This 69-minute video lesson is part 3 in a series of 3 tutorials exploring an in-depth look at Variations sérieuses by Felix Mendelssohn. This tutorial covers variation 14 through the end of the piece. At the end of this tutorial, Josh shares a performance of the piece. Composed in 1841 as part of a project spearheaded by Viennese publisher Pietro Mechetti to raise funds for a statue of Beethoven to be erected in Bonn, Mendelssohn’s contribution of this piece was the first set of variations he had written (he later went on to write two additional sets of variations). This tutorial discusses many areas of focus including several strategies for reducing tension in the rapid broken chords and tenths in the 16th and 17th variations, tips for the coda and how to handle the oscillating chords between the hands with more ease, tips for voicing more effectively, how to create long lines and ideas for shaping and interpretation, strategies for accuracy with large jumps, how to increase speed and fluidity, how to create more effective character and textures, pedaling suggestions, and many other tips to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.
