What is the cannon of Rome now? They Brutii conqoured the world and defeated the other families, left Earth. Their empire on Earth fell apart and that's when Medieval 2 series happens. Meanwhile in space the Brutii form the Pax Romana and stroke a bug on the face who says "oh my, the Romans touched me"?

Even though I like Jon's tirades on history, a lot of this information is already out there. If you like ancient civilisations just go to your local library, or if your all on this "new" age stuff, you can search on youtube about it. A good lecture I found was why the bronze age collapsed? this is basically what Jon is talking about the Minoan empire. (whom provided copper to the east (Assiryans) they made tin who brought it back to Athens/Greece, who then made it into Bronze.) Or something like that. It was bacially Globalisation before the world "got bigger".

@@treeshakertucker5840 Well he's relatable. "A mark of a good scholar is a teacher who can relate and inspire not subjugate and dictate" or whatever pliny said.
This is why my history teacher, although old fashioned in some of his ways, was great because he was relatable - which in turn his first generation students ended up teaching me in my O levels and in turn made me what I like today...
More people/kids need to learn history and read it themselves...it would hopefully stop this enternal wheel of doom that we have going on.

      @@JoshuaKevinPerry Kinda, but not really:
"Since Europa Universalis III, Paradox Development Studio’s grand strategy games have owed a debt to Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz, or at least his name. The Clausewitz engine has powered every internal Paradox Interactive game since 2007, but starting with upcoming grand strategy game Imperator: Rome, it’s getting a pretty significant upgrade. Yes, it’s also named after a Napoleonic era general: Antoine-Henri Jomini.
“Naming is the hardest thing in software,” jokes engine team lead John Wordsworth.
Jomini isn’t taking over, and Clausewitz isn’t going anywhere; the pair are two halves of the same engine. “Clausewitz is a bunch of code that you can use to make games,” says Wordsworth. “Theoretically, you could use it to make a city-builder, a strategy game, an FPS … not that it would give you any tools for that, but you could, theoretically.
“Jomini is specifically for the top-down, map-based games. The overall vision is to try and share tech across as many of our projects as possible, so we can make bigger games, better games, faster.” " - Fraser Brown, VentureBeat

When norse settlers first came to Iceland it is said the island was covered with trees. But because of excessive deforestation most of them were cut down which may have led to increased land erosion and decreased fertility of the land. This is pretty much an accepted fact
Now we mostly have some shrubbery left but there has actually been a concerted effort to reforest the country with native species.
So that theory about Minoan deforestation may not be so crazy after all.

    • @flinfake
      @flinfake 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah if you look at any semi-sorta-kinda-prehistoric(?) civilization that was mad advanced you will see an almost inconceivable amount of deforestation. My understanding is that the mini ice age that froze napoleons tits off was partially caused by native american deforestation.

I bought Crusader Kings 2 and while the depth and incredible complexity was initially a huge draw for me, I found the multitude of interface windows, setting, pop-ups, etc just overwhelming. You manage this engine like a master puppeteer. I have learned a tremendous amount from just watching you in this video. I will be watching the rest and playing this game thanks to you. Congratulations...you've just earned another avid subscriber.

I always liked the tidbits of history you'd include in your RTW series, so more of that is very *very* welcome!! Also I never got round to watching your Stelaris series, but I think after this I'll check them out :D

I'm really loving Jon becoming a fan of Paradox. Hopefully we get to the point when we see him covering something like Victoria 2 or Europa Universalis 4. Although, it's a shame that either of those histories aren't really in the matter of expertise for him though considering how great the little historical bits in this were.

Oh GOD P L E A S E when this inevitably becomes a channel series; can you make it a series of lessons on bits of history you find interesting.
There is nothing on this channel I love more than when your voice gets The Tone™ and you start a 15 minute tangent about cool history stuff.

Jon, I have no idea about this part of history... But listening to you talk about Knossos is just making me smile widely. You are so excited and I love it.
You should totally give history lessons online, and use game material and footage to teach it!

I really like that map view for representing the classical ancient world; the bits it leaves out are pretty irrelevant to anything but some trade for such purposes

Also Jon, didn't mesopotamia have earlier manmade climate disasters beforehand? Remember, how it used to be all lush and whatnot? It isn't anymore, similar situation.
      Dare I even mention lebanon?
