    As a developer at Sensible we managed for the most part to escape the ST to Amiga coding route. Phew! It's so refreshing seeing new stuff coming out that takes advantage of the Amiga hardware - and what superb hardware it is too! Great Video as always mate!

    Wow, MVG... thank you ever so much for reviewing my games and the boxes, I'm so pleased you like them! As usual a fantastic video and of course your technical decision points about the Amiga are absolutely spot on. I'm considering doing a shooter next or Hyper Sports which is one of my favourite arcade sports games that I remember back in the day. Excellent job on the games, professional quality across the board! I'm curious though, as I'm assuming that Rygar includes all of its hidden items throughout, how did you go about determining where those were? Did you have to parse through the original source code?

      Question: I'm assuming this is done above-board, so I'm curious how you acquired permission to do these re-releases? Were the original publishers down with it?

    It's really pleasing to see what these machines were capable of, especially the OCS machines, not necessarily that much weaker but the color depth could make ports a challenge. Apparently the whole "ported to a weaker system, then to another micro" hampered the MSX too, with several ports from the *Spectrum* of all things.

    Amiga had a few really good arcade conversions. Toki, Super Off Road ("can you feel it angels?"), Pang, New Zealand Story, Rodland & Rainbow Islands. All of them quality ports. Silkworm was one of the few games that actually improved on Amiga, upping the resolution from 256x240 to 320x200 made it feel so much better than the original. If you never played the arcade, try it in MAME, you will recoil in horror and appreciate the extra horizontal resolution.

    I never really had access to Amigas growing up, but I remember the one time I got to use them. I saw one in a computer store that was running Lemmings and I was blown away by the graphics and even more so by the sound. I was used to MS-DOS PCs (and PCs without sound cards) and this was so far above and beyond anything I had experienced.

    I just want to make one comment, I continue to support MVG, and many others because they DO NOT take a political stand in their videos. The moment you start to take a stance you lose me, if I wanted commentary I would check out channels that specialize in that. I come to TH-cam and watch content to get away from the back and forth of the current political environment, while I am on one side of the fence, I do not want to hear opinions on the other side. I guess that's easier than original coding but amazing how often that happened, whether ST to Amiga, ZX to CPC, or Jaguar games that ignore Tom & Jerry chips entirely. Schedules and budgeting aside but how could anyone not want to dive into a hardware platform completely when you have something as cool as the Amiga ijs? :\
    That Rygar port is so beautiful and awesome I just want to buy a physical copy to honor it despite not having an AGA machine. :D Sprint is pretty sweet with the hi-res, that engine could do The Incredible Machine or Lode Runner:TLR too. Definitely could warrant a purchase of DT with OCS support, so GG should likely make more copies of that one.
    Speaking of Amiga controller support and people looking to develop games for Amiga, ignore the original controllers and go straight to the actual joystick pinout specs for the platform. The past had it's "reasons" for no Button-2 or more but it's all adapters, third party controllers, and 3D printing now so use more buttons please.

