- BREAKING DOWN The Indiana Fever's ATROCIOUS Perimeter Defense. The Indiana Fever lost a winnable game against the Las Vegas Aces. Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell had spectacular offensive performances, but it was not enough to cover for their mistakes on defense. Because of the ATROCIOUS perimeter defense, Kelsey Plum had a career night, tallying 34 points and 6 threes. What was wrong with the perimeter defense? In this video, I break it down.

I'm a Fever fan in Ukraine and just wanted to say thank you for your videos. I often see that the Fever have struggles, but I don't know enough about the mechanics of the game to know why. You definitely help me understand where the team needs to improve. Thanks again for your coverage of the team and best wishes for your continued channel and youtube growth.
Adjustments are the coach's job not for players to figure out.
Clark still only took 12 shots. She's not shooting nearly enough to establish a rhythm and develop her confidence. Shooters shoot. It's up Sides to draw more stuff up for her.
More or less what Kelsey Plum said after the game ironically. Plum who only scored 2 points in the game before. Basically said she wasn't going to stop shooting even on days she's shooting a bad percentage.
I think when CC is cold, she stops shooting and concentrates on feeding everyone else. I think her legs are tired, she's normally close to a 40% 3 point shooter and has been stone cold the last couple of games. After the Olympic break and some rest, I think she'll be hitting those 3's again.
I think they're learning on the fly, and given the short turnaround from getting drafted to immediately having the toughest schedule to start out the sesson, I think they're doing well. They're battling the Sky for the last playoff spot. And yes, Caitlin looks tired. Hopefully the Olympic break will give her some rest and more time to practice. @@stevehardwick7285
Everyone on the Fever looked "off" last night. Screens were horrible again, and there was so much more they didn't do effectively. Thanks for breaking this down. There is not just one thing to pinpoint because so much looked wrong last night.
The Fever started the game as though they had no memory of how well their “if the shot isn’t there, return the ball to cc” worked against the Mercury.
The Fever’s “game” devolved into a “split offense, with cc feeding Smith and Temi good passes and them both missing the shots. Boston was generally productive. Mitchell was off playing her “Mitchell offense”.
Lucky for the Fever, Mitchell and Boston kept them in the game until about midway in the 4th.
Instead, they were the same old “cc feed, catch, shoot and miss, until the defense takes the ball away”.
Or, “cc feed, catch and dribble in circles, then pass… but, not back to cc”.
There was no offensive flow for the Fever and their defense
was simply nonexistent.
Cc couldn’t get her shots to fall, but her 1st half was pretty balanced with 4 rebs and 5 assists. The 2nd half, she doubled her assists to 11 and added 2 rebs.
Sides failed her team and the team failed themselves.

It was a nice refreshment to see a BB game that was about PLAYING BALL. No body checks, nobody smacking anybody in the face, no arms around the neck. Nice, good clean basketball. Fast paced, lots of running, lots of shooting (even though the ball just wouldn't go in for Indiana). Wish every WNBA game was like that.

