I find these videos amazingly useful you are seriously the only person to explain it in a understandable way. I have spoken to many people at my local archery clubs and NONE of them could explain the basics like this in a consistent understandable way. There are so many opinions and people never agree but you seem to hit the middle road on all of your videos thanks again.

I went to an archery store and bough what they recommended, a 58 opm for me... I'm 5'2... I measured my drawlength etc and it all seemed to recommend 64 in and above. thank you for the video, at least i feel like I can still use my bow even though it might be a bit short.
i think archery store only recommend overstocked cheap bow to beginners. do ur own research, never trust seller XD. while i was hunting on my first bow. i found a omp explorer 2.0 62" 29lb RH. for 77 Canadian Dollars from amazon. imediately clicked buy. it will come in tomorrow, just hoping its not defective/openbox item.
chang hye jin must be around same size ,i'm sure hers is a 68" i find a 55lb 60" hunting bow less smooth and harder to pull than a 60lb 70" longbow .. pretty sure short bows compound draw weight
Well i do find some helpful tips to exactly measure your draw lenght (DL for short.) First, pickup your bow (obviously) then stab some cardboard to your arrow around 1/3 of the arrow, then go for your anchor point. The cardboard should be pushed by the bow when you get for your anchor point. Then measure the arrow from the nock to the cardboard. Aaaand done. Sorry if my english is bad.
i found a adult sized fiberglass recurve my dad bought in the late 70s . i started shooting it just for kicks and found that i enjoy the activity . im a seasoned firearm target shooter so i fell in love with the bow lol... i want to buy a proper sized recurve but i have no clue what brands to look at my budget is 150-200$ i also dont have a clue what the draw weight i need is.. i plan to shoot this bow over and over but not wanting to soft of a draw weight ... confused? good because i am lol.. great video
Hello Sensei, I was looking to buy a bow for myself. I am a beginner, as in, I have never used a bow before, and my goal is to eventually be good enough to shoot some small game that comes into my backyard. I was wondering what you would recommend for me. I am a relatively tall person, about 6 '4". My wing span is a little bigger at 6' 6". Thank you! This explains alot about my archery experience. I bought a 50lb samick sage for my first bow and I didn't realize it was to small for me. I'm 5'10" with a 69" wing span and probably have a 29.5-30 inch draw length. I kept getting skin ripped off of my pointer and middle finger and it was extremely difficult for me to hold full draw for longer than a second or two. I will get a longer bow now and see how that feels. Thanks for the great insight!

