, Riley Ann! Adorable. Thank you so very much for tearing down the hand crank and putting it back together. You gave me the confidence to disassemble mine. They really appear to be fairly simple and something that might be within the limits of my beginner level skills. After seeing what is inside the inexpensive imported hand crank, it is now something I would also consider purchasing. The bobbin winder compatibility was great information. I had been assuming that all that was necessary was a spoked balance to make the conversion. As Thanksgiving comes nearer, it seems appropriate to give some thanks to you for so generously sharing your knowledge and experience. Thank you!
Oh - what a lovely video. Congratulations on the safe arrival on the newest member of the family too! Your viewers have some great questions. I didn't quite understand that last tool but it looks really interesting... and like if once I click about what it does I'll discover I really need (want) one. I'll have to watch it again. For me the most interesting part of the video was about the "out of phase" cam for driving the feed dogs. I didn't have the faintest clue this even was a thing. Okay - so it looks I'll be watching this a few times (like I do with all my favourite "this is really handy" videos)! :-)
Funny story about your email... My wife and I were sitting watching TH-cam videos and eating pizza when your email came in. Liz started talking to me about something when I was reading, and I was like "SHHHHHHHHHH - I'm trying to read this!" She kept talking and I have ZERO clue as to what she was saying. I got up, ran over to the shop in the next room and pulled out the cutaway machine. In a few seconds I was able to confirm my suspicions about your machine's problem and let out a rather loud WOOHOO! Liz came into the room and I started explaining what all the commotion was about and that I had figured it out. She gave me a look like 'What the Hell is wrong with you?' . I was crestfallen, and we went back to our pizza... It still felt good though! :-)
Thank you for the hand crank conversion info. The bobbin winder solution is much more straight forward than any other awkward work around I found. Though it involves finding a 66 bobbins winder, a spoked wheel and a hand crank, it looks and works great. And I'm enjoying sourcing the parts. Congrats on your new grand daughter.
Congratulations! Welcome Riley Anne! Overwhelmed with happiness for you and your family on the new addition of this tiny beauty! Thank you for the detailed information on the hand crank. So many projects, I'm excited to get back at it in the morning, if all goes well. Hope you and Liz had a great weekend!
I found that problem with the bobbin winder on the 99k, I have a hand crank version and a motor one and have swapped the hand crank to the prettier machine. I've yet to swap the winders over.... I'm going to compare what's different about the bobbin winders just out of interest!
I was tempted to make measurements and create a table comparing the two bobbin winders, and I may get around to it eventually, but suffice it to say, they are different!
It would work, but it's not necessary. A 201 series machine has timing marks on the needle bar clamp, and a gauge attached to the needle bar bushing inside the needle bar housing.
So I wired up my 201-2 and the whole thing runs in reverse - bobbin case/hook, handwheel, and feed dogs. I swapped the wires coming from the motor to terminals 2 and 3 and it didn't change anything. Could I have done something wrong when rebuilding the motor? Could it be the aftermarket "Electronic" footswitch I'm using?
No, but if you rewired the motor, I know what went wrong. Your brush holders are reversed! See my video "Oops... Sorry Sandy, Send it Back" for the explanation and how to fix it.... th-cam.com/video/qC_fK9730Bg/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BobFowler
Bob. Is there anyway you can help me. I am looking for Kenmore Model 158.12472. Zig zag gear complete. the gear part is at the top,,made in Brass,,,thanks
Rach is 22, we tend to start young and get it over with quick! Which explains how I became a grandfather at 41 and great grandfather at 63! 🤣 As for Thanksgiving, I have to work (my day job is 24/7/365, we may doze, but we never close), so Liz is cooking.
I learn something every time I watch your videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Congratulations on your great granddaughter, Riley.
Thanks Desi! Hope you're enjoying your new 99.

Thanks Megan. The timing gauge is really going to be helpful for the vintage industrial machines that don't have built in timing marks.
Thanks so much for addressing my issue-I can’t wait to tackle the problem with this new perspective!

Wow love this segment..... lots of tips, tricks and information.... might just buy a hand crank just for grims...
Thanks Jorge, great talking to you this morning!

Thanks! If all else fails and you can't find a bobbin winder, you can always use a stand alone unit.

Thanks Alyssa, It's hard to describe how I feel about having a great grand. I'm absolutely over the moon...
Loved this informative video and I LOVE my screwdriver! Thanks guys!
Thanks Pattie! Love ya!
So happy for your new little girl in your life. Precious. Happy Thanksgiving!
Another great video.
Thanks Robin!

OMG!!! Congratulations!!! :) SO cool!!! Thank you, too, for sharing all your knowledge and the help you give so many!!!
Thanks Sam!
Great video bob! Does the timing tool work on all machines? I need to time a 201
It would work, but it's not necessary. A 201 series machine has timing marks on the needle bar clamp, and a gauge attached to the needle bar bushing inside the needle bar housing.
Yay! This is so much fun. I have learned sooooo much from you already!
I'm so glad!
for the bobbin winder in the hand crank conversion could you not source a larger outside diameter rubber "dough-nut" to replace the original one?
I suppose that's possible, but I haven't seen one.
congratulations!
Thanks! I am completely over the moon!

Bob the gear number is 39453,,,,thanks.
I'll look through my parts machines, I know I don't have one in my parts bin.
The grandchild looks very young.....but she's done a great job making babies. I'm glad for you. Are you cooking this Thanksgiving?
