There is a charm from these older cars that modern ones just don't have.

I agree. I’d love for someone to make a car that looks like this but that also benefits from modern technology.

@@utsavratti Closest I can think of is this company called "Revology cars" they make 60's design Ford Mustangs but with the latest safety/comfort and performance.

I was born in southern California and cars like this were everywhere back then. Our neighbors had a silver Celica GT just like this one and my mom had a 1974 Toyota Corona Sport Coupe, green with tan vinyl interior and a 5 speed. These Toyotas bring me straight back to my childhood.

I grew up in the 70s and remember these and other cars like it fondly. Great cars. Cheap, reliable, fun to drive. Miss those cars a lot. Thanks for the memories!!!

I found this car in the same color but faded from years of sun and weather. It was parked in a field 20 minutes from home. It had a tan interior and 5 speed manual transmission. We pulled the car out of the trees and brush with my dads truck, hooked a fresh battery on it and a 2.5 gallon red gas tank on top of the hood connected, with fresh hose, to the carburetor. We hit the key. It turned over a few times and fired right up. Drove it on the trailer and paid $125 for it. Year was 2004 and paid for with my birthday money (14) lol proceeded to tear it down and make a dirt track car...gutted it, added roll cage and tin, gauges, seat, harness, fuel tank, tires, cam, valve springs, exhaust header, and locked the rear end. It was a super fun car and came along at a good age to learn to drive a quick car but man would I love to have it in my garage fully restored right now. (Mom tried to tell me to restore it when we drove it off the trailer and down the road)

Great video! I remember this car very well. This was a very desirable car if you were between 16-30 yrs of age. Back when sporty was delivered more through styling than performance! And….. that was all that was expected.

That's a sweet ride! Very well preserved, would make a fun weekend car. Yeah, those 1970s and 1980s Japanese cars rusted out way before they wore out mechanically. The Celica was originally introduced as Toyota's answer to the Mustang, but obviously those cars went in two different directions after a while. I remember my father borrowing a really cool Celica like this one from my uncle when we were on vacation. I was just a little kid, but I still remember it.

I owned this exact blue 77 Celica GT liftback. My grandmother purchased it new from the Northern California Toyota Dealership in Napa and it came with an optional metal rear window louver that was very stylish and kept the car cool in the summer. The wire spoke rims were the same as the one on your video (which is missing the wire section) They were indeed supplied by Toyota for all the “GT” only models that were sold that year. The owner didn’t buy after market rims, those came with the GT. Same as the ones on my car.
The front seats matched the rear so yours were definitely reupholstered.
Mine was also an automatic but it was always kept in a garage and no rust. It was a fun car to drive but not very fast. I sold it in 88 and purchased a new Honda CRX. I wish In would have kept it. I don’t see many on the road these days.

My brother and I were recently chatting about these cars and then I come to this channel and there is a video on one, what a coincidence! I guess that's a sign that I have to fine one of these to buy! lol :-)

This is my favorite survivor series review. Such a great style. I had a college friend who had an 85 Celica hatchback in 1987, it was bigger and had sharper lines than this 77. Both are classic vehicles. Appreciate the stroll down memory lane Zack.

I always liked these. I had a summer job at a parking lot in Virginia Beach, VA in the eighties, and I got see every kind of car that was on the road back then. I always thought back then that I would have loved to have one of these Celicas, but I had no money then, and had to get whatever I could get the best deal on. I ended up with a 1977 Olds Omega hatchback through the end of high school and college that was, I must admit, a pretty good, reliable car.
It's sad that you just _don't_ see these anywhere anymore. I seem to see a first generation Mustang about once a month pretty reliably, and I see a variety of old muscle cars, with the '69 and '70 Chevelle's probably being the next most common. First gen Camaros turn up a lot, and then a variety of others. I have a 1963 Studebaker Avanti myself. I even saw a _Chevette_ on the road earlier this year (and who the hell preserved those?). But you just never see these old Japanese cars. They didn't get the love the old muscle cars did, and their owners didn't preserve them.

What a fantastic example of this generation of the Celica. When I was out of high school and going away to college, my parents bought me a 1978 Toyota Corolla SR5 Sport Coupe. I learned how to drive a stick shift on that car. That was a decent enough car and very reliable, though I did prefer the styling of this Celica GT Liftback better. But I was still appreciative of the Corolla Sport Coupe since it was a gift.

I saw one of those in the Toyota dealership in Prince George when I was a kid. It was a Supra, it looked like that one and I tried so hard to get Dad to buy it instead of the Corona he bought. Heavily inspired by the Mustang.

One of the best things about the Celica is that it was an economy car that had great body lines and was full featured. You got all the great features and great economy, style and reliable. Other cars of the era were very boxy and no features. During the OPEC oil embargo, everyone wanted an economy car without it looking dorky. I've had 3 Celicas and kept the RA20 1971.

Had a 76 coupe while I was in university in the 80s. The fenders were rotted through at the top, but it was solid otherwise. I swapped the factory carb for a Weber, which absolutely transformed the driveability. Sold it because I couldn’t afford to fix it, but I sure wish I had it back today.

I had a ‘74 (I believe) 5 spd. I bought it as a winter beater. It was a fun car for what it was. Had Porsche-like fan/vent pull controls. When I’d plug in the block heater the whole car would give a shock wherever u touched metal lol. Engine went in the spring so sold it for scrap. Was a neat beater while I had it

Tons of reliability for the Celica. My family had a cooper tone looking one with 140k miles, eventually was stolen but yeah great car. Love the way the hood open forward, i have to assume it could be difficult to find parts for it. Amazing that the interior is immaculate.

I had the 77 GT in silver , 5speed, with louvers on rear window. $4900 brand new.. I had same wheels with spokes and one inch wider stance.. That was the look in CA in the 70s. Turned heads every where I went. Louvers essential in hot weather.. Drove from Riverside, CA to NYC round trip 4x. Finally move back to NY. After first winter corrosion began to show around wheel wells. Still my favorite car. 20R engine, RWD. Good candidate for turbocharger. Also smoothest changing 5 speed. Regret getting rid of it at 145k miles.

We had a silver one just like this one but had it painted starburst metallic blue when it faded by the 1990s. I wanted to keep it so bad but my husband insisted on selling it and getting a minivan when our fourth child was born. We had put a third seatbelt in the back seat. Sold it in 1993. Five speed manual. Funny thing that now we have a 2005 Mustang that looks so much like my old Corolla, even to the silver paint. Different husband after my first one died and the mustang will not be sold. Sure miss my Celica....

I worked in auto body shop for 25 years. I actually took it in vocational class in High School (class of 84). My first job our of school was a Gm Dealership.......anyhow at 3:51 you can see the blue overspray around the window rubber. That is very piss poor masking job!
I would be dubious about other shortcuts the body shop did on the repaint. I would definitely check for improperly done patch panels and for over thick body filler repairs.

It has a hint of a vintage Aston Martin, especially from the front.

My 77 Celica was a 5 speed. White. Cost $5500 OTD. Hated that I sold it to a kid, who promptly went out and totaled it.
