    It also doesn't help that TH-cam artists are doing sketchbook flipthroughs of "perfect" sketchbooks and then acting as they never have sketches that are less than that. This puts a lot of pressure on others that think this is the standard for sketching.

    • @artprof
      @artprof  4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Oh yeah, I guarantee that all of those "perfect" sketchbooks went through tons of edits and fails before reaching that point - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

      Yes, but I'm finding that with this video, too. From where I'm sitting, trying to learn as a beginner, their examples make me want to pack it in and forget about it. They look quite advanced to me. It's very discouraging.
      Like sketching a portrait from the mirror, or any portrait, is an advanced skill. I don't know how to make sense of proportions, and don't have a "mark vocabulary." So these examples seem an odd place to start. Like setting us up for disappointment. There has to be something more foundational to start with . . . this feels a bit like throwing a person who can't read into a room full of books and saying, "Just pick them up and read. Don't worry about it." Uh . . . ok? You bill this as "basic curriculum." It doesn't seem quite basic enough. It feels like you already need to know quite a bit.

      Only if you believe it. I never have believed that these sketchbook showing social media artist are perfect or that it comes easy to them or that they don’t make sad art too. Why do you all believe that? What is the evidence you are looking at compared to what I am looking at?

      @@anahata2009 the thing with self portraits is that it doesn't have to be good! Just look at yourself in the mirror and draw what you see. And what's cool about it is that because it's just you, there's no pressure if it turns out "ugly" or not. It's all about the practice

  • @rouqayam8787

    Also one thing you have to keep in mind when working in your sketchbook, is that you are not obligated to show it to anyone. Don’t draw with the thought that this is what people will see when they open my sketchbook. I think that really pressures people into having to draw masterpieces.

    • @artprof

      So true!! You should always create what you want, when you want-- it should never be a pressure-inducing process :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

    If you dont know what to draw, then learn something new. If you dont want to learn something new then practice a skill. If you dont want to practice then play. if your play is limited by your ability then its time to learn something new. rinse and repeat.

    • @artprof

    I feel inspired by this as a self-taught art person. I thought sketchbooks were always about making the perfect art or having major breakthroughs. It was discouraging. Knowing that it's small steps helps a lot. My sketchbooks are me just doodling, coloring doodles, taping. I tend to focus on the different creation processes but without the focus. It's more like I'm moving and creating which is fulfilling in itself. I do want to improve so I can sell a few pieces though; as I'm not sure my art is appealing to anyone but me maybe and a few family members. lol

    I sketch 3-6 hours everyday the past few months and I want to keep that up for this year too. Sketching is very meditative, very relaxing and letting thoughts go by.
    I draw from all sorts of sources, but I find using video to be my favorite. I can get a bit of 3D feel from it but also can go in my pace. I like drawing creatures (both fantasy and real). Animal documentaries are great for sketching. You're learning from the video and you can capture their behaviors with sketching.

    I really like this. I think it’s good to think this way. If your sketches look good, you haven’t been sketching productively. Being productive in developing your skills is about exploring new territory, which *always* looks terrible. If it looks good, you’ve stayed in your comfort zone and made no progress. A pretty sketchbook isn’t a sketchbook. It’s a finished piece. Finished pieces are nice, but that’s a failure as a sketchbook. The only pretty stuff you should see in there is when you have finally started to get a grip on whatever you were trying to achieve. An ugly sketchbook is a sign you are using it the way you should; to grow as an artist.

      @@artprof Thanks! I have to be honest though. After saying all that, it’s not really a rule. I have a few tiny 3.5 by 5.5 inch Rendr sketchbooks filled with copic drawings of different texture patterns that actually look pretty good, if you like that sort of thing. I mostly use them as a reference for the colors I used.

    MJ Dosey. From my observations many of the best and famous artists had challenges with vision/perception. That is what made their work appear so unique. Especially those who developed "new styles". They were portraying the world how they saw it, and recording those impressions in their work. Never give up!