just drop the tension down to 20-25lbs , with your draws added tension youll be at around 50lbs total draw and you'll be able to hold it "forever". In contrast to your already set 50lbs your draw is fighting to add more lbs resulting in less muscle stamina to hold the draw weight.
I personally like shorter hunter style recurve bows in the 54"-56" range.. I'm short and have only a 25-26" normal draw. I have a couple 64"-68" recurve bows that I range with but the shorter bows go hunting with me. I have several compound bows and they too are all short. Pearson Equalizer 38" and a PSE Stalker 39" are my favorite. Both set at 50lbs so I'm legal in Georgia to hunt with.
My input, imo size only really matters mainly on self bows, in which case you have to be careful with the short bows and use a shorter draw length, modern recurves and longbows are pretty resilient in terms of draw length. Some stacking will happen with some shorter bows though but it depends.
For modern bows, it's not so much a matter of whether bow can handle it. For a target archer, using a bow of the wrong length can make it difficult to anchor properly.
so I'm a little confused my finger to finger measures at 72, which means my drawl should be 28.8 which means my bow should be 68. I know you're saying bow size doesn't matter but i still want the ideal size for me.
Great video! Super helpful information. However, I still have some hesitation in buying too short a bow. I'm 6'2" and have calculated my draw length to be about 30". I'm planning to hunt with a recurve this fall, and so far, the longest bows I've been shown at the two archery shops I've visited are 62". At 45-50 lbs, this seems fine, but at 55 lbs (which is the bow I like the most right now), I'm not able to fully draw it back yet (once I’m able to, with stacking it’ll be around ≈59 lbs). I haven't purchased anything, but what I'm hoping to do (if a 62" bow is doable for my draw length) is to purchase extra limbs that are rated at 35-40 lbs for getting my technique down. What are your thoughts? I can't seem to find anything for hunting past 64" (60 and 62 seem to be much more common) and all of the bows that seem to be closest to what I need are more than what I was planning to spend. I'm fine with this as long as it's something that I can use for years to come. Would seeking out a 64” bow be ideal for my situation or is 62” at the right draw weight totally fine? Thank you!
I made a mistake when buying traditional recurve. I bought bow which was 32 inches in max draw lenght guaranteed by manufacturer (i have 33 inch max draw lenght) , but was too short in size, so I was hardly able to pull it more 28 inches before it started to stack the draw weight like crazy...
Personally I like shorter bows, I use a 60" bow. 17"riser, medium limbs. I have a 68 target bow and I wish I had gone with a 23"riser and short limbs, this of course comes completely from experience. Hell my favorite bow to shoot is my 54"Mongolian. The only true way to tell is to shoot many bows of many lengths
I did this and compared it to the "(arm length)/2.5" method, and I only got about a 1" difference, which is pretty negligible for buying a beginner bow. I don't think it's a terrible method for measuring draw length.
Thank you for this video. I'd never given size much thought before. I am actually a larper, so I am shooting (with padded safety arrows) at moving targets. I don't know what kind of bow would be optimal for me; for safety, most LARP systems impose a max draw of around 30lbs, sometimes 25lbs. According to a rough measurement, my draw length is about 26". According to what's written (actually On the bow) it says '28lbs 62", 26lbs 66"' I am approx. 5'3" tall, making the current bow length closer to the 62" mark. The limbs are ones I bought separately for it because the draw weight was too high with the ones it had. No idea of the origins of the bow as I got it secondhand.
yes hunting bows are shorter trees hunting in them with a long bow is a bit tricking branches and stuff smaller bows work just fine i use a long bow its more forgiving on release but no matter what bow you get form is everything form is the key no matter what style of bow you get in order to get your form right you have to have a bow you can pull alot !!!!!! ive seen ladys kill deer with 35 lbs 2 blade hunting heads so lbs is nice to have but form is number one i use howard hill style but what every style learn your form bad form means bad shot placement paper or hunting form is number one NUSensei will agree with me on this a coach like sensei is very nice to have until you learn your form and enjoy the sport very fun
I am a beginner archer, 6' tall, and I have a draw length of 29.5". I own a 40# Martin Panther Take-Down recurve bow, which is 62" long. Exactly as you said, it is a hunting bow, and Martin doesn't sell it in lengths longer than 64" (which I couldn't find when I bought mine). One thing I noticed was that even using an olympic recurve sight and setting it in the higher position in the scale, the arrows get too high in the target. Also, I feel that it's too heavy when drawing, and I get really shaky after a few shots, even after two months practicing with it daily... I am really striving to get a good posture, open stance before shooting, getting the "barrel of the gun" position, bone alignment, anyways, everything Kisik Lee teaches on his "Total Archery" book, but I am having a hard time shooting this bow... I was wondering if that would be that case to try a longer bow...
Julio Aragao This may be an issue with your strength and technique than the bow. If you're struggling with a 40# bow, getting a longer 40#...will still be 40#, though the stacking effect will be less. 40# is very heavy for a beginner -- normally we wouldn't advise over 30# for someone starting out. Another thing you might want to do is to film yourself shooting and get some critique on your form before looking at purchasing different equipment.
stacking=limbs comeing inward not backward ---- forward propels the arrow inward does not (compounds use a pulley system to create the forward movement) so too short is bad (limbs come together) hunting bow lots of recurve means smaller bow as the limbs still go backwards as the curve unwinds bow just big enough = faster bow for your draw length than 1 thats longer faster bow = faster arrow = flatter trajectory=better for accurate shots as takes more movement to effect the vertical shot angle faster bow also = need for better shooting style slow bow better for developing shooting ability and style
This is my struggle, I want a nice looking wooden riser, but I need a 68-70" bow. Just because we want wood and old-school doesn't mean we don't want accuracy or that we intend to hunt. I wish manufacturers understood this.
There will be companies that can make you a bow, though it will of course cost more as it will be made to your specifications. Border Archery in Scotland make some lovely limbs and risers, and have some incredible limbs (HeX Limbs). They can go from 17" up to 25" risers in 2" increments if I recall correctly. You are able to choose the types and colours of wood used in the laminate up to a point as well, if you like that sort of thing.
So should I get the "full sized" 68" bow if I can, and a small one if there are no options? Or do you mean shorter is better than full size one for a newbie?
so...suppose I want to have a 66" bow, I have a chose between a 23" handle with M length limbs and a 25" handle with S length limbs. what is the difference?
available draw distance. longer limbs = longer draw distance. I believe its called stacking, where you feel a noticeable heavier draw if you go above the draw distance of your bow. i have a 26.5 draw distance, a 66in bow with short limbs gives me around 26in. which is nearly perfect for me. Any tall bois out there will not have as good a time using my bow, but its still completely serviceable for a beginner.
So, if I have a draw of 32.5" would a typical 62-64" bow be inside the generally okay entry level bow recommendation or manage to be legitimately too short? Ultimately, I'm feeling like it may be a moot point as I also don't see many 33" plus arrows offered around here to be able to reach my full draw very often, lol
You're oversized for the bow. You'll probably suffer a significant amount of arrow pinch and an uncomfortable amount of stacking. You'll be best off with a much longer bow (70"+).
+NUSensei Alright, found a brand online that makes affordable 70" wooden takedown recurve bows (Ragim Matrix) and is going to tryout the style of bow with that then decide if I want to save up for a Hoyt Horizon 25" riser or possibly even their 27" and go from there. Thanks!

