When I was active with the SCA we used to do a Fool's Feast in April. Most attendees made historical patterned clothes, but with wacky fabrics. This dress would be perfect for something like that if they get involved with the SCA out there as well. Also. Wear it EVERYWHERE, lol.

When you walked out that door with the black dress and transitioning to the colorful, it looked like the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy entered into Oz the first time.

I love this dress, but I think even more than that, I love seeing your personality come out more, as you share with us how you go back and forth with decisions, ideas, and creativity. It's much more helpful to see if of the chaos that happens when you create something, as opposed to a pretty how-to video. But also? RAINBOW LEOPARD LISA FRANK DRESS!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Its also very realistic and relatable. Everyone has moments like this when working on a project. I am glad she kept the "maybe i like it better this way... or maybe that way?"-moments in.
I LOVED the "through the looking glass" effect, stepping from black and white to color. The entire garment just works and the spots are wonderful!! You inspire me to create my own projects. I am so glad you leave in the project workflow, because when that happens to me, I always feel like I must not have enough knowledge. Making the process real and showing us the troubleshooting really makes your channel so great.
I think that the spots took the dress from, “okaaayyyy, interesting…” to “oh my gosh, the design, fabric, and spots are totally pulled together and they WORK!” ❤️
Awww That's like my 90's/First Grade self's dream dress!!!! Lisa Frank's stuff was/is the epitome of fun in colour! Thank you for making this!!! I am literally on the verge of tears of joy seeing this dress!!! The designs in my head definitely became 'more practical' by grade six when I drew a design for my future wedding dress - to marry Aj from the Backstreet Boys of course - to have a big fancy white ballgown with copious amounts of REAL FRESH roses sewn directly on it. Isn't it wonderful how free our creativity was and still is when we just have fun!?!?!
Where in Morgan accidentally drafts a dress in her skivvies. This is SO CUTE!! The leopard spots really do finish it off nicely. Ok, so far, a rainbow Robe a la Francais, and now a rainbow 16th -- 15th C dress. Sounds like a series in the making.
This reminds me of the chemise a la reinebow! I love the idea of extremely colorful historical clothes Also now I realllly want some 16th century dresses….
This is so cute! I especially love the spots on the lower half. There's no such thing as overdoing it when you're being inspired by Lisa Frank. And I definitely have made things that put a big smile on my face but that I'll probably never wear in public (such as my 50s inspired fit-flare dress out of novelty cotton fabric with 50s pinup girls on it).
@@JainMonroe queer breakfast cafe ( @morgandonner if you're ever in Chicago the folks at smack dab in Rogers Park would absolutely adore this dress (and they're only about 15 minutes off the freeway))

