    I am so glad I have come across your channel. It was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Intelligent, practical, and still entertaining coverage of topics relevant to me. I shot a fairly nice recurve bow as a youngster, even competed (poorly) in a county fair competition. So, life happens, and now 20some odd years later I am looking to get back into it. Purely as a backyard hobby, this time. One that I can share someday soon with my ever-expanding family. My wife and I have been blessed yet again with a THIRD baby girl. Ooph. I grew up an only child, but I have to say that I have never been happier, or more exciting to go to bed just to see what tomorrow brings. Anywho, I didn't mean to talk this long. I really just wanted to say thanks, and I hope you and yours are well! 🤙😊

    One thing you should consider, especially with trad bows, is riser length.
    For example the Black Hunter in this video and the Samick Sage are both 62" bows. However the Sage has a 19" riser and the BH has a 15" riser. That means to make the same length bow the Sage uses short limbs and the BH has much longer limbs. This makes the BH far smoother at longer draw lengths than the Sage, for the same legnth bow.

    The biggest factors to take into account I would say are draw length and the length of the working limb which will affect the maximum draw length and when you feel stacking occur.
    The issues with picking a bow that is too short are obviously the chance of it breaking and the amount of stacking (sudden rise in the relationship of draw weight to distance moved) felt as you near you full draw this can lead to strain on you and the bow leading to inconsistency of power on the shot. Also the string pinch from the more acute angle of the string at the nock can make it just too uncomfortable to shoot, this is of course less of an issue for a bow designed to be shot thumb release as you are not trying to force three fingers into the same area on the string.
    Picking a bow that is too long for you is not going to have the risk of breaking it but comes with the issue that you are possibly not making the limbs work hard enough not drawing them into their most efficient zone just before stacking starts therefore not capitalising on the energy they can deliver, this is a trade off though that may be desirable with additional stability that a longer bow can give.
    Generally a good start is to see if the bow maker gives recommended draw lengths or maximum draw lengths for their products.

    • @johnbarron4265
      @johnbarron4265 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The length of the riser also makes a big difference in how far the limbs flex. For example, long limbs on a 13" riser (58" AMO bow) would probably start noticeably stacking at around the same draw length as short limbs on a 25" riser (66" AMO bow), all else being equal. The 58" AMO bow might be more practical in certain hunting settings, while the 66" AMO bow will certainly give more speed, stability, and efficiency.
      Limb pad angles on a given riser also play a role in the sweet spot of the draw force curve of a particular limb when paired with said riser. Though there is not too much variation among different risers, as most fall in the 15-20 degree range.
      On the topic of limb breakage risk, laminated ILF limbs, even shorts, tend to be quite robust and capable of handling draw lengths well beyond what the vast majority of archers will naturally shoot, especially on a full-length target riser. 90+% of limb failures are simply the culmination of accumulated damage resulting from unfavorably harsh storage conditions, impacts, dry-firing, or shooting underweight arrows, not from being drawn a couple of inches beyond their sweet spot. That being said, one can still lose out on their bow's performance potential by overdrawing a short limb, just as well as underdrawing a long limb. The ideal limb length, from a purely performance standpoint, is the one that stores the most energy under the draw force curve at the archer's preferred draw length and draw weight on the fingers when using a reasonable brace height.

    Good Video, my favourite bow is my 45 inch Turkish, very unforgiving, the slightest deviation from good form, really show, I've had Target Archery and even a 120lb longbow in the past, this Turkish Bow, hits hard enough to use for hunting, but is challenging even at short distance, I've also had compound hunting bows in the past, limited in application and where I could use them, i.e. not in the back Garden!

  • @vepristhorn8278
    @vepristhorn8278 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Lots of good info, wished I'd had it when I started instead of piecing it together over the years.
    On stacking you can offset stacking by getting nicer limbs, I put Uuhka target limbs on my 17" Satori riser for a 60" bow, I have never felt any stacking even though my 29" draw takes the limbs into the area for stacking and I did gel stacking when using cheaper starter limbs. I have had my taller friends shoot my bow as well and they felt no stacking.
    On the length of bow some of it is also preference over time you will find you prefer the feel of a longer or shorter bow, I prefer shorter, and may shade down a size for this. My current target bow is 68" but I have found through trial and error that 66" works better for me and will be getting short limbs to make this happen when I can afford them.
    Request: Nu could you readdress clickers, I find that of all the devices I have the most issue with transitioning from barebow to olympic is the clicker. Getting it set properly and keep the blasted thing from moving.