      @oldguy9051 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It may surprise you but there actually weren't that many homecomputers with hardware sprites.
      Apart from the Amiga there basically only were
      - the TI 99/4a - and all machines that used the same TI graphics chip (TI happily sold it to others) -> MSX, Memotech, early Spectravideo SVI-series, Tatung Einstein and others
      - the Atari 400/800 and later 8-bit machines using Atari custom chips (same main chip designer as the Amiga: Jay Miner)
      - the C64, which was a major step up from the earlier machines (nearly half of the video chip was sprite hardware)
      - and the various MSX generations: MSX (using the TMS9918 graphics chip from TI), MSX2 (using the improved Yamaha V9938), MSX2+ and MSX turboR (using the even better Yamaha V9958) - the latter two only being marketed in Japan, AFAIK
      - the Sharp X68000 which was more of a cross between a graphics workstation and the best console available in Japan at the time (for a hefty price)
      - and the Fujitsu FM Towns, an early proprietary 386-based PC with a custom graphics chip by Fujitsu - also only marketed in Japan
      But many popular home computers didn't have sprite hardware (excluding non-color & more exotic machines):
      - the Apple II family was too old to have sprites (and had a different design philosphy anyway)
      - the VIC 20: they simply weren't as sophisticated with their first color computer, according to chip designer Al Charpentier - but they learned quickly...
      - the Tandy CoCo family (price reasons? the first two models used a rather simple Motorola standard off-the-shelf video controller without sprites)
      - the British Dragon-family (a CoCo "clone")
      - the Sinclair Spectrum: Sir Clive sold the cheapest, most primitive platform he could get away with (with shitty sound hardware, no less!)
      - the Amstrad CPC-family, used their own custom "ULA" chip w/o sprites but at least a decent off-the-shelf sound chip (and a decent keyboard)
      - the Atari ST, which used a blitter, too
      Yet many of those machines had more or less decent arcade ports - even if it meant to compromise on things.

    Very interesting, I was brought up coding Z80, 6502 and 68k , graduating in 1997 on real time systems. There is very much a place for me where I would still love to write and make games for the Amiga, seeing videos like this really helps me in that its not only something that I should do, but would really enjoy the Amiga renaissance and contributing to it. Whilst I would love to use a physical Amiga (the A1200 was my favourite!) would the UAE be a realstic place to start coding Assembler again ?? Am going to do some digging and see what I come up with but would love to hear comments/input.

    The Amiga reminds me somewhat of the Atari Jaguar as far as ports. So many ports on the Jaguar never took advantage of the hardware. 😢

      Same problem with the Saturn as well, they were very complex designs and neither company put enough effort into making sure to provide a good development environment to help programmers take full advantage of the hardware capabilities. Sega learned their lesson and the dev tools they provided for the Dreamcast were WAY better. Atari, of course, never had the chance to learn anything because the Jaguar was pretty much the last gasp for the company.

    I'm curious; These are ports from original arcade games, does Geezer Games needed to sign a deal with the original developers to sell physical copies?

    Not just arcade conversions, but any games based on licensing of any kind including movies, conversions from other platforms, etc. One reason was the crazy short development times the companies gave the coders. This drove away some of the good coders from such companies so they could work on the projects they liked and take the time they needed to get the results they wanted. It was the same on the 8-bit platforms.

    I talked some buddies into going across town to a 7-11 which I knew had a SuperSprint and we each brought a $10 roll of quarters and had an epic Grand Prix, the 7-11 people were amused when we hung around there for an hour straight (plus Big Gulps and Slurpees).
    Have you checked out the amazing ARLASOFT library of arcade conversions? 24 (that's TWENTY-FOUR) C64 games written between Oct 2019 and Jan 2022. Including Donkey Kong Jr, Galaga, and Galaxian.

    This is amazing!! I always dreamed of playing an arcade "good" version of Rygar! Sadly I don't have an Amiga, in my country is imposible, but I do have a SNES and other retro consoles. I always wonder why is that Sega Genesis and even niche old computers like the Amiga receive this wonderful new ports and yet the SNES does not get any love?? I think it about time the SNES get some love to. I would love to see a Rygar arcade faithful version on the SNES using the unique and amazing sound capabilities of the SNES!! And the same for any port on the SNES! And you have so many options like fastROM or even the FXChip. Honestly SNES should be the new homebrew king.

    I always loved the Amiga but couldn't afford one as a kid. I'm a huge arcade fan and now I'm enjoying the Amiga and this video is right up my alley. There are also some awesome recent arcade ports on the Megadrive like Paperboy, Double Dragon and Gauntlet. I didn't realise until recently that the Vigilante arcade game was a sequel of sorts to Kung fu master and Devils Temple looks very much in the same visual style as Vigilante. Cheers from New Zealand!

