    I'm hilling my corn with the HOSS HIGH ARCH WHEEL HOE.
    "Hilling" is when you throw dirt onto the base of the corn stalks. In doing this, the weeds are suppressed and the soil is mounded up around the bottom of the plant. This gives the stalks more stability in high winds, making it harder for the winds to blow it over.
    The HOSS HIGH ARCH WHEEL HOE makes it a LOT easier. I'm able to completely hill both sides of the corn in ONE pass.
    Thanks for Watching!

    If you put your plow blades on the opposite sides and plow between rows it will do the same thing . Just a thought.

    WOW !!! One week's growth ! I think I would try to make an adapter to extend the plow blades out farther and do one side of each row by walking in-between the two.

      Depending on how wide the rows were... that might work !

    Really beautiful looking corn! Corn up here is only still at the spike stage to maybe 4 inches tall yet, as my season is way behind yours. I am VERY jealous, wishing mine looked that good!! LOL I happen to never have seen this high arch cultivator before or really i mean one like it. It's a cool looking tool that would save a lot of labor. Anything that saves labor for a 70 year old with bad legs and back is really good tool. I'm going to check it out for sure! It looks to be very heavy duty and well made in your video as well. I hear your comments saying so as well. They are good enough for me as I am sure you would not be praising it if it wasn't a good product. We sound like we are very similar in our thoughts and life style. Hard working and VERY conservative with our money as we work to hard for it to waste it. We would be good friends I think for sure!!! I have also noted that we look for easier ways to do things. TRYING to use our heads to think. NOT as a place to hang or just carry our hats. As you know many people don't do that LOL. Keep on keeping on as they say. Good luck with that garden it's off to a great start. Hopefully it will reward you with abundant fruits for all your labors. Very sincerely as always! JOHN PS did you put those Epson salts on YET??? Might even help the corn and other plants in your garden as well. I don't really know! Take care of yourself your wife is the only other person that will. JOHN

    got cut off some how to finish up what I was saying. The old TROY-BUILT rototillers had a similar attachment that they made for their tillers. IT does require you to lay your rows out spaced properly and straight of course. This really pays off in the labor you save in hilling and weeding down the road latter in the season though! On many things i use the SQUARE FOOT gardening system or a variation of it. It saves a lot of labor in weeding etc and gives me surprisingly good corp yields too. Just need to fertilize a little heavier and pay close attention to things! Doing it this way diseases and little problems can get be big ones fast! .JOHN

    I forgot to mention! I plant my corn in a double row side by side. Space the next double row over enough. That way I can use my home made cultivator plow in between the rows to hill the corn with. I made extensions on it giving it long wings to the V center and use that to hill my corn and potatoes with also in a lot of other spots just to help with the weeding. Troy-

    This procedure is called cultivating or rather what used to be called. It helps strenghen the corn to resist wind. Not a plow but a cultivator.

      HOSS calls 'em "Plows":
      hosstools.com/product/wheel-hoe-walk-behind-plow-set/
      I've heard them called "hiller plows" all my life.

      When corn gets tall enuf you "lay it bye"...meaning machine will not pass over the stalk again without breaking it. I had not thot of laying it by with the wheel hoe. The tool is one of the most versatile garden tools I have ever seen in action.....and I been from Maine to Spain and Boston to Austin. Hahaha....

    Heck,its bigger than my corn.Up here in southrn illinois our corn is only a couple of weeks along right now.But i say that,that corn wants to survive as bad as we do so it will produce something.Maybe it will have some undiscovered positive reaction like maybe it will grow 3 ears a foot long or somethin.

    How does hilling the soil help the corn?

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From Garden.org:
      HillingHilling is pulling up soil to mound it around the base of a plant. When you hill a young corn plant, the added soil around its stem helps support it as it grows taller. This protects it from being blown over in a strong wind. To really anchor plants, it's a good idea to hill corn every two to three weeks until the plants start to tassel.Hilling also covers and smothers any weeds around the base of your corn plants. You might say you're creating a "soil mulch" around your plants. If dryness is a problem, extra soil helps the corn roots retain moisture.

    Corn is looking good!! I have a very old single plow wheel hoe that I inherited from my Dad. It does a good job even if I have to make a pass down each side. Did you throw in some fertilizer before you laid it by?
    What variety did you plant?
    Thanks for sharing!

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fertilized the middles of the rows a few days earlier.
      I think this is G90

  • @siddasgupta679
    @siddasgupta679 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand what you’re doing. But is there a sweep that will push up the dirt on one side only? That way one can use a single wheel hoe and run it on both sides of the row of corn or tomatoes or potatoes? Just asking.

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YOU BET!
      In fact, that's what I did to my corn just after making this video.
      It's too tall to run the "High Arch" wheel hoe, so I just put ONE sweep on the hoe... making it throw dirt to one side.
      Then I ran down the row, on either side, and threw dirt (actually mud 😎) ... to the corn after fertilizing it.
      The plows can be swapped from side to side to either furrow or hill.

      @@BIGALTX just another question: if your wheel hoe was powered, would you be able to turn the soil over with the plow without having to till the soil first? Thank you

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess so.
      I think what you are talking about would be similar to a "Walking Tractor".
      I had one decades ago.

    • @siddasgupta679
      @siddasgupta679 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BIGALTX you’re right. Just imagine a Hoss hoe with a 5hp engine powering the single wheel. In your opinion will that become a small tractor able to plow soil and cultivate?

    A few of you youtubers have gotten those hoss tools.
    If you can........givve hoss tools a request just from me watching you use it. ......i feel they should have light plastic renders so the plats just slide against and away from wheels also pointed down towards front as to pick up the sagging plant and glide it between the wheels. I can see that in bigger plants it would help prevent running over branchs or plant thats out of line a bit

      Usually, they eat me out of house and home.
      Not sure what I'll do this year.
      Bird netting around the corn might help... I'm thinking about doing that.
      Either that or trapping them and relocating them
