    Another technique is to never use the clutch AT ALL once you've shifted into second. Not on upshifts or downshifts or even moving slowly through traffic. Or even coming to a halt. It does make progress a bit jerky but the money you save on wear and tear to the sole of your left shoe can go towards clutch plates and damage to your gearbox.

      You don't even have to ram it in gear, as long as it's rev matched it will mesh up perfectly, which is what the clutch is their for anyways. I barely use my clutch only when I really need to get on it, never power shifted, sometimes a quick shift again when I have get on it pretty fast, other then that iv taken to double clutch in low rpm during slow traffic, slides right into gear.

    • @skymonkey30
      @skymonkey30 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tylervanneste3586 it doesn't always mesh up perfectly tho, that sweet spot is usually around 3200rpm on many cars. That method is worse than using the clutch. Just using that sweet spot does more wear and tear. I'm very familiar with this method and there's times where it grinds / rubs the gears. Not a good method, just use the clutch, clutches can last forever if your not beating or racing the car. One reason people burn out their clutches overtime from daily driving is they just rest their left foot on the pedal without realizing it which is habit. Part of that issue is also because alot of clutch pedals are not evenly lined up with the other pedals, they sit up higher so the bad habit occurs with slightly riding the clutch. Now power shifting and speed shifting does tons of wear n tear. Power shifting is fastest but its just terrible to do which is common sense.

    Cool video, brings back memories. I found that most later model trans had pretty decent double/triple cone syncros in 1st/2nd, and sometimes 3rd. The syncros would take quite a beating but nothing a quick rebuild wouldn't take care of. In motorcycles I would shift without the clutch all the time, but their transmissions are a lot different than a cars. Semis I would float gears all the time too, but I never got very good like some of the pros I see on TH-cam lol.

      Traviltar Exactly then stop commenting like that. There is a reason why you power shift when you power shift. One example is you power shift so you don't lose turbo spool. When you power shift you will keep turbo spooled and will always be at peak power band. There are other applications where you use power shifting but cba explain everything now it's too long. You don't use power shifting while driving in traffic because you will just waste your clutch and tranny. :v

      It doesn't do anything to your synchronizers... Just because you floor your gas pedal while declutched, it doesn't change anything. Speed of input or countershaft or output shaft remains the same when changing gear. It just burns your clutch morw quickly. Changing gear, while flooring the gas pedal and not declutching would destroy your synchros.

    Quick shifting is like half floating gears. Floating would be possible if the engine speed dropped fast enough to go from one gear to another without hitting the safety gate and going right to the next gear. You don't HAVE to use the clutch to shift, but people do upon belief that you DO HAVE to which isn't true. The torque release on the transmission when shifting a synchronized transmission just allows the gears to synchronize with each other instantaneously using the synchronized. Unsynchro transmissions don't have these synchronizers so rely solely on engine speed and road speed for what gear you want. If you can time it just right you can save your clutch and extend its lifespan greatly. I float the gears in my pickup for that reason. Power shifting will just burn your clutch out.

    • @MNKYGaming
      @MNKYGaming 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When my clutch went out on my Saab, I had to drive it without the clutch and just shift.
      So yes you are right, you can do this, but it is not good on your transmission at all. Unless you're absolutely perfect.

    • @JoseMartinez-ll7vo
      @JoseMartinez-ll7vo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BRADY SCHROEDER you should not float gears at all in a synchronized transmission. You will end up breaking your syncros and then you won't have a choice. I've never met a trucker who could float every gear perfectly they will always get a lil grind and that's what's gonna ruin your synros in a reg car or truck. Anyone who says they never grind gears is either a liar or they drive an automatic.

    You can shift without the clutch (someone mentioned it), but that's really just for fun or for when just have to...if your clutch release fails. It will wear out your synchros if you don't do it just right....just like power or speed shifting will.

    I don't mean any offence to this driver because he is really good at both shifts, but you should never use "power shifting." Not only does it destroy your synchros and clutch, but it's not actually any faster than a properly executed shift (especially with a light flywheel). The real tricks to quick shifts are proper clutch adjustment, your shifter grip , and anticipation. I find it best with clutch engagement only an inch or so off the floor, and to always drive the shifter with the palm of my hand rather than my fumbly fingers.

    • @789pokey
      @789pokey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If done properly it takes years for any damage to show on the synchros and clutch. It is absolutely quicker than regular shifting, at least a couple car lengths. You preload the shift linkage with your arm and just brush the clutch pedal to take enough pressure off of the clutch disc so you can grab the next gear, the disc is never fully released. If you fully release the disc the car is decelerating. If you lift to shift the vehicle is not accelerating at the max.