I’m looking for a bow that would be a good crossover for small game hunting but also backyard and 3D archery. My draw length according to the equation is 31” and optimal draw weight for me is 45 pounds. Looking for a traditional off the shelf-shooting recurve bow. NUSensei I'm about 5.10 height. I've been shooting with 68 inch and 25 riser, my draw weight is 34 lbs, I won't be able to reach my anchor point and find that uncomfortable. I've checked my measurement, my draw length is 32.5. So the 70 inch limbs or 27 riser is better for my draw length?
Ok, so did the technique where I measure tip of finger to my other tip of finger, and divided it by 2.5. I got 26. But when I searched up the charts I got different answers and I got a bit confused. I want to be precise in buying my bow, so I'm wondering what my bow size would be? That's the bow size. I don't know your draw length unless you measure it, but you'll be suited to a 70" bow. Draw weight depends on how confident you are with your strength. 24# is a reasonable starting point.

Medieval times, brits weren't always tall and they have Longbow and English height was 5'6" average and with a draw weight of 100lbs avg. So find a bow that you like that meets the target range. yes guideline helps for beginners and became past time sport.
I am 176cm 5'9" long but have an arm span of around 186cm 6'1" so thats 73inches diveded by 2.5 gives a draw length of 29inches. So I bought a 25inch riser with medium limbs for a 68" bow. But I don't feel like I draw the bow full lenght. I even tried a anchor point so far back that I got a little string slap in the chest. Whould I have been better of with a 23" riser or short limbs? I have not yet had anyone measure my acctual draw lenght

So what happens to your form and performance if you are at the end of the chart (>31 inch draw length here although i'm not that tall) and shoot a 68 inch recurve targeting bow? Does it affect you or not that much? With me it basically means that 4 inches before i reach my anchorpoint the bow begins to stack throwing me off my routine and also giving me some kind of shot anticipation and additional handshock and reduced accuracy. But can i really blame all this on 4 inches that are missing in size? (i don't have the money right now to buy a 70 inch bow and the only ones i can lend at the range are 68 inches tops)

The "big" brands don't make recurves that small. The W&W Black Wolf is the smallest one that comes to mind. If you want shorter, you may want to look at the Tradtech bows.
I measured my draw length at around 29,5" using an arrow, will a 64" bow still be okay for me? I want to get a recurve for simple backyard target shooting, but the bow I have my eye on (Matrix Evo) is only available in 64" around here.

Nu Sensei, what if I use a bow that is larger than what is recommended for me. According to the suggestion box I should be using a 64-66 bow, but I use a 68. Could that have a negative effect on my shot?
I have a 68" bow (25" riser with medium limbs) and I have a 26" draw so I am losing some efficiency. However, I found the greatest inconvenience that affected my shot was the bowstring angle. The string was catching my chest on my bow arm as opposed to my 62" wood recurve. It forced me to adjust my anchor and weird stuff was happening so I bought a chest protector and it didn't matter as much. NUSensei's archery videos are very helpful watched almost all of them. Just wished I watched them before I bought my first olympic bow. Could have saved a few extra $$.

