This whole album is fire. Cheyenne Autumn is one of the least played one of the best. Thanks for bringing it back out for us to enjoy.

Kansas was one of the best progressive rock bands of the 70s, and they still tour and put out albums to this day. That red haired guy was the violinist. You should continue your journey with them. I have a feeling they will be right up there with Yes on your list.
No band wants to hear this after 45 years have passed, but Kansas is one of the most underrated bands of all time. I saw them 3 or 4 times in the 70s, and they never failed to bring it!
Was privileged to see them twice!

One of their most poignant and beautiful songs, both lyrically and musically. The band's great teamwork on display, keyboard pyrotechnics from Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh, bassist Dave Hope spectacular(the Leftoverture album features his best work), great violin from Robby Steinhardt. Steinhardt and Walsh excellent on vocals per usual. That outro still gets me, despite having heard it hundreds of times, 47 years later

THIS is more like what Kansas is about. They are *THE* finest American progressive rock band ever, much in the vein of Gentle Giant and Yes. You must go back and listen to these lyrics, too....heartbreaking. And then listen to songs like, "Song for America," "Lamplight Symphony," "Magnum Opus," "The Pinnacle, and "Closet Chronicles." Mind blowing.... all of it.

Don’t forget “Incomudro Hymn to the Atman” Kansas has the human condition nailed in song. Plus when you buy a Kansas album there’s never a song that you don’t like. Actually, it’s impossible to pick a favorite song off of a Kansas album because you ❤ them all.
As a teenager in the 70's growing up in Kansas saw them many times. All excellent musicians classically trained. Awesome band!
The only member of Kansas who was classically trained was violinist/vocalist, Robby Steinhardt. The other guys, including Kerry Ligren, who wrote the bulk of their music and lyrics, were self-taught. You like apples?
If I could only have one album this is it. Awesome beginning to end.
If you understand the lyrics in context the composition of the music makes more sense. It's about the Cheyenne Nation fighting to survive during the movement into their land by white settlers backed by the U.S. Cavalry in the latter half of the 19th century. The drumbeat represents the battle and the tragic ending as they face defeat. I think the final note sung by Steve Walsh represents the lost cries of the dead to never forget them. Makes me think of the movie "Little Big Man".

Kansas is a band with such amazing instrumentalists and vocalists that are amazing. Steve Walsh, and Robbie Steinhardt. And figure, the songs written by Kerry Livgren and everyone else in the band. Such amazing talent.

Kansas is my all-time favorite band. The first concert I ever went to was to see Kansas in 1980 - their Audio-Visions tour. AWESOME band.

Kansas music will always stand the test of time to have a catalog of such caliber is a true gift from the creator. That being the maker of all life gives this gift of music it is completely ethereal......Kansas forever.....
Your reactions are spot-on. I was a transplant from Ohio to Topeka Kansas '73-'74. A new high school my junior senior year Topeka West. I believe prior to my arrival they were called white clover. I watched them play in the amphitheater and School auditorium after their first album. I think their first four albums listened in chronological order you get a sense of their growth. Each album was like listening to a book of music and lyrics. Not to mention the album covers where iconic. Two songs that stick out from that first album 'can I tell you'(important to today's climate) and 'lonely wind'resonated in my mind even as a teenager. A great progressive rock band. The Hammond B3 organ was an awesome instrument in that time. They were masters of their instruments without computers. If you listen you can hear it the early guitar work on dust in the wind is a finger exercise for the guitar according to Kerry livgren. I always enjoy watching anyone hearing for the first time. I see the joy that I still feel today.

Kansas first 7 albums are full of prog rock masterpieces. The 8th album is where the band became more radio friendly with only one prog song on each of the 8th and 9th albums.

This song is actually a story about the plate of the Cheyenne nation. It starts out with nice, peaceful, serene, music, and then in the middle you can tell they’re going to war. And in the end back to peace and serenity … “In the ground our bodies lay. Here we’ll stay” there aren’t many full blooded Cheyenne Indians left on the planet
Leftoverture AND Point of Know Return are both prog rock masterworks. Kansas was founded and is still driven by the drummer Phil Ehart. They languished for awhile but have recently returned to form. The latest couple albums are great and live,they are ON FIRE. go see them! They are touring everywhere.
You’re right about seeing them in person. You can’t believe that six guys can make that much music, even Rush can’t play Kansas music. I’ve seen Kansas I’m estimating 40 times and they’re still good today. They are all going on 70 years old.(the original members.)

Chod and Dee, this is from the 1976 Leftoverture album by Kansas. This is the same album that includes Carry On My Wayward Son which you mentioned. Kansas started out as a great American Prog rock band and later on turned more radio friendly. The song is about how the Cheyenne Indian nation was conquered as the nation expanded and moved west in the 1800’s. Another fun reaction guys. ❤

The Cheyenne were once a great and powerful Indian Nation. They were men of peace who were willing to share their land with the white man. The white man didn't want to share and exterminated them. This song tells the story and the shame of our history.
The Cheyenne lost many in battle with white settlers, but were not "exterminated". Sadly they were forced from their ancestral lands which was crippling for them.

Progressive Rock from the Heartland- All members of this band were prodigies -The Pinnacle is one of many master pieces worth taking a deep dive. Mysteries & Mayhem was the intro the Pinnacle but was broken up due to the record label thinking it was too long. Not too many bands attempt their material due to complexity as well as the vocal demands that Steve Walsh executed & pulled off at a level no one can match. His operetta falsetto heard towards the end speaks for itself. They are even better live-saw them twice in concert in the 70's! Walsh in his prime was untouchable!
Kerry wrote this whole album. I saw them in concert in 1978 and they were brilliant!
I bought this album whem I was 12. Loved it then but had no idea how really great and unique it really was/is. The whole album is fire! One of my top ten albums all time.

This album is one of the greatest ever. Please do yourselves a favor and check out The Wall next. It is track 2 on side 1. After Carry On Wayward Son, it is simply majestic. And then move on to Miracles Out of Nowhere!!!

Kansas had quite a few progressive rock tunes in their early days.I was lucky enough to see them many years later at a free outdoor town concert in Massapequa,NY and they still were great!Another fantastic more symphonic progressive band is Renaissance. My friend Robby Steinhardt ( violinist and singer ) , Maybe his favorite song in his own words. Westward Expansion of the "whites"....a plea to them, "cant we share the land?.....is there NO solution....can't we find NO other way....Lord let me stay"...........It is in fact a sad song about .....longing, sadness, brutal change, and then resignation to what's about to happen, right in front of their own eyes.

Kansas is/was such a unique band and most of their music is not radio friendly so it's so amazing how big they got. They truly sound amazing live and in fact they had problems getting bands to tour with them because they were just to good live. In fact Steven Tyler tried to unplug their power because they were just to good.

My interpretation: the Cheyenne were being rounded up to be carted off to a reservation. They decided to stay even after the army's cavalry unit refused to negotiate.
The hardest part for me to accept, musically, was the carnival-like style depiction of the tribe's battle to the death. It just didn't fit my mind-set. That is, until I realized that this was the tribe's solution -- to fight and die joyfully.
It meant their bodies and souls would forever be connected to this land that the government so badly wanted to move them from. It was ultimately the Cheyenne tribe's victory.
