    Congratulations Leonard!!! I love it when someone who puts the time and effort into doing a TH-cam channel for others to enjoy, gets payback and satisfaction that enhances their life. Have fun at the Giro. That is so cool to get to see that in person. Most importantly, enjoy the biking in Italy, again! 👍

    it seems winters are mild . there was no mention of snow ! in montreal, once snow comes, usually in november, it sticks to the ground , freezes and it's over until april.

    We don’t really do winter bikes here in Australia, as there isn’t snow, salted roads etc. However I still get crud all over my bike, but a quick spray with degreaser, and a light hose down and it’s spotless. Every 100km if the weather has been bad, it gets a quick clean with a chain cleaning box to stop it gritting up.
    BTW I run a waxed chain which helps to keep the drivetrain cleaner than with wet lube....

    No mudguards on winter bike??
    Love mudguards
    Love splashing through puddles keeping fairly clean and dry
    Beating the system almost!

  • @paulsymons562
    @paulsymons562 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I'd strongly encourage you to fit some mudguards. They keep the wet and crap from spraying over you and the bike, reduce grit getting in the drivechain and generally make it a more pleasant experience.
    There is also a psychological benefit in that you are more inclined to go out in marginal weather if you know you will be reasonably dry.
    Honestly, they revolutionised my winter riding when I fitted them 3 years ago
    SKS chromoplastics are a pretty good price/quality point.

    • @jollygoodvelo
      @jollygoodvelo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip. I have been thinking a lot about mudguards for this bike.

    • @paulsymons562
      @paulsymons562 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jollygoodvelo I'll admit I resisted for a couple of years but when I finally fitted them my winter mileages went up, I think mainly because I would still go out if it was drizzly or there was standing water whereas I wouldn't with just an ass saver.
      If you get the black Chromoplastics and fit them tight to the wheels they dont even look too bad.

    Coincidentally, I bought an Allez Elite a year ago to as my winter bike! Got it cheaply on an end-of-season sale. It came with a carbon fork and internal cabling. I was told it would accept 28mm tires, alas there is just too little clearance under the fork crown so I have to run a 25 at the front. The shop swapped Ultegra and 105 components onto it from another bike of mine, plus a set of Shimano C24 wheels I had. Clip-on SKS fenders (it also has fender eyelets) to deal with winter road debris. Nice, but as you say a LOT heavier than my "summer" bike, gave me a nice "lift" in the spring.
    I put the components from the Allez onto my "trainer" bike, nice to leave the trainer set up, = minimal fuss if the weather is just too frigid/lousy to ride outdoors.

    Great vid Len - you lucky man ! There’s a lot to be said for having a winter training bike that you really look forward to riding. Three or so years back I built myself a winter bike based on a Dolan Profissio steel frame and Campag Veloce group set and wheels, 25c tyres, slightly wider gearing and full mudguards. Cost around £1250 but it looks nice and doesn’t get absolutely caked in crap on winter rides (and nor do I). It’s a bit retro with shiny components and it’s a bit heavy, but it’s a nice ride. When I get back on my Enigma Etape for the summer it feels like a sports car ! One thing I would say is try and and get your winter and summer sets ups as similar as possible in terms of geometry otherwise aches and pains could result. Happy winter riding friends 😎

    It's always good to give a bike new life. I'm glad it works.
    It never would have occurred to me to use Altus M310 on a road bike. But, the cable pull is the same as for road at 9 speed and below, so I am sure it works. And one should never question success.

    Leonard, why someone would want a « Winter bike » in England? Or maybe the better question is how are the Englands winters like for you guys? (And girls!) You Guys have snow on the roads? If yes whats the amount of snow (or not!) you are having out there? This Frogs from Quebec Canada, and no need to explain why our summer bikes are in hibernation for 7 to 8 months every years! Tks in advance for all replies! ;-)

      Hi
      In the UK we do not have much snow but do have a lot of overnight frost. Our local authorities spread tons of grit salt to keep the roads frost free. I am sure other cyclists would agree with me that grit salt ruins your drive mechanisms and also your nice expensive rims. Best to have a cheaper bike so it does not matter so much.

      @@tryan137 Tks Terry, did not know England needed that nasty road salt like we need here on Canadians roads!! This explains why someone would want a winter bike, summer bike, also a spring bike, and why not a fall bike too! Yes indeed, like womens have gazilions pair of shoes, purses, and handbags to color match their outfits we bikers do have(need) all sorts of bikes too! Mouhaha!!

      We don’t have snow all that often but it’s usually very wet and windy which am be worse than snow in a strange way.

    Shimano Deore. Great budget hubs, especially for winter. The story goes many years ago, when Shimano were developing the Deore group sets, they misspelt or misunderstood how it should be written. If you look at the original logos and art work for Deore, it was an animation of a dear. The marketing department got the spelling wrong and everything was produced and developed before it was too late. “Deore”should have been “Deer”. The first XT group was often referred to as “Deerhead”

      Isn’t that similar to the Mitsubishi Starion? Could be an urban myth, a bit like the one about the fact that Pajero, another Mitsubishi car, apparently means something rude in Spanish.

    Very excited for you and waiting for the next adventure to be posted!
    My Colnago “gravel bike” serves as my “winter bike” also! I decided to go with SPD for all my bikes rather than Look for the road bike and SPD for the gravel. One of my fellow riders has a Pinarello Dogma! A very nice ride!

      I went to get some fitted on my Specialized and they told me there wasn’t enough clearance through the brake calipers. Sadly, it looks like the Specialized was not designed to take them.
