  • Today I play around with the idea of cheap brews. I make up a split batch, one half very cheap and the other with a bit extra.
    I used a Home Brand Lager tin as the base for these brews. I added 100gm of dextrose to each half before pitchingyeast to adjust gravity.
    The cost of each as a full batch would be:
    Batch 1:
    Tin $8.23
    BE1 $6.00
    Dex $0.80
    Hops $2.00
    Caps $1.20
    Priming $0.50
    Total = $18.73.....$7.50 per carton.
    Batch 2:
    Tin $8.23
    Dry Malt $16.00
    Dex $0.80
    Hops $2.50
    Yeast $7.50
    Total = $35.03...$14.00 per carton.
    Reusing yeast from a previous batch would have been ideal to save more dollars.....$27.53 for the batch....$11.00 a carton.
    Starting gravity on both 1.037.
    Expected ABV. 4.2% in the bottle.

    Good video John. I would cry paying $16kg for malt, i buy it at a homebrew shop for $7kg. You can definitely make a good beer out of K&K, i usually spend roughly $45 with with grain additions etc and it turns out great. But I'm stepping up to AG now, just acquiring my gear at the moment and should be brewing AG in the next couple of months. Cheers

      hey David. where do you get your malt from. I can't find it much under $8.50 a kilo, even online.

      Hoppydays has capped shipping @ $15 John, so if you ever need a fair amount of hops grains etc it works out quite cheap. I live in country S.A and he is by far the cheapest for postage than anyone else that i've seen.

      that's good to know. Have ordered from them before but did not know about the capped shipping.

    Excellent experimental lol. I found using the homebrand I only do a 19l brew instead of 23lt and get a bit better beer too

      cheers Scott. This video is more in honor of a fellow brewer who has recently converted from Kits to All Grain. Constantly telling people how good his Home Brand Lager was....thought I had to give it a go in some form and might as well make it edumactional at the same time.

    have you tried to make it with just 1kg sugar.. seems to taste nicer than dextrose
