This show was a treasure. I love watching these and ONCE AGAIN, thank you for posting these. To think DVD is STILL kicking and so is, as far as I know, the actress who ;played Millie (my bad, I just checked and she died seven years ago but at a very elderly age), is amazing. DVD was the epitome or a very healthy person who was gifted with the genetics (lean as possibly, well, possible) and BRAINS to realize alcohol was killing him seventy years ago so he quit.
@dyates6380 True, it's only a SCRIPT. But there is also a principle involved. Hollywood has *greatly* affected the way we think. So we make comments about our lifestyles, which have heavily been influenced by television in our way of thinking and day-to-day living. _TH-cam_ opens the door for dialogue on certain issues.
I get sad (or morose, as Rob might say 😊 ) , when I see this great cast knowing that outside of DVD and Larry Mathews they are all gone. 😢 I still can't believe Mary Tyler Moore is no longer with us. ❤
I know. I still watch MTM because I got raised on her and DVD, the good old days of Nick at Nite. I feel like she was almost my mother since I got raised by the tv like so many 80’s babies. I still quote both of those shows at least once a day.
At times yes, but at times he could also be at least a decent friend. He doesn’t have a lot of self-awareness. I think he genuinely didn’t consider the fact that he was making fun of Rob’s livelihood because to be fair it’s an unusual livelihood. I think he actually thought Rob was enjoying being teased and didn’t realize how far he was going until it was pointed out to him. But in contrast keep in mind that he provides all dental work to the Petrie family at cost and doesn’t even charge for his time. He also gave up his practice and started completely over in his career just so he and Millie could move to be near Rob and Laura. Yes, he’s immature. Yes, he is a bit selfish and extremely out of touch with how inappropriate his behavior is. And yes, if the Laura, Millie, Rob, Jerry group he tends to take the most and give the least. But that doesn’t mean in his own way that he isn’t being the best friend he knows how to be with the skill set that he has. It makes him a more realistic, layered character. But while he may suck at a lot of the surface stuff, when the chips are down and it really counts he tends to be a good friend in the moments that matter the most.
Interestingly, there are so many episodes that illustrate how Jerry was such a toxic friend; starting from the first season. The writers continued that dynamic throughout the entire series. Very sophisticated.
Because with the change from Tuesday night to Wednesdays in January 1962, Carl, Sheldon and Danny wanted a shorter opening title, so that viewers wouldn't be tempted to change the channel [Dick was opposite "PERRY COMO'S KRAFT MUSIC HALL" on NBC and ABC's "HAWAIIAN EYE" at the time].
Ann Guilbert is pregnant in this season but they never mention it in the story. You can tell she's hiding a belly with her wardrobe in this episode. She said she worked up until her 8th month.
How wonderful would it be if they produced shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show in today's often humorless "Woke" America? I was listening to a 1946 episode of the radio show 'The Great Gildersleeve' today. Their sponsor was Kraft Foods Company, and during the commercial, the founder, Mr. Kraft, spoke about "The Miracles of Jesus Christ." It is heartbreaking that in today's America, it is almost guaranteed that you will hear of the virtues of various sins rather than those of Christianity. May God Forgive us.
It’s no wonder Laura was so dramatic…she was married to a dramatic man! Look at how loud he gets when he steps on one of Richie’s toys (which is actually quite often). 😅
That trip might have been planned but the dessert landing on Jerry's face seemed to shock everybody into mirth including, Rob if you observe his (and everybody's) reaction. Absolutely brilliant comedy timing! Still looking for the ending 5 mins of the amazing 'the curiosity of a woman/wife'
16:00 If I saw Laura crying like that even my first instinct would be to assume the worst. It's easy to see how it looks worse than it is. It's normal, though. I know many people whose first reaction to any kind of injury is to cry, more out of anger especially when it comes from a spouse (even if it's accidental).
Don't forget shock too. I remember when I slammed my hand in the car door, the pain didn't settle in right away, but I immediately started bawling from shock.
Ann Morgan Gilbert was pregnant in real life during the first season. I agree that on the show this would be their third child. They have a daughter named Ellen and a son Freddie who is Ritchie's age.
They never mentioned having a third child, though, only "Ellen" and "Freddie." Anne Morgan-Guilbert was pregnant, but they were trying to hide it as much as possible.
I was wondering about that get up she was in. It looked like some sort of thermal suit. I guessed she was pregnant but had no idea about that outfit. @@jb6712
True!!I😢l saw an episode of Carol Burnett Show with Dick Van Dyke in the 70's.He was so much less handsome then (due to styles)than here.I had such a huge crush on this clean cut version of him here.❤❤
Because Carl Reiner liked him, they were friends, and Jerry Paris was eventually a director of the show, and his appearances were drastically reduced in number. He also followed the SCRIPTS...nobody was ad libbing any lines, and were stuck with whatever lines they were given.
Only in the part where it’s believable that Rob would’ve punched his wife. 😢 that’s the only part of I Love Lucy I didn’t like, was the underlying story about Ricky’s temper, and how long till you slug me thing Lucy used to say rather often.😮
Happy 98th birthday Dick Van Dyke🎉❤️
Jerry even ribs Laura about her coffee.i loved Millie sugaring his pants lol
@ Marvina Bigby Yay Millie! 👏👍👍♥️
BTW she really was pregnant during the first season.
Millie looked very pretty here.
Aaaah I knew she had to be pregnant ☺️ I was just coming to the comments to ask about that. I love that.
I googled her and she did have a baby born in 1962

I was stunned to know both DVD and MTM were alcoholics during these golden years.
Jerry deserved it. There is a point where jokes go too far, and he definitely crossed that point.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!! It's a SCRIPT from a television show from the sixties. Please, stop it. 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆!!!!!