    Thanks for another useful video for the self taught. I always felt a bit ashamed that my sketch books were a mishmash of scribbles and rubbish, but I realise they are pretty normal and no one has to see them lol. I made the self portrait thing a bit easier for myself, I decided to put my iPad camera on to selfie mode and left it live, so it is like looking in the mirror and very quickly did a 2 min sketch of myself from that live image. It really worked for a ‘painting from life’ practice session, I will try and do this everyday. No excuses 😉

I have books that are many pages of scratch lines because I tried to do something quickly and went to the next page and tried again. They are a mess. I need my sketchbook to let me warm up my unconscious. It's MY sketchbook and not for publication. I can still open a book of scratch lines and remember the sensation of those moments.

    Some examples for self-taught artists would be Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Yoko Ono, Yves Klein, and Jean Michel Basquiat. Salvador Dali maybe, too. He was kicked out of art school. So yes, you can be an amazing, inventive artist without any formal training.
    The process of pursuing your very own path with art is very rewarding and satisfying in itself - in my opinion it doesn't help to get too fixated on fame or financial success, while those are nice to have, of course :)

    There are a lot of self taught artists I think. But if you want famous, Vincent Van Gough and Grandma Moses come to mind. I really like watercolor and have read several books by very successful self taught artists. I’ve read so many though, I don’t remember which ones, which just goes to show, having a degree doesn’t determine success.

    My advice for drawing from Imagination - is to work with visualisation - its quite fun - it is a bit like training your imaginary dreaming ability - and I ended up by studying it and writing a book of it ( in Danish) - because drawing and painting from Imagination comes from deep aesthetic experiencing using all your body to be aware and using all your senses - and training to be focussed on the very moment

    For cronic illness: Freda Kahlo had several handicaps, Google her life is in several documentaries on TH-cam. Another lady that was amazing: Laurel Burch. These ladies are amazing. There is a guy that paints with his feet cause he has no arms: totally amazing he was on Sky Portrait Artist of the year. Work with what you have and let your dreams flow on possibilities. I have some serious creative blocks and health stuff, so I get it but when I do the 10 min(fa-chunking(Rafi was Here)), somehow I feel better even if it paint swatching or just making splat marks with watercolor.

    Do you as artist and teachers have any tips for being constantly tired and chaotic? I have still 1,5 year of high school to go, but I'm slowly preparing my portfolio for (animation) art school already. Sadly, the only time to work on that is after my normal school work, which makes that I'm mostly really tired, my brain is a mess so I'm extremely chaotic and I waste a lot of time...
    I'd be so thankful if you have any advice for me! Also, keep up the amazing stuff you're making!

    • @artprof
      @artprof  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm a college art school student, and I am constantly burned out too! It can be so frustrating to feel unproductive, especially with something you're passionate about. I'd recommend only doing prompts you're really passionate about, that way it won't feel like you're "forcing" yourself to create work. Often I'd start projects because I thought it was what I "should" be doing, and I'd end up with mediocre final projects. As soon as I started doing work I actually wanted to do, it became so much easier! I still get tired sometimes, but it's nowhere near as bad :) This video about artist's block might help out too: th-cam.com/video/po8wG5hfUvc/w-d-xo.html Good luck! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

      Hey! It’s so great you are already thinking about this. Managing your time, health, and workload are such important parts of working in art- especially something as intense as professional animation. I felt a lot like you did in high school- constantly overworked and overwhelmed! If I could go back I would recommend taking your time and working at a pace that lets you feel good about your work, and gives you time to sleep, work on other things, rest, and take breaks. There is no rule that says you have to get into animation school right after high school. If when you graduate you feel like your portfolio isn’t ready you can always spend a year or two working a day job and finishing your portfolio. Your art and your studies will both be better if you can take your time, and also there’s nothing worse than getting into animation school- or even finally graduating college and getting to the workforce- and finding you are too burnt out or injured from overwork to actually do the work you dreamed of! It might seem like one or two years is a very long time to wait before starting on your dreams but trust me, I’m pretty sure when you look back it will seem so short and like it didn’t slow you down at all :) Good luck with your portfolio, I’m sure it will look great!

