    To me, I would not put a game on a list where I only play it online. To me the interaction with others is what I like most about board games.

      Would you play Root live but digitally? (Everyone brings a laptop)

    • @newtguy
      @newtguy 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s the way to do it, the games would be quicker too. Catan should be played that way too. Set up and take down and the dealing of cards etc all takes up a lot of time!

      There are some games I prefer online, it cuts down on the admin. But I like online games over video calls, so there's still social interaction.
      And laptops in the same room can work grand for games with a lot of admin.
      I haven't had the chance to play it, but I'd imagine online play would help with secret conversations in Diplomacy.

    You need to play blockade runner, 7 wonders architect, ceasar of alesia with the updated larger counters and updated maps, russia besieged, and fortress Europa both updated with larger counters.

    By 1978 we had exhausted Cosmic Encounters to the point
    where we were playing 3 hidden powers, randomly selected,
    replaced upon usage.
    If, today, you were to visit the home we played in, you could
    still hear echos of "TAKE AWAY HIS POWERS"

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. House rules work well in Cosmic. 1978! You were really an early adopter. Is it one of your top games too?

      I abandoned board games in favor of historical miniatures in 87.
      I've been playing, weekly, since then (the group has been playing weekly since 73).
      I do some annual board gaming. Not enough to have an opinion or a list.
      Histo-miniature-gaming is straight-jacketed by ... history.
      I teleported the group into the future with "X-Wing".
      This year I'm expanding that (Star Wars) universe to include Star Trek.
      Next month they'll be flying X Wings against a 3-foot long version of "The Doomsday Machine" from TOS.
      It only took me 6.5 hours to fabricate.
      I've pondered adapting Cosmic Encounters to fight in miniature.
      The rules don't allow for much adaptation.
      And I can't find a good model of a 'Vultch'.

    I only play Wingspan digitally. Only base game and European Expansion is available digitally, and games go quickly. The tournament scene is very strong.

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its digital version is really really good. I like that one in its cardboard form because my family will play it that way and I love that game in a personal face to face format.

    Does the Star Wars Rebellion game that is on Steam do justice to the physical board game, or not even close? For example, I thought the PC version of Wingspan ,Ticket to Ride and Food Chain Magnate are just as good as the tabletop versions!
    Regarding the video element of Root.. any thoughts on Nightmare Horror Adventures: Welcome to Crafton Mansion ? Nyctophobia?
    Regarding Kemet, Cosmic Encounter and Coup.. perhaps on your next best-of, you can stratify it based on difficulty (i.e. experienced players vs new to the hobby)... or 2 player (Feast of Odin) vs many player party (Cockroach Poker Royal ).. or genres: bluff (The Sting Game) vs co-op (The Crew) vs Euros / card collecting (solving puzzles to gain points), etc ?

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What a thorough comment. I'll try to answer everything! The Steam Star Wars Rebellion is from 1998 and is very different from the board game. The best part of the board game is the heads' up 1 v 1 element. Trying to outwit and an outmaneuvre your opponent is really fun. I agree that Wingspan is a direct implementation, and in some ways it's better than the cardboard. I haven't played the games that you mention with Root, so I can't offer much of value there. I absolutely love your idea of stratifying them. Coup is the intro level. Cosmic Encounter is the medium weight, and Kemet is the heaviest of the three. Thanks for taking time to engage with the video.

    • @LegendaryTactics

      I think it made my list so quickly because it has echoes of Cosmic Encounter in it. The way you need to work with other players to complete the objectives is what makes this one shine for me.

    Into the Warp, Scum Queen!
    A common cry during a game of Cosmic Encounters with my buddies (and s few gals) back in Atlanta.
    Our other Game of Choice was Diplomacy. Friends would drop everything and come running when we got a few guys together. Just as long as they didnt get Italy... Our games would go into 5 minutes a turn Blitz Mode at Midnight, so we could finish before our favorite bar closed at 2am

    The question is . . . if you play a digital game, are you playing a board game? I was discussing this with a friend of mine and I asked him if he was playing Pac-man the Board Game, would he count that as playing a video game.

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The main difference, I would counter, is that a digital platform can emulate just about every part of a board game other than the tactile experience, but a board game can't run a program and control bad guys, game flow, and visuals.

    • @Phalanx11
      @Phalanx11 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LegendaryTactics First of all, in Russia Beseiged (RB) you get to attack and defend. Which IMO the Eastern Front is the best Theater for board wargamers unlike other theaters of war ala' Normandy where Germans defend, Civil War South defends etc.
      In RB, the counters are 5/8" ( I hate 1/2" counters after playing the larger ones) and beautiful. The rules are clear and concise. The map could be a little more colorful but its aesthetically pleasing and functional. the Order of Battle has been painstakingly researched.
      Stand by for a FtoF replay of R.B. on my YewTewb channel Phalanxia.

      I'm in the middle of editing a solo game in multilayer mode - Mr President. It was a ton of fun to play that way. I like playing The Captain is Dead as a solo game, though it's technically multiplayer.

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny enough, I like games that allow for lying and backstabbing, but I don't like using those approaches. I try to play diplomacy as an honest gentleman, and I find that I do best at Coup when I don't lie.

    This sounds like this guy's top digital board games, the main thing about a board game is to get immersed in the atmosphere of the game with your friends/family live on the table, together. No need for displays and so on.

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The main reason I would include Root in its digital form is that the game is so incredible, but it would never get played by 95% of the gamers I play with because teaching each of the factions and the asymmetrical nature of the game mean that it would never get played. There are just too many other games that you can teach and play in a sitting. With the digital version, it's much more accessible with your options clearly set out for you and rules are enforced. I can still get very immersed with a group of people, even remotely and digitally. I do agree with you that one of the best parts of board gaming is the live interaction though.
