    Thanks again for your video! I can definitely see now why this game is highly ranked. I can also see that the playtime can be long, but with the right group this can definitely be an experience.
    It's worthy to be in any collection. Will look for it in future math trades, or in the secondary market.

    Such a great game. Even if it's only played once a year, I'd keep it for those moments. :)

    I've watched this and you play-through of Nations. Both intrigue me for different reasons. TTA seems to have lots more bookkeeping than most would like in a game. I'm leaning more towards Nations though because it has a solo option. As you mentioned you both are slow players and I personally would not feel that these games would be too 'Slow' per say. I'm intrigued by TTA because of all the options you have yet nations seems to have more of a 'Deal with what comes out' Aspect of the game. That is to say, you couldn't think 'hey I will go military this time around!' In nations I see that not every card for each era is used which brings out the randomness I love for re-playability sake. TTA it looks like you would see every card in each 'age'. I think that's what makes the game so long. I watched both play-throughs and you hadn't even fone through the first era after antiquities.As always great insight on all games I'm interested in. Always enjoy watching your run throughs.

    Rich, I've been watching your vids for a long time now and enjoyed every one of them. Because I'm stationed here in Okinawa, shipping takes a little longer than usual to arrive so purchasing the right game for my group is absolutely critical. Even if it's from a 2 player standpoint, I'd like to say thanks for doing these gameplays/thoughts. Semper Fi!

    It is SUCH a good game... but it's true that I never get to play it as much as I want due to the length. I keep really wanting to play it with exactly 2 of my friends, too, which also makes it tricky... i mean, I have a lot of two-player only games that I'll play with just one friend... and if I have 3 to play with, this game gets a bit too long. But it's so good!

    Thanks for doing this, I really appreciate you going out and buying it just so you can show us how it plays :) I'm still really on the fence about this though. The duration puts me off, but I like that player interaction doesn't make it suffer. However, I also really enjoy Sid Meier's Civ: the board game, but I will admit it isn't a perfect simulation. Have you tried any solo variants? Would it be worth getting for those alone?

    Is this game still good or are there "better" alternatives? I like games like Anno or Civ (mainly because the city building, not the military aspect) on the computer.

    Unfortunately it looks like Nations unseated this game for radho. But the more I watch this video the more I understand the depth of this game. Thank you!

      would really like to hear your thoughts on Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization also. Since they changed to play more smooth and fast, how does it compares to Nations...

    Except it's replaced now by nations? My fiance want a good civ game and I think we have gamed just long enough to handle it, but I don't think we have more than 2 hours to devote on the weekends. Nations or this is my question. I've wanted this for sometime

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andy V if length of play is an issue, then there's no competion: nations is quite a bit shorter than TTA :)

      HerbJon I had a chance to play both now and have Nations. I personally love TTA better, however I have more enjoyment of the civ experience playing Nations with the SO because it is a little more streamline. To scratch that itch Nations seems to do a fine job, but something about TTA was just an experience that I really enjoyed. It would go to the back of the gaming shelf unfortunately due to less plays in the year like my sad TI3..poor fellow hasn't seen a game day in over a year. I must mention my local store was liquidating them so $40 for Nations seemed like a steal with a trade in brought it down to $32 and I really can't beat that for an overpriced civ game

    it is better to play it online. Only take u 1 hr for a 4 persons game if all are expert players.

    Vlaada might be a good designer but he only makes games for people that are long-term unemployed. DP, DL, it's the same trick every time. Nice to watch, and the tHought of playing is pleasing. But never IRL.

      +Grim Madder it means i play almost no games (long or short) more than 2 or 3 times. that is, i get and learn the game, then play it a couple of times, then i film the runthrough, and then it's lucky if it gets played even once for the next year or two...

    • @LTdrumma
      @LTdrumma 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** so you never have time to play a game outside of the ones you do for runthroughs?

  • @scottsmartky

    I'm sorry, but this game is horrible. There are 2 War cards that are so broken (one steals your Prestige and gives it to them meaning at least a 20 point swing and the other just wipes your buildings leaving you an hour to waste to finish the game) that they ruin the game unless you devote a ton into military. That would be great IF you then drew one of those 2 broken cards (there are multiples of both), but it isn't guaranteed. Why in the hell does war hit you twice? Yep, 40+ point swings are just grand. Seriously, if you've devoted some to military and draw one of those 2 war cards, you're going to win 99% of the time (especially the prestige one). Nations is so much better unless BGA puts in the Peaceful variant you used Radho. Wasting 2+ hours on a complete (long) game that one card determines who wins and loses is just a waste of time.

      or build up your military...................

    • @scottsmartky
      @scottsmartky 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes because in a card game you can always get whatever cards you want, and you'll always get those war cards right when you need it because focusing on one thing instead of 3 others is a winning strategy. Sheesh.

    • @thurin84
      @thurin84 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      the challenge is making due when you dont get the card you think you need. you have to think on youre feet and come up with an alternate strategy. and i dont recall saying focus only on military.

    • @scottsmartky
      @scottsmartky 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's the problem with that. If you see someone running away with military, there is literally no stopping it, and your only hope is that none of the great war cards come out because the game is over if it does. That's the problem with the game. You can do all the strategizing you want, but that will be the end result. Peaceful variant is the only way the game doesn't suck.

    • @thurin84
      @thurin84 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      if someone is running away militarily you maintain parity. if you can keep somewhat near them militarily, hold onto a war card or 2 yourself and if they hit you and sacrifice their army you hold onto yours and hit them back on your turn before they can rebuild. if you cant maintain parity you build up producing victory so you still outscore them. rarely, once in a blue moon you can do neither but thats the breaks. there are workarounds for most developments if you look for them. its all about being versatile with what the cards give you. while the peaceful variant is an interesting alternative i think its the one that sucks because you have much less ability to influence other players ability to generate victory points. the game only sucks if you let it suck. theres always an alternative strategy if what you want or planned for doesnt come to fruition.