Hi I am getting a new riser and limbs but I can not find out how longthe medium size limb so how do I order a string do I have to wait till I get them my original. Bow was a martin saber but I thought my dominate. Hand is what I hold with but it is not right I am s right handed person but need a left handed bow I just do not want to make more mistakes I do not know if I will be able to sell the saber the new one is sf premium plus and the riser is sf premium plus 25 any info would be appreciated

You're not making a professional Olympic target bow. The charts are irrelevant. You can make a bow as big or as small as you want. What's more important is that you have a better understanding of the materials and methods used in bowyering. I don't do that sort of thing, but you should be able to find out or ask around (e.g. reddit /r/bowyer).

Why not? Aside from that, it 100% depends on what kind of bow you are intending to shoot. If you are just looking for a beginner-level or hunting bow, a 62" is fine.
I wanted a trad longbow, and the traditional rule for non recurve self bows is “height of archer plus a couple of inches when strung” my 71” bow is ~2” taller than me when it’s strung so basically the ideal size for a trad bow.

9 years old? Buy her a junior bow. You are making this sound more complicated than it should be. 66" is far too big for her. If she wants to do archery in her teenage years, then buy her a bigger bow.
Help me out please guys, cos I‘d love to know what size of bow I have. My wife and I both have Ragim bows - hers is a Wildcat and mine‘s a Matrix. Since I got a 68“ string delivered with mine and she got a 66“ string, I always thought that was the sizes of our bows. Having been shooting intermittently for a couple of years, but now starting to dedicate a bit more time to it, I found out about bow tuning and decided if I was going to do it right, I need to have accurate info about my bow length, draw length, draw weight, brace height etc. Right off the bat, I could see I was going to have problems, because the actual measured dimensions of our bows are as follows. Riser: 24“ (both) Bow, tip to tip, unstrung: Matrix 64“; Wildcat 62“ Bow, tip to tip, strung: Matrix 65 1/2“ at 8“ brace height; Wildcat 63 1/2“ at 7 1/2“ brace height. Does this mean, as it would appear to this novice, that I have a 64“ bow and my wife a 62“ bow? If so, can anyone explain to me why our string sizes are „supposedly“ 68“ and 66“ respectively. I‘d appreciate any help you can offer, as I‘d really like to try and understand the reasoning behind these apparently arbritary figures.
I really hope somebody has an answer for this. I'm looking to get my first bow and the one I have my eye on says it's 62" amo. Which means string length I guess and that's not what people actually refer to for the length of a bow?

My mistake was that I measured straight across tip to tip, whereas you need to mesure along the curve of the limbs. NUSensei thanks i sholud know this but you know i get a bit messed up in my head i havent shoot in 3 years .. but i started 1988 and endend 2012 and now are back again.. :) i had many many bows in my years last 4 bows were : sebastien flute riser and limbs , hoyt aerotech and g3 limbs , winwin inno cxt and expower limbs , hoyt hpx with formula f7 limbs, but of all bows i had under all years the bow i fall in love with is winwin... in my oppinion winwin are number one and hoyt number 2... i miss samick i dont see them anymore :(

This is based on the hand you draw the string with. If you draw with your right hand, you get a RH bow (i.e. the bow is held in the left hand and drawn with the right). All accessories are based off this concept.
Your right hand should be your draw hand. That said, the draw hand is better decided by eye dominance. This is usually, but not always, the same as the dominant hand. If you are cross-dominant, it may be easier to train your weak hand than to train your non-dominant eye.
Dear Sir Thank you for your videos , I have two questions right now ..I am using Recurve 48" bow 40lb (it is from Ragim factory) ..my length draw is 29" ..I use it feel so comfort I have no any bad experience with it until now , even I reach my anchor point (cheek) in easy way...Is that fine? or I will cause damage to my bow by time? > Other matter, My dominate eye is the left eye, my dominate arm is the right arm .. is that mean I am cross-dominant? any way even with this case I can hit perfectly a point in the target like 1 c.m by 1 c.m in easy way from distance (5 meters)... usually I look to the target with two eyes open...I feel fine like this so is it ok if I continue practice like this? Or I must try to practice my left arm to be the dominate arm instead of right arm? Thank you in advanced for your advice.

