I wrote my Master's Essay on the performative and constructed nature of identity and how it is contextual and dynamic, and intersects with language, emotion and narrative storytelling. I used Travis Willingham's performance of Grog as a demonstration of how one can create and perform an identity. Why Travis felt stupider/more awkward? Because Identity is basically a bunch of stories in a trenchcoat labelled "narrative". And when you're playing a character so deeply like that, you're taking on their stories. And stories about your life are no more or less real than those of DnD (medically done the memories are even stored in the same part of the brain). Stories refer to what happened in the past and the past doesn't exist anymore, it's an abstract concept. So playing Grog he has this comfortable set of stories, a few narratives you could say, that comprise the identity of Grog, that he picks up and wears every Thursday for years. That can't really just be put down like it's nothing, there's crossover. Some of those stories linger. Why does that matter or make him feel dumber? Because identity is how we relate to the world. It's the contexts we use to make sense of things. It's like we navigate by the stars. Distance and direction in relation to them, yknow. It affects how we perceive, experience, feel, think, everything. So by having those sticky Grog identities, it is literally impacting how he perceives, thinks and feels. Hopefully once I've cleaned it up a bit more I can publish it =)
I've experienced thst with some different characters, only being really able to think of approaches and solutions in their terms. You play differently when you're a combat monster as opposed to a political swindler, and not just because of relative strengths and weaknesses.

The way that these guys can talk so intelligently about their characters emotions that even their character isn't aware of, or react in different ways in character than they would IRL is INCREDIBLE I mean I know they're actors, but still that's impressive.

Regardless, what I originally wrote is based on words that do indeed exist, so let's not get pedantic.

The (somewhat flawed) logic is to gauge whether he likes YOU or just general female attention. If he flirts with your friend he's just looking for something brief and/or shallow, but if he doesn't flirt back it indicates specific interest in you. Never really did this sort of thing, but had plenty of friends who did. It's mostly a way for the person to avoid misunderstanding and subsequent heartbreak.
