Being the massive James Bond fan, its amazing how its essentially a James Bond game without the license. The attention to detail is outstanding. I love everything about it. This is one of the coolest arcade games of all time.
The thing that always annoyed me was that I could never finish the first two stages! I was absolutely in love with the idea of this game as a 7 year old but I was totally flummoxed by the fact that it was a traditional arcade game that was hard as Hell. Oh well, at least I can enjoy it retroactively.
i like how the real james bond iconic villains appear in this "no licence to copy" game that doesn t have the copyrights. The Jaws from roger moore 007 movies and the Oddjob from sean connery movie "Goldfinger"
I was just trying to remember the name of this game the other day. This was a game that always attracted me to the cabinet as a kid and one that captured my imagination. This game should have been combined with spy Hunter.
Watching this I just figured the player was opposed to shooting animals in the game if it could be avoided, and only in the last level I realized the kicks were doing double damage!
Several references from Data East's other arcade games made cameo appearances in Sly Spy. A poster showing Chelnov (a.k.a. Atomic Runner) can be seen at the beginning of Stage 3, the logo for the aforementioned Bad Dudes can be seen at the end of Stage 3, and a poster showing Karnov can be seen at the beginning of Stage 5. In the 1990 movie RoboCop 2, officer Duffy gets pushed by RoboCop into a Bad Dudes arcade cabinet, but with Sly Spy built into it. Along with a few other Data East arcade games, they appeared in the film due to licensing and advertising agreements between Orion Pictures, Data East and Ocean Software after the release of two video games based on the RoboCop property.
There's Robocop's decapitated body at the beginning of the last level as well. I read the comments to see the context. You gave me the context but I'm surprised you missed Robocop himself laying on the floor without a head. wires hanging out.
The first time I played this game was back in Arizona when I was 9 years old. Fast Forward to today, I still love this game just as I loved it when I was a kid. Thank you for posting this 1cc playthrough, it brings back good memories.
yeah, it definitely is a great soundtrack and the last level is great as you said. I like the music in the level 2 section where you're on the motorcycle, it sounds old time-y and fits with the Bond motif nicely.
Players control the secret agent name Sly Spy through eight different stages. Some stages have their own gameplay. In the first part of the first stage, players shoot enemies horizontally while sky-diving. The second half of the first, third, fifth, sixth and eighth stages are played in a run and gun format similar to Namco's Rolling Thunder and its sequels, but it lacks the ability to jump between the top and bottom floors while grabbing rails. Also, when out of ammo or attacked by a boss with one hit, Sly Spy drops his firearm while the game becomes a beat' em up in 2D platform manner, much like similar to the 1985 Konami side-scrolling arcade game Rush'n Attack, the 1984 Irem side-scrolling beat-'em-up Kung Fu Master, the 1987 Sega side-scrolling arcade game Shinobi, and the 1988 Data East's own arcade games Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja and RoboCop. Players can make Sly Spy do three different kicks: high kicks, low kicks and jump kicks. The second stage shows Sly Spy riding on his motorcycle with a built-in machine gun, which makes this stage a combination of run-and-gun and vehicular combat game formats, much like Irem's Moon Patrol. The fourth and seventh stages are in marine-based, side-scrolling shooter format. Minor enemies will drop several different items when defeated, such as extra ammo, cans of Coca-Cola-esque soda and machine guns. Sometimes, enemies will drop a jetpack on land or a DPV while underwater to make transportation easier. Enemies also drop parts of the ultimate weapon in the game called the Golden Gun, which is based on the weapon of the same name from the novel/film titled The Man with the Golden Gun; however, instead of shooting Golden Bullets like in the James Bond series, Sly Spy's version functions nearly the same way as the Cobra Gun in Data East's 1988 RoboCop arcade game and the Heavy Barrel energy cannon from the arcade game of the same name. It is also shaped like a rifle instead of a pistol; however, when the Golden Gun is equipped along with either the motorcycle or a DPV, their built-in firearms will shoot the same energy bolts shot from the Golden Gun itself.
omg after searching for like 20yrs finally found similar game.. 😱😱😱 it was probably on nes/snes game. same type of spy run and gun game. in between stage you can drive a bumble bee car in desert..
The boss fight at 9:40 reminds me of a line from the Frantics' "Last Will and Temperament": "And to my cat, Mittens, I bequeath my vast, entire BOOT TO THE HEAD!"
I absolutely love that BOOT TO THE HEAD skit! I wish I made this connection when I was playing...thanks for the laugh, going to search for a youtube video of it now (while I cover my head). 😆

nice, great price for all those games! 👍 Sly Spy shares some similarities with Rolling Thunder but thankfully Sly Spy is more forgiving overall. Thanks for commenting! 💪
This was originally going to be a Bond game, but they lost the license and had to change things. 777 was obviously supposed to be 007, the US flag parachute was meant to be the famous Union Flag parachute, the villains are obviously Bond-alikes, the power-up is called Golden Gun for god's sake!
@@Pete_Hahn There are at least 2 stages with alternate paths that can be accessed via the Jetpack. Makes it a bit easier to construct the golden gun. There are probably more I haven't found!

So hard to play this game without taking a bunch of hits. Almost need an invincibility code to even play this game, unless if you like to pay about $10 dollars worth of quarters to put into this arcade machine? This game is basically a James Bond game. I am surprised that the owners of the James Bond series did not say something about this game? Jaws, Odd Job, and The Golden Gun are in this game. All of which are a part of the James Bond series. Even Sly Spy himself looks just like Sean Connery. . Even the underwater scuba-gear levels of this game are from Thunderball movie. Even at the end of the game with the last boss is a reference to Goldfinger when Bond is strapped down to the table with the laser getting ready to slice him in half.
@@Pete_Hahn This is why Data East went out of business on June 25, 2003. Tactron Corporation might do this sequel Sly Spy Lady (USA) Secret Agent Woman (Japan) even if Tetsuo Fukuda negotiates this idea I came up with.

I wonder if anyone ever figured out what the ending was trying to say. Whatever things you supposedly missed, it takes more than a 1CC no-death run to get them. Of course it's entirely possible that the ending text is just BS nonsense but who knows.
I think the president was referring to the women as the "few things" that were missed, which are shown in the picture immediately following him saying it...but I'm not certain. Oh well! :)
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean? Some enemies can knock the gun from your hand like the boss at 5:00 in the video. Also, some enemies might be easier to beat without the gun, such as the tiger boss.
I agree! From a gameplay perspective it feels like a slight upgrade because your Agent is more mobile and can jump higher, but levels are laid out in a similar fashion.