I went to an archery store and bough what they recommended, a 58 opm for me... I'm 5'2... I measured my drawlength etc and it all seemed to recommend 64 in and above. thank you for the video, at least i feel like I can still use my bow even though it might be a bit short.
i think archery store only recommend overstocked cheap bow to beginners. do ur own research, never trust seller XD. while i was hunting on my first bow. i found a omp explorer 2.0 62" 29lb RH. for 77 Canadian Dollars from amazon. imediately clicked buy. it will come in tomorrow, just hoping its not defective/openbox item.
chang hye jin must be around same size ,i'm sure hers is a 68" i find a 55lb 60" hunting bow less smooth and harder to pull than a 60lb 70" longbow .. pretty sure short bows compound draw weight

Well i do find some helpful tips to exactly measure your draw lenght (DL for short.) First, pickup your bow (obviously) then stab some cardboard to your arrow around 1/3 of the arrow, then go for your anchor point. The cardboard should be pushed by the bow when you get for your anchor point. Then measure the arrow from the nock to the cardboard. Aaaand done. Sorry if my english is bad.
i found a adult sized fiberglass recurve my dad bought in the late 70s . i started shooting it just for kicks and found that i enjoy the activity . im a seasoned firearm target shooter so i fell in love with the bow lol... i want to buy a proper sized recurve but i have no clue what brands to look at my budget is 150-200$ i also dont have a clue what the draw weight i need is.. i plan to shoot this bow over and over but not wanting to soft of a draw weight ... confused? good because i am lol.. great video

I am a beginner, as in, I have never used a bow before, and my goal is to eventually be good enough to shoot some small game that comes into my backyard. Thank you! This explains alot about my archery experience. I bought a 50lb samick sage for my first bow and I didn't realize it was to small for me. I'm 5'10" with a 69" wing span and probably have a 29.5-30 inch draw length. I kept getting skin ripped off of my pointer and middle finger and it was extremely difficult for me to hold full draw for longer than a second or two. I will get a longer bow now and see how that feels. Thanks for the great insight!
You could not hold your draw for a second? Then you are pulling too much for you to handle for the time

just drop the tension down to 20-25lbs , with your draws added tension youll be at around 50lbs total draw and you'll be able to hold it "forever". In contrast to your already set 50lbs your draw is fighting to add more lbs resulting in less muscle stamina to hold the draw weight.
I personally like shorter hunter style recurve bows in the 54"-56" range.. I'm short and have only a 25-26" normal draw. I have a couple 64"-68" recurve bows that I range with but the shorter bows go hunting with me. I have several compound bows and they too are all short. Pearson Equalizer 38" and a PSE Stalker 39" are my favorite. Both set at 50lbs so I'm legal in Georgia to hunt with.

My input, imo size only really matters mainly on self bows, in which case you have to be careful with the short bows and use a shorter draw length, modern recurves and longbows are pretty resilient in terms of draw length. Some stacking will happen with some shorter bows though but it depends.
For modern bows, it's not so much a matter of whether bow can handle it. For a target archer, using a bow of the wrong length can make it difficult to anchor properly.
so I'm a little confused my finger to finger measures at 72, which means my drawl should be 28.8 which means my bow should be 68. I know you're saying bow size doesn't matter but i still want the ideal size for me.

Great video! Super helpful information. However, I still have some hesitation in buying too short a bow. I'm 6'2" and have calculated my draw length to be about 30". I'm planning to hunt with a recurve this fall, and so far, the longest bows I've been shown at the two archery shops I've visited are 62". At 45-50 lbs, this seems fine, but at 55 lbs (which is the bow I like the most right now), I'm not able to fully draw it back yet (once I’m able to, with stacking it’ll be around ≈59 lbs). I haven't purchased anything, but what I'm hoping to do (if a 62" bow is doable for my draw length) is to purchase extra limbs that are rated at 35-40 lbs for getting my technique down.
What are your thoughts? I can't seem to find anything for hunting past 64" (60 and 62 seem to be much more common) and all of the bows that seem to be closest to what I need are more than what I was planning to spend. I'm fine with this as long as it's something that I can use for years to come.
Would seeking out a 64” bow be ideal for my situation or is 62” at the right draw weight totally fine?

