After many days of doing huge kicks and burning alot of energy i started to do this today and really used less energy and got further. Thanks for the great advice.
that straighteningh while downkick and kinda relaxing during the up kick advide is actually awesome :) also relaxing the ankles, my coach isn't too into details apparently lol. i'm used to pilates which requires very precise and slight movements/adjustments so i'm into this haha. thanks!
+Nath Jiménez Same for me! Just began taking swim lessons, and the trainers at my pool are not much into details. I have to come back and watch videos on TH-cam in order to know whats the exact thing I should be doing. I too have been into Pilates for the last 4 years, and more comfortable with the kinda instructions they provide there...
I have trouble trying to keep my legs straight, and toes pointed. The most that fustrates me is breathing. I know I'm supposed to blow from my nose underwater, but I just can't do it. Swimming is really hard for me.
Most people says you only get 5-15% propulsion from your kick but in my case i can get about 30% propulsion at a good pace. I can easily compete with my co-swimmer just by kicking!
As a US Masters Swimmer I don't agree with the opening statement "the stronger your legs the more propulsion you will achieve, increasing the speed at which you are able to swim." Legs move vertically (up and down), not horizontally. In the freestyle, leg movement's sole purpose is to keep the body upright in order to reduce drag. Strong shoulders and long, smooth arm strokes are the 2 drivers of propulsion and speed.
Disappointed with this. I tend to do one leg kick while one arm pulling. I wanted to learn how to do it correctly. It doesnt show how fast do you have to kick, or what kind of rhythm to do regards timing with arms. This video shows too much arm action and upper body swimming while the legs arent even in the picture.
+Finn O'Mara completely depends, you will see even olympic swimmers on 800m+ distances barely moving the legs and only use them to keep the body positioned while 50m races have people kick like a shark is trying to eat them. but in general for timing, when your shoulder goes up, the opposite leg kicks down. how many you do inbetween is up to you
Finn O'Mara Start by using kickboards and try doing 3 kicks for 1 stroke. As far as rhythm goes, depends on what you're trying to practice. Kickboard with hands drills are all available on TH-cam. It all depends on your own rhythm and pace. Do it slow and relaxed at first. Most importantly, please try to enjoy your swimming practice and don't forget to tuck uour tummy in.
I think it's no wonder it's so difficult to find a video that actually explains kicking--the truth is almost no swimmers understand what's going on. I think this video is wrong when he says you get power, but "less" power, from the up-kick. I don't think that's right. The up-kick is the "recovery" phase of the stroke. You are pushing with the down stroke, recovering with the upstroke.
+greg55666 It is right. As was stated, power from the kick - up and down - must come from the hips. Legs are constantly working hard from the hips! If one is not in decent shape, this may be difficult to do right.
+Rich Messi You can't be getting power in 100% of the stroke. It is physically impossible, it would be basically a perpetual machine. Every stroke, every kick, has a propulsive part and a non-propulsive part, and the goal with every element is to minimize the drag on the recovery and maximize the propulsion with the pull/kick. You can't be pushing yourself forward both up and down.
greg55666 No you can't - but you can 'generate' 100% power from your 'body'. That's what he is saying in the video; your 'body generates' more power in the down-kick. Yes - the up-kick can act like a recovery, but an active one from the hips. Ok?
+Rich Messi Not okay, I don't understand what you say here. (up-kick "acts like" a recovery? No, it is the recovery, right?) An "active recovery"--what does that mean?
+momen osama . Haha! That's not the point! A freestyle demo should be technically spot on in all areas! I dont need the videos they are for my clients . Im a swim coach and competed for the county but thank you anyway :)

Can you guys please make videos like this for Flip turning and Starts? :))
These videos explain the techniques well n precise. Thanks!
Great upload thank u
Just what I was looking for as I go swimming 3x a week, needed something like this upload to better myself :)
this is a awesome video because explains clearly the correct technique, thanks
really thank you for all the video you upload good quality very clear ... keep doing that
We need the turn tutorial speedo!
Thanjs for it helped my out a lot. Now im faster at freestyle kick! Im 9

That's good but what about timing , or lets say rhythm ?
Thanks speedo
❤ these vids
I’ve just gotten into swimming & I’ve been doing my laps with a 1:1 ratio of kick to paddle😂 what does the ideal ratio look like?
Good video. It answered very specific questions I had. Thank you!
awesome advice!
Guys, focus on what he said, kicks should be coming from hips and not knee, this is very very important to protect your knee meniscus and cartilages.
Thumbs up. It helps me alot
I have trouble trying to keep my legs straight, and toes pointed. The most that fustrates me is breathing. I know I'm supposed to blow from my nose underwater, but I just can't do it. Swimming is really hard for me.
Well i breathe through my nose and out my mouth
Are you a whale? When I try it, breathing through nose gets water in.
Thank you! Great explanation
helpful, thanks

I can't pronounce your last name. Is it Blowhard?
+Kim Probable hahahahahhhahahahhahahha
good to know. now fuck off
yeah, same
Ricky Aponte *about* 30%
Thanks Speedo 😄
which is it...propel from the hip or the knee????
hip
Propel from the hip, except when your leg moves upward, the knee slightly bends

As a US Lord Grand Master Wizard Swimmer I agree with the statement
@@benjaminaasa What's a "US Lord Grand Master Wizard Swimmer" title? That's hilarious!
Yes i agree with you
How in the world do you get your feet to go that straight?! My ankle wont straighten more than 45 degrees or so, and even that HURTS!
you are awesome thx for these tuts
Thanks speedo, I really needed this because I was always wondering why everyone passes me during freestyle kick in practice. Ime just 9
Same here, getting ready to head to practice in an hour, lets see if the difference is notable ^_^, can't wait to move out of last place for kick lol
Yess I’m moving up in a year round swim team and I was the slowest kicker ever from the developmental team 😔😔 at least now I’m like the third slowest
Same. Except everyone passes me while swimming
Remember these from swim team days. God I miss it
Thank you/
-laughs- I can't swim.

+Finn O'Mara and also how far should you kick..and I kick my other foot sometimes.

i cannot move in water give me tips please
Um... because you didn't move your arms and legs?
thanks guys for showing this video lol
2019
watched.
Nice, but the guy is making a windmill with his arms.
Pharoah King of Plot Armor what's that?
Pharoah King of Plot Armor really ? My coach told me that windmill arms are better when it comes to sprinting freestyle.
Kicks should come from your hips not knees, thereby letting the calves to get lighter in weight. Nice one
I can pull a 100 in 1:10 seconds but to kick a 100 it takes me 2:10 seconds.
What do you mean but? That's pretty darn good for just kicking on a 100. Probably why you're able to go 1:10 in the 100 in the first place
This hurts just looking at it

greg55666 Nobody is doubting the up kick is a recovery phase. The 'power' mentioned in video is to do with body mechanics, not propulsion.
:| This is useful
I will try this this week and come back to report.
Well? 7 months have passed by
his arm technique is pretty awful?! is this really from Speedo?
Well it only said kick not stroke
If you want to see stroke the video is beside it in the playlist

+Foxy807 same here. I won five gold medals in 2012.
