Thank you Stephen for focusing the spotlight on other forms of art and entertainment instead of the usual Hollywood drab that your competitors are so obsessed with. Keep on showing us more stuff like this!!!
Classically trained ballerina here, and though I recognized the craft behind tap, I never thought it could hold this much soul. Inspiring performance by Ms. Dorrance and the band, and stunning decision by Colbert & co!
+ohhoworiginal Try to find Gregory Hines big tap dance number from Copolla's "Cotton Club." Powerfully emotional and Copolla uses it to great effect in the larger story.
Jesus fucking Christ Stephen's show is the best. When the time will come and I will get a chance to visit new york my top priority will be to sit in the audience there, such a classy late night show.
Having taken classes with her, I can tell you Michelle Dorrance is by far one of the best out there as far as pure technique, style, and musicianship. And she is definitely my favorite choreographer.
Michelle, can i say that i have always found tap interesting, but when watching this, i genuinely was moved to tears. The dedication, mastery and stagecraft was so amazing that i legitimately could not help but shed some tears. I hope one day to see you live.
Transitioning from performing with Yo Yo Ma, to accompanying this tap dancer, Jon Batiste is showing an amazing level of musicianship to an unprecedentedly vast audience. I hope that the show at some point features some music educators, or promotes music education and funding for the arts - because now more than ever it is hard for artists to make a living.
+Snapdeus Yes. .. On the Late Show Stephen Colbert TH-cam Channel, this is featured as a "Studio Bit" rather than as a "Musical Performance." What kind of weird snub is that?
OH MY GOD this show though. Jon Batiste, Stay Human and Michelle Dorrance...... This was MAGIC. Stephen, you are the gatekeeper of all good things on television. How can you be KILLING it like this? This show is UNBELIEVABLE. It's impossible to be THIS good at what you do. My goodness.
As someone who personally knows Michelle and considers her a friend, I can honestly tell the youtube community this, that as great of a performer she is, she's an even better person. She is the definition of hard work and staying humble. Go "Florence" Dorrance. You killed it!!!
Honestly this show just makes you happy. It's not even a late show, it's a celebration of culture, music, games, and Stephens own take on the world. Great job
It's not always that someone can come around and not only open my eyes to a form of art that I never payed attention to, but also bring me to a whole new level of appreciation for it. She is fantastic. Thank you Stephen for including something so special in your show.
One of the best things I've seen - and I've seen things for 61 years! Look at that one person who just HAD to click 'dislike' above. It must be hard to actually LIVE the life of Ebenezer Scrooge.
Finally, late night television you stay up to watch instead of watching to fall asleep. Amazing performance and a wonderful example of how Stephen Colbert is changing late night television for the better!
She is amazing. I think she's very unique though, unlike Eleanor Powell, who didn't improvise, Michelle is a wonderful improvisational dancer as well as choreographer. But of course, Eleanor Powell was also a very strong female tap dancer and had a huge presence!
+Ella Steele You're right about improv. I was thinking more about similarity of sound quality, foot speed, energy, strength and charisma. I am a fan of both!
Thank you for showing Dance and Music and art collaboration! It is so inspiring and refreshing to see someone do something different with Late Night and to welcome all forms of art and showcase serious talent! You rock my face off Stephen!
This is one of my favorite performances!! This late show is frikin' amazing showcasing so many new things and interesting people and also being funny af! I have never loved a late show like I love this one, the best by far!
Holy Jesus... The Late Show under Colbert is making all other late night talk shows look like regurgitated drivel. I wish Craig F. was still around for the Late Late Show and everyone else could just bugger off.
What 6 cretins clicked the "thumbs down" button? Kids who probably don't understand the amazing history & culture tap draws from. This girl is beyond incredible! Guess I answered my own question. Gotta say, I was scared when Colbert left his persona & Comedy Central behind for the "bigs". But it's essentially the same show & I'm so happy! The mix of guests & the politics/worldview, instead of just constant "sell my movie/book/cd" celebrity pap is refreshing ... and it's really making him stand out amongst the rest. (Except the cable boys also from Stewart's pen - Oliver, Wilmore & even Noah is surprising me...) I'm with Martinaee, who wishes CraigyFerg were still around to follow this show.
Wow. This is the first time in a long time that I've seen something truly innovative and new from tap. Most tap performances I've seen recently focus too much on speed (taps per minute dick-waving) or being tied slavishly to the music. Ms. Dorrance's performance here seems to incorporate a variety of different modern dance styles as well as the courage to not be fortissimo all the time. It feels like something Fred Astaire would have done if he were alive today.
Really got to learn the lead musicians name. Because as you watch, you see him timing himself to the dancer just as much as she was timing herself to the music. If this performance could be any more true to the history of both artforms :)
Wonderful dancing, terrific interplay between dancer and band -- real jazz improvisation! But terrible camera work. Dancing is done with the whole body, not just the feet.
Michelle will be teaching and performing at Stockholm Tap Festival 2016, March 23rd-29th!! STF is one of the worlds biggest tap dance festivals with participants from around 30 differetn countries. All info at: www.StockholmTapFestival.blogspot.com