      Chances are you'll go through some limbs until you find what feels right for you, if you like the feel of a shorter bow you will have to deal with stacking until you're ready to commit to expensive limbs
      If your interested in hunting then you'll want to find a way to shade shorter for easier movement in the wild

    great info, but i have a question. let's say that i'm looking at a 68" recurve as you talked about in the video. i've noticed that risers and limbs come in different lengths, so how do i go about choosing the proper riser & limb lengths to add up to the 68" overall (for example, do i choose a 25" riser and a short set of limbs or a 17" riser and a long set of limbs)? or does it matter? i'm sure you've already got a video explaining this, but so far i haven't found it. so, if you could copy/paste the link that might save you time rather than re-hashing all that info from a previous video. thanks again!!

      AMO measure is for measuring bow strings. So it's the length of the string plus 3.5 inches (between 3 and 4 usually). So for a 62" bow you will need a 58" bow string, depending on the recommended brace height of the bow. Have a nice day and take care.

    I'd actually recommend standard 25 inch takedown recurve riser size, because it allows starting with lower draw weights.
    Many hunting kind of takedowns have min draw weight of 25 pounds due limited limb options (even with ILF) and shorter riser (which causes higher draw weight).

      AMO draw length is obtained by measuring the distance from the throat or deepest point of the grip to the arrow nock at full draw, which is termed the "true draw length", or "pivot point draw length", and adding 1.75". The 1.75" is an arbitrary number that's supposed to roughly account for the thickness depth of the grip at its deepest point. However, every bow is different, and the depth of the grip will vary. So just use the true draw length plus 1.75" and you'll be good to go.

    At 5:35, you stated that a longer bow is more forgiving whereas a shorter one will perform better. Can you elaborate more on that? For example, by "more forgiving", do you mean that it is just easier to draw or do you mean that you can shoot fairly accurately with less skill (beginner)? And by "perform better", do you simply mean that it just fires quicker, stronger, and more precise (but requires some degree of skill)?
    I'm buying my first bow (online). I am 5'6" (167cm) with a draw length of 26.5" (67cm). I'm going with a trad recurve (30lb. draw wt.) . I want a better performing bow but as I am a beginner, I may need the more forgiving one. I'm leaning toward the 62" and reluctant to go for the 68". What would be your recommendation? Hopefully you see this comment and can respond.

What S-limbs from nominal poundage point would I need to get the same OTF-poundage as my 70” setup. Goal is to,use the same 500 spine arrows and keep shooting while ranges are closed.

      This is a very bad idea, nothing about the shot will feel the same going from Long to Short limbs. If anything it will make you shoot worse when you switch back as you've got used to the terrible feeling the shorts will give you. Find somewhere you have the headroom even if you only have 2m to shoot it will be better for your form than switching limbs.

    Is that just gonna come down to stability vs snappiness then?

    This explained a question that has been bothering me since I started archery two months ago. Why does my club only have 62" bows? I felt that I needed something longer, having a 29" draw length. So why did the shop keep pushing me at a 62" bow? And why don't they even carry low priced bows that are 68" or 70"? And why doesn't some of the staff know anything about ILF bows for target shooting? Now I know. They are focused on hunting bows. They have an indoor range for practice but most shooters are shooting compound. They view the recurve bow as a step toward a real hunting bow - a compound. But I'm not going to be a hunter. I'm in it to practice form, breathing, release, and to rehab a shoulder injury that requires the same back tension as archery. The people at the shop are great and will help me with whatever I want to learn, but now I understand that they aren't target shooters. Thank you so much! They actually like the fact that I ask so many questions. I have a 70" ILF setup on order and this video clearly explained so much.

      Longer person can use shorter bows, no problem. For begginer, it doesn't affect that much as they are learning basics. 62" is average length for begginer bows. As you progress, you will buy your own bow anyway, then you will buy the bow you prefer.

    So I am 6'4 with a 6'8 wingspan. I've heard that I would be better off getting the 64" (Samick "XL") version of the bow I'm leaning towards rather than the standard 62". Any thoughts would be sincerely appreciated! 🙏

    If I'm a 6'1" to 6'2" tall guy with a draw length of 29, would a 62" recurve bow be wrong for me? would a 64" bow be better?

  • @arminvanbuuren883
    @arminvanbuuren883 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wait, I'm confused. I'm 6 ft tall, and my draw length is about 29" so I guess a 68" target recurve is the right size for me. But if I want to buy a traditional recurve bow, for target shooting as well, shouldn't I get a 68" one again? Why should I go for a smaller one with the danger of stacking etc.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There isn't really a "danger" of stacking. A shorter bow will feel different to a longer bow. The point of the charts for target bows is that they try to present the most consistent draw-force curve so that slight variations won't change the velocity too much. Shorter bows are a bit more punishing to mistakes, which is less desirable for precision target shooting, but not as vital if you're not doing long distance competitive shooting.