      GwoodBloodz Actually, you NEVER take your foot off the gas. In some cars it's a standard feature like the ZR1. That certain feature is call "No-Lift-Shifting" and it uses the cars PCM to match RPMs. However power shifting can hurt the clutch but mostly in higher gears. That's why he only does it in 1-3 gear.

    Now now children, this isnt an everyday driving technique. Dont get any bright ideas.
    this is something you do on the strip. using this technique in traffic, or someplace that actually has turns in it could result in some very nasty surprises, and im not talking about tranny damage... more like power induced loss of control of the vehicle, due to wheel spin or undesired weight transfer. Take note of the wheel spin going from first to second, you do that coming out of a corner in a rear wheel drive car, the car is going to try and swap ends on you. And I dont care how good some of you kids "think" you are, you get into an unintentional power oversteer condition in public with only 2 or 3 years in the drivers seat you will probably hit something or worse - kill someone. This is bad. However you kids that are responsable and take your car to the drags and do it the right way, pay attention- this guy's advice is spot on for straightline motorsport. Just dont go hotdogging around on occupied public streets like an idiot. if you really must try this stuff out (yes, I was a dumb kid once... so I know some of you are itching to do shit like this... I did) do it in a very large empty parking lot.

      you hit the nail on its head...these things all have their place. the enpty parking lot is of course the best idea (unless u have a local airport that noone uses) one thing i would add is dont try anything u kids see on youtube on public road!! everyone had to learn somewhere because no matter how well u study it...there is no equal to actually feeling it in the car...practice makes perfect...mistakes make u better.

      it all depends on what the car is used for. a simple DD then sure there are a lot of auto cars. Like myself, anyone who has a car that benefits from being a stick(anything thats fun/has power etc) we drive manuals. I have 2 turbo cars that are both sticks and a little crappy honda that is auto. Its all about use. Americans get enough of a bad rap from the media, please dont start assuming things about us. every country has their good and bad. it just appears the dumb ones always find the camera and the keyboard.

      Uragan5 v8 cars are unreliable? Maybe the new ones are reliable? What are you smoking? Old Chevy small blocks are weak and I don’t know about Ford - but most old Dodge v8’s have over engineered blocks and all but a few engines came with forged pistons, rods and crank shafts. With roller cams to compensate for lack of zinc in the oil, they will last for ever. Newer v8’s can tend to have issues because we can’t just use up metal like we used to.

      Fatal Motorsports No i'm a mechanic and have been racing bangers and track days for the past 7 years. yes that was a bit of a narrow minded opinion but you can hardly deny a majority of the racing done in the US is in a line and in a oval. yes not all, but alot of it. as for the tips in your vid yes they may help you get a slightly faster shift, but it will over time smash your tranny as you guys would call it. a better technique to teach would be heal toe, as its hard to master properly and it has great benefits on and off the track. before you slap someone down, us English do have a brain between their ears. and we can understand a JOKE when we hear them especially from Jeremy Clarkson, enough said?

    • @CentralTXPerformance
      @CentralTXPerformance  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We're all mechanics here, and we all have 5+ years of racing experience. I'm sorry that you can't seem to grasp the real benefits of this technique, but how does that imply that you are any smarter than us? I guess it wouldn't be as ironic if you could simply spell 'heel-toe' correctly. I use rev matching and heel-toe everyday on my way to work, so keep your comments to yourself. We made one video on one specific technique, and now you lob yourself into your 'Top Gear' mindset implying that we Americans are less intelligent than Europeans, we know less about driving, blah blah blah. Go back to jerking off to pictures of Jezza, buddy.

      oh yes i haven't think about a drag race! however powershifting can be dangerous for some car parts... so i think if you're not a professional drag racer, you don't have to powershift, because if you powershift in a race, probably you won't arrive to the end

    • @badlilstang
      @badlilstang 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow, so untrue.. I power shifted 9 second mustangs with a Long Throw Ram clutch. What will break shit is missing the gear during a shift or also known as a sloppy shift. Although you do not know me.. shifting 5 speeds is what I was known for back when I was racing.

    • @RandomPlayer8
      @RandomPlayer8 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      in my opinion powershifting during a race (not a drag) is silly because the clutch will be hurt by that, and if you powershift during an high range turn where the G force is pretty high for long time, probably you will spin off... i don't know that for sure, but i'm pretty sure it's like that... it's physics. However i've understood that is necessary to do that in a drag where every single rpm and sec have to be used as best as you can

    This makes no sense and power shifting is not a real thing. The tyre squeel should tell you that you are wasting traction. The revs need to drop to pick up the next gear. The best way to change quickly is to only come off the gas slightly to allow the revs to be in the right position for the next gear. More practice needed