+Isaac White yes yes more yes
Couldn't help it, started clapping in front of the computer screen when they wrapped this up. Sensational. So alive.

+ohhoworiginal You should also look up the Nicholas Brothers. They are really amazing.
+jrpipik Thanks! I'll have a look.
+Micheal1222 There's a world of cultural richness out there. Thanks!
+jrpipik or hines and the ballet legend baryshnikov in the film "White Nights"
Jesus fucking Christ Stephen's show is the best. When the time will come and I will get a chance to visit new york my top priority will be to sit in the audience there, such a classy late night show.
+Mr. Tulip I second that!
Having taken classes with her, I can tell you Michelle Dorrance is by far one of the best out there as far as pure technique, style, and musicianship. And she is definitely my favorite choreographer.

+Snapdeus But "for exposure"
Yeah bruv, I hear ya.
Seriously, I'd love to take out my clarinet and jam with these musicians. I love it when musicians know how to have a good time!
+Snapdeus Yes. .. On the Late Show Stephen Colbert TH-cam Channel, this is featured as a "Studio Bit" rather than as a "Musical Performance." What kind of weird snub is that?

+Stephen Serwacki , completely agree with you, and she's a world class teacher, too!
Sublime perfection. Michelle Dorrance is sheer joy and what a band.
Honestly this show just makes you happy. It's not even a late show, it's a celebration of culture, music, games, and Stephens own take on the world. Great job
I just love how they showcase other interesting art forms such as this! Amazing dance. Fantasic band too!
she just nailed it with pure confidence
Literally took my breath away. She is an artistic force.
It's not always that someone can come around and not only open my eyes to a form of art that I never payed attention to, but also bring me to a whole new level of appreciation for it. She is fantastic. Thank you Stephen for including something so special in your show.
So much soul.. The band and dancer are awesome!
One of the best things I've seen - and I've seen things for 61 years! Look at that one person who just HAD to click 'dislike' above. It must be hard to actually LIVE the life of Ebenezer Scrooge.
I love how pumped the band is playing this.

amazing stuff here...best late night show by a mile
Beautiful JOB Michelle Dorrance...
amazing, makes me happy. Colbert's late show is what people called an "instant classic"
I have literally watched this a dozen times and I'm back for another. Transcendent, beautiful, amazing.
Colbert's show is off the charts amazing. Which means it's only a matter of time before it gets shut down.
She has Gene Kelly's energy mixed with Fred Astaire's grace. Simply amazing!
You're so amazing Michelle, you're a very gifted tap dancer!
...& quite the racist too.
I can watch this over and over , never get tired. It's so good!
once again, Stephen's appreciation of the arts, in all their forms, is so damn refreshing. stay gold Ponyman! : )
So inspiring! This is what MacArthur recipient level tap looks (and sounds) like! This century's Eleanor Powell.
She is amazing. I think she's very unique though, unlike Eleanor Powell, who didn't improvise, Michelle is a wonderful improvisational dancer as well as choreographer. But of course, Eleanor Powell was also a very strong female tap dancer and had a huge presence!