Also, maybe wear it back to the fabric store where you bought the fabric. I'm sure some of the staff were wondering what you were going to make with all that rainbow fabric!
Oh my goodness, Morgan!! I made a white corset for our daughter's friend 2 years ago! It was definitely a project!! I loved the finish project!! I know what you mean with seeing the dark threads through the outer fabric! I used white in white, thankfully! The white fabric that I used: WHITE FLOUR SACK FABRIC!! I know! I love the white fabric woven look. I like the slightly heavier weight of it! That was my first time working with white boning! When I figured out how to use it, it was so much Fun working with the boning! Our daughter's friend loved it!! Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of her wearing it, but I do have pics of it on the mannequin.... I'm going to see if I can find one to post for you! I love you! You rock, girl!!! Thanks so much for sharing your sewing and sewing technique knowledge!!! ♡
Never before have I thought of the words "tasteful" or "grown up" when it comes to the chaos of rainbows that is Lisa Frank cheetah print. AMAZING JOB, super cute and absolutely delightful!
Occasions for wearing it: Today. Next Tuesday. Going out for coffee. Buying groceries. Thursday. While making your next video. Picking up a pizza for dinner. The list is endless! This is next-level history bounding, and also makes me regret never having learned to sew.
Me when she started to add the leopard spots: noooooo, whyyyyyyyy 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ Me when I saw the endresult: ….. omg…. I love it. The spots really add something.
Girl, you can wear this dress fully confident that you will instantly bring joy to everyone who sees you. ❤💚💜 And the spots just make the dress. I am living for those spots! A+, my dear.
This is absolutely delightful! It makes my inner 90's kid squee. The spots totally make it, although I feel like a liberal spray of glitter is in order. As for where to wear it?? I feel like most Renaissance faires have some kind of "Day of Wrong" event where this would be absolutely at home.
I’ve never been into any kind of animal print but I totally agree without it it wouldn’t be a Lisa frank dress!!! (Although I might have gone the gauzy overlay/sparkles route instead) but I love the tie closure at the top and the ribbon you chose! So cute! I also love that you tried to match the gradient when you were seeing. I totally didn’t even think of that and it looks so good! Allows those other details to really shine! Amazing work! And I don’t know it seems like the perfect dress to go grocery shopping in! I probably would wear it everywhere!
>Notification for new Morgan video >sees rainbow >IMMEDIATELY stops everything else Oh dang this turned out SO dang cuuuute! The colour-matched boning threads was SO dang satisfying, I made a very unladylike noise of appreciation LMAO Also the RAINBOW RIBBONS AGH- my inner ten year old is squealing in glee LOL I am forver going to use that centr back thread marking trick- ive been using chalk marking this whole time and its so easy to lose it, i dont know how i never thought of that!
Now you have rainbow hair!! I love the slow progression of mainly monochrome to bold colors😅 Now I think of you as one of the more colorful seamstresses on youtube (i rlly like it btw, makes me happy too).
it's nice to know I'm not the only one who changes her mind 10 times before being happy, I love the colours, another gorgeous dress I'm adding to my projects
I've seen several of your videos and am wowed by your skill, artistic sense, and abilities! I am an old seamstress, and went to a large urban high school with a fabulous sewing teacher. I took every sewing class she offered and made a fully tailored, lined, wool coat with bound buttonholes as a senior. But I've never done anything like what you do! You're amazing.
I am legitimately screaming about how good the bodice came out with the thread matching and the ribbon, I mean WOW I cannot wait to attempt recreating this, its such a great shape!!!
Me: “Lisa Frank, why does that sound familiar? 🤔” Morgan: *shows reference pictures* Me: “Never mind, I know EXACTLY where this is going 😂” This was a delight to watch! I’m currently working on a project that falls into the ‘joy of making’ category so I totally understood where you’re coming from!
When you put a video of the result of your inner battle of "to seam-rip or not to seam-rip" overtop of you talking us through the inner battle - dude, I felt that. I FELT that.
I love this format! I struggle with videos that are mainly voice over (I’m either out like a light or ADHD brain is off with the next “squirrel” lol) so this was really nice to watch your process and see it in real time. Less fancy + more real = 100% relatable 💕
Oh. My. Lord! Did anyone else’s OCD heart start crying tears of pure joy when Morgan showed us how she color-matched the thread on the bodice!!! She is a QUEEN!
Oddly enough, I think the rainbow dress NEEDED the spot detail at the bottom. I don't want to say the fabric was plain (hello, rainbow!), but it just needed something more. And boy did you ever deliver! This would have been the dress of my dreams when I was just a wee bratling. I was obsessed with Lisa Frank in the 90s and was (am) also REALLY into historical fashion. I can't sew worth a damn, but I really love researching it and watching it being made.
I've just rewatched this video particularly for the section starting 05:18 when you opened my eyes to using foam core board to help with taking patterns from existing garments; I can't wait to try it for myself!
I wish that I, and everyone, had the fabric, time and money (and that the earth had the ressources for everyone) to make dresses or other garments just for the heck of it with no intention of wearing them... However as this isn't currently the case.. I will enjoy this video and be grateful that it has inspired me to be more bold in my colour choices (not just Rachel-hobbit-core earth tones) and creative with my patterning, however I think I will be keeping to the more frugal use of fabric and utilitarian projects that speak more to me. Thanks for the ideas, inspiration and techniques!
You know if you're short on fabric (I hear you, it's ridiculously expensive 😭) then how about just making the bodice, and wear it with a separate skirt, or even pants? Or give it a little peplum to mimic a dress. I really want to make a sleeping beauty in the woods/this dress kind of thing but...I have nowhere to wear it to. So trying to think of ways I could tone it down to be more wearable. And brown. I don't have any cottage core colours in my wardrobe haha
@@katyb2793 hi thanks for your comment, I totally agree. I'm currently in the process of planning out the top only of Morgan's heraldic dress with one metre of wool fabric that I found in a charity shop. I'm hopeful that it will come out sort of Robbin hood style. And guess what.. it's brown!

