I think its interesting that the Marines were looking at this pattern in a tiger stripe variant as well. Apparently the ones who were assigned the test it actually found the tiger stripe variant to be more effective at camouflage. However, the Corps in all it's wisdom chose what it wanted.
As a 0331 from 1st Battalion 7th Marines, my opinion is that the MarPat is good for fall and winter. The Canadian CadPad I think is more suited for the spring and summer. Good video killer. 0331 Accuracy by volume.
I saw you pretty quickly in just about every scene. I was driving down some rural roads near Quantico a few years ago in late summer/early fall. The leaves were a much darker green then, with lots of light brown brush and tall grass and scrub along the side of the road. In the middle of the day, sunny sky etc and nobody on the road. Suddenly found myself staring at a squad of Marines crouched on an embankment, just off the side of the road, resting, not trying to hide. Damn. Did not see them until I was right next to them, and I'm very good at seeing stuff like that, even from farther away, even at night (PTSD + LSD + constant anxiety). That squad turned out to be part of a Platoon, which turned out to be part of a Company, broken up in groups along the road. Didn't see any of them until I got real close. Broad daylight, not even in the woods, just crouched in the tall grass with the woods behind them.
I have a couple of surplus MARPAT woodland blouses, and fading greatly effects the color--the faded one seems to blend better than my 'less faded' one. One thing about picking Brent out in the videos: the video frame itself tends to direct the eye. Out in the field, there is so much more to take in, picking out a still, camouflaged man is much more difficult. I also picked him up most of the time. :)
I'm an airsofter and I have to say that Digital Woodland is a great concealment pattern that blends in great being in front of tree trunks and walking down the middle of the muddy ground, only the green leaves revealed your position .
Unless you go into the reserves you don't have a choice. You will go in as an Infantry contract and then they will assign you an MOS once you get to SOI. I originally wanted to be an 11 and then they made me a 31 lol. I wouldn't have changed a thing though, being a 31 was the greatest experience a Marine could ask for. taking a (then) M240G into combat was pure greatness.
It is brother. As an 0331 you'll shoot thousands upon thousands of rounds. Just think, every can of 7.62 is a 200 round can. :) As a 31 you shoot a M240, .50 cal, & Mk19. All superb weapon systems and a blast to shoot. 0311's primarily do room clearing, but... There is most certainly times you will clear a room as a 31. Keep in mind your machinegun sqaud will be attached to a rifle platoon, you will be right there with the 11s unless your in the attack in which your needed to set up in a support by fire. During the invasion I actually had to sling my M240G and clear rooms with my M9 with the team leader and ammo man on certain occasions.
Marpat woodland is very effective in heavy brush or areas with alot of shade because its a darker colored camo pattern , im a big fan of the old m81 woodland pattern but everything it does marpat does better.
well the way i found him every time was i looked for a dark spot in the green vegetation and it never failed me. but still good camo! love the marpat and the video too!
It would be interesting to see a another video of this camouflage with our coyote plate carrier and maybe even an assault pack. Because real world that's what we would have depending on what we're doing. I'm in 4th CEB now but I know when we did patrols when I was still at Lejune I was completely satisfied with MARPAT.
As Prior Service USMC and US Army, I miss the M-81 Woodland Camouflage Pattern Uniform ( BDU), but, I really and truly appreciate wearing USMC Woodland and Desert Camouflage MARPAT Uniform. Semper Fi, Brent 0331!!🇺🇸🦅🗽⚔️
I feel like this might do better in Oregon, where the spectrum of green is a little more varied than where you are. But in your current environment, the MARPAT was very easy to spot. I'm a big fan of what you do. You're always my goto when I'm looking at different camo patterns and their effectiveness.
+Typhon Tactical I did a follow on video (Part II) which was filmed later in the season when some of the vegetation dead and wasn't so lush. The pattern preformed much better.
