    Didn't give examples of sprocket wear just chain.

      Actually the loose chain around the teeth is showing the wear of both. And the angled teeth on some... but I should have pointed that out better. Thanks for the call out. Next time I will point those out.

    Great info! I just finished the MABDR and I was wondering how to really tell if it was worn out or if the teeth were just shiny from normal wear.
    I’d say it’s time to replace both. Thanks for the info. 🍻

    I usually swap every season anyway, but I use cheap chains and steel sprockets. I like the insurance of fresh stuff than a chain stuffed in my case.

      @@manybikes well dude a chain and sprockets what $120 maybe $240 if you like unobtainium.. that's a lot cheaper than sourcing and cracking cases open. Take bikes like the Africa twin or the Dr 650 for instance with a Kush drive hub and you see all of these posts asking if they need to be serviced or how long you can stretch it out. In my opinion if you're asking those questions you're asking the wrong questions to be a motorcycle owner.

    This was a really awesome video - can you answer a couple of more questions?
    1) What type of chain is correct to use on my T7 if I ride 50/50 (O-Ring, X-Ring or NoRing?)
    2) Is using the Master Link Clip supplied with new chains the safest/best way to install, or should you use a chain rivet tool set?
    3) If you have an O or X ring chain should you still clean and lube it every 2-400 miles? (a few people online have posted that O or X ring chains should NOT be lubed)
    Thanks!

    • @manybikes
      @manybikes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Your T7 should use any o-ring, X-ring, z-ring chain. Much better for road use. It’s quieter and works longer. I’ve done both … lubed and not lubed. The cleaned & lubed chains last much longer than the ones I have “just let go”… like 1/2 as long! Clean and lube is a pain in the ass… I hate it… but it is a necessary evil. Unless you like swapping your kit every 5 - 7k miles ;) Clip vs. Rivet… The rivet is the way to go, but the clip has never failed on me either. I have a video coming soon if a swap on the 1190. Hope this helps.

    Old engineer and farmer here. Couldn’t tell from the video but I bet that worst case chain also had a sprocket with teeth that were no longer round in the gullet but oval. The oval gullets mean that only one tooth carries all of the tensile force instead of several teeth the way it’s supposed to be carried. Run that chain long enough and the sprocket points will break off. If you see wear on the rear sprocket then the front will be worse by a factor of whatever the reduction ratio is.
    Long before that happens though, there are nasty little micro jerks that transmit both upstream and downstream from the sprockets and chain. The rear wheel don’t care but the tranny really, really doesn’t like it.
    PS, waiting for the full Heidenau Ranger review…😎

    • @manybikes
      @manybikes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for this info! The Ranger is worn out and I’m working on the full feature. It has been a pretty solid set of tires. Just hit 5k on them today. Super stable on the highway and pretty good off-road. Many loos terrain situations the front tire wasn’t good at all…

    • @flatlandriver2471
      @flatlandriver2471 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have a klx230 and I put a Ranger on the front🙈 I’m 90% highway but the other 10% is heavily gravelled provincial roads. I hate gravel but no way around it.
      Also, jerk is a technical term… start with time and distance; if you travel a certain distance in a given time you have velocity. If you have a change in velocity over a given time you have acceleration or deceleration. If you have a change in acceleration in a given time you have jerk. Jerk is anathema for mechanical stuff. Actually, when I think about it, I also really hate chains and sprockets.
      If you have new chain and sprockets on, say, an electric motor running a hydraulic pump, it’ll sound nice and steady like a sewing machine. But when the chain and teeth wear it’ll sound sing-songy, with an increase and decrease in frequency even when rotational speed is constant. The bigger the difference in drive/driven sprocket size, and the more the wear, the more pronounced the noise will be. This is because of the slip angle of the rollers going in and out of the gullets, which increases with wear. You can actually hear the micro jerks.

    To clarify.. So when my chain is streched out to the point I need to adjust my wheel back, it's time for a new chain and sproket instead of adjusting my wheel back?

    • @manybikes
      @manybikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nope. You need to adjust your wheel to create correct tension throughout the life of the chain. At some point the chain and sprockets will be so worn and loose and adjustment does not help.

    • @manybikes
      @manybikes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When it's loose. It should only move a couple inches. If more... it needs to be tightened.

    Oh come one man you talk like a dealer that wants to sell sell sell, Perfection it's not necessary, we are becoming a nation of wimps, no you don't have to change sprockets and chain in the same time, specially the rear sprocket, that one lasts forever. I've rode bike that sounded like a Panzer tank, when the dealer recommends a sprocket change, you can go 5x longer on it with a new chain

    • @manybikes
      @manybikes  ปีที่แล้ว

      I run mine until the rollers fall off… I have swapped just the chain to have it get eaten super quick! Learned that one the hard way….

    • @flatlandriver2471
      @flatlandriver2471 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can run a worn chain. You can put new chain on sprockets with worn gullets. And then one day your tranny will pack it in and you’ll trade the bike, never making the connection that the vibration from your worn chain, and especially from the oval gullets in the sprockets, took out the tranny. If you don’t like your bike, I’ve got lots of old chain and sprockets for you😅