The leopard print along the hem is AMAZING and really finishes the look. I was a kid in the 90s and have never stopped loving the Lisa Frank aesthetic. Beautiful execution!
Ok so now I want a colab from all the sewing youtubers historical Lisa Frank! BTW this is the cutest thing you have made and I love all your dresses. I love bright colors and and want to make something for my self like maybe the same top but with a split skirt and just past the knee so like a historically inspired romper type thing idk you have my mind spinning with ideas now.
Yes! This needs to be a thing. All the costubers were doing Disney princesses a couple months ago. This needs to be the new thing. “Lisa Frank but make it * insert desired historical era *
My first historical garb, made I two days for an SCA event I was invited to unexpectedly, was this basic Tudor style dress. Only I made it from a plain wool blanket. I had forgotten just how comfortable they are to wear (yes, I wore it in mundane life as well) and how stylish they look. The true beauty of historical garb is that you can use modern fabrics - though I stick to pure cotton, linen or wool, no polyester mixes - and make a stylish and comfortable dress that can easily be worn out in modern times. Think I will turn those 4m of cotton poplin into a Tudor style dress, boned with cable ties, which I can wear over my shifts or other underdresses, mix and match gives you much more choice. Thank you Morgan Donner, you have solved the dilemma of which style dress to see next, and it's time I alternate between simple Norman and simple Tudor style dresses in my daily life. I cannot thank you enough for solving this particular dilemma, I shall begin drafting the bodice pattern this afternoon.
I had a total Bob Ross experience when you added the Lisa Frank leopard spots. My immediate reaction was "NOOOOO! It'll ruin the pretty rainbow!" But, as per usual with any bold move by Bob Ross, those leopard spots really do make the whole thing come together perfectly. I'm so impressed! Your dress turned out SO beautiful and fun!
Woops, sorry! I try to make it different/distinctive so that you can tell when the sponsorship begins and ends, but I'll try to go a touch lower next time!
You chose a good time to do this project. As a quilter, for some reason they came out with a LOT of rainbow colored fabrics this spring/summer so lots of great stuff to choose from.
Beautiful dress Morgan! Only one thing to note about acrylic paint ,the heavier you put it on fabric the more likely it is to chip and crack through washes .
Ouch! I felt that fall. I would wear this dress everywhere. Grocery store, lunch at Perkins, Target and the local nature center. Museum? I'm wearing it. DMV, yes please! I'd have to bring the hem up a couple of inches, but I'd live in that dress!
I was a little worried when you pulled out the paints but I think it just made the skirt so much better and more of a Lisa Frank vibe! It turned out amazing!
my best friend and I are watching this video right now and we just started yelling and clapping when we saw your colour matched threads on the bodice. beautiful.
This is one of my favorite Morgan projects-- right up there with the chemise a la rainbow! Did you have Lisa Frank school supplies in the 90s? I think everything I owned was either Pokemon, Harry Potter, or Lisa Frank.
Rather than using the textile medium, which can be really expensive, you can also use fabric softener mixed with the acrylic paint. I've used it several times and the paint is malluable on the fabric and doesn't chip off in the washing machine.
This dress makes my eyes bleed and I kinda adore it. Like, it turned out amazing... I am a boring muted-colors-prefering person, so the colors are a bit much for me... but I still fully, completely, entirely adore the existence of this dress and may you have all the fun in the world with it XD
I really loved seeing your process!! It's so much more realistic, doesn't create this awed and ashamed expectation in me that every project should be perfectly planned out and the plan stuck to. But also, I just love seeing you work, yanno? Nothing more inspiring than watching someone else's gears spinning to such a glorious effect, and it makes for a more enthralling story with all those twists and turns lol
Fabulous project! Shout out and a huge thank you to your friend who shared the sewing space and supplies with you, and with us. May we all be so gracious with our precious pretties.
short tip for putting these small texts in your videos, leave them a bit longer. there is this rule of thumb there you leave the text as long you need to read it three times out load in normal speaking speed :) Nevertheless, I LOVE the Dress XD
Sorry about that! I often add the quick tiny text as a lil joke or footnote, so I do 'em quick on purpose, like a little easter egg. BUT, I will try to make them a smidge longer/with less text in the future!
I'm very new to sewing and it is really nice to see someone who has been at it longer show their process of tweaks and changes along the way because it reminds me that's just part of the process. Plus, it is helpful to see how other people troubleshoot obstacles. Personally, I would love more of this style video! It was great and I love the dress! 😍
Thank you for the bit where you showed how to use the garment to create a pattern, I'd love to see more of that! I also really enjoyed seeing your process and how you make changes as the garment progresses. You wear your black 'kirtle' dress a lot and I love it! I think you said it is from eShakti but do you remember the name of the original style? I'd love a red one! I don't think we ever had Lisa Frank in the UK, or if we did, it was after my childhood, but I enjoy the rainbow vibe! This is a little like your 18th century rainbow chemise and it's gorgeous. Splendid work as always.