Hell no!! They didn't create any plays for CC! Sides is full of shit! Sides has done everything possible to change CC as a scorer, She's way over her head as a WNBA coach. Mitchell has no issues shooting. CC has to start playing like she did in college. No more nice girl!!
i figured out what sides issue is, she's a power basketball coach who usually does not like run and gun ball. so for the last 2-3 years Boston, melissa, that new foreign chick all big butt slow girls they wanted. They didn't want cc or fengbengles running self, literally ONLY chose her for views, likes clicks ad seats. She was not and is not part of sides plans. she has no idea how to even coach the girl.
Basically they need a new coach because sides is so not creative she cant switch from power ball to run and gun ball. A new roster w tall runners like temi w soft hands and good feet. so that why it seems like sides is sabotaging. she isnt fam shes literally pulling.a BIDEN :)
Actually Sides was running sets for CC. It doesn’t matter what you draw up if your not working to get open off picks & screens. CC wants the ball handed to her instead of physically going to get it. Jackie Young had her in a straight jacket last night!
Clark is playing like she did in college. The difference is that her Iowa teammates understood how to move the ball and knock down open shots.
Clark had a green light at Iowa as well. That Chicago game clearly shown that Caitlin does not have the freedom that she had at Iowa. Clark also had team mates at Iowa who didn't drop her passes, and also made plays when their opponents double teamed her. Lisa Bludar's offense revolved around Caitlin Clark at all times. That's why Caitlin had such high scoring along with high assists to match. The Fever really need that off season to make things work. One, so Clark can put on some weight and be more fit for the pros. And two, so they can actually run an offense that revolves around their point. Mitchell is absolutely an outside threat. Boston is an inside threat as well. There's no reason why this offense shouldn't be firing on all cylinders just like the Iowa Hawkeyes did. But really, they need those practices to all get in sync with each other
So the Fever has been cooked twice in the last few games by elite guards (Jewel and Plum) and they waived Celeste Taylor. The coach and the GM are geniuses 😅😅😅
Fagbenle has an injured thumb which is affecting her shooting.
CC has to add to her offensive game. Floaters, mid-range, aggressively attacking the paint to get layups or get to the line. That will help her put points on the board when she's cold from 3. The Fever suck defensively they can't afford to also suck on offense. Side also has has to run plays for her and her teammates need to pass the damn ball. Mitchell averages 1.8 assist as guard, thats terrible.
She had mostly paint points. She's just not confident or strong enough to follow through.
Yes right now she is too easy to gaurd. Jackie young was actually overplaying when CC was in the paint just waiting for her to come off the screen. She has to get a better scoring bag. Her 3pt percentage is not good at all.

I am sure she is super tired. And, you gotta find a way to get through it. Most of these ladies play pretty much year round. Candace Parker won and NCAA championship, then had to attend the draft the very next DAY. Then less than a month later, boom let's play. 😅😅
Everybody is tired. I think the much lower 3% is about more than her being tired. She's obviously had the top defender from the other team on her most nights, for one. That will continue! So, it's imperative that she adds to her offensive game. The team could set better screens for sure, but if she's truly a superstar she's going to need to tighten up her handle and get places with it against elite perimeter defenders.

If the Fever can get a 3 guard/forward that can defend and shoot a little, they would be one of the top teams in the league. I think CC should have had at least 14 asst. would like to see you break down her passing from this game.
I second that. and maybe address the question of what her best strategy would be, if she's not shooting well. seems like assisting is her priority. wish the team used her assists better.

I'm learning...thanks for the analysis. When I watch the game, I don't notice why someone is wide open for a shot. It's just painful to see it happen so many times. Maybe the Fever can watch your videos and learn how to play defense since they don't seem to be learning it from the coach. What I do see in the game is an incredible number of missed shots and I just shake my head in dismay as the ball finds a way to miss the net time after time. Also, if a player can't shoot free throws (or much else), it probably makes defending her in the court pretty easy...just foul her if she's wide open for a shot. Such a player should probably not be on the court.
What a debacle, there are rarely any adjustments. I thought we had a chance until the 4th quarter.
CC defense is definitely the weakest part of her game. But the miscommunications, the lack of focus, complete lack of awareness of KP, all of that points to coaching error. Sides is infuriating.
Not to mention they released Kelsie Taylor the defensive player of the year for 2 years in different conferences in college

CC had 15 pts, 12 assists and 9 rebs & 6 TOs on 14 shooting attempts against the Mercury on Sunday, and the Fever won, it's a team win.
But tonight she had 13pts, 11 assists 6 rebs & 6 TOs on 12 shooting attempts.
The same stat line as Sunday.

Mitchell is the worst defender of the guards. Wallace 2nd worst. Part of this is Sides ridiculous defensive sheme. She seems to think team defense can't include guarding a scorer from the logo like how CC is guarded on every.single.possession.

