  • The amps and volts of a solar panel array can be affected by how the individual solar panels are wired together. This video is going to teach you how the wiring of a solar panel array affects it's voltage and amperage. The key takeaway to know is that 'Solar Panels in Series Adds their volts together' and 'Solar Panels wired in Parallel adds their amps together.'

  • @matthewjswider
    @matthewjswider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The only confusing thing about all of this is which one is best to charge your batteries? When living in the van, you’re using amps, and concerned with how many AH your bank has. Do you want to push the most amps into the battery, or the most volts into the battery? Nobody bothers to tell you which is actually preferred or which will charge your batteries to full faster. Could you please cover this?!

    • @Thunderst0rn
      @Thunderst0rn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Howmuch power is pushed in the battery does not depend on the series or parallel configuration. Higher voltage (more in series) means lower Amps for fhe same total power, thus smaller gauge wires, but more expensive charge controllers as he explains. You can calculate the amount of current into the battery by the power of the solar array (as you saw in this video all configurations with 4 panels had 400W) by rhe nominal battery voltage. Cheers!

    • @enki2gold
      @enki2gold 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      With series and mppt combo you get the max output of your panels with the added benefit of smaller wires. Higher voltage systems give you more of a return on investment. In my opinion.

      @matthewjswider You want more Amps for charging! You only want your volts to be slightly higher than the battery you’re charging! If you have a 12v battery, you want a max of 13-14volts and between 3-40amps for charging, 3amp is slow charge, 10 amps is fast charge, and 40amps is rapid charge. Since most solar panels produce between 12-24volts, the charge controller sorts out the power differences and turns it into 13-14volts for charging. The closer you can get your solar panels to naturally putting out 14v and 10amps the less work your charge controller has to do and more efficient your system is

    The information I needed in a clear understandable format. And points to my MPPT controller wanting/needing more voltage to operate more effectively. My challenge now becomes how to hook up panels in series that have the 2 pin SAE connectors. Without soldering wires or adding lots of adapters. Sure don't want to buy all new panels. Will run a scaled down experiment with a small number of adapters, testing the real world application of my series and parallel options before deciding on a final setup.

    Thankyou . This cleared up a lot. Im building a off grid house system 240 volt . In Idaho so i want to use the most panel as possible for the bad days of solar.

    This is the best solar channel I have found.. Now I know how to maximize my victron 100/50 mppt.. Running 400 watts of solar to it nowbut about to add 600 watts more to it.. Thanks so much..

    • @EXPLORISTlife
      @EXPLORISTlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! :) Keep in mind that the "50" part of the 100/50 is referring to the charge controller OUTPUT amps. Not the input amps. 1000 amps pushed into a 12V battery bank will be somewhere in the 83 amps range; so the 100/50 will be a bit underpowered for that many watts.

      EXPLORIST life - DIY Campers thanks i had that mixed up.. So it looks as if i can only hook up 700 watts of panels into it. Can You run 2 charge controllers on one 8 battery 12 v bank or would it be better to split the bank and controllers and have 2 separate solar arrays? thanks

    • @EXPLORISTlife
      @EXPLORISTlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just knowing what you've described, I'd recommend 2 charge controllers if they array warrants it feeding 1 battery bank.

    Hi Nate - I love your videos! You are my 'go to' for anything electrical in the van we're building, and we're going to use your diagrams and the Amazon links so we get exactly what we need. SUPER helpful. Thanks so much. One question: I may be using your calculator incorrectly, but I'm using 200W solar panels that have a maximum voltage output of 68.7V. When I put in all the other values in your calculator, it tells me the Amp output is 16 amps per panel. This seems high, and the specs of my panel say maximum current is 3.59 Amp per panel. Google says amps = watts/volts, so I was expecting it to be under 3 amps per panel. Why does your calculator show 16 amps (and it doesn't change if I change my Voltage, which doesn't seem right). Help!

    Thank you so much for what you do and for sharing I wish I had seen this video before I attempted to wire my solar array myself as I thought I was doing it right it was incorrectly wired for over a year and then suddenly last week at blew my 150 volt Flex Max 80 overcurrent I have the sense learn to rewire it correctly and it's done but now I have to figure out how to get my Flex Mac 80 repaired this video really helps cement the foundation of learning the math behind wiring thank you so very much

    Hi, Nate, I'm Noel.
    Great vid series man, thanks a heap, from Australia (a very sunny place!!)
    I'm wiring up a 1050Watt system (3 x 350 W) on the roof of my Toyota Coaster bus/motorhome, so it seems I have no option but to go series wiring (because of the odd number of panels... did I get that bit right?) and wear the cost of the more expensive controller unit. Aaaah well... such is life (on the road)! But think of all that free rent!!!
    She'll also be running on deep frier oil. Australia's a BIIIIIIG land! And we love our fish'n'chips. Friers are cookin' from one end to the other.... and people are generous.
    The go-to oil here in OZ is Cottonseed... excellent bio-fuel.
    Thanks again, Nate. Very helpful, mate.

    Thank you for simplicity in your explanation. In the large parallel array, for a house installation, how would you determine the circuit breaker size before the inverter?

    • @EXPLORISTlife
      @EXPLORISTlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are connecting solar panels to some kind of grid-tied inverter, or something... that's a bit out of my expertise. But, if you are connecting the solar array to a charge controller like I have in all of my wiring diagrams at www.explorist.life/solarwiringdiagrams, this video should answer that question: th-cam.com/video/HOXnWXvLXko/w-d-xo.html

    Hey, super Neuro divergent brain here. I was super confused at first on how to calculate your volts and amps when wiring in both parallel and series at the same time.
    But I realized that it’s a lot more simple than you explained it, or at least, that’s how it seems to me. Essentially, you just take the volts and amps of one singular solar panel times the number of sections that you have.
    It doesn’t matter how many panels are in each section. It only matters how many sections you have. If you have 6 sections, you times the Amps and volts by 6, if you have 4, you times each of them by 4
