How to make LM317 variable DC Power Supply with circuit diagram

  • In this LM317 project, I have shown how to make LM317 variable DC Power Supply with the complete circuit diagram. I have made the LM 317 circuit on the zero PCB and also share the PCB layout so that you can easily design this adjustable power supply using the LM317 voltage regulator and Transformer.
    Download and print the PCB layout on the A4 page from:

    You can use this circuit as a lab power supply, motor speed controller, LED dimmer, etc
    Required Components for adjustable power supply:
    1. LM317 IC amzn.to/3hyP7Ba
    2. 1000uF DC Capacitors (2no)
    3. 10uF DC Capacitor (1no)
    4. 100nF Ceramic Capacitors (2no)
    5. 1N4007 Diodes (6no)
    6. 5 mm LED (1.5V)
    7. 220-ohm Resistor (1no)
    8. 1k Resistor (1no)
    9. 5k Potentiometer (1no)
    10. DC voltmeter (optional) amzn.to/3kogZJX
    11. Heatsink
    12. Connectors
    13. Zero PCB
    14. Stepdown Transformer. (12V-40V) 1.5Amp amzn.to/2Rywtig
    Current and Voltage Limit of this LM317 circuit: 0-40V and 0-1.5Amps.

    During the LM317 tutorial video, I have shown all the steps for making this DIY simple variable dc power supply.

    I have a question about how much current does this power supply give? I have been trying with 2 fans of 12v and 220mA each one, and it does not work with them. The current goes down over 120mA, and the circuit converts into a lm317 without the regulation resistors we the fans are connected.

    Sir, the 1000uF DC Capacitors are you using 35v or 50v?

      you can use any volt above 25V.

      1.5v is the maximum rating for the transistor .. the out would be also the 1.5v but remember to put a bigger heat sink

    Hii i did this circuit but im just getting a 12.6mA whats the problem this is what i used
    6 diodes like in the video
    Lm317t
    2x 1000uf 50v
    10uf 50v
    Ceramic capacitor 0.1uf
    100r resistor(i change it because the voltage im getting is too low like 8v)
    100k resistor
    Step down Transformer 12v 2A

      YES. but there is high chance of short circuit. And here I have used zero pcb which is easily available.

    A 1 Amp transformer won't give 1.5 Amp but maximum 700 mA. A this heatsink you used is very small to dissipate high heat when voltage difference is higher and load current upto 1 Amp

      As the max current rating of LM317 is 1.5 Amp, so I will not recommend 2 amp transformer.

      @@TechStudyCell Why? I think you are forgetting the current utilization factor. You don't get 1.5A from a transformer rated at 1.5A at the rated voltage after rectification. Besides that running any component at max isn't recommended. One can safely use a 3A transformer but using an under-rated transformer is a bad idea.