The defense has been bad all season. I thought Sides is supposed to be a defensive coach. I still don’t understand the deal with Celeste Taylor - Sides didn’t play her and then they let her go. She’s an excellent defensive player, something the Fever desperately need. I think that CC too often leaves her player to help out in the paint (or maybe she does it to quickly get the ball and start the transition). Mitchell’s defense was horrendous.
Good video! Mitchell has to average more than 2 assists. She is an awesome player but needs to be more like Clay Thompson rather than Monte Ellis (old Warrior reference). As you have pointed out many times, the coaching appears to be one of the biggest issues. Players do not seem to know where to be or what the priority should be. In this case, perimeter defense needed to be the focus more than the lane. Another issue is the inability of players being able to finish plays. Half of CC's turnovers are the result of her teammates being unable to catch balls that would be the norm in a men's college basketball game. And CC would have had at least 7 more assists if her teammates could make a layup under the basket. Lastly, Smith missing 5 straight free-throws was a killer. Overall, the inexperience of the team and playing in front of large crowds is causing them to be nervous and make blunders on the simple basics. Peace!

Clark is a non issue against good defenses. She needs to develop her game. 30 feet forced shots doesnt cut it in this league.
Another big problem was their horrible team shooting percentage. It does not seem that any of the team can hit a mid range jumper. Smith from the line was about 1 for 7
Outside of Mitchell the Fever were 1-16 on 3's, and only 33% overall. Aces shot over 45%. Defense a big part of that on both sides. Caitlin hardly has any time to shoot while Kelsey Plum stands there all alone taking her time shooting 3's. Same thing that Lloyd did against the Fever and you can bet Ionescu will do it this next game.
Apparently the Fever doesn’t have any coach to coach defense. An overall philosophy, stances, footwork, rotating, leverage. It’s the coaching that is lacking. Clark’s shots are missing short, that’s usually because of tired legs. Clark really needs the coming break.
I agree for the most part, except that they need better defensive personnel and more athleticism when they go into the offseason, perhaps an athletic wing player. Also, Caitlin really needs to get stronger and actually put some effort in on defense rotations and filling the gaps. I know she's being asked to do a lot and she's probably tired, but man her defensive awareness and effort is REALLY not good. I saw at least 10 different occasions during the aces game where she was just completely stationary off ball defense watching the other team try to get a basket. It doesn't matter how good of an offensive player you are if you give up twice on the other end.
I know some CC stans are probably going to take offense to that, but I can see these things with my eyes...

It's funny becuz Sides says they are focusing on defense on practice days. Also, to be fair to Caitlin, i believe she had 5 fouls so she couldnt be too aggressive.
yeah, if you do a breakdown of CC's defensive play, please discuss how she gets so many fouls. is it that she's guarded more carefully? seems like she tries to avoid getting fouls, by guarding from too far back -- does that sound right?

Fever team looked tired and deflated as the game progressed. Defense kept getting worst. It was horrible to watch. Felt like they gave up as the 4th QTR began. You said it and made it clear. No one made it harder for plum. They just left her and gave her space to shoot. Other teams play CC hard on defense but the Fever do not seem to play hard defense on other teams’ stars - specially when they are hot. I don’t know if I am seeing this right but it feels like the Fever also prefer to take stupid shots and waste time dribbling vs taking those 15 ft shoots that presents themselves. Sometimes you have the Fever with opportunity to make shots near the foul line but they dribble further outside, waste time, and end up rushing a worst look from further away.
They actually missed most of those 15 ft shots between Smith/Boston/Wallace and Mitchell.

Is chrissy sides getting paid to dramatically make this team fail or obsessed with certain players to get more minutes.? We all know several players on the bench should get way more playing time. I agree Caitlin is not a good perimeter defensive player right now, that is along with her other teammates. Much of that is coaching! This woman claims in the post game conference that Caitlin Clark needs to shoot 15 shots a game! How do you have the audacity to make that statement?? You have handicapped this brilliant basketball player from playing her game, especially in the 4th quarter. They are not setting simple screens, coming to the ball when she is double teamed & there is an offensive scheme set up by Sides to get other teammates the ball more. It is obvious everybody can see Caitlin is a third option for shooting in crucial moments late in the game & the entirety of it. Crissy sides is intentially taking the spotlight away from the best offensive player in history. Whether it is jealousy or favoritism in her players, she is obviously lying to the media about her schemes & intentions, etc... It is sickening. Caitlin could easily average 24 points, 8 assists & 6 rebounds a game, but Sides is destroying her offensive rhythm. It is common sense, not a conspiracy. Also, Crissy Sides blames Caitlin continuously & never holds herself accountable. Fire her & bring the Legend Lisa Bluder in to coach this team. Or a male coach who is known for his great offensive & defensive mindset. There's is way too much talent on this team! Ughhhh.

