    Three things may help you:
    1. Point your toes so that you feet become as flat as possible giving you a bigger surface area for propulsion (like fins).
    2. Keep your heels under the water. When you heels break the surface, you introduce air bubbles which causes you to lose leverage.
    3. Kick from your hips and not your knees; this will increase the surface area (your quads are wider than your shins).
    Please give these a try and let me know if you notice a difference in your speed & endurance

    Your legs consume the greatest amount of oxygen in your body, so when you use them your oxygen uptake will be crazy fast. To help you "move" in the water, make sure that you are kicking from the hips and keeping your ankles under the water. Please let me know how you progress in the water!

    Its been five days since my swimming class (I'm 22) and my kick sucks (literally). The coach shifted me to the kickboard today and I really couldn't kick much when he wasn't supporting me. The video was VERY helpful because I realised three things:
    1. The best way to keep shoulders relaxed (another problem area) is to press down with your pits
    2. The death-grip on the board was SO wrong on my part
    3. Keeping knees straight, ankles in water and engaging hips while kicking is the way to move ahead

    Thanks for the very informative video, i am a mature and a beginner in swimming. I am taking swimming lessons at my local pool and just getting confident in water. I am learning how to breath under water but when i lift my head out of water to take a breathe my legs go down, i also use kickboard. I am learning a lot from your wonderful videos besides my lessons. so please keep postiing and keep up the good work. Many thanks once again.

    I recently 7/20/12 had foot surgery. Not reconstructive but nerve related. My doc said I can swim now and since walking is still difficult, (swollen arch) I have decided to start swimming. Bought a kick board and watched this video. I had no idea there was a right and wrong way to use one. This video is now in my favorites, THANKS for making it! Focus on your oral instruction, no music. Slow down your speaking rate to 100 words per minute or 90 words per minute. Take the pause. You will ten times your income. Congratulations. Hey Robb; just to give you a hint with my kick board swimming issue, my swim instructor said that I am moving my legs too fast. That's one of my problems. MY GOD I think this the 20 time I watch this video, but is good because you the only one that explain the use of the kick board so perfect that I can understand it.

    • @CoachRobbBeams
      @CoachRobbBeams  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only way you an kick "too fast" is if you are ineffecient. Visualize your feet as flippers and focus on making them act accordingly. Please keep me posted.

  • @CoachRobbBeams
    @CoachRobbBeams  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once you capture your air, slowly exhale through your next stroke striving to "empty" your lungs of air. By focusing on depleting the air in your lungs, you are actually "pushing" air out of your mouth which will help keep the water from coming in. Honestly, you will never keep 100% of the water out; however, this will help. If water does get into your mouth, try to relax and spit the water out verses trying to swallow it. You will become more familar with this. Keep up the good work!
    Coach

      Fort Worth Peg,
      Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. When you get a moment, please email me and let me know what kind of pain you are experiencing in both your ankle and your shoulder. My experience has been that a lack of flexibility and strength are the key components to joint pain. I would love to help.

    • @peggerrity
      @peggerrity 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks coach Robb. My doc says shoulder is only a sprain in the rotator cuff so it just needs a little time to heal and then I'll be doing strengthening exercises with the PT. The ankles are the big issue and have been aching for about 2 years. I have multiple tears in the ligaments and tendons medially, laterally, and dorsally on both ankles according to the MRI I had this week. So it's new orthotics, stretching, and low impact exercising for 3 - 6 months. Once the symptoms are gone we'll start strength training. It sucks getting old!

Hopefully I will decrease my IM time on the swim. (But the ankle story I can comply with, also never heard before, thanks)

    This was incredibly helpful. I did swimming lessons when I was younger and then let it go, but kept some of the techniques with me and now as I returned to swimming I tried to get those back. One myth that I thought about was that you had to have your ankles rise above the water as you're kicking and as Coach Robb just mentioned, it's just the opposite, so next time I hit the pool I'll have that in mind and not put such a strain on my back and myself as getting your feet to raise above the water takes some effort and may not be as useful as I thought. Thanks Coach!

    Thank you for providing this video. I had a near fatal car wreck which destroyed my right ankle, fractured my tibia/fibia both laterally as well as vertically through the length of the bones and fractured my kneecap into 9 pieces. I had to take my physical therapy into my own hands and bought a Swimex swim-in-place therapy pool and designed my own rehab program. I really wasn't sure why I decided I needed a kick board, but was drawn to it. This video explains exactly why I was correct in my thinking. I have severe muscle atrophy through my extensor mechanism and I can feel already how using this apparatus is improving the muscle quality and strength. I will definitely be checking out your other videos. Thanks so much again !

      Olga-thank you for your comment! I would recommend that you take your kicking sets in increments. Start with long fins - then short fins - go to no fins. Strive to kick from your hips to build your strength faster. Please keep me posted if you have any questions or need anything clarified.

    I would suggest that you stand waist deep in the water and practice squatting until your head goes under the water and then stand back up. Practice "timing" when to start blowing out (as soon as your mouth enters the water) and when to end blowing (as soon as your mouth clears the water line. The idea here is to create confidence that you will not inhale water. Please keep me posted if this works for you.

      +Robb Beams thanks Robb really appreciate it, going to sub to your channel and check out your videos.. I'm doing my first sportive cycle event in July.. cycling has enabled me to get back into running and I'm slowly building my miles back up, a few years back I did a few off road half marathons and a marathon, mostly as additional exercise to my jiu jitsu/martial arts training I was doing at the time.. I found the running really enjoyable in it's own rite however the long runs etc tended to eat into my recovery from my main training so had to back it off in the end..
      I've had a couple of years off of my jiu jitsu/martial arts training and using running/cycling as my main form of exercise but also looking to develop my swimming..
      your channel looks great thanks for spending the time to make such informative videos!

    hi coach, sorry cz of my poor English knowledge I couldn't understand 1st, what you said in the video. after 2 and 3 times playing the video I undestood the points and tried it in the classes. and I was succeeded. I'm pressing my armpits and its easy to kick that way. now my coache taught me to breath in while leg kicking and arm strokes. but i stopp kicking when I bring my head outside the water to breath. so I'm going to go through your rest of the videos and work on it. Thanks a lot 4 reply.

    Hi coach, its me again. since last 7-8 days i have practicing hard with the float on my back. i used to keep my head over the water all the time. This really consumed a lot of my energy. also, the moment i took the float out, i sank in the water. today, i did what you have told. i buried my head under water and took breath sideways after every 3 strokes and i find it very useful. my body position was straight, legs were coming up and exhaustion level was low. ..cont....(2)

    great video!
    this is why i stopped taking swim lessons as a kid, cause all our swim teacher was doing was make us grab a kick board the minute we stepped into the pool and make us pedal like crazy. and i never felt the board was helping me in any way.
    now i understand why! wasn't using the kick board correctly at all, and the teacher didn't explain any of what u do here.

    Not sure if this hurting or helping, but what I do to help keep my hips up is use the kickboard almost as a diving rudder. I'll point the tip of it down creating that downward drag which helps keep my lower torso up. This also acts as a breathing trainer for me was I will bring the point up to help surface my upper half while also turning on my side. Any feedback would be great! Thanks for the vids.

  • @CoachRobbBeams

    This is a great tip! I like it for the reasons that you mention, plus it makes your core muscles work to rotate to breathe and maintain a "tall" position in the water. To make this a challenge for you, breathe every 3rd or 5th stroke - this will help you get the timing of your breathing down. Please keep me posted on what you think!
