Just make the latch extend on past the pivot bolt of the latch 3 or 4 inches. That would keep your hands away from the heat going straight up above the fire opening. You could even drill holes in that extention going from large to small, with the largest hole out towards the end for decoration and to keep that long end from being too heavy.
Just to emphasise that a gas tank is still full of gas even when ‘empty’. Just lacks the pressure to be pushed out. You need to fettle all these cut edges as well. Good job though.

I see it would simple to add a rocket pipe to the side to burn off the smoke and use less wood. I’m confused as to WHY you removed the grab bar just to resend it back on???

Little mistake in making - opening hatch is in front of wood burning place so when we open hatch it will burn hands