Here's all you need to know about Sides. When the Fever got toasted by the liberty in NY, Celeste Taylor who is a rookie, had her whole family at the game. The Fever were out of it, zero chance to win, and shithead Sides never let Celeste into the game. Sides is not only a crumby, incompetent coach, she's a pathetic person.

Seems they were more worried about Young because Plum has been mid a few games. However the disrespect on Plum was paid in full.

Okay playing defense on Kelsey Plum and what about Aja Wilson and Jaquie Young...the problem to defend against Aces is to have consistent defense, you don't know who can take fire...the first half Aja was undefendable, once they tried to defend on her on the paint, they liberated 3pts shooter. Aces were just too much for Fever. However, more and more Fever become a coordinated and consistent team but they still limited against teams like Aces, Liberty, Minesota or Seattle.

The sad thing is that Kelsey Plum doesn't shoot when she's being guarded closely. But that didn't happen. She's thrives on wide open shots and that's all she got. I don't know why Clark is missing so many 3s in the last two games at least. She looked lackadaisical the whole game other than in offensive transition. Smith needs to practice free throw shooting.

Both Mitchell and CC suck at defence. So when u have both of them on the floor and ur offence is not clicking then the other team is gonna have a big lead.

Shooting was awful except from Boston and Mitchell. Smith and Temi couldn't make a layup for their life. If we had an average night 45/35/75 we wouldv'e been 1 point up. ofc things would have gone differently but the point is it was a winnable game and somehow we got a blowout. But yeah terrible defense as well.
Everything good that happens with the Fever involves CC, which is why Sides doesn’t want to draw up plays for her. At this point I really think Sides wants to take the credit for their success instead of using their best asset. That’s why she won’t take full responsibility for the losses. It’s typical narcissistic behavior.

I have watched basketball for many years and I can't remember a worse game than last night's WNBA game. Fever shooting? 23% from the 3-point line, 26% from the field, 51% from the foul line!!. Rolling around on the floor, constant fouling not called, fumbled balls, clueless coaching, player confusion, lack of Fever game strategy. ("physicality" = not knowing how to play). I've honestly seen better junior high school games. This spectacle performed in front of 20+k stunned fans. I don't think I can watch this much more.
The WNBA sucks. Soon CC fans will move on and stop watching because this is not entertaining at all. Both teams suck. Wth was I watching. I can see why people weren’t watching the WNBA.

Good analysis. They suck on D including Clark. Rusty Buckets does a good analysis of what won championships in his recent documentary on why playoff are no longer interesting -- it's great D that wins games.
Right now, Fever are a flawed team that can beat other flawed teams when certain things are going well. Namely, Smith and Boston need to convert on offense and not get dominated because the points in the paint setup everything. They will lose against the better, more balanced teams especially when they can get a tall, athletic guard or forward to harass CC. Game was lost with all the easy missed layups and snowballed into lots of lost rebounds and just tired defense not able to contest the open 3s.
That play @6:55 was one of the worst plays of the game. Temi tips it exactly where she want torwards two Fever players and Wilson just out hustles them to the ball which left the defense in disarray.
Before you give your analyses, it would be nice if you gave the stats of the players for that game.

I often wonder what the Fever's plan is on defense, because it often looks like they don't have one. The team had a really bad night shooting, not sure that was all the Aces defense though. They got some good looks.
Maybe they should switch to zone defense instead one on one.

You’re tripping. Kelsey Mitchell cares about 1 thing- Kelsey Mitchell. She constantly tries to be the star and puts her numbers before the teams. She cannot stand being a role player and that’d be fine if she was good enough to be a franchise player, but, she’s not. Massive defensive liability game after game. The sooner the Fever get ride of Sides, her Atlanta Leftovers, and Ms ISO Mitchell, the better. Until then, we’ll be forced to watch game after game as the Fever coaches and players try to make everyone but Caitlin the star.

She had a baby. I think that takes a lot out of a woman, in general, for awhile. She might have been better off taking a break for this season, depending on her contract, finances of course.