Maybe this is why I'm sometimes kinda scared about ruining my sketchbook. Should try to sketch more, and then if I like something draw it again but as a final piece? since this was an old vid, I will post down here:
    hello,
    @CalmCuke
    @Mj Dosey
    It's a long TL;DR, but I can guarantee, if you want some insight from someone who has chronic illness, it will be worth your time, and read!!
    I have chronic illness too, that at times, can make it extremely difficult to draw. I have a few things to mention, but it comes down to a basic point that was mentioned in the vid: just draw.As they said, at least sketch everyday for 10mins.... Since we have chronic illnesses, we may not have the energy, or the muscle/joint/tendon movements to draw as much as we like to. We can get very weak for drawing long periods of time. However, even if you feel you can go over 10mins that is fine, but I HIGHLYYY suggest to take at least 15min breaks, every 10mins you draw.
    ....It seems a bit much, but it becomes very, very useful if you want to draw longer. In the middle of drawing breaks, stretch whatever hurts. Not exercises, stretching. Exercises are for long-t strengthening and won't help much short term. Strech your neck all directions, pull only slightly to each side. Or, as far as you can go, but don't push to the point of it being painful. Stand up and stretch your lower back. Move around a little bit, but not to the point of making yourself tired. Stretch your fingers, and hand/wrists the same way, but go only for a few seconds. Any longer can put strain and tension and therefore you'll be taking even more breaks than you'll want to. It can seem like a lot at first. Even I"m still getting used to that routine, but in the long run I'm telling you, it's so worth it!! You'll get used to, and figure out what time (mins/seconds,) in between breaks to stretch, eventually it will become very easy how long you need to do this.
    A bit of background from myself...
    I've had chronic illness for who knows how long now, and I"m 21 and half. So it's taken me so long since I started drawing more seriously, how to make it comparable with my illness, & to not overdo it. It took lots of research, and help from others, including my physical therapy, and orth team, and it does seem like I know what I"m talking about, but I'm still having issues, and get very depressed at times when I can't figure anything out, especially from brain fog block. I don't even call it an artists block anymore, it's truly brain fog, which can also be a link to a chronic illness, I've come to find out from learning.
    >>>I have a personality disorder as well, and only brief I will say, that this, in combination with other mental illnesses I have, but ALSO, a weakened immune system from 11months from heart surgery, can be an insane breakdown and shutdown from art, which did happen to me, and last for almost longer than 2 years. Only now, are I starting to get back into the swing of double downing and practicing extra hard, and in depth with it. So pleeasssee, trust me when I say, I ABSOLUTELY, 100% understand, and get it. It's a true frustration...
    Where I go to for help and advice...
    The past year or 2, I have followed some chronic illness community websites such as ChronicWarriers.com, and a few others on Reddit pages. Those can be very, very helpful, I've heard there are also some on fb, but as always, be wary on fb and it's groups....Bad stuff can be on there and non/misinfo can be on there as well, of course with any socialm that comes with, but especially fb. I'd recommend if vourting on this route, to go more towards forums/groups on Reddit, ChronicWarriors, even Quora.
    They've got some great stuff particular from Quora, when it comes to topics like this. There are tons of people like us on there, much more than you think, and lots are willing to come forward to share experiences and give useful information!! Lots of chronic illness people actually do art lots of the time, and they have given me some wonderful advice. Another website that was of great help to me people & pages that are dedicated to topics like this, from reddit.
    Another thing to note, depending on what type of illness you have, no matter what it may be, I've found the most specific illnesses/diseases that you can get the most help from, will be some Reddit page out there for your specific illness. I find when going to Reddit pages, and not the "generic" illness pages, considering there are a broad spectrum of such, can be very helpful and validating, when going to create posts and asking for advice/help/experiences, even just to rant!!!!
    end notes and comments...
    I hope you guys can see my comment. We need to band us and other like minded individuals together ones that are creative in all sorts of mediums, and create an art chronic illness page on for topics on help and advice for people like us, or even those who are having issues similar as us!!!!! I noticed not many pages are out there specifically for people like us who have a hard and sometimes very difficult time creating art, as common as it may be that ones like us tend to be creative, as said earlier... I hope you guys get better over time, but be patient with yourself during the rough ones, I hate this saying too I know, but it'll be worth it. I'm not coming through the other end yet, but it's starting to look up for me finally, from a long gruelling rcoaster. In all, hope this gives some insight and/or help!!!
    sincerely, Sophie ❤🙏🏽