I wanna make an oversized rainbow blazer with leopard spots. If I ever get into sewing, I have inspiration. Thank you for making a wonderful and whimsical video, I need some smiles and magic right now.
For an inexperienced seamstress who has made a few things with patterns, hearing how you go about drafting a pattern is *fascinating*. The "instagram post" method where we see the amazing finished product is cool, but my favorite part is seeing how you and other creators actually go about making things. Your dress is incredibly extra and I love it. I had an LF jaguar diary so those spots are very nostalgic for me!
So fun! This and your chemise a la rainbow make me smile so big! Also, I really like this chatty, slightly dithering, vlog style vid from you. It's a bit reminiscent of the vibe I get from Noelle - like I'm hanging out sewing and chatting with a friend.
This is essentially what I had in mind when I started my rainbow 17th century outfit! My result is rather more a historical take on modern Easter/circus- but I love it nonetheless! Fabulous work as always Morgan! Always a delight! Btw my mum is so grateful to you for teaching me how to do cross braids etc. She calls it fancy hair 😍

Or tailors chalk. It comes in different colours. The fading ink is really useful though.
Yes! I use those in my embroidery proyects and work amazing
When you walked out that door with the black dress and transitioning to the colorful, it looked like the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy entered into Oz the first time.
Yes! That's my favorite movie and that's what I thought of too! So cool!
That's immediately what came to my mind as well!! 😁
You know? This comment intensified my feeling that a dress like this could be worn at Pride. #FriendsofDorothy
I was also thinking it could work as a coming out metaphor LOL
@@MizzWGGrrrl you absolute GENIUS

I love this dress, but I think even more than that, I love seeing your personality come out more, as you share with us how you go back and forth with decisions, ideas, and creativity. It's much more helpful to see if of the chaos that happens when you create something, as opposed to a pretty how-to video.
But also? RAINBOW LEOPARD LISA FRANK DRESS!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Agreed, completely! I love watching people go through their creative process. It is thoroughly inspiring. :)
Its also very realistic and relatable. Everyone has moments like this when working on a project. I am glad she kept the "maybe i like it better this way... or maybe that way?"-moments in.
It’s so perfect. The whip stitch color matching is some absolute witch craft, I love it
I LOVED the "through the looking glass" effect, stepping from black and white to color.