    • @arminvanbuuren883
      @arminvanbuuren883 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NUSensei So your opinion is to go with the general rule of thumb for traditional recurves and select the 62" bow? If I pick the 68" one will that have any implications cause it was made for way bigger draw lengths?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arminvanbuuren883 There won't be anything negative about choosing a longer bow in terms of shooting it. Most traditional bows are designed to be used in the field, so an excessively long bow can be awkward to carry around. Target bows are intended to be shot in controlled environments, so the extra length and weight are beneficial rather than detrimental.

    Im looking at buying a bow, i have shot air rifles and slingshots before, and i have some questions which are making me hesitate
    i have measured my wingspan, and its 26.5", so i would be fine buying a bow with a 28" standard draw length
    I have seen where, for every inch less than the given bows draw length, that you actually draw the arrow when firing, the draw weight goes down, so my next question is, should i buy a slightly heavier draw bow to compensate for my 1.5" less draw length?
    Draw weights confuse me, theres so many contradictory videos, half of the videos say get a lower draw weight bow because you will be happier firing it, and half say get a heavier draw weight bow because after you have built up the muscles to fire it, you will be bored because it wont feel very good after so long
    What would you suggest?

      Might be a bit on the 'eavy side of things, I'm a learner myself and shoot 25 lbs (and I'm a bit taller at 6') - but that also depends heavily on general fitness etc - as long as you can keep good form the size and the weight seem not too out of the ordinary of what I'm seeing on the parcours/at the range

    I'm looking to buy a bow to have a mess around and possibly do some hunting down the line, I'm 6f 3, if I grab a tape measure and pull it back to a comfortable length its about 35/6 inch although I can pull back to way past to 40 or so inches, does arm length matter in buying of the bow, or do you just pull short. obviously a longer bow has a bigger pull., sounds like you need to try before buying, like getting good shoes.

    When you say a bow is 68" long, is that the overall length of the bow from tip to tip, or do you measure the length from nock to nock, if so, do you measure from the longest point of nock to nock?

    • @johnbarron4265
      @johnbarron4265 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically you measure at the shoulders of the nock where the string loops would rest when strung. That's the length that matters when the string is on the bow.

  • @christianbrienesse

    I have a different question, not sure anyone will reply or not but…can you add something to your string to determine top of the bowstring (or bottom)? I know the loop is bigger for the top but on my practice bow I use the nocking point to work it out (the different colour on the string is shorter on the top side) as the loops are sometimes hard to tell the difference.
    Thanks. 😊

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, that's not unusual. If you have a nocking point, it's almost always going to be asymmetrical on the string, so you can tell which way is up.

    Can't you hold a tape measure and then pull it back to your anchor point?

    • @johnbarron4265
      @johnbarron4265 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you already have a good feel for what your optimal anchor point is, then yes, that method will get you in the right ballpark on your draw length. On the other hand, if you're just starting out, the best thing you can do is get your hands on a bow, get a draw check ruler arrow, and practice drawing the bow several times with the arrow in front of a camera or somebody to help read the markings on the arrow until you get a consistent, repeatable draw length measurement. You might be able to do this at a local archery club or shop for a small fee.

    If a 58" or 60" hunting bowing creates a arrow pinch angle, why not just use a quick release! This can also help to add a little length so as not to the draw too far, which should help to limit vertical draw extra poundage as well!👊😇👌

      Depends on your draw length. If it’s around 31 inch, 62-64 inch hunting recurve will work. This is much of personal preference, what length you woule like. For target recurve, probably 70 inch.

      I had an Xceed (25” riser) but at the time felt it was too heavy at the hand and that I wasn’t getting enough out of my limbs due to a lower draw weight and being generally weaker.
      After more than a year with my 64” set up and having gotten stronger I do want to try it again to see if anything’s changed in terms of handling.
      I did notice that the 64” set up is smoother for me where as the 66” was stackier with the same limbs (this was more than a year ago tho so I may be misremembering something important) - which is really weird because you’d expect the opposite. 64” for some reason just felt more comfortable to draw when I made my switch.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The misconception is that bow charts (which are based on height or draw length) are universal. However, the bow charts are only for target recurve sizes, which misleads people into thinking that their traditional or hunting bows are too small. The type of bow is the first consideration. Draw length is second.
