    Ariel isn't the only villain winner. I would consider Michael from season 1 to be a villain mostly because of his strategic play and intentionally sabotaging other contestants. Especially compared to Ralph who was being portrayed as the hero all season

    • @Morayyeel64
      @Morayyeel64 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      I’m surprised Michael being a villain isn’t brought up more. Maybe because it’s season 1? I do know for a fact that with Ralph and Michael, I was rooting for Ralph because I saw Michael as conniving. Was I disappointed that Michael won? Not really, I expected it, but didn’t change the fact that I was rooting for Ralph.

    • @heymistercarter.
      @heymistercarter. ปีที่แล้ว +72

      @@babyt556 I guess it’s because Ariel was rarely, if ever, portrayed positively as a person. She was shown to be a talented chef, but she was mostly shown getting in fights with her competitors and making shady remarks in the confessionals. And in certain crucial story-telling moments, like when she nominated Vanessa for elimination over Manda, she was almost edited to have betrayed the team by going against their choices, like she was in the wrong by doing that. So in a way, she got a sort of villain edit.

    • @shadowskulljohnson
      @shadowskulljohnson ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@heymistercarter. that’s true, but you also have to consider how Ariel throughout the season without the edits looked. Most likely, she was a outspoken and talented chef that wouldn’t sway or change her opinion because of others.
      It was also very likely the editing team understood that they would need a late stage villain for the show so they took one of the black jackets that talked the most out of everyone and choose which clips should go where to have a villain portrayal.

    Holli Is the prime definition of a silent protagonist. You look at her and think "simple, basic, not all the way there, and quiet" but re-watching the season Holli is a beast. She barely messed up AT ALL. Hell I think she only got yelled at once for not running up to the pass ahead of her team. She was on the worst red team in Hell's Kitchen history and yet she didn't let that get her down. She barely bitched or whined like a baby, she took it and just focused on her future. All of those punishments SHE had to endure and none of it was even her fault. I'm glad she won and I'm even more glad she's doing well in life in general.

      Her brigades ruin her.
      She got Lauren the dumb blonde who got caught walking around doing nothing and Amber the spoiled whiny rich kid who ruined her fish or chicken (I don't remember which one) many times until Mary Lou has to switch her with Cody and also Amber whined to Kori for not picking her as her teammate instead of Jordan like a kid who complained to their parents if they didn't get her toys.
      Same happened with Paula who lost to Danny on Season 5 because she got lazy Lacey who ruin everything by being whiny crybaby.
      Meanwhile, Paul can somehow manage Elise and Carrie who don't like each other work together on his team which is absolutely a miracle.

I thought time and time again, Ariel had the right to be annoyed. That clip you showed of Ariel yelling at Dannie is unfair because later on the same thing happened again between Dannie and Hassan -- the problem was CLEARLY Dannie's attitude. That, to me, seems to be the most objective way in determining whether or not Gordon Ramsey made the right call in hindsight. For example, Christina was definitely the right choice over Petrozza as she went on to become one of the most successful chef's in Hell's Kitchen history. Gordon wanted new blood Megan proved to him already that she is head chef material. Alex was head and shoulders above the other competition.

    Holli winning is just further proof they make decisions based on what will make the audiences happy or make it interesting instead of what the best choices are. She was never a leader or executive chef material at any point throughout the show. It was a safe choice for TV ratings which was what made her win.
    Kori was not the wrong choice, despite being a boring personality, but it was just a season full of middling chefs in general.
    Ariel deserved to win in comparison to her final competition, but there were other contestants eliminated earlier on that showed more potential and better leadership that should have stayed, which is what makes her win the most disappointing while being a villainous personality as it would not have happened otherwise since she hit a ceiling so early on. Unlike Russell, who was a prick and would have been a winner that made everyone angry, but had flat-out no better chefs than him that season. Even with that disappointing final round.
    Paul winning over Will is another thing proven about this show. Which is that they want to make interesting storylines by pretending like Will has hit a ceiling and is a great chef but not executive chef material while Paul grew to the same level with more room from there and more leadership qualities. Despite the exact opposite being the case. Will was just flawless throughout almost the entire show and was still improving while having leadership qualities. They do this a lot with older chefs as well. They also only do this so the finale part would actually feel like something super important where, no matter how you performed throughout the rest of the show, you could make it up there and get the win.
    There is no way in hell this should have ever happened though. Petrozza was amazing throughout the entire show, kept improving, never hit a ceiling, and showed the most leadership qualities. Literally the only reason he lost was because of his age.