Amazing job!! Very talented dancer and amazing band too!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for showing Dance and Music and art collaboration! It is so inspiring and refreshing to see someone do something different with Late Night and to welcome all forms of art and showcase serious talent! You rock my face off Stephen!
She is awesome! I love watching her Tap!
Do you also love her racism?
Setting the bar for late night television here.
This is one of my favorite performances!! This late show is frikin' amazing showcasing so many new things and interesting people and also being funny af! I have never loved a late show like I love this one, the best by far!
Way to go Michelle!!
Great performance! I love her! So much soul and elegance, such excellence! Hats off ....
What an amazing performance
She reminds me of a terrific tap dancer from the 30s, Ruby Keeler. Lots of fun!
+D. Black dang lady how old are you?
+good afternoon I've seen old movies! Plus, I'm a fan of tap.
+D. Black Yea she definitely has hand/arm movements like Keeler did.
FailedComedian The same kind of stomping, too, for lack of a better description.
The performance and the music brings me so much joy!
Fine, Stephen - you've convinced me. Other people besides movie stars deserve to be household names, too!
The one and only 🙏💜🌺
This is fantastic!
Thank you featuring dancers & broadway performers; it's an excellent decision. You are like none other :)
I was tap dancing in my seat. Love it. 🥰
Pure Art Amazing
Holy Jesus... The Late Show under Colbert is making all other late night talk shows look like regurgitated drivel. I wish Craig F. was still around for the Late Late Show and everyone else could just bugger off.
+martinaee because people like kimmel and fallon are probably alcoholics who just like mingling with movie stars and cliche pop drama
+martinaee craig f can bugger off
Incredible!
ballet, jazz and tap dance!
Phenomenal tap dancing

I have watched this clip every night for a week, and will keep doing so until i get tired of it.
Which will be - NEVER....
AWESOMENESS
THAT WAS FUCKING DOPE!!!!
Colbert is the closest thing we have now to a good variety show and I couldn't be happier.
ALL DAY
Yes!
Props Michelle! Can see that all round dance influence as well as the tap - refreshing!!!! :D
This lady is a genius
absolutely superb!!!!
Just saw this and it made my quarantine day 😍
Those shoes just look so good and comfy 😍
Does someone know where I can get the same?
That chic got skills.
Love this girl. I wanna dance like this.
That was awesome.
Holy shit first comment on on of the most entertaining 3 minutes on youtube ever. I'm blessed!
woo that was crazy!!
This show is classy af goddamn.
1:28 holy crap
had to slow this to half speed to make sure i knew where every tap noise was coming from
Wow!!!!!
At first I was really not into it, then Jon started playing, and then things really KICKED off :D
For a second at the beginning I though that she almost slipped, then I remembered .. silly me.
That was pretty bad ass. Your move other late show hosts. :)
at this point, colbert is just in a completely different genre...
Tap-a-tap-a-tap-a!
Goddamn , so awesome Between this and the Zelda orchestra
Colbert bringing the noise

Okay. I'm ready to turn on the TV. Can someone please help me? How does one find this show on traditional television? Thanks!
Not sure where you live, but it's on CBS, weekdays, 11:35 EST
I'd tap that!
+Dhot Melvin Ill tap to that
Wow, I didn't even know that was possible.
Really got to learn the lead musicians name.
Because as you watch, you see him timing himself to the dancer just as much as she was timing herself to the music.
If this performance could be any more true to the history of both artforms :)
I love to watch her do this tap dance wearing heel tap shoes
she was stomp tap-dancing though and teaching
Im not into tapdancing or at least never gave it a chance but that was AMAZING
Wonderful dancing, terrific interplay between dancer and band -- real jazz improvisation!
But terrible camera work. Dancing is done with the whole body, not just the feet.

anyone know the music they are accompanying with?
Man stephen is a show off, why cant he do the same boring stuff as other late night host
+Sushant Pandey I know, right? The competition should be who has the most boring tv show, not who has the most interesting tv show
Might have her on some more. Been two years.
Anyone know what kind of shoes she has??
i took a trip with my daughter to se her dance company at lincoln center today
Good God, she's good.
I bet she has the strongest, most resilient calf muscles imaginable.
Dis da bes
a woman with any skills is VERY attractive
+LuchoVena Not that she isn't, but who cares about how attractive you find her? She's brilliant--that is all that matters.
+Zachary Dickson Not what he said.
#BERNIE2016
Is the song the band playing an actual song?
mmm she sure knows how to make a fellow feel good and hard
So glad this is on TH-cam, because CBS' video player is awful!
Her leg muscles must be crazy intense.