    What was the reason for Amiga arcade ports being ported from the ST?

    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen ปีที่แล้ว

      Software houses (especially Ocean) would code for the weaker platform, then port the game over. Having optimised Amiga conversions would have been more expensive as they would either need to develop Amiga and atari St versions in parallel, or take additional time to downgrade the Amiga version to meet the atari St hardware. Both options would have had an impact on the release date. Also there weren't many coders able to work with Amiga custom chips back then.

    Thank you for the video! Very cool that new, good games and finally faithful arcade conversions are still being produced for the Amiga. Especially the newer arcade conversions help heal still open emotional wounds for me after more than 30 years and are an important salvation of honour for the Amiga. Now we can finally say to our friends from back then, who smiled at us with their Sega MegaDrive, PC Engine or Super NES consoles because of the embarrassing Amiga arcade ports: "In your face! We always told you that the Amiga could easily do something like that!" ;-)
    Regarding Rygar: Looks great! And impressive that the FM-like sound turned out so well on the good old Paula sound chip. BUT: I think this faithful Rygar port would also have been possible on OCS/ECS, at least with a memory expansion. Games like Turrican 2, Shadow of the Beast or Lionheart ran without any problems on OCS/ECS. And they were faster and more colourful than Rygar. But it was certainly much more comfortable to convert Rygar to AGA.

    • @dlfrsilver
      @dlfrsilver ปีที่แล้ว

      Rygar is way too demanding for OCS/ECS. otherwise we would have made it also on A500.

    • @marmeladenfreund
      @marmeladenfreund ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dlfrsilver Please don't get me wrong. It really is a great arcade conversion that is very close to the original. And it was undoubtedly for good reasons that you programmed it on AGA. Still, I'd be very interested to know what aspects of it are so hardware demanding that OCS can't handle it.
      Is the impressively faithful reproduction of FM music the reason? Because it doesn't sound Amiga-like at all, since it's not the usual tinny, lo-fi sample sound that we know from so many games. Perhaps the rear parallax scrolling layer is also too memory-intensive? I'm just curious.
      Otherwise, as already mentioned, there are some similar games on OCS that have more colours, more sprites/BOBs, faster scrolling and larger levels (e.g. Turrican 2, Lionheart, Shadow of the Beast). Of course, the OCS Amiga's bag of tricks was used heavily to achieve this (especially copper and blitter effects).

    • @dlfrsilver
      @dlfrsilver ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marmeladenfreund Hello, i'm not the programmer of Rygar. Rygar was coded by McGeezer. I did the GFX reverse engineering. Ok : The A500 has not enough memory chip, you can't do with it games with 64 colors palette at 50fps with 20 or more sprites on screen and a good screen size, and you can't have the parallax since the 500 can only do 8+8 colors. You can't compare a game with a real 64 colors palette with a game using 16 colors + copper raster like brian the lion, turrican 2, Lionheart or shadow of the beast. McGeezer knows very well the Amiga, and in order to get the most faithfull version of Rygar, the A1200 was the only way.

The latter 2 are excellent ports that expand gameplay vertically into the top and bottom borders, and the first 2 are amazing technical achievements.

    I love the idea of physical boxed games for any system in 2022.. But unfortunately for me to own all 4 games and have them delivered to me here in Australia would cost $337 AU($226 US)plus $58 AU($39 US) for shipping. . That's literally half the price I paid for my A1200. I understand what the reason is behind making physical games, but something must be done about the cost. Aside from that the games look absolutely excellent.

    • @GeezerGamesRetro
      @GeezerGamesRetro ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, I totally understand this. Shipping from the UK to AUS is classed as World Zone 3 and is the most expensive options for shipping. What I've done on my site is include a cheaper DIY floppy option whereby if you know how to write the ADF's to floppy yourself then you can just do that and put on the supplied labels. Feel free to drop me an email and maybe I can help out further with costs.
