    I hadn’t really thought of flash points or sediment until my very young daughter looked at the almost empty candles in the bathroom room and asked “but where did the candles go?” meaning the wax. She was adamant that I find out the truth for her when my answer was “into the air”, and she didn’t like that answer. It took all of a few seconds to realize it was dispersed onto everything…the walls, furniture and our lungs. Another gem from her when she was little was the smell of charcoal burning in the BBQ. She said “we can’t bring it into the house just because it’s cold, that goes into our lungs too and it’s bad”. She is 46 now and doesn’t ask a lot of questions because she questions everything and researches everything herself lol. My children have always amazed me with logic and wisdom even at very young ages. The Britanica Encyclopedias were my friends.

      Wow that’s wonderful!! especially that you fostered that it’s “ok” to ask questions.
      When I was a child, it wasn’t ok to ask questions . It didn’t stop me , still hasn’t!!
      Sadly, most of my questions went unanswered by my mom or I was given silly fairytale type answers that didn’t make sense to me , even as a child

    Yes! Safety first. I’ve used a wood stove for heat nearly 50 years. I was so nervous if the beginning that I had the fire marshal come to my home. I explained about how our house had been destroyed when I was 15. My little sister, 5, was playing with a small candle in our bedroom. She had watched my brother fill the back of his class ring. The candle ignited a robe hanging on the back of the door. We lost our family pets. For years after that, I would wake up during the night thinking I saw smoke filled house and glowing fire. Newly married it was quite disturbing for my new husband. My husband loved having a wood stove and was quite experienced at that. Only after talking with the fire marshal,a family friend, ( explained the science and Murphy’s Law) and sleeping on the couch for awhile, I got past my fear. However I’m still very cautious. Probably wouldn’t make Crisco candles. So glad to hear your input on this subject. Timely too.

    • @amieinnovascotia8490
      @amieinnovascotia8490 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s a terrible thing to have lived through. Like you, I have no intention of using Crisco candles. I would, however, use my old oil lamps with the liquid paraffin lamp fuel. Mostly I place them on a sheet pan laid across the burners of the gas stove. We heat this house with a dedicated wood furnace and a wood cook stove In the kitchen. That takes care of heat and cooking. In truth, the power is usually out only for a few hours here at a time. Except once: a severe hurricane knocked it out 4 days. Didn’t open the freezers and never even lost the ice cream. I’ve been hearing a lot about Crisco candles and flowerpot heaters which I doubt are terribly effective.

    Wow, you give me usable information from every video I watch of yours. That smoke relighting made me think of times of house fires that people are warned of rekindling, but I’ve never known it was the smoke that lit. My experience with flashpoint was from my very last live tree. I’d been careful to keep it watered, and when it was time to take it outside, my neighbor asked if he could drop a match on it to see how quickly it would burn. It literally “woushed ”, at the moment the match flame hit, it was engulfed. Needless to say, open flames, as we all know, can bet away from us, in whatever application they’re used.

    Thankyou Pam and Jim. Hope folks can apply this same info to chimney fires whether a ceramic or metal chimney. This was the basis for European home builders of the Tudor period to regulate chimney construction and made the builder responsible for a chimney fire that damaged other folks homes from fire....smoke is very flamable, and add in media or excellerants and you've got a real problem. Clean your chimneys every year please. Creasote and its' gases are very flamable.

Btw, Happy New Year to you and Jim! May God rain down His blessings on you in the coming year. ~ Lisa

    Most informative!
    I try to buy candles with lids. When I am going to put them out, I put the lid on top to eliminate the trailing after smoke.
    Thank you, Pam and Jim!

    Very interesting. I never knew you could relight a candle from the fumes but it makes sense. Those big cans of Cisco can become fireballs. Cannot wait to see your review of the terra cotta heating pots. Thanks, Pam. I appreciate what you do!

    I made the terracotta pot heater last year and attempted to use it to get warm during an outage. These same pots are now holding plants outside. It did nothing to help us stay warm; even after curtaining off the room to make it a smaller area.
    My natural gas line was working so I mixed up casseroles and other things to bake. That worked much better. I'm not dissing anyone else's experiences; just sharing my own. ❤
    I learned something new about the Smoke from the candle demonstration you shared. Thank you. This might help save a life.

    Wow, you learn something new every day! Never knew that, although if I think about it, it makes sense. A lot of people don't know that lots of dense particulate matter can be explosively flammable, I only knew it because I have lived in farming communities and knew of several silo fires, and a cotton gin fire. It wasn't the product that caught fire, it was the dust from the product that caught fire. This phenomenon of vaporized wax catching fire makes sense to me. Thank you!

      @RoseRedHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are very welcome. I thought the same thing about it making sense when I first learned about it. I have known of similar types of fires as well.

    O my gosh! What great information!! We used to do this with matches and birthday candles when we were kids....how dangerous!!! I can't stand to burn candles now, because I don't like the "melted wax vapors" floating in the air in my house. I realized that candles are dangerous to us, as much as the fire danger they can cause. I just love your science classes! Can't wait until the next one.

    Great points. I've found the larger and wider the container that holds the wick doesn't get too hot. If I had a small container I'd be concerned because the whole of the crisco will have melted and will have started to heat up the whole crisco to its flash point. Great advice.

    Always learning something new from you & Jim. Today, I have pressure canned 15 quarts of beef bone broth & I am in the process of making Butternut Squash Soup.
    Last week I did 36 quarts of turkey veg soup & chicken veg soup. I purchased some very nice noodles to give along with the soups.
    I was at a loss as to what to give to my Mother for Christmas. She is in her early 80's, in good health, lives four hours away and is now alone. What better way to let her know she is cared for than homemade soup and almost homemade noodles? A few bags of just-add-warm-water bread ingredients and she is all set!
    Thank you for inspiring me & teaching me the proper methods of pressure canning. I wasn't doing everything just right. Fortunately, no poisonings! I have watched all your videos - some multiple times as I prepare a particular food. My knowledge & confidence has grown immensely.
    Funny - when you ask Siri to set a timer, my Siri responds.
    Take good care. Much love to you fine people. Happy, healthy New Year!

    So appreciate this video. I have chosen to use solar and flashlights for light. I keep quite a bit of food, canned and dried, that can be used without heating so I will not need to cook unless the emergency lasts longer than a week. For heat I experimented one winter and only turned on the heat when essential. That was about 3 weeks. I found it essential that you not allow yourself to get cold. It was impossible to rewarm your body without an outside heat source once it got cold. Looking forward to your coming videos.

    Wow! Can’t wait for the next video. Several years back, our electric was out( ended up being 9 days without electricity). I bought and used a propane heater (Mr Buddy brand). I got a hose connector and hooked it up to a small tank that is gas grill size. I was nervous but desperate for heat. I had a smoke/carbon monoxide alarm then too. I’ve that propane burns cleaner than kerosene heater, be interested in your research on this.

    I was at the store today and almost bought Crisco to make these. I had jars and birthday candles but something held me back. Your post is quite timely. I think I’ll stick to my oil lamps. Blessings to you in the new year. Btw, Christmas clearance was wonderful for food stuff. Picked up 9 funfetti cake mixes for 37 cents each. Only require water and eggs (a good use for dehydrated ones!). Score! Expiration is 2023 so into the pantry they go! May package in jars and vacuum seal to preserve longer.

    Best method ever. And this jar is my favorite for salsa as you can serve right in the jar as it's low and wide using the large size lid. The low center of gravity is much safer than other jars using for crisco candles. I also use the beeswax candles cut in the appropriate length, and much easier than wicks of other type. Very long lasting.
