Classical and known composition of course, but this is not classical music. This is jazz, or may be better to call it third stream, a cross-over between classical music and jazz. Jazzing the classics is something that has been done many times but it's really amazing how Lewis built his astonishing rendition around, and inside, the Well Tempered Clavier. He subtitled the work « The Bridge Game ». The most disconcerting version I ever heard. Much better than the K. Jarret's ridiculous one using a harpsichord. I don't really care about J. Pareles ( N.Y. Times) sending flowers to Jarret ( the media darling) and trying to destroy Lewis' work. For my own taste, this is a stylish and technical exploit. Just sayin'.
I must have listened to this volume at least 30X, and to the other three volumes a similar number of times. John Lewis brings something to Bach that Bach didn't have, and that is superbly magical soul. Mr. Lewis' improvisations here are among the most beautiful that I've ever heard...

Fugue No. 9 and Fugue No. 16 always relieve me of stress and anxiety. John's performance reveals how much he adored Bach. I own 4 CDs of his Well-Tempered Clavier, yet, I hope more people come to know his superb interpretation of Bach by your posting.
Just got home and this is relaxing to the extreme.
I love Bach, and Lewis' 4 Volumes from The Well-Tempered Clavier are my all-time favorite recordings of Bach!! This is wonderful. Thank you for posting, and yes, This should have millions of views!!

John Lewis' rendition of Prelude 5 will always remain my favorite. I wish more musicians played it slower because of its lovely melody.

The Prelude No 8 at 37:20 is one of the best renditions of this fugue I've ever heard. I put it right up there with Sviatoslav Richter.
There's a very rare privat recording from Vladimir Sofronitsky in 1956 for the 853, I don't think any human can equal such a rendition.

Hamid, Thanks for featuring this recording of John Lewis playing Bach. I wasn’t aware that he had been jazzing the classics. I agree it’s much better than Keith Jarrett’s Bach. What do you think of Jacques Loussier’s versions of the Bach repertoire? I love what Hazel Scott did with some of the classical piano pieces. What doesn’t get talked about much is the reverse process of classicizing the standard show tunes. The two great practitioners of this were George Shearing and Don Shirley.
Loussier's versions are immensely superior. He sold millions of records all around the world. Lewis did not with his bach jokes

did anybody come here after watching the flying kayak scene in "comme un avion" 2015?
Yes I did just watch it and I must say it so good so full of fine feeling that I haven't quite got over it. The soundtrack is superb including this incredible interpretation of some of the Well tempered Clavier. It almost makes me sick that I've never come across John Lewis before. The film is of course re-named in America as The Sweet Escape.