I made a mistake when buying traditional recurve. I bought bow which was 32 inches in max draw lenght guaranteed by manufacturer (i have 33 inch max draw lenght) , but was too short in size, so I was hardly able to pull it more 28 inches before it started to stack the draw weight like crazy...
Personally I like shorter bows, I use a 60" bow. 17"riser, medium limbs.
I have a 68 target bow and I wish I had gone with a 23"riser and short limbs, this of course comes completely from experience.
Hell my favorite bow to shoot is my 54"Mongolian.
The only true way to tell is to shoot many bows of many lengths
I measured my draw length by getting a measuring tape and holding it like i'm drawing a bow.
I did this and compared it to the "(arm length)/2.5" method, and I only got about a 1" difference, which is pretty negligible for buying a beginner bow. I don't think it's a terrible method for measuring draw length.
Thank you for this video. I'd never given size much thought before. I am actually a larper, so I am shooting (with padded safety arrows) at moving targets. I don't know what kind of bow would be optimal for me; for safety, most LARP systems impose a max draw of around 30lbs, sometimes 25lbs.
According to a rough measurement, my draw length is about 26". According to what's written (actually On the bow) it says '28lbs 62", 26lbs 66"' I am approx. 5'3" tall, making the current bow length closer to the 62" mark. The limbs are ones I bought separately for it because the draw weight was too high with the ones it had. No idea of the origins of the bow as I got it secondhand.

I am a beginner archer, 6' tall, and I have a draw length of 29.5". I own a 40# Martin Panther Take-Down recurve bow, which is 62" long. Exactly as you said, it is a hunting bow, and Martin doesn't sell it in lengths longer than 64" (which I couldn't find when I bought mine). One thing I noticed was that even using an olympic recurve sight and setting it in the higher position in the scale, the arrows get too high in the target. Also, I feel that it's too heavy when drawing, and I get really shaky after a few shots, even after two months practicing with it daily... I am really striving to get a good posture, open stance before shooting, getting the "barrel of the gun" position, bone alignment, anyways, everything Kisik Lee teaches on his "Total Archery" book, but I am having a hard time shooting this bow... I was wondering if that would be that case to try a longer bow...
Julio Aragao This may be an issue with your strength and technique than the bow. If you're struggling with a 40# bow, getting a longer 40#...will still be 40#, though the stacking effect will be less. 40# is very heavy for a beginner -- normally we wouldn't advise over 30# for someone starting out. Another thing you might want to do is to film yourself shooting and get some critique on your form before looking at purchasing different equipment.

---- forward propels the arrow inward does not (compounds use a pulley system to create the forward movement)
so too short is bad (limbs come together)
hunting bow lots of recurve means smaller bow as the limbs still go backwards as the curve unwinds
bow just big enough = faster bow for your draw length than 1 thats longer
faster bow = faster arrow = flatter trajectory=better for accurate shots as takes more movement to effect the vertical shot angle
faster bow also = need for better shooting style
slow bow better for developing shooting ability and style
This is my struggle, I want a nice looking wooden riser, but I need a 68-70" bow.
Just because we want wood and old-school doesn't mean we don't want accuracy or that we intend to hunt.

There will be companies that can make you a bow, though it will of course cost more as it will be made to your specifications. Border Archery in Scotland make some lovely limbs and risers, and have some incredible limbs (HeX Limbs). They can go from 17" up to 25" risers in 2" increments if I recall correctly. You are able to choose the types and colours of wood used in the laminate up to a point as well, if you like that sort of thing.

The limbs won't break. However, the bow will be very uncomfortable to use due to finger pinch and stacking. I would suggest a larger bow.

available draw distance. longer limbs = longer draw distance. I believe its called stacking, where you feel a noticeable heavier draw if you go above the draw distance of your bow.
i have a 26.5 draw distance, a 66in bow with short limbs gives me around 26in. which is nearly perfect for me. Any tall bois out there will not have as good a time using my bow, but its still completely serviceable for a beginner.