Woodland MARPAT and AOR2 (AKA NWU Type 3) are both derivatives of the four-color CADPAT TW camouflage. However the Woodland MARPAT has a horozontal trend, and uses almost the exact same color ways as the M81 Woodland Pattern, while the AOR 2 pattern has a vertical trend, and uses 2 shades of green (one dark, one light), black and a tan\white color. Without brown the pattern seems overall much lighter, making it more useful for dense vegetation, while MARPAT is more useful general woodland use. The colorways used in AOR 2 were actually initially rejected by the USMC when they were developing MARPAT as it was decided the inclusion of brown would be more useful to blend in with dead leaves, dirt and mud. AOR 2 is slated to replace M81 woodland in all aspects of Navy uniform, however it is most prominently worn with SEALS and SEABEAS
I think MARPAT is a little too brown-dominant, I believe it's intended to be better at blending in with dirt, mud, and tree trunks more than leaves. Green-dominant patterns like CADPAT and ATACS FG are better for lush forest. Colorado is mostly transitional environment, desert patterns work decently there, but Multicam will works like charm because it's specifically a transitional pattern.
MARPAT Woodland was specifically developed for pine forests around Parris Island And Camp Lejeune. I also will add it works great in such an environment.
***** lol, yeah you're not the only one. The actual true intent of the video though is to show people what the pattern looks like in the environment, that is why I leave the part of me walking out of the initial position in each scene so people can see how the pattern looks while both stationary and on the move.
I do fairly good, but imagine trying to find him while you're trying to watch your step, and scan all your surroundings while moving. I probably wouldn't see him.
Thanks for doing such a great video series. This footage along with 1000's of hours of other self-demonstation camouflage clothing products prove that the best concealment only happens when the testers hide inside/behind natural foliage from the environment. In all cases, the camo pattern clothing or suit (i.e. ghillie) plays a very small role in the true concealment. For every other second of video, when standing or walking, when MARPAT (or a 3D suit) alone is responsible for "concealment" it fails - the person is easily detected and targeted by an enemy, the silhouette is easy seen, the only difficulty might be targeting a specific part (like a hand) because MARPAT really only works to break up shapes within the body. The benefits of harnessing natural foliage as camo is the same reason every tester starts inside or behind it - because is dramatically scrambles and breaks up the silhouette, the shapes, the colors, etc. - whereas clothing, since it hugs the body, can do little but break up the internal shapes (a very small fraction of the overall concealment factors).
The TH-camr Brandon F. demonstrated such a thing with the British Redcoats. Even with their striking red coats, a modern day visual showed concealment behind natural foliage was key.
So this is awesome… but as a colorblind person, I immediately caught you every time the frame changed. My eyes are trained on shape and sharp breaks in light and dark, whereas most people focus on coloration and pattern, which camouflage was invented to break. Out of curiosity- I noticed marpat doesn’t use lighter shades of green. I feel like that would really shred better into the foliage we have especially in eastern NC
I could always spot him apart from 2:44. Wow! Also, it is one thing to sit in front of a screen knowing what to look for and a real combat situation. Very impressive camouflage, I must say.
Thanks for posting this. I personally think that this is one of the most effective woodland camouflage patterns. Also, I like your AR. You should do a vid on camo painting it.
great camo in a brown, or muddy terrain with some vegetation , but against green background it really stands out, if i was a sniper I would get you every time, but great job showing how it works
Blends in great with trees and dirt. That's why I use this stuff in the Fall for hunting when everything is not so green. I still like my old faded woodland when it's still green in the woods....however, after watching this, they seem to perform about the same. Just shows how my perception differs from what's apparent on camera.
Not bad, the only thing giving you away is the shadows that your body creates when you crouch down but considering the amount of plant life in front of you, I think its a great camo for that environment..
It's a darker pattern so keep mindful that it works better next to trees, shadowed vegetation, or muddy scrub brush. picked you out immediately when you were in the bright green leafy areas.
I was in NAM in 68-69 and finally got those cool camo utilites after a few months and i thought we were invisible? LOL.Now i think wearing foliage is the best camo. All they would need to do is put something to attach twigs to,like loops on the utiities.
Nice video ! This MARPAT digital woodland is very effectiv for my wildlife photography . Your videos help me to choose the right clothes for my hobby :)
You had me dead to rights at 03:45. This is very effective. All my gear is ATACS FG for summer, and standard ATACS for winter. I live in the South East.