      My heart also breaks when I see Steve is suddenly going quiet and I got a PTSD of Adam being too quiet on garnish station and got eliminated on same night and he as part of Black Jacket curse got eliminated first in Black Jacket rounds. I honestly can't stand Megan the most because she talks like either a typical Valley Girl or a Kardashian at the same time and she's too nice and chill even in final and Christina has to tell her to stop being nice. But, I also didn't expect Kiya would be in 3rd place either because she's been strong and never been in bottom only to breakdown on Sabotage in Black Jacket round.

    TBH Ariel wasn't that surprising to me. Earlier in the season when she gave her nomination over the team's nomination, no one corrected her in front of chef. That chef was eliminated, too, so her and Ramsay were on the same page. That gave me the impression that she had the type of executive chef personality Ramsay was looking for at the time. (Even if she didn't keep the job cause she was too mean lol)

    I disagree I think Kori had a huge presence on the red kitchen often being called the mama of the team. I knew from the beginning she had it in the bag and I loved her sportsmanship. She even brought back Declan and Mary Lou gifts when she won the shopping spree.
    Edit: I did love Mary Lou as well. She was amazing and I loved her personality. She was such a good sport.

      I hate knowing who already won season 21 thanks to Netflix leaking episodes in the Philippines in December 2022 for a brief time and some clown not spoiler proofing their comment, but without spoiling it, the contestants we got in the final five are probably the best final five by quality matched with quantity. Had Nikki been a black jacket in season 19, I would have ranked them slightly above season 21's final five.
      Now down to the final three, they really are some of the best-of-the-best and if I didn't know who won, I wouldn't be bummed at all if it wasn't the contestant I've been rooting for. I'm so excited to watch the finale, then read everyone's thoughts on it. The wait has been the painful part of knowing lol

    What I find even more fascinating is every season you have chefs who should be eliminated but seem to keep squeaking by week after week because someone else was even worse that week vs the chefs who should have gotten black jackets but make one mistake on the week no one else did. So many of these shows (not only Hell's Kitchen) should base wins and eliminations on consistency when they make the final cuts to the final few.

    what i like about these finales, aside from the occasional saltiness (hello russell), is that the runner-ups are usually nice about their defeat. sure, they may be disappointed that they didn't win, but they usually say nice things about the winner & display their confidence that they'll find job opportunities in the future, which can show good sportsmanship

    spoilers for s21 hk
    hopefully i went far enough. the most recent season of hk is battle of the ages so 20s v 40s. Knowing that Ramsey typically goes for younger chefs, rather than older, having Kori be the oldest winner so far, i am incredibly scared for Alex. He clearly proved himself as the best chef of season 21. He beat out all the other older chefs very early in the season, the latest being Tara. His leadership skills are better than most and respectfully he had a few mess ups here and there, but he managed to bounce back quickly, where it wasnt a problem. Having knowledge of how hk works, basically knowing the 'script' , its going to be him v one of the young folks, my prediction is Alejandro. Alex had a heart warming backstory, having his restruant close bc of covid. None of the other chefs have that. So here, im praying and HOPING Ramsey doesnt screw him over in the end because Alex deserves the win more than anyone. Age shouldnt define a chef. I understand Ramsey's point, but having seen Ben from S17 and Petrozza from S4, older chefs are more than capable than doing what younger chefs can do.

    Ramsay made it clear over the seasons that he tends to prefer younger contestants who have good growth. He also seems to be somewhat biased towards those with a good palette (Nona, Virginia, Bonnie, etc). So most of these didn't surprise me. However, I did think he made the wrong choice with Holli and Christina.