You're oversized for the bow. You'll probably suffer a significant amount of arrow pinch and an uncomfortable amount of stacking. You'll be best off with a much longer bow (70"+).
+NUSensei Alright, found a brand online that makes affordable 70" wooden takedown recurve bows (Ragim Matrix) and is going to tryout the style of bow with that then decide if I want to save up for a Hoyt Horizon 25" riser or possibly even their 27" and go from there.

Not really. Short bows will tend to stack, and hunting bows are not different. Short hunting bows will stack more than longer hunting bows.

That is correct. Or you can get a 25" riser with short limbs.

Bows are measured for their total length, not limb length. A 68" bow is 68" long; it doesn't have 68" limbs.

62" is fine for most people. 54" is generally a better fit for teenagers, but still usable.

That's the bow size. I don't know your draw length unless you measure it, but you'll be suited to a 70" bow. Draw weight depends on how confident you are with your strength. 24# is a reasonable starting point.

Medieval times, brits weren't always tall and they have Longbow and English height was 5'6" average and with a draw weight of 100lbs avg. So find a bow that you like that meets the target range. yes guideline helps for beginners and became past time sport.
I am 176cm 5'9" long but have an arm span of around 186cm 6'1" so thats 73inches diveded by 2.5 gives a draw length of 29inches. So I bought a 25inch riser with medium limbs for a 68" bow. But I don't feel like I draw the bow full lenght. I even tried a anchor point so far back that I got a little string slap in the chest. Whould I have been better of with a 23" riser or short limbs?

If you're buying a traditional bow, it doesn't really matter that much.
So what happens to your form and performance if you are at the end of the chart (>31 inch draw length here although i'm not that tall) and shoot a 68 inch recurve targeting bow? Does it affect you or not that much? With me it basically means that 4 inches before i reach my anchorpoint the bow begins to stack throwing me off my routine and also giving me some kind of shot anticipation and additional handshock and reduced accuracy. But can i really blame all this on 4 inches that are missing in size? (i don't have the money right now to buy a 70 inch bow and the only ones i can lend at the range are 68 inches tops)

The "big" brands don't make recurves that small. The W&W Black Wolf is the smallest one that comes to mind. If you want shorter, you may want to look at the Tradtech bows.

It's going to be a tough one. Doable, but it depends on how well you can handle heavier weights.

Nu Sensei, what if I use a bow that is larger than what is recommended for me. According to the suggestion box I should be using a 64-66 bow, but I use a 68. Could that have a negative effect on my shot?
I have a 68" bow (25" riser with medium limbs) and I have a 26" draw so I am losing some efficiency. However, I found the greatest inconvenience that affected my shot was the bowstring angle. The string was catching my chest on my bow arm as opposed to my 62" wood recurve. It forced me to adjust my anchor and weird stuff was happening so I bought a chest protector and it didn't matter as much.
NUSensei's archery videos are very helpful watched almost all of them. Just wished I watched them before I bought my first olympic bow. Could have saved a few extra $$.

Hi I am getting a new riser and limbs but I can not find out how longthe medium size limb so how do I order a string do I have to wait till I get them my original. Bow was a martin saber but I thought my dominate. Hand is what I hold with but it is not right I am s right handed person but need a left handed bow I just do not want to make more mistakes I do not know if I will be able to sell the saber the new one is sf premium plus and the riser is sf premium plus 25 any info would be appreciated

You're not making a professional Olympic target bow. The charts are irrelevant. You can make a bow as big or as small as you want. What's more important is that you have a better understanding of the materials and methods used in bowyering. I don't do that sort of thing, but you should be able to find out or ask around (e.g. reddit /r/bowyer).

68" bow is fine, if you're shooting a target recurve. If you're shooting a beginner bow or hunting bow, you can use 62" comfortable too.

Why not? Aside from that, it 100% depends on what kind of bow you are intending to shoot. If you are just looking for a beginner-level or hunting bow, a 62" is fine.

I wanted a trad longbow, and the traditional rule for non recurve self bows is “height of archer plus a couple of inches when strung” my 71” bow is ~2” taller than me when it’s strung so basically the ideal size for a trad bow.

9 years old? Buy her a junior bow. You are making this sound more complicated than it should be. 66" is far too big for her. If she wants to do archery in her teenage years, then buy her a bigger bow.

