This 70-minute video lesson is part 1 in a series of 3 tutorials exploring an in-depth look at Variations sérieuses, Op.54 by Felix Mendelssohn. This tutorial covers the theme and variations 1-5. Composed in 1841 as part of a project spearheaded by Viennese publisher Pietro Mechetti to raise funds for a statue of Beethoven to be erected in Bonn, Mendelssohn’s contribution of this piece was the first set of variations he had written (he later went on to write two additional sets of variations). This tutorial discusses many areas of focus, including extensive guidance on effective fingering, tips for voicing the melody over the accompaniment, shaping of the melody and how to create long and breathing phrases, tempo and pacing, articulation and the importance of allowing the character of each variation to influence the execution of articulation, strategies for hand alignment, tips and exercises for reducing tension, how to practice efficiently and increase speed, strategies to help with the difficulty of the fugal writing in variation 4, pedaling suggestions, and many other tips to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.