Make all the rainbow things!
This reminds me of the chemise a la reinebow!
I love the idea of extremely colorful historical clothes
Also now I realllly want some 16th century dresses….
"For funsies" is my favorite reason and rainbow is my favorite color.
💗
This is so cute! I especially love the spots on the lower half. There's no such thing as overdoing it when you're being inspired by Lisa Frank. And I definitely have made things that put a big smile on my face but that I'll probably never wear in public (such as my 50s inspired fit-flare dress out of novelty cotton fabric with 50s pinup girls on it).
Morgan: I don't know where I'm ever going to wear this to anything...

@@JainMonroe queer breakfast cafe ( @morgandonner if you're ever in Chicago the folks at smack dab in Rogers Park would absolutely adore this dress (and they're only about 15 minutes off the freeway))
My friends and I used to get dressed up in (comfortable) cosplay and then go somewhere normal like a burger joint or the like. If it wasn't so hot where I live now I'd totally wear something like that to go shopping!
Also, maybe wear it back to the fabric store where you bought the fabric. I'm sure some of the staff were wondering what you were going to make with all that rainbow fabric!
@@thecupthatcheers9763 Ooh I like that idea!!
And they'd probably love to see it! 🤩
Oh my goodness, Morgan!! I made a white corset for our daughter's friend 2 years ago! It was definitely a project!! I loved the finish project!!
I know what you mean with seeing the dark threads through the outer fabric! I used white in white, thankfully!
The white fabric that I used:
WHITE FLOUR SACK FABRIC!!
Imagine a sewing cooperative kind of like bon apatite. Everybody goes in on a sewing studio and collabs are easier.
Occasions for wearing it: Today. Next Tuesday. Going out for coffee. Buying groceries. Thursday. While making your next video. Picking up a pizza for dinner. The list is endless!
This is next-level history bounding, and also makes me regret never having learned to sew.
It's never too late to learn.....I'm trying needle lace.....I have to take me glasses off to see what i'm doing, but i'm trying.
Another occasion for wearing it? Next time you are at Costume College!!!
Sewing channels on TH-cam make me feel so creative. You don’t have to be a genius or sewing prodigy or make cool things. Love you guys 💜
Me when she started to add the leopard spots: noooooo, whyyyyyyyy 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Me when I saw the endresult: ….. omg…. I love it. The spots really add something.
I thought the exact thing. 😊
Same here! I normally hate leopard print, but this really did make it more Lisa Frank, and how she added them was beautifully tasteful!
Girl, you can wear this dress fully confident that you will instantly bring joy to everyone who sees you. ❤💚💜
And the spots just make the dress.
*bumps fist on table* yes, glitter!! It needs either a cistern load of spray glitter or Angela Clayton level of minute sequin work!
@Silvanrose I love the renaissance gone wrong idea!! That sounds so fun.

The colour-matched boning threads was SO dang satisfying, I made a very unladylike noise of appreciation LMAO
Also the RAINBOW RIBBONS AGH- my inner ten year old is squealing in glee LOL
I am forver going to use that centr back thread marking trick- ive been using chalk marking this whole time and its so easy to lose it, i dont know how i never thought of that!

@@MorganDonner i'd wear it every day!!!!!
I absolutely adore this dress. I wasn't sold on the fabric, but it came together. It's so joyfully beautiful.
So I 100% need a dress like this immediately
Me: “Lisa Frank, why does that sound familiar? 🤔”
Morgan: *shows reference pictures*
Me: “Never mind, I know EXACTLY where this is going 😂”
This was a delight to watch! I’m currently working on a project that falls into the ‘joy of making’ category so I totally understood where you’re coming from!
⬆⬆⬆
Every 90s child watching this.
“I have to make decisions and I don’t like it.”
Ugh, so relatable!

We should make t-shirts with it!
@@loristein9555 I might actually do it.
I felt that in my soul x
Oh. My. Lord! Did anyone else’s OCD heart start crying tears of pure joy when Morgan showed us how she color-matched the thread on the bodice!!! She is a QUEEN!
This dress makes my inner child so happy! I think you should go read stories to small children in your Princess Lisa Frank dress!
Ooh!!! That is a brilliant suggestion!!!!
Aaaah the leopard print on the bottom is SO COOL!!