Sometimes a joke is not just a joke Sometimes there's truth behind your words.
The singing message was hilarious.
Yeah, that was Frank Adamo, Dick's personal assistant and body double. He has small parts from time to time.
I would NOT have tipped!
I agree with Millie. Joking around is one thing, but they can be hurtful if they get out of hand.
Yea, he just wouldn't stop even when the cop was there.
Jerry Paris and Anne Guilbert reminded me a real married couple. They had great chemistry.
This is like one of the best shows ever
Jerry can dish it out but can't take it
Really looks like Ann Guillbert broke character at the end, her reaction to the pie -in-the-face is wonderful and genuine.
Was Ann (not milllie) pregnant when they shot this? That outfit @16:30 looks like they are trying to hide something.
Absolutely:-).
You tell a lie often enough, it begins to sound like the truth.
If you can't say anything good, say nothing at all! Words to live by!
Ok Thumper! LOL.
Jerry deserved that 👏

Laura really likes to make coffee 🤣
And no one ever drinks it

“Get off my chest!” The scene where Jerry attacks him cracks me up! 😂😂😂

This here is a good lesson that some Jokes can hurt people.
Jerry was a crummy friend.
I think that may have been the point of the show. Showing how people can be an ass can not only be funny, it can be instructive.

Have always thought Jerry was tall, dark and handsome. 😍
…and a great actor!!!
Eww
Jerry may have been a dentist but he was a wannabe expert psychologist - he plays the "psychologicsl analysis" bit in a few episodes.
Isn't it fun to set the play-back settings on slow-mo .25 and rewatch scenes....especially the pie-in-the-face scene!
21:17 that one line made me think “I think Jerry seems to understand what he did was wrong…”
Interestingly, there are so many episodes that illustrate how Jerry was such a toxic friend; starting from the first season. The writers continued that dynamic throughout the entire series. Very sophisticated.
When "Breaking Balls" you need to know how to read the room.
Really bad camera angle on the Laura nose hit. Too obvious 8 inches away.
I wonder why they changed the intro. First one was really lovely
None of the intros were "lovely." They were all clumsy, clunky, awkward, and had hideous theme music.
I think the new intro was nicer. Nonetheless, one of the best shows of all time!! 😎

One of my fave lines!
Mary Tyler Moore was funnier her more than in her self titled show.
Ann Guilbert is pregnant in this season but they never mention it in the story. You can tell she's hiding a belly with her wardrobe in this episode. She said she worked up until her 8th month.

Honestly, I think the only reason I like this episode is purely because of the ending. 🤷♀️

Seems like Jerry was Rob's frenemy. Jerry cleverly dusguises hostility with attempts at humour. He isn't fooling anyone.
Carl Reiner wrote this show. Kinda makes you wonder if he didn't do this and got punched because of it.
I liked Jerry... always thought he was funny...
Jerry always irritated me, even as a child. There is nothing likable about him.
Millie was expecting again that would make the third Helper child
Ann Morgan Gilbert was pregnant in real life during the first season. I agree that on the show this would be their third child. They have a daughter named Ellen and a son Freddie who is Ritchie's age.
@@chereecargill355 They mentioned another daughter named Patty in the episode where Jerry and Rob go skiing.

15:24 - There's a motivation here. If Rob actually punched Laura in the nose, that would have hurt so bad.
Play it in slo motion. Rob missed Laura`s nose by at least five inches.

Why is Jerry wearing rob's sweater
I noticed that, too!:-)
I don't understand why they kept Jerry on the show. He was SOOO annoying!
The man who played him was the director.
Hes one of my favorite characters so naturally i think your comment is rotten 😎
Normally he's ok except for 1 or two episodes, especially this one.
Because Carl Reiner liked him, they were friends, and Jerry Paris was eventually a director of the show, and his appearances were drastically reduced in number. He also followed the SCRIPTS...nobody was ad libbing any lines, and were stuck with whatever lines they were given.
He directed many many episodes. His playing Jerry Helper was just a side thing.
The Helper house and the Petrie house are supposed to be identical but reversed. Sure didn't look like that to me.
I don't think they wrote that story line yet. Because although that story takes place in the past, it was told as a flashback from a later season.
The funny ending was cut off

Never mind the Alan Brady Show, this episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show's the clinker.
This show has not aged well.
Especially with the heaping mounds of sugar Richie piled onto his cereal....and Laura just lets him eat it. LOL
Did they even know about that yet? It was late into the 70 before they squeezed all the sugar out of the cereals. Maybe even 1980. @@Sharon-yp1ci