I subscribed. Good videos. Maybe I'm just "old school" but o.d and woodland have always been my favorite. When it comes down to effectiveness, what is your personal favorite? Good videos, keep em coming! Also looks like you have one hell of a "playground",
Hy Brent Nice video. I think one of the best camo. I living to Hungary, here is one the best camo and my favorite camo is also best in Vegetato in Italy Army, and German Flecktran
***** Hy! I'm sorry, I do not speak good English. Here in Hungary is very good camo, but you can not really get original. Now I'm using an original italy vegetato uniform, it is also veri good
Nice video i liked it. You should buy more camo and do more videos with them, i like how you make videos! Maybe next you could do AOR2 digital woodland that would be sweet man. Im looking forward to seeing more of ur videos
Begg269 I've done a whole bunch of camouflage effectiveness videos just like this already. You can find them in the "Camouflage Effectiveness" playlist on my channel if you're interested.
I like this more than Multicam because when you need the greens in the camo it works. When you need the browns in the camo it works. I still like Multicam but for wooded terrain I'd choose this. Multicam works great in Afghanistan.
I have a replica of MARPAD, it is a bit faded and that works quite well in the NW when summer is in full swing and the grass are dry. It would be quite hard to spot if you are laying prone in that sort of environment.
These woods and river bottoms resemble the Mid-west, I lived in Illinois for a bit and this looks like the Illinois/Indians river bottom land. Someone mentioned that AOR 2 is restricted? I just got some AOR III pattern fabric with the Navy Globe & Anchor on it!
Brent0331 did you know that the USMC originally wanted to fully adopt CadPat? Canadian military said no tell them, so instead, the USMC and Canadian Military worked together and created Marpat while using the same template as CadPat. The USMC created 3 versions of Marpat. Marpat Woodland, Marpat Desert, and the largely unreleased Marpat Urban. Hyperstealth created the Marpat Arctic (different template) The reason the Marines didn't choose to release Marpat Urban is because Hyperstealth and the US military conducted objective camouflage studies. The results showed that Marpat Desert outperformed every other urban camouflage pattern.
An Airsoft squadmate of mine got a MARPAT uniform for playing. A lot of times where we play airsoft skirmishes in the local pine forest field, he was a pain to find once he conceals himself. I like the camo but I would prefer the classic M81 Woodland camo.
Nice, I watched this one and the one for Multicam, not sure which camo I like better, probably Multicam because I had an easier time finding the dark shades in the Marpat. Good practice for TD. Thanks, Staff Sergeant, US.Army, Combat Infantry Sniper, multiple tours
Great video man, for me MARPAT looked to dark for this area. It would be much more effective with light on it and in dryer environments. Also I have a request. If you can could you do a vid testing UCP? Again great vids
If I may add, it appears a tad too dark. I just look for the shadow. Found all, but one. It'll work, sure. Just too much black in my opinion. Thanks for these videos. They're very helpful.
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to get some MARPAT's, these really do well, I am actually stunned, as I had written off the pattern, it looked so brownish, and I was sure it was not very effective. I was wrong! This rivals the Multicam you tested, honestly. I like M81, but MARPAT does it better, you are right.
Is that REAL MARPAT? (Can't tell due to the shading in the Video.) Hint: Best way to tell is the Marine Corps Tag inside the Collar, and the Cammo EGA on the fabric.
MARPAT is sweet but eats too much light. Now if you sit at the base of those trees you might hardly need any cover to conceal your image. Thanks for the info. like the series on camo
My favourite camouflage is Serbian m10 camo (I believed it’s called m10 I’m not to sure though). It looks similar to marpat but the greens a bit brighter and I think it looks better than. Some of Chinese camouflage also looks good as well.
Did you ever test Woodland Marpat in the fall/winnter season. When it first came out, what I liked about it is that it would do better in the winter than the 80s/90s woodland. I remember see pics of guys inn woodland in the winter woods and they stuck out as if they were wearing solid black. I thot the brown in the Marpat would mitigate that. I'd like to actually see it.
