- Part 2 of the 1/35 Australian M3 Lee build. This is the full interior kit from Miniart. In this video I paint the tank in Light Stone 61 and SCC 2 brown. The interior is weathered using streaking grime and chipping techniques. To weather the exterior I apply sand and dust effects using oil paints, pigments, and enamel effects. Sat down and tackled “those” tracks. Actually come together very nicely and rather more easily than anticipated or dreaded. Just pre cut everything into 3 tubs, lower, upper and guide horn and with a new #11 blade & quick file, began. Did as link & length and was surprised/ pleased. Glad they’re done. Great finish! I has a similar issue with a stone color for a British vehicle. I started using Mission Model paints and they actually had a British Stone color. I decided to use it because my paint mixing leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks mate. I've never seen MM paints near me, but later in the summer I hope to be able to visit a shop that has AK Real Colors, so I'll snap some of those up.

A great job on the painting and weathering. I found chalk pastels to work well as I could mix the pastels to whatever color I needed, although you had to be careful as you could leave fingerprints.

I picked up tamiyas weathering pastel set cause they have sets with dust, sand, engine soot, etc. I'm going to try and use these sets for dust effects. And etc. The engine so it looks great. Nice work my guy. I got back in to this hobby after 30+ years away.

Sergio Solo did an interesting technique on his Akuyaku that I want to try. He used a couple layers of chipping fluid and LIGHT coats of paint in between each layer.
Thanks mate, I'll have to look that up. It sounds like I did something similar for 'painting distressing' recently (video not up yet), but now you've mentioned it, I can see how that could achieve a nice effect for sand and dust too. Thanks!
I went ahead and subscribed, as I do like the attention to detail you have for your work.
One thing to consider on your weathering... Sand (and dirt) get stuck to the boots of the crew. Think of where on the tank that the crew would step (including the inside), while servicing, or even just getting in to the vehicle. Although the sand in this instance would have fallen off of certain areas, the crew would leave a lot of marks.
While I have no complaints about your builds (they are very good!), might I suggest Andy's Hobby Headquarters TH-cam channel? He presents some interesting weathering techniques that I have learned quite a bit from. The results look kinda iffy during the process, but you cannot dispute the results.
Anyhow, thanks for fulfilling the need for my Tank Porn (My wife's term). I'll be prowling your channel to further fulfill my cravings.
Oh, say hey and by the way... Try out Tamiya's M2 Bradly IFV for an easy yet enjoyable build. It's TM 35132-3000. Quite a good build if you need to decompress from the new stuff.
Thanks Howard. Yes, weathering is something I struggle with in terms of the 'right amount'. As you say, often an effect looks bad or overdone while you're making it and this can cause the modeller to back off or even remove it. But things often tone down when dry and when varnishes etc are added. Good tip about the boot prints - thanks.

Watched the build video first then this one. Its all come together very well just the right amount of weathering it highlights all the detail perfectly. What tweezers are you using?
Thanks mate. The tweezers were just some I found in a art/craft store - I like them because of the curved ends.
Really beaut result....just right with the interior weathering. I find the same issue with dust on vehicle models....not sure how much to apply and what to use. I tend to use oils as you have in corners etc....you are correct in saying showing mud is much simpler and easier to attain a realistic look.

Stipple light oil colour over the whole tank, and heavy at the bottom behind the road wheel and on the side of the hull in that area.
Also, look at photos of IDF Israel Defense Force tanks.

Nice work! I really like the interior and all the dust effects! Keep it up can’t wait for the next video 👍maybe for the dust you could Vallejo pigments and get a wet brush. It will be very thick but if you smooth it out it will look like sand.

Nice build! It helped me decide to get the kit. :) And as now I have it in my hands I think you put on the wrong fenders and that's why sideskirts didn't fit.

Wonderful build but a bit disappointed because the kit has many fitting problems, nevertheless I'll still buy it.
I wouldn't say they were major problems though - more a case of just having to double-check things carefully. The biggest issue was with the front fender, but another commenter pointed out that I may have used the wrong version.

Just found your channel, that was a great watch, really informative without the usual waffle you get from other modellers. Subscribed after part 1. Love the model, and a great interior, just got back into modelling after 40 odd years, my first model is Airfix’s 1:24 scale Spitfire MkVb, and its a pig, I’m looking for my second model, any suggestions ?
Hi Ian, thanks for your comments. Sorry to hear about the Airfix Spitfire. If you're in to aircraft you can't go wrong with most Tamiya kits (I've just uploaded the Beaufighter video and I have a couple more in progress). To be honest, if you're into armour you can't go wrong with Tamiya either.
Thanks for that, think I’ll leave planes for a bit, looking at the Tamika panzer kamfwagon , it’s only a small kit, but think it will be a good starting point for armour. I need to get an air brush as well, in fact got a long list of stuff that I ‘need’ 😂😂Keep up the good work !
Nice work, but why did you paint the engine black? I`ve looked many times into the engine compartment of WW2 tanks, but I`ve never seen a black engine...
I don't remember now - I was probably following the instructions.
As mentioned in the comments,I.D.F. equipment is totally dust ridden,depending on the age and time of the unit. The difference between you and myself is I don't use gloss.I use flat and thinned Matt mixture and my spray unit to represent motion and wind. It's a toss up.

I forgot to mention ,I don't have the kind of model paints you use.I will be looking into those specialty paints I use Humbrol paints and artist acrylics and mad mixes. Good luck.

Yeah, the Miniart kits are expensive in a lot of countries. I'm lucky in that my local hobby store often has very good deals - I got this for just under 50 USD if I remember correctly.
For heavy dusting I use pastels and a fixative. Pumice, grout and fine dust/dirt can also be used. Fixative is important. I use a matte spray. Sometimes I leave just the natural look of the pure dust - untouched and raw.
