This Kansas fan's favorite Kansas song. 47 years later, still fresh, still fascinating. Musically, their great teamwork on display, and Steve Walsh just magnificent on vocals, perfection. Lyrically, another one of Kerry Livgren's spiritually searching pieces, but can also be interpreted as overcoming obstacles.
Chod, you mentioned them doing the whole album live, they have actually done so, and is on a live album called " Leftoverture and Beyond "
    RIP Robby Steinhardt

I just saw them in Milwaukee a few weeks ago. The new violin player did Robby proud. It was a great show. Their 50th Anniversary Tour.
I first saw them in Milwaukee in 1974 when they were the backup band for Hawkwind.

This is my favorite song on this album. I believe that this album is the greatest album ever made. If you listen to every song on both sides of the album each and every one of them is GREAT! From the musicianship of each song, to the vocals, to the arrangement reflects nothing less than brilliance. Then add the lyrics of each song and then there's no equal. The words in every song on this album is so insightful and poetically constructed that theirs no album it's equal.
And this song, The Wall, is a master piece. The story how sometimes in our lives the path that we have chosen doesn't workout the way we want it to and thus we are faced with a WALL that we must confront in order to proceed unto our chosen destiny or choose another path. Such a brilliant song. Kerry Livgren doesn't get enough recognition for his song writing ability. He's a genius. I'm soooooo glad you are listening to this song. This and Hold On from their Audio Vision album sum up so much of what life is about and what challenges one will face during our lifetime. Even the album cover is a MASTERPIECE.
There's one thing I'd like to suggest and that's listen to the entire album in the exact order as on the album and with the lyrics to each song in front of you......

Facts...this album is prog rock greatness - it's technical, complex and diverse, but never loses its intrinsic musicality and listenability (far too many prog bands take innovation/technique too far, and lose the essence of what music should be), and I love it for that. Cheers!

Correct. Big Red on the violin
Kerry Livgren (piano/guitar) wrote most of the stuff. He was on a huge creative high here. The band was even amazed at his songwriting during this period
His subject theme was a spiritual journey. He tried numerous religions and eventually became a born again Christian
    Couple of recommendations
Kansas is still touring, going on a Major 50th anniversary tour this year. Still have the guitarist and drummer with them but the new lineup is smoking. Talented bunch
Go see them while you can.
And yes, they did cover the entire album on its anniversary a few years ago
And also yes, Gentle Giant was an influence
2nd recommendation, watch the documentary Miracles out of Nowhere. Should be steaming somewhere
A great story on how they came to be from humble beginnings in Topeka
Some tunes to check out from them:
    Lamplight Symphony
    Song for America
    Crossfire
    Glimpse of Home
    Icarus I
    Icarus II
    keep diggin Wilbur!!

As a fellow musician, I love your reactions and your appreciation for bands like Kansas and Yes, ect...
As an 18 yr. older when all of these albums came out, We were still learning songs from bands like Grand Funk Railroad, the Doobie
Brothers, the Stones and CSNY to play out.
Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Boston, Kansas,
Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull amongst many others were exploding on the airwaves (FM) and it was too time consuming to keep up.
Not to mention, Steely Dan, Fogelburg, Seals and Crofts, The Who, Zeppelin as well as the
Allman Bros., Heart, Foghat, both Winter Bros., ARS, Bob Seger,
Jackson Browne only to name a small few.
Needless to say, we never lacked for good music to listen to.
Our band also had a 20 song set of just 50’s tunes. It was a great time to be a young musician. I listen to tons of “America” and “Eagles” lately to enjoy my acoustic guitar. I started as a drummer, like you, and still have my acoustic kit of concert Pearls (45 yrs. old) that I still kick around on from time to time. Enjoy your youth.
It is permanent, but fleeting !! Carry on...

One of my favorite KANSAS songs. Next would be *Lamplight Symphony * I cry every time I hear it because it reminds me of my father. My mom died at 63 in 1989, and Dad never dated, not once after she left. He died in 2016, so that was a long time for him to be missing her. Jeez, I can't even talk about it without crying. Miss them both. I hope somewhere over the rainbow they're fishing in an idyllic lake in northern Wisconsin.

I believe this is the greatest album of all time. Every Single Song is brilliant! A MASTERPIECE. There's only a handful of albums that are in that category and they are Carol Kings Tapestry, Boston's first album Boston, Billy Joel's 52nd Street, and AC/DC Back In Black sneaks in there because every single song is not masterful like the others but is a HEAD BANGER from when the needle drops until it reaches the end. I'd also add the Gin Blossoms New Age Experiment in that conversation. What a fantastic album...

To understand Kansas you must recognize that the principal song writer (Kerry Livgren) was searching for meaning to his own life (which is what most of the songs are about). Livgren found Jesus through his quest to understand his own life and his true purpose and left Kansas to spend the rest of his life working in the gospel music business. Likewise, Dave Hope (bassist) left Kansas to become a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The level of musicianship of Kansas does not exist today in a "main stream" sort of way. I am glad I grew up with this music in the 70s when I was in high school. I got to meet Steve Walsh (singer) once and chatted with him for about 45 minutes while the stage was being set up. He was a nice guy indeed. Down to earth for sure.

Kansas were always prog from album one. See Beato on the brilliance of Carry On Wayward Son. Wayward son, by the way, is a companion piece to Icarus: Borne on the Wings of Steel on Masque, Masque remains my favourite Kansas album and is, for me, the most proggy. You can hear a lot of mediaeval musical forms on Masque which makes Kansas the most Gentle Giantish of bands.

    I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little more like something dear was lost
It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between
All I am and all that I would ever want to be
It's just a travesty, towering, marking off the boundaries
    My spirit would erase
To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimplse the other side
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
    I want to see
Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me to know it well
The treasures that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me
I must tear down the wall let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
    There is no loss

The Wall doesn't transition in from the prior song.

If you want to listen to something that is off the charts is the song " Time " by the Alan Parsons Project. For me it is a song for the ages. 😉👀🤔

Disappointed you didn't listen to the lyrics at all. Interesting message in this song!
It's about a journey of emotional self searching, the struggle of taking the harder of two paths.
I found it relatable and insightful as a teen.
This song follows "Carry On Wayward Son" on the album.
The song after "The Wall" is
    "What's On My Mind"
    It's a good one too❤

That's pretty much how the song starts. It's missing about 2 seconds of the beginning. Damn good song though.

As great as this album was, their next album _(Point of Know Return)_ was every bit as good in my opinion. You likely already reacted to the most popular song on that album _(Dust in the Wind),_ but there are lesser known masterpieces on that release that you would be quite impressed by such as _Closet Chronicles_ and _Hopelessly Human_ try those on for size when you get a chance. And as for the _Leftoverture_ album, I don't think you've yet reacted to one of the very best songs on it which is _Miracles Out of Nowhere._ Trust me, you won't go wrong with any of the 3 I've mentioned from a lyrical, harmonic or musicianship standpoint. Kansas is one of the greatest, albeit underrated groups ever.