Mark Stuber I actually just filmed a PART II to both Marpat and woodland, its rolling into fall so its kind of a mixture of green, brown and tan in the environment, and not nearly as lush in vibrant vegetation as it is in this video. I'll probably have those edited and uploaded sometime later this week.
It might be more effective to incorporate ambient foliage into a cape made of netting. ... Looking at this footage, I can really see how getting some fake foliage from Garden Ridge or Hobby Lobby and stitching it onto some camo netting or some nylon hammock or fishing netting (using some monofilament or outdoor upholstery thread) would be a worthwhile adjunct and could also be used to conceal my main ruck if I need to ditch it, temporarily, at some "rally point" or other way-point.
I treat your videos like Ispy and really enjoy them. The Marpat just seems too dark for your area. It was like look for the dark spot, however if I wasn't looking for you I doubt I would notice.
Sounds awesome. I've seen ( and I'm sure you have as well) people running GoPros off their 1913 rails, but I don't know I've seen a helmet cam outside of actual combat footage.
The MARPAT is pretty good but if you could find some CADPAT that would be awesome. In my opinion CADPAT is the best woodland camo at least in terms of vegetation.
I've often wondered if the best camo clothing would be something that utilized different patterns sown together. For instance, a digital, multicam, fleck, ASAT, woodland, mossy oak, realtree pattern sown together. To me, that seems a break up that would be hard to detect.
idea behind this pattern is that soldier could always stick few leafy branches on the gear and blend in perfectly in overly green enviroment like this. Problem is late autumn and winter when forest became 95% brown and everything moving in a lot more exposed to naked eye and this is where this pattern outperform everything else.
I love Marpat and love to wear it. But besides the coyote brown I never understood why they used the color green they have its seems to dark for most environments. I swear to god they should have made a digital version of the old woodlands camo?
funfact: MARPAT is effectively just a digitized version of Vietnam era tiger stripe camo. Don't settle for knockoff (tru-spec) versions, the genuine issue material is superior in every way and is noticeably more effective due to rich colors, correct pattern, uv treatment and light diffusing weave.
@Brent0331, seriously great videos brother! I can't imagine how much time and energy it takes to make these. I'm sure you have a life other than these videos, so, again, I want to thank you for your time. Have a question though, what is the difference between Digital Woodland, MARPAT, and AOR2? Why is AOR2 and restricted patern? Thanks in advance!
I'd love to see a video of the NWU Type III... Seems like a cross between MARPAT and CADPAT.... less Brown than MARPAT and less Green than CADPAT... It's kinda hard to get ahold of though... Last time I checked you can't just go into the Navy exchange and buy it... It's a command issued item.
+USN~CPO It would be interesting to see. I'll never understand why they chose to flip the pattern so that it's vertical....very counter-productive. If they had kept it horizontal then it could have been far better.
I spotted him right off. Usually I can’t spot him till he moves out. It’s too dark. Maybe it’s more suited for a area with less green shrubs and more large trees with leaves on the ground. It blends with the mud and the tree but not the green leaves.
I feel like the camo would be more effective if you didn't know for a fact someone was there. The darkness of the camo blends in super well with the trees and the mud, just not the leaves. But In the video we know for a fact that he's hiding there somewhere. So since the background is so bright green you can just scan over the dark patches to spot the out of place silhouette, where if you were just strolling along through the woods during a combat patrol you probably wouldn't notice it.
this series of videos must have taken a lot of work. where did you get all the different sets of camo? Thanks - it was interesting. Have you every used the ASAT camo? The take a different approach and I wonder if it is any good.
Thanks man. I like/collect camouflage and have been issued Woodland, 3 color Desert, Digital woodland & Desert MARPAT over the years in the Marine Corps.
I just bought some Official USMC issue woodland Marpat off ebay for $50 good video. And are you a Marine? I'm joining the U.S. Marines and hoping to become a 0811 Field Artillery Cannoneer.
