When you pause the game, the music plays on, but all you see is Alice, sitting near-catatonic on the bed, clutching a ratty rabbit toy with clear signs of self-harm. While we stroll through Wonderland, this is what is actually happening throughout the game. Just Alice, in a disgusting asylum room, staring out into nothing as she struggles to piece her mind back together.
I'm listening to this song and all I see is Alice with bleeding wrists and a blank stare, desperatly clinging on to her stuffed rabbit as if it's the only thing in the whole world that still offers a bit of comfort...
I really enjoyed Madness Returns but I never found it scary. Just mad and interesting. But playing this game, I can honestly say some parts have made me shiver. And this tune really captures who Alice is. It gives off a feel of loneliness and what it's like for someone to be, or to simply think they are psychologically unstable.
I agree. Madness returns I think it showed Alice has grown and matured. More stronger, she surpassed the pain experience in mcgeee. While American McGee’s version is showing younger Alice experiencing all the pain that she is starting to feel and have to do. It was too much for her.
Enemies, bosses, storytelling, soundtrack, originality, levels and atmosphere are the proofs that American McGee's Alice is better in everything than Alice: Madness Returns, except for graphics and gameplay. This last one does only have two bosses fights? Disappointing...
First saw this game at about 10 years old, when a friends brother was playing it. It scared the absolute crap out of me, simply because my 10 year old brain couldn't comprehend what it was looking at.
@@darlingxluxii7977 When people say that Alice madness returns isn't dark, or such... Well... it isn't. Until after you speak to the red queen. After that, when you exit the queenlands... It goes from 0-100 in terms of dark, fucked up and weird. The asylum area, then the dollhouse. It is fucked up to the extreme!

FYI American McGee is the designer & director of the sequel too, the first game isn't "his version", simply the first game in the series (he didn't even want his name on the box, only the publisher insisted).
Think of your most innocent childhood fantasies. But you experienced a horrible event and it traumatized you. Now your innocent childhood fantasies is warped and mutated into something twisted and vile.
I was 4 or 5 when I watched my Mother play this on her old computer. I liked watching her but I was too scared to play it on my own. Years later it became one of my favourite games of all time and still is! 😃 It’s a very special game to me and a part of my childhood, teen years and adult hood. 😊

One thing I really loved int the first game... music! It captured the sanity, the madness, the darkness and corruption of wonderland! Always these sad female vocals, perfect! Not a single theme in the second game came close to the perfection of the first game! Oh right Vorpal blade battle theme BUT that was Vrenna too :D
If this game is a "masterpiece" I'd like to see what a "bad" game is like. The music and environment are cool and all but the gameplay has aged like milk. I'm pretty sure 95% of people who think this is a masterpiece played it as kids and are just being nostalgic. It is not that great.
Her days of innocence are over. This music reflects the ten years she's spent trapped in her dark mind. Pain, terror, chaos and madness became her companions...
You have maybe have seen the "new" Alice in Wonderland movie that came out in 2010. Did you know that the movie was actually partially inspired by this game and it was also going to be like it. Sadly the makers of the movie changed their minds and made it more family friendly :( It sounds freaky but it's true.
Burton did no justice to the franchise; we need someone like Polanski to make a real American McGee's Alice in a film, that would be terrifying, and awesome...
Krwzprtt Wes Craven doesn't seem worthy of the try anyway, I hope someone takes the project back though, I still think Polanski would fit perfectly as director.
Burton's film was still directed at children; it's a Disney film. Fans of American Mcgee's Alice who watched that film hoping for something creepy went to completely the wrong place, as AMA is directed at ADULTS. It is completely unfair to draw comparisons between a film directed at children, and a game directed at adults.
It sad how Madness returns get so munch attention and McGee's is forgotten :( Like, this game is scarier and have a best storyline, songs and atmosphere beside the graphics and gameplay (English isn't my First language so don't kill meh)
No way...both games, the entire franchise is underrated. Did you know AMA attracted more attention and was better received in it's own day? AMR suffered from content cuts and reviews were harsher. The soundtrack of the two games is amazing.
@@chaos_doom1321 yeah I Know about the cuts, it's honestly Sad. I hope that asylum gives the Franchise more recognition and that McGee's do more awesome games, both games are really unique.
AMA, while still good, is hard to get used to, gameplay wise, if you've played AMR first. That, and the controls are pretty clunky in these days standards.
Listening to this song without playing still gives me the creeps. XD I haven't played this in awhile and still have the old game XD ROFL! My dad bought it for me years ago.
My family bought this game for some reason when I was in first grade. I used to play it all the time then, never made it far at all, but I was never that scared, just frustrated. Still remember all this music. I should play it, but GOD IT'S SCARY.
Alice 1 was so much better than the second one.. The story was really good in the second one, but it just really lacked that feeling of dread and fear that the first one had. I missed freaking out after turning the corner right into a card guard. MAKE ALICE 3!
Ah...I heard about this game when I was little. I ALWAYS wanted to play it. I have wanted it for years, and finally yesterday I got it! IT IS STILL GOOD :D
This could actually work as a movie, the way I imagine it... I heard this theme for the first time a long time ago... And I got chills just from the music. XD
@muchamariam1 when alice defeated the red queen and saved wonderland, wonderland was restored back to its formal self; and all the characters come back.
This is relly one of my fav theme tunes next to Ezios Theme from Assassins creed! Full of evil but fantasy and secrets!!!! It Fits the game perfectly :) and always puts me into a really good Halloween mood :)
@JapaneseAnimalover The game was released in 2001 using Quake 3 (or was just Quake?) programming. It was pretty advanced for the time despite being just a decade ago.
I'm 11 and I LOVE the first game, but I need help getting the 2nd one because my bro won't let me use his playstation to play the 2nd one if I get it, and I don't have a Xbox and my parents wont let me get a playstation or a Xbox. I really want the 2nd game, I don't know if it will run on my pc but the 1st one did, what should I do? Can someone respond???
For some reason that first part reminds me of the music in Scream 3..Lol. I mean that movie had to do with the mind and this novel and game deal with our mind above all else. I also think Medievil when I hear this sort of. Very gothic, very nice and haunting.
I just discovered this game because of yahoo saying there was gonna be a sequel in 2011. And searched for many videos of American McGee's Alice, and at 0:00 I already liked this theme lol

Austin Reed ugh...
Imagine if Medievil has a movie.
It would still be shit because it's a Tim Burton movie.
@@zlodrim9284 You're funny
Unfortunately he wasn't traumatized enough to come up with something like this or even a general franchise theme like this
"You selfish, misbegotten and unnatural child! You smelled the smoke, but you were in dreamland taking tea with your friends."

Yeah, about that: an adaptation was planned in 2001, but was cancelled. The guy who was going to direct it? Wes Craven.