60" is OK. Personally I would go for a 54" or a 58" bow, but 60" is OK.
Help me out please guys, cos I‘d love to know what size of bow I have.
My wife and I both have Ragim bows - hers is a Wildcat and mine‘s a Matrix. Since I got a 68“ string delivered with mine and she got a 66“ string, I always thought that was the sizes of our bows. Having been shooting intermittently for a couple of years, but now starting to dedicate a bit more time to it, I found out about bow tuning and decided if I was going to do it right, I need to have accurate info about my bow length, draw length, draw weight, brace height etc.
Right off the bat, I could see I was going to have problems, because the actual measured dimensions of our bows are as follows.
Riser: 24“ (both)
Bow, tip to tip, unstrung: Matrix 64“; Wildcat 62“
Bow, tip to tip, strung: Matrix 65 1/2“ at 8“ brace height; Wildcat 63 1/2“ at 7 1/2“ brace height.
Does this mean, as it would appear to this novice, that I have a 64“ bow and my wife a 62“ bow?
If so, can anyone explain to me why our string sizes are „supposedly“ 68“ and 66“ respectively.
I‘d appreciate any help you can offer, as I‘d really like to try and understand the reasoning behind these apparently arbritary figures.
I really hope somebody has an answer for this. I'm looking to get my first bow and the one I have my eye on says it's 62" amo. Which means string length I guess and that's not what people actually refer to for the length of a bow?
@@RalphRoberts1 I asked the question in a forum elswhere and got an answer. Easiest way to give you the info is just to post this link. My mistake was that I measured straight across tip to tip, whereas you need to mesure along the curve of the limbs. Happy shooting ;)

my drawlenght is 28,5 " my bow is 25" riser and 68 limbs ( 34 pounds) is that "to short" should i have 70 limbs? or will that just like you say dont get the right lengt for my draw.. it feels like when im in anchorpoint its just just a litttle bit heavier than just before.. i shoot Inno cxt 25" and SF elite Carbon foam limbs and winact limbs... and i have my cklicker in the middle of the plate i can moce it forwards for loger arrows ( like my carbon one shafts 29 " from nock to end of the point and my x7 1914 is 28,5
You're actually right in the middle of the recommended size for your draw length.

NUSensei thanks i sholud know this but you know i get a bit messed up in my head i havent shoot in 3 years .. but i started 1988 and endend 2012 and now are back again.. :) i had many many bows in my years last 4 bows were : sebastien flute riser and limbs , hoyt aerotech and g3 limbs , winwin inno cxt and expower limbs , hoyt hpx with formula f7 limbs, but of all bows i had under all years the bow i fall in love with is winwin... in my oppinion winwin are number one and hoyt number 2... i miss samick i dont see them anymore :(
Hello there, I wanted to ask if it's no problem, which size I should use. I'm taller than most of the people, I'm 183cm Tall and my draw length is 30-31". Thanks in advance, btw I'm training with Longbows, idk if it's the same measurement for longbows and for recurve.
They use different measurements. It really doesn't matter that much, but a longer bow will suit you better.

Wait..... I did the thing with the arm length and dividing by 2.5 and mine came to 25 (that means that I need a 64 inch bow) but I am 63 inches tall..... is the bow meant to be taller than me?...... please answer

how can i tell if i get a right hand or left?
This is based on the hand you draw the string with. If you draw with your right hand, you get a RH bow (i.e. the bow is held in the left hand and drawn with the right). All accessories are based off this concept.
So if im naturally right handed, should my right be my draw hand or my bow hand
Your right hand should be your draw hand. That said, the draw hand is better decided by eye dominance. This is usually, but not always, the same as the dominant hand. If you are cross-dominant, it may be easier to train your weak hand than to train your non-dominant eye.

Other matter, My dominate eye is the left eye, my dominate arm is the right arm .. is that mean I am cross-dominant? any way even with this case I can hit perfectly a point in the target like 1 c.m by 1 c.m in easy way from distance (5 meters)... usually I look to the target with two eyes open...I feel fine like this so is it ok if I continue practice like this? Or I must try to practice my left arm to be the dominate arm instead of right arm? Thank you in advanced for your advice.
There is no risk to your bow. You are cross-dominant. If you can shoot fine with both eyes, then you have nothing to worry about.