It seems to me that MARPAT digital woodland camouflage is a very good year-round pattern for the southeastern United States. In this particular video, which appears to have been made in late spring with bright fresh leaves on the vegetation, it is perhaps not as effective as it would be in other seasons.
I concur, and with every woodland type pattern I’ve tested, every single one of them appears “dark” compared to the lush vibrate vegetation. What people have to keep in mind is, underneath that veg, or in areas that the veg has not overtaken, the patterns are extremely effective. In this environment the simple addition of some natural veg to the boonie and gear would make this camouflage incredibly effective.
I have not, I wont be doing that pattern. Its a commercial copy of MARPAT, I literally have crap loads of USMC utilities laying around the house from my years of service so I'm not going to spend money to buy a whole set of that. I'm sure it would preform just the same as MARPAT.
I think its interesting that the Marines were looking at this pattern in a tiger stripe variant as well. Apparently the ones who were assigned the test it actually found the tiger stripe variant to be more effective at camouflage. However, the Corps in all it's wisdom chose what it wanted.
I just looked it up and yeah it seems pretty cool.
I STILL wear tiger stripe.
@@billkaldem5099my favorite, too.

One thing about picking Brent out in the videos: the video frame itself tends to direct the eye. Out in the field, there is so much more to take in, picking out a still, camouflaged man is much more difficult. I also picked him up most of the time. :)
Sometimes I wish these camos had more green than brown in them, and sometimes a brighter green.
+The Pancake Mafia CADPAT is the answer
The Pancake Mafia Pencott green zone is the answer
look at AOR2, its all green
More brown shades!
Singaporean digital camo (very similar to marpat) is your answer
I'm an airsofter and I have to say that Digital Woodland is a great concealment pattern that blends in great being in front of tree trunks and walking down the middle of the muddy ground, only the green leaves revealed your position .
And airsofter??? Entertain me with some war stories, Mr John Rambo!
MARPAT has to be one of my favorite camos to exist. I own a set of the cammies and they are comfortable as hell.
Sorry Marines, its still too dark to be "universal", better than the old woodland, but still eats too much light.

Just picked up some Marpat Woodland and Flecktarn cammies. You're my go to reviewer for gear. Keep up the good work man!
The area this is tested in Is a little too lush and not wooded enough for a true woodland pattern
I live in Kentucky... great place to use MARPAT
So is Colorado... Lots of forest areas, but as I said you need an actual wooded forest for woodland patterns to work, not just thick foliage
I think MARPAT is a little too brown-dominant, I believe it's intended to be better at blending in with dirt, mud, and tree trunks more than leaves. Green-dominant patterns like CADPAT and ATACS FG are better for lush forest.

Thanks brother, hello from the U.S. I plan to do a video on German Flecktarn once the spring is in full swing.
*****
Hy!
I'm sorry, I do not speak good English.
Here in Hungary is very good camo, but you can not really get original.
Now I'm using an original italy vegetato uniform, it is also veri good
Thanks for the demo and effort taken to inform. As mentioned, it would do better a bit lighter overall.
+tongmaa Thanks for watching.
The field your at, looks really fun for camping and Paintball and Airsoft.
Hyperstealth created the Marpat Arctic (different template)
The reason the Marines didn't choose to release Marpat Urban is because Hyperstealth and the US military conducted objective camouflage studies.
I like the MARPAT and that's the uniform for my unit however I think either the multicam or X-cam would work better.
John G Thanks for watching.
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to get some MARPAT's, these really do well, I am actually stunned, as I had written off the pattern, it looked so brownish, and I was sure it was not very effective. I was wrong! This rivals the Multicam you tested, honestly. I like M81, but MARPAT does it better, you are right.
i enjoy your camo videos they are awesome i try to hide and blend in more and more everyday i think im getting this down
idk about american forests but here in europe works really well because like 90% of forests have dark pine and the ground gets muddy in fall
Is that REAL MARPAT? (Can't tell due to the shading in the Video.) Hint: Best way to tell is the Marine Corps Tag inside the Collar, and the Cammo EGA on the fabric.