    Great topics, love the channel! I have a question: When do you decide to paint over a canvas when it seems to fall flat after you finished it months ago. It is like I don't want to waste a canvas on something that didn't work. Once I painted over a face I had almost finished the painting and now I can't finish it at all. I take pictures of everything so I have a record of that piece before I destroyed it(great thing about cell phones is camera!). So I try not to lament over it(Gosh what I have done, it was almost perfect!!!) One artist said, never paint over stuff. Yet, there is the 'you have to create 100 crappy paintings to get to the good ones'. I have a hard time not wanting to separate the good sketches and frame them from the sketch book of doodles. Thank you for posting!

    • @artprof
      @artprof  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We explain in the video that we offer visual journaling as 1 option (out of many) as a means to maintaining a daily sketchbook practice; it's not that visual journaling itself has to be part of the curriculum. For some people, the directive of a daily sketchbook practice might be straightforward and enough for them to go on, whereas other people prefer to have a more specific set of options to choose from, so visual journaling is an example of a specific option we are pointing people to in case they prefer to have that structure in place. Our aim with this curriculum is to provide a broad range of options to suit a broad range of artists. -Prof Lieu

      I just tried the links and they both worked for me, and I tried it twice using an incognito window. Try it again, could be that maybe when you cut and paste maybe a letter was missing. -Prof Lieu

      @@artprof I was trying to download it over mobile, and it kept redirecting. But, when I downloaded it on desktop, it worked. I have no idea why. Thank you for your help, Prof. Lieu!

    I literally gave up art because I couldn't draw a horse from my imagination. I thought that made me a bad artist. I was 20 years old then. Now here I am at 43 wishing I could go back to that moment and tell myself that it didn't make me a bad artist.

    When do you call yourself an artist?

      I personally think if you produce any form of artwork you’re an artist, even if your skills aren’t refined yet :)

    I'm sorry but I'm going to be brutally honest because this is one of my pet peves I hear you'll talking about here. In my opinion photo realism is skillful which I appreciate but I don't consider it to be art. Art in my opinion has to have the element of being interesting in some way. I don't think it's very interesting if you make something by hand that you could have done in a split second with a camera. That's just a skillful but slow copying machine. Now if you use your imagination to change your subject in some way for example wild colors like in fauvism then that could make it interesting enough to make it artistic. Sorry if I ruffled some feathers and It's OK if someone has a different perspective but I would be interested to know why. Thanks!

      At Art Prof, we usually encourage people who are using photorealism to use it purposefully in some kind of way that contributes to the overall concept or narrative of the piece - but we also encourage that for any method of execution! Photorealism is just a tool. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    Non of the links provided in the video directly lead to the daily sketchbook as mentioned in the biodegradable, searching for it on the website is a rollercoaster of wasting time, just gonna use "no offence’ just in case.

      Are you talking about the links in the video description? Because I checked and they all work. When looking on the website, the best way to find what you want is to use the search bar. artprof.org/ -Prof Lieu

    I keep hearing over and over and over and over....that art making is better if it's a daily practice. I disagree. The only things I am willing to do every day are to breathe, drink water and pee. After that, anything goes. I'm disciplined enough to work diligently, sometimes for 15 hours a day, sometimes not at all. My work has been juried into international art to wear exhibits, galleries, books and magazines. If I don't feel like doing my art, I don't do it. Instead, I do something I enjoy or something I need to do to keep my life organized. I am refreshed and rejuvenated after a break and inspiration returns. I feel much better when I've handled something like washing the floor or doing laundry than I feel if I force myself to do artwork on a day when I feel like it's just not what I want or need to focus on. Let's put the forced work = better work myth to rest. It may be beneficial to people who don't mind being drones, but if you're like me and you chafe at routine because it's deadening and interferes with soul felt creativity, then don't do it - and don't feel guilty. Your art improves when you're inspired, not when it becomes drudgery.