And guess what.. it's brown!
@@judithlashbrook4684 that sounds amazing!! I also buy a lot of my fabric from the op shop (and patterns!) I've found some lovely fabrics over the years. Good luck with it! I'm sure it'll turn out really lovely!
Lisa Frank is a nightmare of a person and corporation, but the aesthetic is still super fun. Love the dress so much! Now I need the confidence to wear neon rainbows too. 💖
Yep, a real nightmare, sadly!
I just spent half an hour seam ripping applique on my current project because I stitched the inside to the outside. 😆 Nice to know I'm in good company.
I do things like this far too often! I made a few cushion covers recently, thought I'd got them perfect and then noticed hadn't sewed one of them right sides together
Im literally dying, the reveal looked like a tampon commercial in the best way😂
Wowzalabowza what a dress. Sometimes more IS more! Also, I love how much care you took with every detail even for such a funsies project. 🥰
Thank you so much!

If you ever go larping it would be so cool to wear that and you could play the part of a fairy/something that makes rainbows and happiness!
What a beautiful dress! You have to wear it everywhere, my 4 year old is firmly of the belief that you are a real life princess and the amount of joy you would bring is unreal!
I absolutely adore this bodice, especially with the ribbons. Talking about Lisa Frank takes me all the way back to high school in the early 80s.

The leopard print along the hem is AMAZING and really finishes the look. I was a kid in the 90s and have never stopped loving the Lisa Frank aesthetic. Beautiful execution!
Watching you stitch the bodice to the skirt gathers was the most satisfying thing to watch! I would watch you do that for HOURS!
I cannot thank you enough for solving this particular dilemma, I shall begin drafting the bodice pattern this afternoon.
i definetly did NOT miss read the title and thought it said 1950s, anyways love your vids
Lol. Yeah, me either.
I saw your comment and was super confused because I had definitely read it as 1950s. Then I went back and checked, and it all made sense
Nope. Nobody else did either. 🙄🙄
@@susanrobertson984 why you gotta be like that?
@@ebunni5862 oh no no no. I also misread the title. I am rolling my eyes at myself. Sorry that didn’t come through!!!
You just made me realize the weather outside is *great* and I should totally go read a book in the garden.
As soon as this video is finished, haha.
Also, just like your tie-dye chemise a la reine; I *love* this project. Both of them are great!
Lastly, just a note, the music in the sponsor segment was a tad loud compared to your voice.
Yep, for sure! I'll try to be super careful when washing this one.
Me too. At first I was like, no, don't do that, but the end result is so Lisa Frank. I love it.
my best friend and I are watching this video right now and we just started yelling and clapping when we saw your colour matched threads on the bodice. beautiful.
You don't know where you'd wear it? Wear it EVERYWHERE--it's awesome!
I love seeing the thought process as you go!! It makes me feel more normal when I’m making and having design change thoughts.
This is one of my favorite Morgan projects-- right up there with the chemise a la rainbow! Did you have Lisa Frank school supplies in the 90s? I think everything I owned was either Pokemon, Harry Potter, or Lisa Frank.
Pretty much same here lol!
Rather than using the textile medium, which can be really expensive, you can also use fabric softener mixed with the acrylic paint. I've used it several times and the paint is malluable on the fabric and doesn't chip off in the washing machine.
I loved the cool ceramicist kinda look you had while “planning”
Oh my it's definitely very Lisa Frank 💜💚💛🧡💗🦋and yes the spots set it off lol
I felt that wipeout at the end. Take care of yourself!
Seconded, I read fast and had to rewind it to finish reading what was written.
Sorry about that! I often add the quick tiny text as a lil joke or footnote, so I do 'em quick on purpose, like a little easter egg. BUT, I will try to make them a smidge longer/with less text in the future!
I watch on 2x speed and tbh i dont even react fast enough to pause in normal speed 😅
