Hmm, that’s a difficult one … I’ll make a video on this at some stage. I don’t encourage 2.5 hitch kicks, mainly as you need to jump over 7.50m to be able to complete one properly IMO if you’re male. I have had a number of guys well over 7.60m and in most cases their technique has been robust enough to not need an extra hitch rotation for example. When done well a 2.5 hitch takes up much airtime. You’ll see elite jumpers pivoting sideways and struggling to get their legs into position. It can of course be done but if you don’t get enough air time then there will be compromises. I don’t like spring boards or elevated jumps but using these is probably needed for those doing the 2.5 hitch. They’ll buy the airtime needed and therefore the jumper can create the necessary preceding rotations and landing extension. If you look at double hitch kickers closely you’ll see some cheats to get the landing. A short first hitch being one, single arm actions with two leg cycles… being another. Note this may not be intentional. The more I’ve looked at landing (regardless of technique) the more I see issues. I’m coming around to the viewpoint that there are very few perfect landings and indeed landing mechanics can be misunderstood and incorrectly coached. Having said that there are areas that can be worked on to improve landing mechanics and importantly awareness (most start at take-off!). You can’t switch off when nearing the sand. There are movements that can be made to extend/improve and control better landing. Double hitch-kickers can use a hurdle type movement of the following into landing leg to clear the sand. You’re much more reliant too on the rotations “making” the landing for you with the 2.5 hitch. However, as indicated there are things that you can do to improve its landing.
I've been doing long jump and Tripple jump for 2 years now and have been jumped with my left leg since it always felt more natural but recently I've been going to the gym and have realized my right one is stronger, I can leg press more should I switch feet?
You’ll need to consider whether you are just stronger on that leg against whether you are more powerful/elastic on the other leg. Having more “weights strength ability” in one leg does not mean you will jump further from it. A better test would be to see whether you can hop as well from it or long jump as well from it. (You’d need to turn the greater base strength in that leg to greater power/elasticity.) Now, there’s also going to be the coordinatory aspects and whether you can make the right jump specific movements from the leg. Noting that you are a triple jumper and long jumper it’s possible that this will be easier for you to do than if you were a long jumper. So, experiment and see what you can do, noting that it may take a bit of time to work out which is actually your dominant leg. Hope this helps and thanks for the question.

Good video, Coach. As you may already know, I’ve been using a chair drill for many years. I had never thought about placing a mound of sand in the pit, though. That’s a good idea. Much better than placing a hard object (like a hurdle) in the pit, the way we did it when I was jumping 40 years ago. And… As you emphasized, no landing can correct for faulty takeoff mechanics/positions. All the leg lifts and sit-ups in the world will not reverse over-rotation. The end in defined by the beginning. Thanks for emphasizing that point. Cheers!💪🏾
Many thanks. I do wince a bit of I see a hard object put in the pit to improve take-off or landing. There are safer and more effective methods. Thanks for passing by and commenting and all the best with your coaching.
How do you practice landing using the double hitch kick, since you have a single leg shoot at the landing and the other leg follows before landing