I live In a place where there is lots of pine needles and the Dorset is brown and I use marpat it is extremely effective for paintball
MARPAT is sweet but eats too much light. Now if you sit at the base of those trees you might hardly need any cover to conceal your image. Thanks for the info. like the series on camo
Spotted you every time except first and last setting.
Thanks. I love your channel.
In Washington MARPAT works really well because of all the pine trees.
Seems the Propper version has more browns/rust than the Rothco which has much more greens. Seems like the Rothco would be better. Thoughts?
Brent does that in his OPFOR videos.
idea behind this pattern is that soldier could always stick few leafy branches on the gear and blend in perfectly in overly green enviroment like this. Problem is late autumn and winter when forest became 95% brown and everything moving in a lot more exposed to naked eye and this is where this pattern outperform everything else.
for me is the best woodland camo
The old German ss patterns was more effective in my opinion. I was able to pick you out nearly every time. The old German patterns I was unable too.
it would be interresting to see a similar test with the CADPAT woodland.
I love Marpat and love to wear it. But besides the coyote brown I never understood why they used the color green they have its seems to dark for most environments. I swear to god they should have made a digital version of the old woodlands camo?
Just use it at night or dense canopy and it's perfect.
funfact: MARPAT is effectively just a digitized version of Vietnam era tiger stripe camo.
The environment is a very bright and lush forest. The environment the camo adapts to most would be a darker more pine forest woods
I'd like to see this tested again in the later fall.
Already done.
Brent I think we need some 2024 versions of these videos recorded with a nicer camera.
A friend of uses this. Seems to work the same way regular woodland camo worked. Same colors but smaller pattern.
It is surprisingly brown and also goes better along with the brown background, rather than green.
Normally I can never spot him but with this camo i do it enough times. I got the vest but I'm gonna get a different camo patern.
UR TACTICAL has tactical clothing and they have that pattern.
I like NWU Type III better for this environment
For me marpat sticks out like a soar thumb. I saw you after a few seconds, every single time.
MARPAT woodland is pretty good!
Marpat work fine in autumn, with brownish dry leaves. For this vibrant wood cadpat, jgsdf, dannish camo is way better. Nice vid :D
Thanks, I’m going to try to pick up some CADPAT this spring to test.
CADPAT still reigns supreme. When hiding in thick green brush, it’s the thickness of the brush, not the camo that’s hiding him.
the Rothco version of this is slightly lighter with a more greenish tint in the tan areas
Hey man! Could you by any chance test out the Italian Vegetato camouflage? It looks like it would perform great wherever you film these videos!
this series of videos must have taken a lot of work. where did you get all the different sets of camo?
Thanks - it was interesting. Have you every used the ASAT camo? The take a different approach and I wonder if it is any good.
Thanks man. I like/collect camouflage and have been issued Woodland, 3 color Desert, Digital woodland & Desert MARPAT over the years in the Marine Corps.
1:30 saw you almost immediately.
i'm surprised ... i picked you out every time but one,
just seems to dark for foliage, looks a good match for the floor thou,
I just bought some Official USMC issue woodland Marpat off ebay for $50 good video. And are you a Marine? I'm joining the U.S. Marines and hoping to become a 0811 Field Artillery Cannoneer.
SurplusCharlie Thanks, and yes I am. Good luck
Thanks for your service, and thank you. You too
It seems to me that MARPAT digital woodland camouflage is a very good year-round pattern for the southeastern United States.
Have you done a test video of the digital woodland pattern? It's similar to Marpat, but it seems to have more brown than green.
I have not, I wont be doing that pattern. Its a commercial copy of MARPAT, I literally have crap loads of USMC utilities laying around the house from my years of service so I'm not going to spend money to buy a whole set of that. I'm sure it would preform just the same as MARPAT.
have heard the news theres a new CAM uniform for USMC its the US4CES AOR1 and AOR2 CAM must try,,, TY
The Marine Corps is not replacing MARPAT.
brent, big fan of your channel, can you do some NIR night videos with camera. wanted to see how different camo patterns respond to night vision.
Don't have that capability brother.
I think entry level, tactical night vision goggles cost upwards of three grand.
